Reformed Brotherhood | Sound Doctrine, Systematic Theology, and Brotherly Love

In this episode of the Reformed Brotherhood Podcast, hosts Jesse Schwamb and Tony Arsenal explore the Scots Confession, focusing on the transformational role of the law in a Christian's life. They articulate how the law, once perceived as a source of condemnation, is redefined through the lens of Christ as a source of encouragement and guidance. This transformation is likened to the role of a personal trainer, pushing believers towards spiritual growth and good works. With insights from John Knox, they emphasize the nurturing aspect of the law, which now serves to build up Christian identity and foster holiness. The hosts draw comparisons between the law's guidance and that of a drill instructor, highlighting its purpose in instructing believers on what it means to be a follower of Christ. They delve into the nuances of how the law, alongside grace, plays a vital role in the Christian journey, shaping the believer's understanding of their identity in Christ. This episode provides a rich theological discussion that connects historical doctrinal insights with contemporary Christian life. Moreover, Jesse and Tony provide updates on their community, encouraging listeners to engage with theological discussions and support the podcast through various means. They invite the audience to participate in their ongoing exploration of theological themes, emphasizing the importance of community and shared learning in the journey of faith. Key Points: The law's transformation from a source of condemnation to a source of encouragement through Christ. Insights from John Knox on the nurturing and instructive role of the law in Christian life. The comparison of the law's function to that of a personal trainer or drill instructor, guiding believers towards spiritual growth. Questions for Reflection: How does understanding the law as a source of encouragement change your perspective on its role in your faith? In what ways can the insights from John Knox enhance your understanding of Christian identity? How can the analogy of the law as a personal trainer inspire you to pursue holiness and good works?

In the small town of Hannibal, Missouri, there lived a man named Jack. Jack was known for his diligence and commitment to his faith.  He attended church every Sunday, participated in Bible studies, and was always eager to help with community events.  But Jack's journey of faith took him down two very different roads. Jack's journey began with an intense focus on the law. He believed that by following every rule and commandment to the letter, he would earn God's favor.  Jack meticulously observed every religious practice, from tithing precisely ten percent of his income to fasting twice a week.  He even kept a journal to track his good deeds and ensure he met his daily quotas. At first, Jack felt a sense of accomplishment.  He was proud of his discipline and enjoyed the respect he received from others in his church.  However, over time, the burden of perfection became too heavy.  Jack found himself becoming critical of others who didn't meet his standards.  He judged them harshly, believing they were less committed to their faith. One day, while volunteering at a soup kitchen, Jack overheard a conversation between two patrons.  They spoke of grace, love, and the freedom they found in Christ despite their imperfections.  This puzzled Jack. How could they speak of freedom when they clearly didn't adhere to the strict rules he followed?  Disillusioned and exhausted by his relentless pursuit of perfection, Jack decided to explore the concept of grace.  He began attending a different Bible study that focused on the teachings of Jesus' love and forgiveness.  The group emphasized that salvation was a gift from God, not something to be earned through human effort. Jack felt a wave of relief wash over him.  For the first time, he experienced the freedom of knowing that he was accepted by God despite his flaws.  However, as Jack embraced this new understanding, he swung to the opposite extreme.  He began to believe that since grace covered all sins, there was no need to worry about moral conduct. Jack stopped attending church regularly and let go of many of his previous disciplines.  His life became a series of impulsive decisions, justified by the belief that grace would always cover his actions.  He found himself drifting further from the community and the faith that once gave him purpose. One evening, while sitting alone in his living room, Jack felt a deep emptiness.  He realized that both extremes had left him unfulfilled and disconnected from God.  In his quest for righteousness through the law, he had become self-righteous and judgmental. In his pursuit of freedom through grace, he had lost his moral compass and sense of purpose. Jack turned to the Bible, seeking answers. He stumbled upon John 1:17, "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."  He began to see that true freedom in Christ was found in understanding the law and grace.  The law provided guidance and structure (right and wrong), while grace offered forgiveness and empowerment to live a holy life. Jack decided to rebuild his faith with this balanced understanding. He resumed attending church, not out of obligation, but out of a genuine desire to grow closer to God and his community.  He practiced discipline in his daily life, but with a heart of humility and reliance on God's grace. He extended grace to others, understanding that everyone was on their own journey of faith.

In today's homily, Fr. Anthony gives a lesson on spiritual development (Conscience, Law, Grace) inspired by St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians (3:23-29; 4:1-5); Brethren, before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate; but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe. But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.  Enjoy the show! PS. The homily got the sisterly seal of approval!

Dear friends,Would you say that the modern Western world we live is a very open, permissive culture in which people are free to do whatever they want, without being judged for it? Or would you say that we're a quite intolerant culture that scolds and criticises and cancels each another without mercy? The strange thing is that we seem to be both. Perhaps it's a case of mercy for me, but judgement for thee. But we can't seem to cope with the need for law and justice on the one hand, and grace and forgiveness on the other. In today's episode, we begin to see how Paul's argument in Romans holds together the important place of law and justice, alongside the necessity for forgiveness and a fresh start.Your brotherTony This is a public episode. In wrapping up the series, Pastor Mitch Rose shared insights from Galatians 5:19-25 and John 15:1-5. He reminds us that the fruits of the flesh are always in conflict with the fruits of the Spirit and to feed the fruit of the Spirit, we have to remain to the source. In John 15:1-5, Jesus describes Himself as the true vine and us as the branches. To bear fruit, we must stay connected to Him where we will continue to experience pruning for greater fruitfulness. This pruning is God's way of helping us grow, not a punishment.

Presence: A Global Conversation for a New Earth.

We continue to compare the new scientific discoveries related to our universe with our approach to a Christology that results in a Post Christian, Trans-religious outcome. The universe is the first story told by God. We propose that the Biblical Narrative mirrors and aligns with that story. Therefore the principles in our own universe provide a trans-disciplinary validation of our approach to Christology. It also illustrates how a divided, denominated Christology, interpreted as a religious form, is very problematic. Today we will consider and discuss both our universe and the narrative in terms of the movement Form, Trans-Form and Formlessness.

Law and Grace (Romans 5:20-6:4) Yearly Theme: “Goodness is… Grace” Series Title: “Course Correction: How Jesus Sets Things Right” March 17th, 2024 Follow along in the Bible App: http://bible.com/events/49227671 In our passage for discussion today, we will be exploring GOD’s wonderful gift of grace as contrasted with our (human’s) sinful state. Grace is how a person is “let off the hook” (so to speak) for things they have done or committed against another, be it GOD or neighbor. It’s the extension of GOD’s unmerited favor upon humanity even in the face of the atrocities of sin and death. No matter the amount or extent of the sins of humanity, GOD’s grace abounds all the more. But there is one great condition: A person must willingly receive this grace and leave a life of sin. Let’s take a closer look this morning:

The idea of Christians balancing law and grace is a common misconception in the church today. Yes, the Law is good and serves as a tutor to lead us to Christ, so it might seem logical that it brings stability to Christian living. But as believers, we are no longer under the Law. Trying to balance it with grace will only lead to a mixture of failure and victory. That's because sin thrives under the Law, but sin is dead under grace! In this eye-opening clip from the daily broadcast, you'll learn why it's erroneous – and even dangerous – to tell Christians they need to balance law and grace. You'll gain a deeper understanding of this important topic and be inspired by what truly teaches you to live an upright life!We hope you enjoyed this episode. A few years ago, Jen Wilkin coined the term “celebratory failurism” to describe an acceptance of the thought that Christians will never be able to fully obey because of total depravity. Wilkin pushes back on that idea, and she and Mike Kruger discuss why there seems to be a misunderstanding on total depravity, legalism, and obedience to the law. They discuss the struggle between antinomianism (lawlessness) and pharisaical tendencies (lawfulness) and find that the relationship between law and grace is: obedience that pleases God has right motive combined with right action.
