Episode Summary:Today I sit down with Emma Tynan, an Irish psychotherapist who specializes in medical trauma and chronic illness, bringing both professional expertise from over a decade as a nurse and personal understanding from her own chronic health journey. We explore the often-overlooked micro-traumas of chronic illness—how the real devastation often hits not during the big diagnosis moment, but in quiet daily realizations like the day you can't hold a spoon or write in a journal the way you used to.In this episode, we discuss:Why the recovery period after treatment can actually be the hardest timeThe unique challenges of having symptoms without a diagnosisHow to work with "different versions of yourself" each day using Emma's "money in your purse" approach to energy managementWhy our goals often need to shift from doing more to doing lessHow family and friends can unintentionally add to trauma through well-meaning but invalidating responsesEmma offers practical guidance for both those living with chronic illness and the people who want to support them, emphasizing that there's no universal experience of illness and the most powerful thing we can offer is simply asking and listening rather than assuming we know what someone needs.MEET DESTINY: Website / Instagram / BlueSky / YouTube / TikTokMEET EMMA: WebsiteSIGN UP FOR OUR NEXT LIVE WORKSHOP→Nervous System-Informed Care for Living With A Chronic Illness

Ocean Eagle: Embracing Our Traumas Through Breathwork | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this riveting episode of The Hopeaholics Podcast, Ocean Eagle, a recovery advocate, author, and breathwork facilitator, shares his profound journey from a traumatic childhood to over 25 years of sobriety and spiritual awakening. Born in Palo Alto and raised across California and Texas amidst the chaos of alcoholic parents, Ocean survived a violent upbringing marked by his father's abuse and the loss of his brother to a tragic car accident at 22. After totaling four cars and earning three DUIs by age 25, Ocean hit rock bottom, triggered by a confrontation with his father's disapproval during a quadruple bypass recovery. This pivotal moment led him to Alcoholics Anonymous in Burbank, where a heartfelt embrace from a stranger sparked his commitment to sobriety at 30. Now 56, Ocean has transformed his pain into purpose, having facilitated 16 women's and veterans' retreats, authored seven books, including The Gift of Desperation, and developed a powerful breathwork practice to help others heal trauma. He candidly discusses overcoming three sober divorces, raising four children, and embracing his spiritual calling as “Ocean Eagle,” a name gifted during a transformative retreat. Ocean's message, “Judging mistakes hides life's beauty,” resonates as he guides others to balance masculine and feminine energies and release past wounds.#thehopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover  #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #RecoveryIsPossible #Hope #wedorecover Join our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Follow the Hopeaholics on our Socials:https://www.instagram.com/thehopeaholics https://linktr.ee/thehopeaholicsBuy Merch: https://thehopeaholics.myshopify.comVisit our Treatment Centers: https://www.hopebythesea.comIf you or a loved one needs help, please call or text 949-615-8588. On today's podcast, Luis discusses his personal journey with trauma and nutrition, and how the two together have an impeccable ability to help people recover from stress and trauma.Luis shares his full personal story of childhood abuse, and how food was the only thing that could suppress and repress his pain. His personal experiences drew him towards a psychology degree, which he abandoned because of his dislike of the DSM and it's diagnostic rigidity. Simultaneously, he was working at a health food store, and began to see how much could be changed, both in himself and others, through dietary changes. When he began studying somatic psychology, Luis discovered the missing piece he had been searching for: how trauma is what prevents people from sticking to specific diets that could help people recover from certain health conditions.Certain foods and eating habits can allow us to tolerate the intolerable, and can become a dependence in order for us to relax, sleep, work, and more. In the Embodied Nutrition group, Luis teaches how foods can stimulate, depress, or balance the nervous system, and how to relate to the emotions and sensations arise when we practice "food sobriety."You can read more about, and register for, the Living Seasonally & Cyclically webinar here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/events/living-seasonally-cyclically-how-i-recovered-from-burnout You can read more about, and register for, the 6-month Embodied Nutrition group here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/slow-practice-nutrition-group----You can learn more on the website: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/ Learn more about the self-led course here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/self-led-new Join the waitlist to pre-order Luis' book here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-book You can follow Luis on Instagram @holistic.life.navigationQuestions? The Traumas of Police Work and Drowning Deaths, Special Episode. The badge doesn't always protect the heart. Retired Seminole County Sheriff's Sergeant Mark DiBona knows that truth all too well. After more than three decades in law enforcement, spanning from Braintree, Massachusetts to the heart of Florida, DiBona's battle wasn't just with criminals, it was with the lasting traumas of police work, the devastating toll of a baby's drowning death, and a fight for his own life. The episode is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other platforms. “I couldn't save that baby,” Mark shared in this episode of The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast now streaming on for free on their website, in addition to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn. “And that day nearly cost me my life too.” Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . The incident that nearly broke him happened in Seminole County, Florida, where DiBona had built a respected career within a sheriff's office, with 1,400 employees and nearly $170 million budget. Seminole County, nestled in Central Florida and part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metro area, is no stranger to public safety challenges. But few hit as close to home as the tragic, preventable death of a young child. The Traumas of Police Work and Drowning Deaths. Drowning: Florida's Hidden Crisis Florida tragically leads the nation in child drowning deaths. In 2023 alone, 97 children in the state lost their lives to drowning. Residential pools, bathtubs, and even buckets of standing water claim lives year-round, particularly during the spring and summer months. Lack of proper supervision, faulty or missing safety barriers, and elopement behaviors in children are just a few of the contributing factors. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. DiBona responded to one such scene: a baby in medical distress from drowning. Despite doing everything he could, the child couldn't be saved. “That was it for me,” he admitted. “I'd seen violence, accidents, suicides, but that baby…I still hear that day in my sleep.” The Weight of the Badge, Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. The Traumas of Police Work and Drowning Deaths. Law enforcement officers are at a significantly higher risk of developing PTSD than the general population. Studies show between 7% and 19% of officers experience symptoms consistent with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The causes? The trauma is layered and relentless: Regular exposure to gruesome scenes and high-stress situations. Emotional and psychological burdens from the decisions they make. Cumulative trauma over years without real recovery time. Isolation and internal pressure to "stay strong" at all costs. Mark DiBona was no exception. “I developed PTSD, depression, anxiety…and it showed” he revealed, pausing to reflect. “There were times I didn't want to live anymore. I didn't think I was worth saving.” You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. His Recovery and a New Mission But he was saved, through faith, therapy, purpose, and community. DiBona, now a nationally recognized speaker and advocate, travels the country as the “Rock Star of Mental Health,” speaking about suicide prevention, first responder wellness, and the traumas of police work. His voice is raw, honest, and hard-won. The Traumas of Police Work and Drowning Deaths. “I want every cop, firefighter, EMT, dispatcher, any first responder, to know: You can come back from the edge. I'm proof,” he said. The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. He co-founded Behind the Tin an initiative aimed at protecting those who protect others. His story, shared widely through podcasts, various news and radio outlets, and social media platforms like their LinkedIn and Instagram, is saving lives by shining a light on what he calls “the silent injuries” of the job. “I always considered myself a cop's cop,” DiBona said. “But I didn't know I'd have to learn how to save myself too.” Spreading the Word, Saving Lives Mark believes the issue of PTSD in law enforcement isn't just under-reported, it's dangerously misunderstood. The macho culture, fear of judgment, and lack of institutional support often silence those who are suffering. The Traumas of Police Work and Drowning Deaths. “We lose more cops to suicide than to gunfire. Where's the outrage? Where's the support?” he asked. With his Christian faith as an anchor, Mark now views his darkest days as fuel for his purpose. He regularly appears in news features, podcasts, and mental health panels, using platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to reach first responders in crisis.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing was only created in the late 20th century, but it's since established itself as a popular and increasingly used form of therapy. EMDR is especially recommended for children and adults dealing with trauma from physical or psychological violence, such as sexual abuse. It was discovered relatively recently in 1987, but that doesn't mean it's an alternative treatment; it's a clinically proven approach. According to charity PTSD UK: “One study showed up to 90% of single-trauma victims no longer have PTSD after only 3 90-minute sessions.” How does it work? How was it discovered? EPISODE 214 A traumatic event is defined as “a distressing experience that causes significant emotional, psychological, or physical harm.” Examples of traumatic events include such things as a car accident, a death of a loved one, a breakup, a loss of a job, or an ongoing series of events, like a chronic health problem, continuous physical, emotional or sexual abuse.  These traumatic events typically trigger a range of intense feelings and emotions, including fear, helplessness, and a sense of being overwhelmed.  Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is defined as “positive psychological changes that emerge as a result of struggling with adversity and trauma.” PTG includes the idea that individuals can not only recover from a trauma but also experience significant personal development and personal transformation from it. PTG involves changes in understanding oneself, others, and the world, and can include increased personal strength, appreciation for life, and a significant shift in priorities.  How can you use PTG to overcome any traumas you have experienced in your own life? Traumas are life's hardest moments, but can be the very thing when viewed as just a temporary setback that propels you into a new stronger version of yourself and create a significant positive impact in your life.   Out There on the Edge of Everything®… Stephen Lesavich, PhD Copyright © 2025 by Stephen Lesavich, PhD.  All rights reserved.
