‘All The Light We Cannot See'' is a new Netflix series based on Anthony Doerr's Pulitzer prize winning Novel of the same name, set in the final days of WWII, as the paths of Marie-Laura a blind French girl and Werner a German soldier collide. Marie-Laura is played by Aria Mia Loberti in her first major screen role as a blind Actor with Louis Hofmann as Werner along with an all Starr cast too. The audio description for ‘All The Light We Cannot See' is voiced by Fern Lulham, a blind Broadcaster and Audio describer. On Monday 20 October 2023 Netflix and the RNIB hosted a preview screening of the first episode of ‘All The Light We Cannot See' with audio description to an invited audience of blind and partially sighted people at the Everyman Cinema, Broadgate, London and RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was there chatting with some of the invited guests to find out how they found seeing the first episode of “All The Light We Cannot See' on the big screen with audio description. Toby chatted with Molly Watt, who has both hearing and sight loss and this was her first experience of audio description on the big screen, former RNIB Connect Radio presenter of ‘Read On' Red Szell who reviewed the novel when it came out and Jonathan Abro a Accessibility IT Specialist, RNIB Volunteer and also a Trustee of the audio description charity VocalEyes. Steven Scott is joined, as ever, by Robin Christopherson, as well as RNIB's Paul Porter, and Read On's Red Szell, to talk about a brand new skill available on Lady A! Yes, that's right - RNIB Talking Books are now available through Alexa-enabled devices, such as Amazon smart speakers using an Alexa skill. Talking Books service was first launched in 1935 and is now home to more than 30,000 audiobooks, which today are sent out to customers in CD or USB format or as digital downloads... and now on your Lady A device! Once you start accessing Talking Books through an Alexa skill, you'll be able to get reading straight away as your books will be with you instantly. As you'll be able to open any of the books on our Online Library through simple voice commands, you can make immediate changes to your reading lists when you want to, without having to wait. How do you get started with it then? Well, the library can now be accessed by asking “Alexa, open RNIB Talking Books”. Bear in mind you'll need to be a registered RNIB Library member and have access to an Amazon account. You'll also need to have the Alexa app downloaded to your phone or tablet or have an Alexa-enabled device, such as a smart speaker.
