Have you ever felt like your leadership journey was more about enduring pain than achieving success? In this sneak peek of a leadership development session held at Revere Church, I explore the challenges and pain often associated with leadership. It emphasizes that pain can be a catalyst for growth and the importance of developing healthy coping mechanisms. Drawing inspiration from biblical figures like David, the session highlights finding strength in faith and building a supportive community. My focus is to encourage everyone to embrace their leadership journey, acknowledging pain, and seeking growth through faith and connection with others. Some key topics include: The role of community during crises Pursuing purpose amidst pain Addressing personal pain The value of trust Balancing discipleship with individual beliefs The impact of presence Finding God's guidance during difficult times can bring peace and help overcome the fear of pain and of having to prove yourself to others. Carefully consider the cost of discipleship, but also know that the rewards of faithfulness are always worth the challenges. “Change has Changed” is a book by my friend Samuel Chand. Sam is not wrong, this world looks vastly different than it did 3.5 years ago. Change isn't the only thing thats changed, so have we as both individuals and organizations. Sometimes change is painful, it hurts but is necessary as we evolve and grow into the leaders and organizations that are equal to the task we've been entrusted to accomplish. Otherwise, “when you interpret your pain as bigger-more important, more threatening, more comprehensive - than your vision, you'll redefine your vision down to the threshold of your pain.” Sam Chand. Gerry Brisson and I are here today to talk about how we are managing change and using it to make our work stronger, more impactful and sustainable.

Recently, we hosted Leadership One here at Coastal Community Church. What he shared is not just applicable to church leaders, but also to all of us. This is Part One of 8 1. God is going to do something IN YOU! You may thing that God is just going to work THROUGH you for other people, but realize that God is doing INSIDE of you. Pride, areas to address etc. Rather than simply mimicking other people, realize who God has uniquely made you, how is He preparing you? Ask God: "What are you trying to do right now?" Leadership Pain: The Classroom for Growth by Samuel Chand 'growth equals change; change equals loss; loss equals pain; so inevitably, growth equals pain.' We don't need another __________ we need the first ___________. 2. It's not about YOU it's about the kind of team you're surrounding yourself with. The people around you are going to make you or break you! Develop culture based on the values that you hold high. People that are willing to do whatever it takes. Point to the team effort. #1 Tell your team there's never a mess that you make that I can't clean up. This frees them up to take risks, try new things, be creative. It enables them to lead. #2 If you're on board with the vision, every victory is yours (the team's) and every defeat is mine (the leader). "The best teams are made up of a bunch of nobodies who love everybody & serve anybody & don't care about becoming a somebody." - James Goll 3. Who you start with is not going to be who you end with. Starters are not always finishers. There are people that come in for the construction phase. The scaffolding. There are people that God uses for certain seasons. Of course it can hurt when someone leaves. Trust God for these transitions. Don't close yourself off or grow fearful. Have an openness in your heart to continue to extend trust. We live with an OPEN hand. We are a steward of people, they are GOD'S. 4. Your church doesn't have to be the greatest at EVERYTHING, but you better be great at something! Realize the value of different local churches or organizations. They may be the best at something, but you can be the best at something as well. Ask: What are WE really good at? For us, this is being a friendly, authentic and relational community that feels like HOME! This applies to career, home life etc. Find something you can excel at. The Purple Cow by Seth Godin We're a 10 in some area of life. We have something to contribute. David was HIMSELF in 1 Samuel 17. He was good at his craft. He brought what he had. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coastalchurch/message
Every leader knows that good leadership doesn’t come without experiencing pain… But are we equipped to handle that pain with the right kind of thinking? Dr. Sam Chand (a personal hero of mine and the President Emeritus at Beulah Heights University) knows the ins and outs of leadership success and struggles. His manyHis powerful life-journey and his many books and resources has helped leaders all over the world learn to release dreams, build a healthy team, and strong leadership development. He joins us in this episode to ask the real questions: “What does church growth have to do with leadership?” “How can I differentiate between good growth pains and my own stupidity causing pain?” “As a leader, what questions should I be asking my team in meetings?” “How can I handle change to the best of my ability?” Dr. Chand says it best: “There is no growth without change, no change without loss, and no loss without pain.” I can’t wait for you to listen.

Courageous leaders: more than a roaring lion. There are many definitions of courage. One of my favorite definitions is that courage is shown by the way we behave when things get tough. How we show up in tough times indicates a level of being authentic, being true to ourselves – so that when we are faced with the many challenges of our lives, how we behave is consistent. This definition then it leads me to believe that everyone has the capacity to be courageous. Three elements about courage: #1. COURAGE IS A LEADERS CHOICE “You can choose courage or you can choose comfort but you cannot choose both.” Brené Brown To begin to choose courage we must be honest within ourselves about the things we are fearful of. The lie we often believe is that we have to completely change who we are in order to be fearless leaders. Common fears that leaders dance with every day are: · Criticism “Leadership—all leadership—is a magnet for pain, which comes in many forms. We catch flak for bad decisions because people blame us, and we get criticism even for good decisions because we've changed the beloved status quo.” Samuel Chand · Failure “Failure is a necessary consequence in doing something new” Ed Catmull · Speaking “The idea of making a presentation in public is the No. 1 fear reported by people in the U.S. If speaking in public scares you, you aren't alone. It is even scarier than rattlesnakes," Paul L. Witt, PhD #2. COURAGE IS A LEADER'S OPPORTUNITY · To be qualified … · to engage in meaningful relationships where trust is built so that courage becomes a partnership with great people and great teams #3. COURAGE DEFINES A LEADER Lives defined by courageous leaders: · They are human beings, flawed and fearful just like you and me · There isn't just one life- changing moment that defines them · They consistently represent who they are authentically, in both the good and the bad times. Seek the opportunity to add the skills and relationships that will help you in your journey of courage. Notes. Brené Brown, B. (2019). The Call to Courage. Netflix Documentary Godin, S. Join Alex McManus for interviews with activists and missional thought leaders from around the world. Author Samuel R. Chand wrote the book "Cracking Your Church's Culture Code: Seven Keys to Unleashing Vision & Inspiration". Published by Jossey-Bass, October 2010. Chand discusses strategies for transforming a toxic church culture. He unpacks the question why the best strategic plans and good leadership often are not able to move churches in the desired direction. He contends that toxic culture is to blame. Quite often, leaders don't sense the toxicity, but it poisons their relationships and derails their vision. This work describes five easily identifiable categories of church culture (inspiring-accepting-stagnant-discouraging-toxic), with diagnostic descriptions in the book and a separate online assessment tool. The reader will be able to identify strengths and needs of their church's culture, and then apply practical strategies (communication, control and authority, selection and placement of personnel, etc.) to make their church's culture more positive. •Discusses how to diagnose the state of a church's culture•Reveals what it takes to put in place effective strategies for creating a more positive church culture•Author served on the board of EQUIP (Dr. John Maxwell's Ministry), equipping five million leaders world-wide.This important book offers a clear guide for understanding and recreating a healthy church culture.
