Matthew 15:29-16:4 | Kingdom Now: The Prerequisites of Grace

"Christmas is DYNOMITE"

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2026 43:37

In this message from Matthew 15:29–16:4, Pastor Karl examines two very different groups of people who come to Jesus — and what their approach reveals about how we receive grace. The first group comes from the Decapolis, a Gentile region with no religious standing or covenant claim. They bring broken bodies, unspoken needs, and nothing to offer — and Jesus meets them with compassion, healing, and even provision they didn't know to ask for. The second group, the Pharisees and Sadducees, arrives with suspicion and a demand for proof — and Jesus refuses to perform for them. The contrast surfaces a powerful truth: Jesus has endless compassion for those who come to him needy, but no obligation to satisfy those who come feeling entitled. Unworthiness isn't a disqualification for grace — it's the prerequisite for it.Pastor Karl unpacks why the disciples hesitated to feed the 4,000 (it wasn't that they forgot what Jesus could do — it was that they questioned who he'd do it for), what it really means to "fall from grace," and why the cross is the only reliable lens through which to interpret God's love. When we bring our "not enough" to Jesus, we find that inadequacy is exactly the raw material he's looking for.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

1. Moses. Charlton Heston. The Ten Commandments. 603 other commandments. Mount Sinai. The Passover lamb. Many sacrifices. Works. Hearing and doing. Sins temporarily covered. Reminded of sins. 2. Jesus. The Lamb of God. Grace. The gift of salvation and righteousness. Faith. One sacrifice. Easter. The Resurrection. The Holy Spirit. Eternal forgiveness. Sins taken away. Sins remembered no more. The above is a nutshell version relating some headlines to two very different covenants. How is it that the church culture has embraced combining various portions of these covenants that were never meant to be mingled? Perhaps it's because the Bible is often considered "one book," or wrongly assuming the New was meant to be some type of addendum to the Old. Let's take a look at how badly the target has been missed with such a mixture of law and grace. God's grace (apart from law) is the recipe for us to reign in life and teaches us to deny ungodliness ... not advocating for an old or revamped law that was fulfilled and abolished by Jesus. "For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace." --Available on Amazon - "Clash of The Covenants: Escaping Religious Bondage Through the Grace Guarantee" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713ZSKY7

Dave Rich continues his examination of how Christians should approach the Old Testament law. This teaching tackles one of the most debated questions in biblical ethics: Are believers still bound by the Mosaic law? Rich methodically works through the traditional categories of moral, ceremonial, and civil law, revealing why these divisions—while useful—don't actually appear in Scripture itself. He demonstrates that the Bible presents the law as a unified whole, yet the New Testament clearly teaches that Christians live under a new covenant established at Christ's death. Through careful exposition of passages from Hebrews, Jeremiah, Romans, and the Gospels, Rich shows how the old covenant has been surpassed by something better. He explains the distinction between being legally obligated to Mosaic law versus learning from its wisdom and principles. The message addresses real questions believers face: What about the Sabbath? Food laws? Civil penalties? Rich provides clarity on which Old Testament commands still apply and why, helping Christians navigate Scripture with both freedom and faithfulness to God's unchanging character. Episode Summary Why is it so difficult to be good? In Part 3 of That They May Have Life, we move deeper into the heart of Christian morality. Because of original sin, our intellect is darkened, our will is weakened, and our passions are disordered. Yet Christ does not leave us there. He gives us grace. This session explores how virtue forms us from within, how conscience guides our moral decisions, and how law and grace work together to transform us into the image of Christ. Christian morality is not about “white-knuckling” holiness. It is about becoming the kind of person who can choose what is good quickly, joyfully, and with ease. Topics Covered Original sin and concupiscence How conscience works (and how it can be malformed) The definition of virtue as a firm, habitual disposition The cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance The theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity The role of the passions (love, joy, hope, anger, sorrow) Vice, virtue, continence, and moral struggle Natural law, the Old Law, and the New Law Sanctifying grace vs. actual grace Key Takeaways Virtue perfects freedom. Law trains us toward the good. Grace transforms us from within. Holiness requires cooperation with God.

In this sobering and soul-searching message, Pastor Karl dives deep into Matthew 5:17–48, where Jesus declares that He came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it—and then raises the bar of righteousness far beyond anything the scribes and Pharisees ever imagined.Through six piercing examples—anger that murders the heart, lust that commits adultery in the mind, casual divorce, manipulative oaths, retaliation, and hatred disguised as justice—Jesus exposes the truth we all try to avoid: outward obedience is never enough. God judges the heart. Every single one of us stands guilty before His perfect standard.Yet the bad news is meant to drive us to the best news. Pastor Karl powerfully unpacks how Jesus' command in verse 48—“You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect”—is not a cruel impossible demand, but the very reason the Son of God came. We cannot achieve the righteousness God requires, so God freely gives it to us through faith in Christ. Jesus took our unrighteousness and imputes His perfect righteousness to all who repent and trust Him.A hard-hitting, heart-exposing sermon that leaves no room for self-righteousness, but ends with the liberating joy of the gospel: guilty sinners can be clothed in the very righteousness of God and stand before Him as if we had never sinned. Since sin entered the world with Adam and Eve, we have been “in a war” and God is angry every day with the devil for hurting the ones He loves. It's grace that gets you from where you are to where God wants you to be, and it's grace that helps you understand the victory that God has already provided and shows you how to maintain a changed life. A foundational understanding that we are saved by grace and that Jesus gave us His righteousness helps us to live by the truth that sin no longer has any power over us! Jesus didn't take away the rules—He fulfilled them! If you find yourself following the rules in order to be righteous, then you will be unsatisfied because Jesus wants you to be righteous by grace and enjoy true freedom by relying 100 percent on the love of God!

The area has a strong presence of Protestant evangelical and fundamentalist Christians who collectively maintain a strong influence on religious beliefs based on social and political life. I'll be speaking with David about his spiritual journey, leading both he and his wife into pursuing a lifestyle according to the Laws of the Mosaic Torah, especially that of observing the Seventh-Day Sabbath and keeping biblical festivals in harmony with the teachings of the Dead Sea Scrolls Zadokite Ecclesiastical Calendar and faithfully adhering to the Torah's clean and unclean food laws. David and the Baptist Church he was pastoring stopped putting up Christmas Trees and partaking in whole-hog barbecues, the eating of pork shoulders, bacon, and a unique blend of seafoods such as oysters, clams, and shrimp. With all these changes, we'll learn how they affected not only his immediate family but also how the biblical Torah amazingly touched and changed the lives of the congregation he was pastoring as an Independent North Carolina Baptist Church. In this episode Justin dives into the role of the law in the life of a believer, emphasizing that while born-again Christians are no longer under the law but under grace, the law remains relevant for the unrighteous. Drawing from 1 Timothy 1:8-10, he explains that the law is designed for the lawless, sinners, and those contrary to sound doctrine, serving as a tool to bring conviction and humility by exposing sin and the need for a savior. Justin highlights the law’s purpose in breaking prideful hearts, leading to repentance and the recognition of Jesus’ substitutionary work, which imputes righteousness through faith, not law-keeping. He warns against misusing the law or shielding sinners from its condemning power, as it’s essential for guiding people to the cross, where true transformation and new life in Christ begin.

There is a wide array of different church affiliations out there around the world and many have *very* differing points of view on many different things. But there are some common threads found through the spectrum. First, most believe that they pretty much use the Bible as the source for their beliefs. Second, they mix an "old covenant" that Israel was under with a new and better covenant established after Jesus died. The first covenant came through Moses and was based on pursuing righteousness by works and deeds. The second came by Jesus Christ, bringing a realization of grace and the gift of righteousness *apart* from works and deeds. Two very different covenants—manifested at different times—and were not alike. Naturally, this begs the question: Why do so many Christians and churches feel the need to have a "balance" by mixing law and grace? We offer some possibilities on this week's program. --Available on Amazon - "Clash of The Covenants: Escaping Religious Bondage Through the Grace Guarantee" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713ZSKY7

In this episode of the Reformed Brotherhood Podcast, hosts Jesse Schwamb and Tony Arsenal explore the Scots Confession, focusing on the transformational role of the law in a Christian's life. In the small town of Hannibal, Missouri, there lived a man named Jack. Jack was known for his diligence and commitment to his faith.  He attended church every Sunday, participated in Bible studies, and was always eager to help with community events.  But Jack's journey of faith took him down two very different roads. Jack's journey began with an intense focus on the law. He believed that by following every rule and commandment to the letter, he would earn God's favor.  Jack meticulously observed every religious practice, from tithing precisely ten percent of his income to fasting twice a week.  He even kept a journal to track his good deeds and ensure he met his daily quotas. At first, Jack felt a sense of accomplishment.  He was proud of his discipline and enjoyed the respect he received from others in his church.  However, over time, the burden of perfection became too heavy.  Jack found himself becoming critical of others who didn't meet his standards.  He judged them harshly, believing they were less committed to their faith. One day, while volunteering at a soup kitchen, Jack overheard a conversation between two patrons.  They spoke of grace, love, and the freedom they found in Christ despite their imperfections.  This puzzled Jack. How could they speak of freedom when they clearly didn't adhere to the strict rules he followed?  Disillusioned and exhausted by his relentless pursuit of perfection, Jack decided to explore the concept of grace.  He began attending a different Bible study that focused on the teachings of Jesus' love and forgiveness.  The group emphasized that salvation was a gift from God, not something to be earned through human effort. Jack felt a wave of relief wash over him.  For the first time, he experienced the freedom of knowing that he was accepted by God despite his flaws.  However, as Jack embraced this new understanding, he swung to the opposite extreme.  He began to believe that since grace covered all sins, there was no need to worry about moral conduct. Jack stopped attending church regularly and let go of many of his previous disciplines.  His life became a series of impulsive decisions, justified by the belief that grace would always cover his actions.  He found himself drifting further from the community and the faith that once gave him purpose. One evening, while sitting alone in his living room, Jack felt a deep emptiness.  He realized that both extremes had left him unfulfilled and disconnected from God.  In his quest for righteousness through the law, he had become self-righteous and judgmental. In his pursuit of freedom through grace, he had lost his moral compass and sense of purpose. Jack turned to the Bible, seeking answers. He stumbled upon John 1:17, "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."  He began to see that true freedom in Christ was found in understanding the law and grace.  The law provided guidance and structure (right and wrong), while grace offered forgiveness and empowerment to live a holy life. Jack decided to rebuild his faith with this balanced understanding. He resumed attending church, not out of obligation, but out of a genuine desire to grow closer to God and his community.  He practiced discipline in his daily life, but with a heart of humility and reliance on God's grace. He extended grace to others, understanding that everyone was on their own journey of faith.

In today's homily, Fr. Anthony gives a lesson on spiritual development (Conscience, Law, Grace) inspired by St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians (3:23-29; 4:1-5); Brethren, before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.  Enjoy the show! PS. The homily got the sisterly seal of approval!

In wrapping up the series, Pastor Mitch Rose shared insights from Galatians 5:19-25 and John 15:1-5. He reminds us that the fruits of the flesh are always in conflict with the fruits of the Spirit and to feed the fruit of the Spirit, we have to remain to the source. In John 15:1-5, Jesus describes Himself as the true vine and us as the branches. To bear fruit, we must stay connected to Him where we will continue to experience pruning for greater fruitfulness. This pruning is God's way of helping us grow, not a punishment.
