On this weeks agenda, Lewis gives us insight into Wrexham, detailing the unlikely friendship between actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney following their purchase of a Welsh soccer team. He also shares his thoughts on tv show, The Bear, starring Jeremy Allen White who plays a chef from the world of fine dining who comes home to his family's sandwich following tragic circumstances. Meanwhile, Cecilia reviews Clean, a documentary about the life of Australian businesswoman, Sandra Pankhurst who started one of Australia's most successful trauma cleaning services.
Clean is a documentary highlighting the incredible life and work of our dear friend Sandra Pankhurst. The genuinely inspirational story of how ‘trauma cleaner' Sandra Pankhurst responded to an unseen world with radical kindness. Sandra Pankhurst knew humanity at its worst, as well as its best, having lived many different lives: survivor of childhood abuse, suburban parent, drag queen, sex worker, funeral director, business owner, motivational speaker. Generous and formidable, she underwent transition in the 1980s and found her purpose running STC Services, a successful Melbourne trauma-cleaning business that she founded in the 1990s. For three decades, Pankhurst and her team – who've also survived tough times – have brought order and care to homes made chaotic by hoarding, addiction, violence and crime.Rebeckah Loveday, Miss Katalyna and our co-host Sasja Sÿdek discussed about their dear friend Sandra and her documentary film, and also Rebeckah's role as Sandra Pankhurst in the film. Clean will be in your local cinemas around Australia from 15 September! https://www.cleandocumentary.com/———————————Euniq is a queer transwoman producing music in Naarm. Decluttering and organising photos is hard. It can be a very overwhelming and time-consuming task and, naturally, photos belong to the very personal and sentimental belongings. Imagine how much harder it must be for a person who hoards.Unfortunately, there is quite a high part of our population with hoarding disorders, around 5%! However, there is help and we have the pleasure to learn from today's podcast guests: Angela Esnouf and Wendy Hanes from Hoarding Home Solutions, who are internationally recognised experts in their field. They generously share how friends and family members of people with a hoarding disorder or chronic disorganisation can help and what should be avoided. Some of the tips are:Leading with compassion and being patient.Being aware that organising is not a linear process. There needs to be a readiness for change, which can come and go.Understanding that - especially for elderly loved ones - photos can be a catalyst to tell their story and that it can help them make sense of their life and their legacy.Knowing that searching for the perfect solution can be paralysing. They also share some practical strategies on how we can help a loved one. We believe these strategies work for anybody, not just for people who hoard. You can find more information on Wendy's and Angela's website over at: www.hoardinghomesolutions.com.au. There are some free resources for you to download, lots of blog posts to learn from and a directory ‘Find a Provider' in which you can find a local, trained expert if you'd like further help. In today's episode Zoe answers your questions, including why she doesn't want to share more of her own story, which episode was surprisingly the hardest for her to record, why some episodes can't go to air, one of the hardest heart-breaking things about doing The Deep, the very popular question of how we find & select guests and so much more.Zoe also talks a little about early guest Sandra Pankhurst who was a major inspiration for The Deep. Since this episode was recorded, Sandra sadly passed away. She had an incredible life and was so generous sharing her story with the world. We are very grateful we got the chance to have her in our ears as part of Season One.
Sasja and Dean interview Sandra Pankhurst the Trauma Cleaner who generously shares her knowledge, advice, and suggestions.
Sandra Pankhurst was a spectacular person.A transgender woman, Sandra lived many lives - child abuse survivor, drag queen, sex worker, funeral director, trophy wife, government candidate, and CEO of the life changing business, Trauma Cleaning Services. Her and her team would enter the most harrowing of circumstances; crime scenes, the homes of hoarders, bio-hazards, and act without judgement or prejudice. The TCS' focus is compassion, and kindness.Earlier this weekend, Sandra Pankhurst passed away. She suffered from a serious pulmonary condition, and was believed to be in her late 60s. She was surrounded by her family, and her beautiful dog Moet. All of us at the Calm Ya Farm team pass on our deepst love and condolences.Thank you to Uncle Jack Charles for the acknowledgement of country. For more calming ideas head to our website.Subscribe to BRAVE, your new favourite free monthly newsletter here. Show Notes Ep 218 of Australian True Crime with Meshel Laurie and Emily WebbThe legendary Sandra Pankhurst, made famous as The Trauma Cleaner in the brilliant book by Sarah Krasnostein, passed away last week. Although she battled health issues for some years, Sandra never lost her sense of humour, her incredible generosity or her capacity for love. She was genuinely one of the most loving human beings I've ever met.A lot of the actual cleaning that Sandra and her team of trauma cleaners did, was in the homes of hoarders. They were hired by councils around Melbourne to go in and clean up homes that were made literally uninhabitable by people who were emotionally unable to throw anything away.Hoarding is actually a mental illness, and Sandra understood that implicitly. She approached hoarding clean up jobs as mental health jobs, and she went into those people's homes with compassion and sensitivity, and never wearing any kind of protective gear, not even rubber gloves which is extraordinary given the various bio hazards she often faced. We're re issuing our Sandra Pankhurst episode this week in her honour. She will be greatly missed. Book tickets to the Melbourne Podcast Festival forensics show hereBook tickets to the Yarraville Rowland Legge show here Pre order Meshel's book “CSI Told You Lies” here. Sandra Pankhurst is the woman behind the biography, ‘The Trauma Cleaner'. Sandra's job as a trauma cleaner has led her into dark homes where death, sickness and madness have suddenly abbreviated the lives inside. She is called on to deal with diverse trauma clean-ups, from unattended deaths and suicides, to cases of long-term property neglect where homes have, in her words, “fallen into disrepute”. Most people are surprised to learn that the police, firefighters or ambulances do not do trauma clean-up - that is why Sandra's work is varied and so often includes crime scenes, floods and fires. Sandra is also a transgender woman who was adopted into an abusive family and forced to live a malnourished life in a backyard shed. On this episode, Sandra gives us a glimpse of her story. Australian cleaning specialist Sandra Pankhurst has undertaken some of the toughest jobs imaginable. Violent crime scenes, meth labs, and hoarder's houses are all in a day's work for Specialised Trauma Cleaning Services, the Melbourne business she set up more than 20 years ago. She has used her own trauma, including an abusive childhood and experience as a transgender woman, to offer empathy and bring order and care to people who are often going through the worst experience of their lives. Pankhurst was the subject of Sarah Krasnostein's successful 2017 book The Trauma Cleaner.
Sandra Pankhurst is truly label-defying.A transgender woman, Sandra has lived many lives, rising above adversity. Her remarkable life is the subject of the internationally acclaimed, multi-award- winning book ‘The Trauma Cleaner’.Sandra (then “Peter”) was adopted into an abusive family, relegated to a backyard bungalow, malnourished, excluded from family life and escaped home in his teens.Marrying young, he soon realised it was not possible to continue his life as a husband and father – so he left that life to become Sandra -- drag queen, sex worker and a gender reassignment patient in the early 80s. With an enviable work ethic, she went on to become Australia’s first female funeral director, a trophy wife and a local government candidate.Sandra is now CEO of one of Australia’s most successful trauma cleaning businesses, transforming the filth and squalor of murder, suicide, drug dens, crime, and mental illness. The idea for her trauma cleaning business emerged when she was a funeral director, as there were no death/crime scene specialist cleaners. Sandra saw a gap in the market and created a business that combined her ‘neat freak’ CSI stain-removing genius with her next level ability to relate and connect to people in difficult situations, specifically in trauma. With a unique ability to treat her clients with unpatronising dignity and respect, she transforms their properties back to their former glory. An active advocate for aged care rights, disability, mental health and ethics, Sandra has recently been an Ambassador for ‘Becoming Colleen’, a documentary about a woman who transitioned at 82. Sandra is extremely passionate about making a positive impact on the welfare of people of all lifestyles in the aged care and mental health sector. As a public speaker, Sandra does keynotes, panel discussions, interviews and book-clubs, and has been featured on ABC Radio, Nova100, SBS, Studio 10, and in The Guardian, Herald Sun, Life Matters and The AustralianHer incredible story reminds us there can be an after, survival and a next chapter.Mentions:Website - https://www.sandrapankhurst.com.au/STC Services - https://www.stcservices.com.au/Socials:FB - Sandra Pankhurst - The Trauma CleanerLinkedIn - Sandra PankhurstInstagram - pankhurst_the_trauma_cleaner

Murder, suicide, hoarding and squalor, who cleans up the mess left behind? Sandra Pankhurst. Sandra now runs Victoria's largest privately owned trauma cleaning company, and as we learned when we met Sandra P and explored her personal journey in episode 11, she didn't travel an easy path to get to where she is right now. Today Sandra shares some tales of trauma's dirty little secrets... We also banter about her take on transgender rights, about her meticulous work in brothels and about the violent and brutal rape that was catalyst for stepping away from that line of work. www.sandrapankhurst.com.au www.tiffaneeandco.com.au --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/roll-withthepunches/message
'The Trauma Cleaner' Sandra Pankhurst has lived an extraordinary life. Adopted into an abusive family she emerged from neglect, malnourishment and violence, Sandra fathered children, failed her first marriage and sought out gender reassignment. From drag shows, brothels and violent rape she ‘rolled with the punches' and turned her life around representing multiple business and community committees and building Victoria's largest privately owned trauma cleaning company. Sandra's empathy, compassion and meticulous work ethic proves that with the right attitude, perseverance and human spirit we can thrive beyond our adversities. In todays episode we chat about some of Sandra's experiences and how she evolved through the continuous challenges life threw her way. To connect with Sandra regarding public speaking you can email tiff@tiffaneeandco.com.au and I will put you in direct contact. After a crime occurs, or when someone dies, the police aren’t responsible for cleaning up. That’s not their job. The coroner takes the body, the police conduct their investigation, and then everyone leaves. But the blood, and the rubber gloves, and the uneaten food in the refrigerator are all left behind. Sandra Pankhurst didn’t like imagining that. So she decided to clean it up. Criminal is a proud member of Radiotopia from PRX. If you haven't already, please review us on iTunes!
