Oregon has one of the highest rates in the country for kindergarteners with vaccine exemptions. The state’s 7% rate is only lower than Utah’s (7.4%) and Idaho's (9.8%).  Ryan Hassan is a pediatrician in Happy Valley and also serves as the medical director for Boost Oregon, a parent group working to increase vaccinations overall through education. He says he’s seen coronavirus vaccine skepticism bleed into skepticism towards well-established vaccines against measles, mumps, rubella and pertussis. He says since the pandemic, an industry promoting dangerous disinformation about vaccines has itself spread like a virus. We talk with him about how he approaches conversations with parents of school-aged children, and how Boost Oregon is attempting to overcome disinformation with the truth about the medical efficacy and public health necessity of vaccinating against preventable diseases of all kinds.

Life took an interesting twist for Ryan in 2014. After the breakdown of a marriage, financial problems and a lifetime of not having the tools to handle negative emotions, he found himself in the depths of drug addiction. He was in a very dark place, using Ice & GHB everyday and running into trouble with the law. However, he was not only able to crawl out of that black hole, but was to become the most peaceful & happy he had ever been. This led him to completely immerse himself in how people end up in emotional pain and how it's possible for anyone to be free from it.This led him to opening The Centre for Healing (Formerly The Melbourne Centre of Healing), to help people who have found themselves in the pain he once was. Formula shortage affects Pacific Northwest families

A nationwide shortage of baby formula is proving stressful for families in the Pacific Northwest. Ryan Hassan is a pediatrician with Oregon Pediatrics in Happy Valley. He says he's been talking to his patients about practical solutions and counseling them on ignoring judgmental comments on social media about feeding babies with formula. Meanwhile, the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank has been fielding more calls from people interested in donating breast milk due to the shortage, according to Executive Director Lesley Mondeaux. The milk bank serves families with a prescription for human breast milk, which means the organization prioritizes medically fragile babies. But the milk bank is also able to help others on a short-term basis, Mondeaux says, especially if there is an increase in supply. We hear from Mondeaux and Hassan about how families in the Pacific Northwest are coping with the formula shortage.Meanwhile, the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank has been fielding more calls from people interested in donating breast milk due to the shortage, according to Executive Director Lesley Mondeaux. The FDA has just approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents 12-15 years old. Research shows that the vaccine works as well in this age group as it does in those who are 16 and older. Nevertheless, some parents still have questions and aren't sure about vaccinating their kids. Happy Valley pediatrician Ryan Hassan talks with his patients and their parents about immunizations, including the COVID-19 vaccine. He also gives presentations and answers lots of questions through Boost Oregon, a parents group focused on vaccine education. Ryan Hassan joined me from The Centre for Healing. Warning- "mention of suicide and drug use" Ryan was in a heavy spiral of drugs and reached a point where the choice was either death or jail or get help. Before that; He critiques me live on my first practice session doing Root Cause Therapy. Here how I went, as I did my first ever session on my teacher. I may have made the teacher cry, which in this instance was a great thing. Maybe I have a future in helping people with root cause therapy? Ryan and Mel run a successful root cause therapy business, along with teaching the modality to others who now use it to help people. Ryan speaks about being in jail, being heavily reliant on drugs and over dosing every second day. Ryan struggled with anxiety from Grade 3 or 4, but back then Ryan thought it was normal. Root Cause Therapy allowed Ryan to go back to the childhood memories that affected him. Those memories as adults don't seem like a big deal, but as a kid they are huge and that emotion and those feelings stick with you and cause a belief system in you. Introducing my chat with Nick Sutherland from Myndfit and Ryan Hassan from The Centre For Healing! From The Centre For Healing: At The Centre for Healing we pride ourselves in offering comprehensive programs which effectively help everyday people get to the cause and offer long-term recovery from addictions and mental health in a supportive and caring environment. Co-Founder Ryan Hassan has his own experience in recovering from his own addiction and mental health issues. His purpose and passion is to assist others to effectively and quickly get through their inner issues to achieve their external goals. He is often requested in the media for expert advice (Herald Sun, Fox FM and more) and he's highly sought after for speaking. He leads a passionate team of therapists who are both experienced and compassionate. https://thecentreforhealing.com.au/ From MyndFit: Nick Sutherland first started ‘State of Mind' in 2009, working from a home office in Mount Martha on the Mornington Peninsula, specialising in helping people to heal and overcome trauma in order to find peace and happiness. Whilst he enjoyed this work, Nick started to see patterns in that much of his clients ‘suffering' was connected to how they processed experiences and ultimately, how they perceived the world. The patterns also highlighted how the symptomatic problems clients presented with kept stemming from the same 5 core issues. This wasn't in just 1 or 2 clients, but hundreds. With this in mind, Nick started building a therapeutic framework based on the methodology of the “5 Fundamental Principles” as he called them, creating 3 programs that varied in length but all used the same methodology. https://myndfit.com.au/

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of ‘creating a good day’. It’s easy to achieve when everything is going well, but what about when you are in a moment of struggle? What you do in these difficult moments can change everything. In fact, the counterintuitive idea of allowing yourself to be vulnerable with your own emotions and with those around you may just be the answer. For too long, being vulnerable has been labelled as a sign of weakness, when in reality it leads to incredible strength and power. This week’s guest knows a lot about what it takes to be truly vulnerable and what can happen when you’re not. Only a few years ago Ryan Hassan had the “perfect” life, then his life was flipped upside down. He became addicted to drugs and found himself in trouble with the police. With the help of a friend he was able to turn his life around. Ryan is now the co founder of the Melbourne Centre of Healing and hosts his own podcast called “Shift Happens”. Ryan and I talk about how you can truly create a great day for yourself. We can't always avoid bad moments and we can't pretend that everything is okay when it is not. It’s all about embracing and owning those negative moments. It’s about allowing yourself to find and experience great power in your own vulnerability. Ryan grew up in Melbourne a part of a middle class family, where he looked up to his older brother as a hero figure. Growing up Ryan struggled with high anxiety during school. He thought that it was just something everyone experienced, not realising until years later that not only did he have high anxiety but he also suppressed his emotions and chose to distract himself with dangerous addictions. We talk about how Ryan came to terms with his emotions and how becoming more vulnerable helped him. Some topics Ryan and I talk about are: (4:00) “The Melbourne Centre of Healing” (7:30) Ryan’s downward spiral and the years leading into the drug addiction. (10:20) The meeting of Melissa the co founder of The Melbourne centre of healing and starting the walk to healing. (19:10) The strength in being vulnerable. (21:35) How to become more vulnerable in front of other people. (27:05) The “Rain” formula. (R- Recognise A- Allow I- investigate N- Nurture) Ryan’s explanation for the Rain Formula: Recognise - Recognise what the emotion is. Example “I am feeling anger" Allow - Allow the emotion to flow through you. Investigate - Investigate what is really happening behind the emotion. Nurture - Nurture the emotional energy in your body so we can properly process it. (36:30) What the idea of “Do Life Better” means to Ryan. (37:15) Ryan talks about his challenge for the week: Everyone you come into contact with, just simply connect with them for a moment, just make eye contact, and say to yourself this simple sentence - “That is simply me, living a different life” You can get into contact with Ryan at these websites below.
