Southampton rescued a dramatic late point at The Hawthorns as Cyle Larin's stoppage-time header secured a 1-1 draw with West Brom and extended Saints' unbeaten run to eleven matches in all competitions. After the high of knocking Fulham out of the FA Cup just days earlier, Saints struggled for rhythm against a well-organised West Brom side and spent much of the evening looking short of energy and attacking ideas. The result keeps Southampton three points behind Wrexham with ten games remaining in the promotion race, but it also felt like a missed opportunity to tighten the play-off picture. There was also concern over Leo Scienza, who was forced off in the first half with what appeared to be a groin injury – a potential blow to Saints' attacking options if he misses upcoming fixtures. On this week's podcast, the panel analyse whether the late point was valuable or frustrating, discuss the impact of Saints' squad rotation after the FA Cup win over Fulham, and debate whether Cyle Larin should now be leading the line more regularly.Attention then turns to Saturday's huge away trip to league leaders Coventry City, as Southampton attempt to maintain momentum and keep their promotion hopes alive heading into the final stretch of the season. Mark Griffiths looks to dig into the factors at play in the Welsh Cup semi-final defeat.
Are Swansea City suddenly in the Championship play-off picture? A rare away win means the Swans are now just five points adrift of the final play-off place - currently occupied by Wrexham. And with the two sides set to meet at the Cae Ras on Friday night, there is suddenly some extra significance on the match. Wrexham's injury list continues to grow - with Kieffer Moore's hamstring injury a cause for concern for Wales with the World Cup play-offs just a fortnight away.Having been top of League One since 22 November, Cardiff City were dethroned by Lincoln City on Saturday and are now four points adrift of the new leaders after a midweek draw in Barnsley. A blip, or something more concerning?

Chelsea stumbled past Wrexham 4-2 in an FA Cup display that was far more uncomfortable than the scoreline suggests, with a heavily rotated side looking disjointed, leaky at the back, and nowhere near the clinical edge of the Villa performance. Four goals should mean smiles. It does not.Simon is back solo and in full rant mode, tearing into a defensive performance that had no business being that sloppy against Championship opposition. Tosin and Benoit Badiashile were the particular targets of Simon's fury — two players who had every opportunity to make a case for selection and instead raised serious questions about the depth of this squad when the first team is rested. The silver lining? Port Vale await in the next round, and with a kind draw presenting Chelsea with arguably their best route to silverware this season, Simon asks whether this squad has the focus and consistency to take that opportunity seriously. A trophy is there for the taking — if Chelsea can be bothered to show up properly. But the FA Cup conversation quickly takes a backseat to the biggest game on the horizon — Chelsea vs PSG in the Champions League. Simon previews what promises to be an electric European night and asks the question every Blue is thinking: can Chelsea channel the spirit of the Club World Cup final and deliver a performance to remember against the French giants?

On this week's episode of The Joy of Football Podcast, with Martin Tyler and Neil Barnett, there's plenty to talk about after a dramatic FA Cup weekend. Neil reflects on his trip to Wrexham for the FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea, sharing what it was like to be at the Racecourse Ground to watch ‘his' Chelsea, whilst Martin expresses what it has been like to commentate on one of football's most remarkable modern stories. From the atmosphere around the club to the sense of romance surrounding Wrexham's rise, the pair dive into what makes the club such a unique force in the game right now. Elsewhere, the episode features some classic Joy of Football segments. “Letter from the Gantry” brings a brilliant story involving Sheffield United and Charlton kits that only Martin could tell. And, there's also Neil's VOICE OF PASSION, with his take on passing stats, plus reflections on how football has changed - from the way teams play to how supporters experience the sport. As always, it's a conversation between two people who have lived and breathed football for decades.

How do you react when your team wins… but still leaves you annoyed? Chelsea are through after a chaotic 4–2 win at Wrexham, but this was anything but comfortable. Chris and Joe get into a flat, disjointed performance, why the lineup and substitutions raised bigger questions, and why this felt like a warning sign despite the result. They talk Josh Acheampong's big moment, the players who are running out of road, and whether Chelsea are risking too much by constantly rotating and accommodating weakness at the back. Then attention turns to PSG: the size of the challenge, the revenge angle after the Club World Cup final, and what Chelsea have to do to stay alive in the tie. All that, plus the morning-after mood shift, Wembley hopes, and why this next week could tell us a lot about where Chelsea really are. Dharmesh Sheth is joined by Carl Anka, Jacqui Oatley and Dominic King to reflect on the weekend's sporting action. We begin with Saturday's Six Nations clash between England and Italy. England suffered an historic defeat in Rome, losing to Italy for the first time after 32 previous attempts by the Azzurri. Does this shock result mark the beginning of the end for Steve Borthwick? We then turn to the start of the new Formula 1 season. Our reporter Craig Slater joins us from Melbourne to discuss just how entertaining the opening Grand Prix was, with George Russell taking the win. Then it's on to the weekend's FA Cup action, with Max Dowman lighting up the One Call Stadium with an exciting performance, becoming the FA Cup's youngest-ever player as Arsenal advanced to the next round with a 2–1 win over Mansfield. With Arsenal still in all four competitions, we ask just how realistic a quadruple might be. Carl says he'll eat his hat — and his shoe — if Arsenal pull it off.Staying with the FA Cup, City came from behind to beat Newcastle 3–1 at St James' Park and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals and Dominic thinks Pep will end Arsenal this season with more trophies than Arteta. And it was Hollywood drama at the Racecourse Ground, where Chelsea beat ten-man Wrexham 4–2 after extra time.Next, it's another win for England's Lionesses, who beat Iceland 2–0 in a dominant display, peppering the goal with numerous chances. But with Spain in their World Cup qualifier group and only one automatic spot up for grabs, do the Lionesses need to be more ruthless in front of goal?We close out with a hot debate on Arsenal this season. Joao Pedro was unstoppable with a hat trick, Cole Palmer added his trademark quality, and for one brilliant afternoon Chelsea looked every inch a top-four side.Simon flies solo to break down a performance full of pace, precision, and genuine belief — the kind of display that makes the frustration of recent weeks all the more baffling. What changed? What does this mean for the Champions League race? And most importantly, can Chelsea actually sustain it this time?Simon also shares his unfiltered take on Saturday's FA Cup opponents Wrexham — the Hollywood club, the Ryan Reynolds project, and what it really means for English football when celebrity money meets pyramid romance. Are Leicester or West Brom really heading to League One? It doesn't look good for at least one of the midlands giants who are stuck in a battle for survival at the bottom of the Championship. At the top it is four on the spin for Coventry and their Christmas wobble seems a long time ago. They look well set for promotion to the top flight. Ipswich are chasing Middlesborough in second...is the rest of the top six how it will finish? Or are Hull and Wrexham still ripe to be picked off by the likes of Watford or Southampton? In League One Lincoln City are a point off the top but perhaps just as significantly they're ten point clear of third place Bolton. from fourth place down it is any one's guess with seven teams fighting for the three remaining play off places. Title, play off's and relegation are all still up for grabs in League Two...who has the momentum?Tom Clarke and Gregor Robertson round up all the latest from the EFL. Hosted on Acast.
