It's kind of wild how much of life can be outsourced. You can hire someone to mow your lawn, fix your car, clean your house, even run your business. But there's one thing you can't outsource: your relationships. And that includes your relationship with Jesus.

Did you know that the neural pathways for relationship are developed in the first three years of a person's life? This is the heart of what's called attachment theory and affects our relationship with ourselves, others, and even our relationships with God. I'm so honored to welcome today's guest, Summer Joy Gross. Summer is a spiritual director, Anglican priest, and writer who weaves neuroscience, attachment theory, and spiritual practices to help us root ourselves in God's presence and nearness. In this conversation, Summer walks us through each of the 4 attachment styles, showing us how our earliest experiences of love shape the way that we've come to experience God. We talk about the attachment wounds of each style, and how the Spirit actively pursues our healing in these places. Summer also guides us through a beautiful attachment practice in real-time to help to reconnect to God in a more secure way. The music used in this podcast is titled Soaking in His Presence by William Augusto. Jesus' Death and Resurrection Tore the Veil that Stood Between You and a Personal Relationship with God MESSAGE SUMMARY: With the “Veil torn”, Jesus wants your life-focus to be on following Him -- your life should be about impressing Him and not others. Jesus assumes that Jesus Followers will practice the piety of giving, praying, and fasting; therefore, they will do things in the right way and with the right motives. To this end in Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus instructed the Apostles in fasting: “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.". Therefore, your worship and prayers should be about growing and deepening your personal relationship with God and not in consideration of others and their impressions of you. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I come this day inviting you to cut those deeply entrenched chains that keep me from being faithful to my true self in Christ. In doing so, may my life be a blessing to many. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 44). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Hatred. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Love. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). A Personal Relationship With GodPsalm 91:4 “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”I love this image. I picture the Lord as a giant eagle and He puts his wing over us like we would put our arm around a child. When I think of this I am filled up with a sense of love that I just can't explain. Sometimes I think we think of the Lord as this all mighty being that is so magnificent and is so busy that He doesn't really have time for us. I guess I don't really mean that he doesn't have time for us. I think that we all know that He is listening to our prayers. I think we know that He spends lots of time on us. I guess what I mean is that we don't really think that He knows us personally, if that makes sense. I don't know, maybe I am wrong. Take a minute and think about your impression of God. What comes to mind when you try to picture Him. Do you think of a loving father, do you think of an almighty God that is kind of intimidating, do you think of someone that answers your prayers, but does not know you personally? How do you picture God? I think the reason I am asking this is because I think that many of us think of God as someone that is unapproachable. Yes, we can pray to Him and He will answer our prayers, but that is the extent of the relationship. I wonder how many of us know that God longs to have a personal relationship with each and every one of us. Yes, even you. God wants to have a personal relationship with you. When I first heard this, I thought, what does that even mean? How does one have a personal relationship with someone that they can't see, hear, touch, talk to, etc. This is when I began my journey to have a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father. (Actually with all three members of the Trinity) So, how does one begin something when they have no idea how to do it? Lots of ways I guess. What I did was try to learn what it means to have a personal relationship with God. I read some books and talked to lots of people. Here is what I have learned so far. Although I am still very much in the learning phase.First, you can talk to Him. You can talk to God anytime you want to. He is always willing to listen. You can talk to Him about anything. Sometimes I think we feel as though God is busy and so we come to Him when we really need Him, but we don't want to bother Him with our day to day stuff. Or at least that's how I felt. God has time for you whenever you want. He is not bound by the same limits we are when it comest to time or attention. He can be there for each of us all of the time. He is not only willing to listen, but He wants to listen. He loves to hear about your day. If you are a parent, think about how happy you are when your children, no matter what age they are, take the time to tell you about their day. This is how God feels when you take the time to just sit and talk with Him about whatever is on your mind. Second, get to know who God is. If you are trying to develop a personal relationship with someone one you would learn as much about that person as you can. The same is true with God. The best way you can learn more about God is to read the Bible. Reading scripture and spending time in God's word is a great way to feel closer to Him. The more you read about and learn about our Heavenly Father, the more you will begin to see Him in a different light. You will begin to see how much He truly loves His people. How much He has done and continues to do for us, even when we don't deserve it. Reading scripture will help you to get to see several different sides of God. You will get to learn so many different things about Him. Yes, God is all mighty and He is also very compassionate. Trust me, if you want to feel closer to the Lord, spend time daily in scripture. Another way you can develop a personal relationship with God is to listen to what He has to say. Once you start to talk with God and tell Him all about your day, then you can also spend some quiet time just listening to what He has to say. You will most likely not get an audible voice that you can hear, however, some people have had this extraordinary gift. What I hear about most often is that you get a sense or a thought that comes to mind. For instance you are sitting there quietly and you tell God that you are available and listening. Then sometimes you will get a thought in your head from God. A sentence, a statement, some people get visions. It could be whatever you are open to. God is not going to force this on you. He will talk with you if you want to listen but only when you are open to it. I have had words of prophecy come to me in this way occasionally. How I usually listen to God is that I write Him a letter in my journal and then I tell Him that am listening and then I write down any thought that comes to my mind. I do not sensor it, I do not ask myself if this is really God talking, I just trust that I have told Him I am listening and so He is talking. That being said, I understand that I am new to listening to God and also that I may have heard something wrong or added something I wanted to hear. So, I do not take everything I write down as gospel, but I have found it is a great way for me to take time to listen to the Lord. I learned this letter writing technique from Fern Gorin at the Life Purpose Institute. Those are just a few ways you can develop a personal relationship with God. I had no idea I was going to talk about that today. I thought for sure it was going to be about how God is our shield and our refuge. The Holy Spirit is funny like that. We think we have a plan but He knows best and so He just takes over. I love it when that happens. I think it is important that we develop a personal relationship with God so that we can truly understand how much He loves us. Also, so that we can truly understand how much he knows us personally. We are not just another person to Him. We don't get lost in the shuffle. He calls each of us by name. I will leave you with a word of prophecy from my prayer group that shows you just how much God wants to have a personal relationship with you. “I have called you by name into life. I have called you every day by your name because I know you, I love you, because you are my friend.”Dear Heavenly Father, I ask that you bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we ask that you help us develop a personal relationship with you. We pray that you help us to understand how much you love us and how much you know each one of us personally. We thank you so much, Lord, for that personal attention. We thank you for all the countless times you have listened to us, and we pray that we can teach us how to quiet our minds and listen to you. We love you, Lord, and we long to have a personal relationship with you. We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen. Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to Walk Boldly With Jesus. I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow. Remember, Jesus loves you just as you are, and so do I. Pastor Derek explains how a number of theological paradoxes can be resolved, in particular, the difference between relationship (positional truth) and fellowship (temporal truth) scriptures. Understanding these 2 distinct realms allows us to receive both scriptures fully, and apply them correctly, especially in the area of forgiveness.
In this episode, we look at different ways we might want God to see us as we live in relationship with God!
Today's Uncertainties Call for a Deepening Personal Relationship with God Through Prayer, Fasting, and Listening MESSAGE SUMMARY: There are times when you need clarity, understanding, knowledge, and insights from the Lord about the specific issues that you are facing. The Lord will speak to you, but sometimes it takes your listening and fasting to hear Him. For example, when Joel received a Word when the land was to be destroyed, he called a fast (i.e. Joel 1:14): “Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.”. Some things you are facing in your life must be dealt with by both prayer and fasting. Fasting releases a spiritual power – in your weakness, God is made strong in your life. Daniel's prayer, from Daniel 9:3-5, provides a context for asking direction from God: “Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the LORD my God and made confession, saying, ‘O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules.'". After Jesus responded to the Apostles request of “teach us to pray” by providing the “Lord's Prayer”, Jesus instructed the Apostles and us, in Matthew 6:17-18, how to fast: “But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.". Our fasting will be rewarded as a deepening link to God in our personal relationship with Him. TODAY'S PRAYER: Father, I confess that when difficulties and trials come into my life, large or small, I mostly grumble and complain. I realize the trials James talks about are not necessarily “walls,” but they are difficult to bear, nonetheless. Fill me with such a vision of a transformed life, O God, that I might actually consider it “pure joy” when you bring trials my way. I believe, Lord. Help my unbelief. In Jesus' name, amen. In "Prayer: A Relationship With God," Pastor Paul Klouse shares that prayer is a relationship with God marked by three things: conversation, realness, and closeness. God speaks to us through nature, Scripture, and especially through Jesus, and He also listens when we speak to Him. We don't have to have it all together when we pray. We can come honestly, with our joys, pain, and questions. Jesus is near, knocking at the door of our hearts, waiting for us to invite Him in and experience prayer as a gift rather than an obligation. Jesus Followers Are the Enemy's {devil's} Target to Mess You Up and To Destroy Your Relationship with God MESSAGE SUMMARY: The enemy {the evil one, the devil} is always at work seeking to destroy the fruit of the Lord's field and your life. In John10:10, Jesus tells us: “The thief {enemy} comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”. In 1 Peter 5:8, Peter tells you more about your enemy who is always with you: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil {enemy} prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”. Continue to remember that the enemy is always attempting to mess you up and to destroy your witness. Also, the enemy is always attempting to destroy your relationship with God and to get you to reject God. The enemy does his evil in subtle ways, but his purpose is clear -- the enemy wants you off the right path. The enemy is always at work, and he never sleeps. Episode 60: Finding Joy and Purpose Through Obedience with Krystal Hunsucker About Our Guest Krystal Hunsucker is a vibrant woman of faith who brings energy and authenticity to everything she does. Here's a little more about her: Boy mom to two sons (ages 5 and 9) Mary Kay Sales Director since 2002 (working her business for 25 years) Professional emcee and public speaker Passionate about worship music and singing Lives in McKinney, Texas with her husband Brad and their two sons Krystal grew up in Abilene, Texas before finishing high school and college in Oklahoma (she's a proud Sooner!). She loves makeup, fashion, sparkles, and her signature "color" is literally color – she embraces brightness in all aspects of life! Episode Highlights: Rhythms That Restore In this special one-year anniversary episode, Krystal shares how she's discovered rhythms that restore her mind, heart, body, and spirit through various seasons of life. Her story beautifully illustrates how finding peace and joy through obedience to God creates sustainable rhythms of rest and renewal. Finding Her Purpose Early At just 21-22 years old, Krystal read "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren, which helped her identify her life's purpose: "to lead and inspire and encourage women." This purpose has guided her life's direction, and she's seen how God has consistently placed her in positions to fulfill this calling. Daily Rhythms That Restore Krystal maintains her spiritual growth and finds daily restoration through: Following The Bible Recap (she's in her third year using it) Leading Bible study Weekly church attendance Worship music that realigns her heart Teaching her boys by example Finding quiet time in her car (her "peace filling spot") Viewing each day as an opportunity for "daily bread" rather than trying to plan too far ahead Her Faith Journey While Krystal grew up in church, she experienced a powerful "wrangling" moment during her junior year of college. She had drifted from her spiritual foundation and was in an unhealthy relationship when her boyfriend unexpectedly suggested attending a Shane & Shane concert. There, she had a profound Holy Spirit encounter that left her in tears throughout the concert. A week later, she ended the relationship, and "everything changed" in her life. Lessons in Obedience and Surrender Krystal shared powerful examples of how obedience to God has blessed her life: Dating journey: She remained patient and selective for over 10 years, writing out Proverbs 31 with her name in it, creating a detailed list of qualities she sought in a partner, and going on many first dates while being obedient to not "waste time with the wrong person" She met her husband Brad on a blind date at age 33 and married at 34 Parenting her youngest son: She described the indescribable blessings that came through fully surrendering and obeying God's guidance God's Movement in Her Life Krystal and Brad have been married for almost 11 years and have two sons. She shared a beautiful perspective: "I am truly and honestly feel like I am living my dream," though she sometimes has to remind herself to fully embrace and enjoy this season of life that she worked so hard for. Advice to Her Younger Self Although she was blessed with great parents and natural confidence as a child, Krystal would remind her younger self to keep seeking God during seasons of doubt, remembering that "obedience creates peace, even when it's not easy." Krystal's Challenge to Listeners "Daily seek Him. I don't know what that looks like for each person but figure out what moves you. On the days you don't feel moved or on the busy days when the day slips by and it's been one or two days since you've dug into the Word, get back to what you know to do. Whether it's worship music, prayer writing, listening to the Bible, reading the Bible, a podcast, or a sermon - there are so many options. Whatever fills your soul with Him, do it and then do it again until on the days you don't, you wake up the following day hungry and ready to return." This week's message reminds us: Jesus didn't just come for the crowd—He came for you. Whether you feel distant, stuck, or spiritually wandering, you're not beyond His reach. From lost sheep to prodigal sons, Jesus seeks what others overlook. And when He finds us? Heaven throws a party. Key Verse: “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” —Luke 19:10
Scripture References: Philippians 3:1-11; Acts 9:15-16; 1 Peter 3:18; John 17:3; Ephesians 2:13; Revelation 21:1-3Intro:Context: Philippians 3, Paul writing from prison.Focus on Paul's radical transformation: From Saul, the zealous persecutor who jailed/oversaw the killing of Christians, to Paul, the apostle jailed for Christ. What could cause such a complete reversal? (Think: converting core beliefs/loyalties). Paul had a direct encounter with the risen Christ (Acts 9). His conversion wasn't just religious affiliation; it was a fundamental shift.Key Points:Conversion 1: From the Ladder of Legalism to the Cross of Christ (Phil 3:4-9)Paul lists his "blue-chip" credentials (circumcised, Israelite, Benjamin, Hebrew, Pharisee, zealous persecutor, legally righteous). He had maximum "confidence in the flesh."He counts all this previous "gain" as "loss" and "rubbish" compared to the value of knowing Christ.Contrast: The "Ladder" mentality (perform well = acceptance; fail = rejection - exemplified by the coach clip/ "American way") vs. The "Cross" reality (righteousness comes not from our works/law, but through faith in Christ's work for us). This Gospel truth needs constant repetition ("It's safe for you," v. 1) because we naturally revert to the ladder.Conversion 2: From Life FOR/FROM God to Life WITH God (Phil 3:8, 10-11)Paul's driving desire wasn't just duty for God or benefits from God, but intimacy with God: "that I may know him," "gain Christ," "be found in him."What the Gospel achieves (forgiveness, eternal life) are vital, but they are means to the ultimate end: knowing and being with God Himself.Forgiveness isn't just wiping a slate; it cleanses to bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18). Eternal life is knowing God (John 17:3).Analogy: Seeking spousal forgiveness – the true goal is restoring connection/relationship, not just easing guilt or getting perks. The ultimate question shifts from "Who wants benefits?" to "Who wants God?"God's Desire: Life WITH YouGod's primary goal isn't just making us morally better, but bringing us relationally closer (Eph 2:13). He desires communion.Consider God's attractiveness: Humble (Incarnation), Serving, Loving (sacrificially), Redemptive (meaning in suffering), Powerful (Resurrection).Does God want me, even knowing my failures? The Cross is the definitive YES. He takes us "as is," confident in His power to heal and restore. He sees, knows, loves, moves towards you.All history points toward God dwelling with His people (Rev 21:3).Conclusion:These conversions—rejecting legalism for grace, shifting from performance/benefits to relationship—aren't one-time decisions but ongoing processes. We continually need to recognize the "ladder" in our hearts and choose the Cross, choose life with Him.Call to Action:Acknowledge the need for these conversions again today.Consciously choose the Cross over the ladder.Seek life with God, not just for Him or from Him. Recognize His desire for you.Remain in His love (Jude 21) – that relational space is where you truly belong, wherever you go. Support the show*Summaries and transcripts are generated using AI. In this enlightening episode of "Father and Joe," Joe Rockey and Father Boniface Hicks engage in a profound discussion about the dynamics of the apostles' relationships with Jesus, exploring how these interactions reflect our contemporary relationships with God. The episode begins with an examination of the apostles' journey with Jesus, acknowledging their fluctuating faith and fear, especially during significant moments like the calming of the storm and the events leading up to Good Friday.Joe and Father delve into the innate human tendency to call upon divine intervention only during times of distress, neglecting to recognize and invite God's presence throughout the mundane and joyous aspects of our lives. They challenge listeners to consider how their own relationship with God is similarly compartmentalized, perhaps reduced to moments of desperation or prosperity, rather than an ongoing, integrated communion.Father Boniface emphasizes the importance of fostering a relationship with God that transcends circumstantial need. By drawing parallels between modern practices and the apostles' misconceptions, he highlights how embracing holistic spirituality requires acknowledging God in every facet of daily life—from tasks as simple as schooling and business to profound life decisions and moments of crisis. The episode lays bare the pitfalls of relegating spirituality to a mere contingency measure and proposes a transformative approach through kindness and curiosity. These tools enable individuals to explore their spiritual lives more fully, understanding the habitual barriers that limit divine interaction. Joe and Father stress the importance of cultivating a spiritual discipline where Jesus is omnipresent—integrated seamlessly into every decision, action, and relationship.Listeners are invited to use the forthcoming Easter celebrations as a catalyst for this change, fostering a spiritual habit that welcomes God's grace into every moment. By reflecting on the kindness and curiosity method, one can start to dismantle the subconscious walls that hinder spiritual growth, paving the way for a more profound connection with God.Tags:faith journey, relationship with God, apostles, spiritual growth, Jesus Christ, Easter reflection, divine presence, spirituality, kindness and curiosity, overcoming fear, holistic spirituality, modern faith, religion, integrating God, personal growth, apostles' faith, divine intervention, spiritual discipline, trusting God, cultivating faith, God in daily life, transformative spirituality, finding God, spiritual habits, opening to God, divine connection, spiritual transformation, fear and faith, transcending need, divine communion, spiritual celebration, faith reinforcement, God in moments, embracing spirituality, inner spirituality, relationship dynamics, faith obstacles, spiritual awareness, Easter journeyHashtags:#FaithJourney, #RelationshipWithGod, #Apostles, #SpiritualGrowth, #JesusChrist, #EasterReflection, #DivinePresence, #Spirituality, #KindnessAndCuriosity, #OvercomingFear, #HolisticSpirituality, #ModernFaith, #IntegratingGod, #PersonalGrowth, #ApostlesFaith, #DivineIntervention, #SpiritualDiscipline, #TrustingGod, #CultivatingFaith, #GodInDailyLife, #TransformativeSpirituality, #FindingGod, #SpiritualHabits, #OpeningToGod, #DivineConnection, #SpiritualTransformation, #FearAndFaith, #TranscendingNeed, #DivineCommunion, #SpiritualCelebration, #FaithReinforcement, #GodInMoments, #EmbracingSpirituality, #InnerSpirituality, #RelationshipDynamics, #FaithObstacles, #SpiritualAwareness, #EasterJourney

We get asked often about the habits we have that strengthen our faith and help us put God at the center of our life and marriage. Many days our "ideal" list of habits doesn't happen, but we discuss some of the practical, small habits we've attached to other daily tasks that have been helpful for us whether or not those bigger "ideals" actually happen in a day. God knows the desires of our heart and His presence and love never change.
