Romans Vol. 1 - Coming Under Grace Romans 3:24–26 shows that the gift of salvation is not a single benefit but a rich work of God that includes justification, redemption, and propitiation, all accomplished through the death of Christ. Through Jesus' sacrifice, God both satisfies His righteous justice and freely declares sinners righteous by grace through faith. This message takes us on a profound journey through the story of Abraham, revealing a timeless truth that transforms how we understand our relationship with God. We discover that righteousness—being right with God—isn't something we earn through our efforts, our heritage, or our religious performance. Instead, it comes through faith alone. Abraham's story is remarkable: God promised him descendants as numerous as the stars when he was childless at 75, and his wife was well past childbearing years. Yet Abraham believed God, and that faith was credited to him as righteousness. This wasn't just recorded for Abraham's sake, but for ours. We're challenged to examine where we place our trust.

The sermon, rooted in Romans 9:30–10:13, explores the paradox of Gentiles attaining righteousness by faith while Israel, despite their diligent pursuit of the law, failed to obtain it. It emphasizes that God's sovereignty in election and human responsibility are not contradictory but harmonious, as salvation comes through faith in Christ, not human effort. The Gentiles, though not seeking righteousness, received it by hearing the gospel and believing, while Israel's self-reliance on the law—rooted in pride and ignorance—led them to stumble over Christ, the cornerstone.
Romans 10:5-8 — How far away is the truth? What quest or journey must be traversed in order to find God? Is there some kind of special act one must perform in order to make their way to God? Many people teach that God is so far away that the gap is unspeakably difficult to cross. Others teach that one must cross the gap to God by their own efforts. Whether it is Roman Catholicism, the mystical way, or Protestant intellectualism, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones finds the answer to such false systems in the apostle Paul's words in Romans 10:5–8. The apostle invokes the great preacher of the law – Moses – in order to show that God has revealed Himself perfectly clearly. There is no need to ascend to heaven or descend into the deep. God, through Christ, has revealed Himself fully in the gospel and the gospel way is not about human efforts. It is not about their assent or justification by works. Salvation is about justification by faith alone in Christ Jesus alone. In this sermon on Romans 10:5–8 titled “Righteousness by Faith,” listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones applies Paul's gospel message to contemporary ears and encourages with the grace-filled message of our savior. Send us a textThe word that changes everything isn't go—it's come. We open Genesis 7:1 and step into Noah's world of long silence, steady hammer blows, and an outrageous promise that demanded decades of obedience before a single drop fell. As the animals gather and the sky darkens with a first taste of lightning, we follow the thread of how faith becomes action, how action becomes righteousness credited by God, and how an invitation reshapes a family's future. We wrestle honestly with a question many of us carry: where does my choice meet God's choice? Scripture speaks with both voices—election and responsibility—and we hold those parallel truths without flinching. Along the way we trace the pattern of household salvation through Cornelius, Lydia, and the Philippian jailer, unpacking the weight and privilege of spiritual leadership at home. Influence matters, but compulsion has no place; each person must decide to walk through the open door. Noah's sons didn't inherit faith by proximity—they demonstrated it by stepping into the ark.If you're facing a long season of quiet, this conversation offers a way to live: build before the storm, trust when the sky is clear, and be ready to move when God's invitation arrives. We share practical ways to lead your home with Scripture, prayer, repentance, and courage, while urging a posture of humility in mysteries we cannot solve. More than anything, we end with gratitude—grace that finds us, calls us, and keeps us when our understanding runs thin. If this encouraged you, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs hope, and leave a review so others can find these conversations too.Support the showhttps://www.jacksonfamilyministry.comhttps://bobslone.com/home/podcast-production/

In this episode Justin dives into the role of the law in the life of a believer, emphasizing that while born-again Christians are no longer under the law but under grace, the law remains relevant for the unrighteous. Drawing from 1 Timothy 1:8-10, he explains that the law is designed for the lawless, sinners, and those contrary to sound doctrine, serving as a tool to bring conviction and humility by exposing sin and the need for a savior. Justin highlights the law’s purpose in breaking prideful hearts, leading to repentance and the recognition of Jesus’ substitutionary work, which imputes righteousness through faith, not law-keeping. He warns against misusing the law or shielding sinners from its condemning power, as it’s essential for guiding people to the cross, where true transformation and new life in Christ begin.
Scripture References: Philippians 3:1-11; Acts 9:15-16; 1 Peter 3:18; John 17:3; Ephesians 2:13; Revelation 21:1-3Intro:Context: Philippians 3, Paul writing from prison.Focus on Paul's radical transformation: From Saul, the zealous persecutor who jailed/oversaw the killing of Christians, to Paul, the apostle jailed for Christ. What could cause such a complete reversal? (Think: converting core beliefs/loyalties). Paul had a direct encounter with the risen Christ (Acts 9). His conversion wasn't just religious affiliation; it was a fundamental shift.Key Points:Conversion 1: From the Ladder of Legalism to the Cross of Christ (Phil 3:4-9)Paul lists his "blue-chip" credentials (circumcised, Israelite, Benjamin, Hebrew, Pharisee, zealous persecutor, legally righteous). He had maximum "confidence in the flesh."He counts all this previous "gain" as "loss" and "rubbish" compared to the value of knowing Christ.Contrast: The "Ladder" mentality (perform well = acceptance; fail = rejection - exemplified by the coach clip/ "American way") vs. The "Cross" reality (righteousness comes not from our works/law, but through faith in Christ's work for us). This Gospel truth needs constant repetition ("It's safe for you," v. 1) because we naturally revert to the ladder.Conversion 2: From Life FOR/FROM God to Life WITH God (Phil 3:8, 10-11)Paul's driving desire wasn't just duty for God or benefits from God, but intimacy with God: "that I may know him," "gain Christ," "be found in him."What the Gospel achieves (forgiveness, eternal life) are vital, but they are means to the ultimate end: knowing and being with God Himself.Forgiveness isn't just wiping a slate; it cleanses to bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18). Eternal life is knowing God (John 17:3).Analogy: Seeking spousal forgiveness – the true goal is restoring connection/relationship, not just easing guilt or getting perks. The ultimate question shifts from "Who wants benefits?" to "Who wants God?"God's Desire: Life WITH YouGod's primary goal isn't just making us morally better, but bringing us relationally closer (Eph 2:13). He desires communion.Consider God's attractiveness: Humble (Incarnation), Serving, Loving (sacrificially), Redemptive (meaning in suffering), Powerful (Resurrection).Does God want me, even knowing my failures? The Cross is the definitive YES. He takes us "as is," confident in His power to heal and restore. He sees, knows, loves, moves towards you.All history points toward God dwelling with His people (Rev 21:3).Conclusion:These conversions—rejecting legalism for grace, shifting from performance/benefits to relationship—aren't one-time decisions but ongoing processes. We continually need to recognize the "ladder" in our hearts and choose the Cross, choose life with Him.Call to Action:Acknowledge the need for these conversions again today.Consciously choose the Cross over the ladder.Seek life with God, not just for Him or from Him. Recognize His desire for you.Remain in His love (Jude 21) – that relational space is where you truly belong, wherever you go. Support the show*Summaries and transcripts are generated using AI. Is this really fair? "That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone." This is how God chose how people would be saved, "By the sanctifying work of the Spirit and belief in the truth"
