In this episode of Cult Film School, Adrian and Dion overstay their welcome in Fairvale to soak in the ambience of the three Psycho sequels: Richard Franklin's Psycho II (1983), Anthony Perkin's Psycho III (1986), & Mick Garris's Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990). “you have erred, perhaps” [COPP] We have John H. Watson, M.D. to thank for the Sherlock Holmes stories, and we typically take them at face value. That is, we trust that Watson was telling us the truth. While Sherlock Holmes complimented Watson for his choice of cases, he also had criticisms of Watson's writing, taking issue with his storytelling process. Does this mean Watson's accuracy might also be called into question? It's just a Trifle. Do you have a topic you'd like to recommend? BoJack Horseman's, Aparna Nancherla joins Joshua to talk about her favorite formative books "A House on Mango Street" and "The Phantom Tollbooth". The comedian, author, and actor delves into the struggles she faced with Imposter Syndrome while writing her memoir "Unreliable Narrator" about the very trials of that very Imposter Syndrome. She and Joshua explore how the end result to a story about yourself is not an end at all, and how an honest conclusion can be an open one. They share their mutual love of libraries and the prolific comedian pulls out a wide array of contemporary fiction and nonfiction from the tote bag she was given at the Miami Beach Book Fair, an unlikely festival for such a beach forward city. Join hosts J.D. Barker, Christine Daigle, Kevin Tumlinson, and Dick Wybrow as they discuss the week's entertainment news, including the Romance Writers of America filing for bankruptcy, Polis Books, and how Costco plans to stop selling books year round. Then, stick around for a chat with Carol LaHines! Carol LaHines: For me, the most affecting stories are those that are leavened with a sardonic sensibility. Italo Calvino, one of my favorite writers, notes “th[e] particular connection between melancholy and humor,” speaking of how great writing “foregrounds [with] tiny, luminous traces that counterpoint the dark catastrophe.” I've always veered toward the great literary comic writers—from Cervantes to Laurence Sterne to Pynchon, with a particular reverence for Nabokov, who believed that the best writing places the reader under a spell. My debut novel, Someday Everything Will All Make Sense, was a finalist for the Nilsen Prize for a First Novel and an American Fiction Award. My second novel, The Vixen Amber Halloway, is forthcoming in 2024 (Regal House). My fiction has appeared in journals including Fence, Denver Quarterly, Hayden's Ferry Review, Cimarron Review, The Literary Review, The Laurel Review, South Dakota Review, North Dakota Quarterly, The South Carolina Review, The Chattahoochee Review, The Nebraska Review, North Atlantic Review, Sycamore Review, Permafrost, redivider, Literary Orphans, and Literal Latte. My story, “Papijack,” was selected by judge Patrick Ryan as the recipient of the Lamar York Prize for Fiction. My short stories and novellas have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and been finalists for the David Meyerson Fiction Prize, the Mary McCarthy Prize, the New Letters short story award, and the Disquiet Literary Prize, among others. My nonfiction includes “New York est une ville a part,” appearing in chantier d'ecriture (Mémoire d'encrier, A. Heminway, ed.). I am a graduate of New York University, Gallatin Division, and of St. John's University School of Law. Now this is the epitome of a left-brained story. THE LAST OF SHEILA has puzzles within puzzles, an intricate plot that has been expertly set up, and a cast of characters who aren't who they seem to me. There are so many amazing things about it, I hardly know which of them to highlight for you here so I'll give you a bit of trivia: this movie was Rian Johnson's inspiration for THE GLASS ONION. Oh, and if you solved the mystery before the murderer was revealed, tag me on IG/Threads and let me know. I didn't get anywhere close to solving it.-V"If you can work a secret that is juicy and high stakes into your story, you're well on your way to creating really great narrative drive." - Valerie FrancisRELATED STORY NERD EPISODESGosford Park (Season 9, Episode 8)See How They Run (Season 9, Episode 5)Knives Out (Season 1, Episode 7) REGISTER FOR THE 2024 SPRING WEBINAR SERIESFor access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

As if breaking down Grant's (mostly) cognitive distortions wasn't enough in this episode, Jay hits him with a fact about a high percentage of people don't have an inner monologue. This almost breaks Grant mentally. The comedic downward spiral and the wishful thinking that comes from the idea of not having to suffer from listening to his evil unreliable narrator is a rollercoaster of emotions, to say the least. You may recall that in the first official episode of the season, we quickly discussed the 15 cognitive distortions and broke down the first 5 of them and how they related to us... well in this episode we break down the next 5 and how they relate to us. Mostly Grant. Jay doesn't get out of this unscathed though. Grant doesn't seem to think that Jay is discriptive enough when it comes to sharing his emotions and he also admits that he's not happy, nor does he understand Jay's level of depression. Has Jay ever laid in a fetal position and cried when feeling depressed or is it just more of a Meh! feeling? Comedian Aparna Nancherla (@aparnapkin) joins Matt, Jesse and Andy to talk about her new book Unreliable Narrator, the ubiquity of impostor syndrome in Hollywood, childhood memories of carob, a new insanely hot pepper, roosters recognizing themselves in mirrors, a drunk dude fighting his reflection, and AI besting humans at Street Fighter.
Comedian and writer Aparna Nancherla discusses her memoir Unreliable Narrator and why her mother made her order pizza to combat her shyness; stand-up comedian Gary Gulman riffs on the false notion of dangerous scissors in elementary school; singer-songwriter and historian No-No Boy performs his song "1603," featured on his latest album Empire Electric, which tells the story of the first non-Native sighting of Oregon by a multicultural crew of sailors who fell through the cracks of history. Plus, host Luke Burbank and announcer Elena Passarello learn about the times our listeners suffered from impostor syndrome.
It's Caissie's 25th wedding anniversary and while she's not doing the best job of celebrating it, Busy IS celebrating the one year anniversary of the day she fell down her stairs and almost died. The downward spiral she's been experiencing since has her wondering if she fell through some kind of portal that she's just now coming out of. In fact, she's calling for the new year to start immediately. Then, comedian, actor and author, Aparna Nancherla, pops by to talk about her new book “Unreliable Narrator” and without even knowing portals had already been discussed, also talks about her brush with a portal to another dimension. Aparna Nancherla's new book, Unreliable Narrator: Me, Myself, and Impostor Syndrome, covers a lot of mental health territory, much of which she talks about in this interview. Despite being an accomplished comedian and actor, thus having no reason to suffer from impostor syndrome, she still does, because that particular phenomena is impervious to logic. Nor does her success keep away perfectionism, dysthymic depression, or anxiety. In her book and in conversation, Aparna doesn't go for the easy laugh, instead finding a deeper sort of humor brought about by insight into what it's like to live with mental health conditions on an ongoing basis. She also talks about her decision to step away from standup comedy for several years and why she has returned.Unreliable Narratordrops tomorrow, September 19th, 2023! Impostor syndrome is one of many therapy-speak words that have gone mainstream in the past few years — but what is it, really? Aparna Nancherla knows all about it. Aparna is a comedian and the author of Unreliable Narrator: Me, Myself, and Impostor Syndrome. Despite her success as a performer, she isn't immune to self-doubt. In this episode, she talks about the ways she's learned to deal with impostor syndrome: like creating a resume listing all her failures, or making up words at parties to gauge other people's reactions. She also shares how she learned to put less stock in success and what to do when your mind isn't telling you the truth. For the full text transcript, visit go.ted.com/BHTranscripts

A head's up that we are changing the show format by splitting Books on Botox and the Hot Writing Tips into separate episodes. This lets us spend more time on both without ending up with a show that is just too freaking long. We hope it works for you and please share your feedback with us because that helps a lot. Today we are talking about unreliable narrators. Definition: A narrator is “unreliable” when we have reasons to doubt the versions of events he or she is presenting to us as factual in a story. For whatever reason, the narrator isn't disclosing isn't telling us the whole truth or is purposely hiding important parts of the story.Listen in to hear how to use the unreliable to tell a page turning story!
