On episode 66 of Outside The Studio: What is, as Rebecca Ward describes, a "paper tiger" and how do we differentiate real versus perceived threats? Rebecca Ward and Tessa dive deep into personal experiences of fear, an understanding how to regulate our nervous systems, and how adverse childhood experiences (ACE) influence our lives. Rebecca Ward is a therapist, speaker, and author with her new book, The Paper Tiger Syndrome: How to Liberate Yourself from the Illusion of Fear. Time Stamps (00:00) Who is Rebecca Ward? (03:20) What is a paper tiger? (09:50) Background on Rebecca and how she was lead to her work (14:10) How do we acknowledge the fear in our lives? (20:05) The ACE study and its importance (23:55) How did Rebecca process her fear in her own life? (25:55) Support systems and the huddle effect (28:30) The spirituality of how the nervous system is wired (31:30) How can we regulate the nervous system? (35:25) Can you remember a time you have felt truly fearless? (38:40) Developmental trauma and childhood imprints (44:50) Styles of therapy (49:55) Reparenting practice and examples Key Takeaways 1. A paper tiger is something that we fear, regardless of it being completely harmless. By reclaiming our lives from fear, we can begin to heal and move forward. 2. By regulating the nervous system both spiritually and scientifically, processing fear will become accessible. Having togetherness with a support system during that time is essential. 3. Childhood traumas leave an influential imprint for the rest of our lives. Reparenting the way our bodies react to perceived dangers makes processing emotions simpler. Experts say that just as some physical traumas need first aid, there are also times when a person may need psychological first aid to validate emotions, reduce stress and foster coping skills. Therapist Kevin Broderick, Family Services Emergency Response program manager, joins this episode of the Church News podcast to discuss how evidence-informed, gospel-centered psychological first aid can support individuals in crisis. During his career as a marriage and family therapist, Broderick has responded to local, national and international crises. Speaking with guest host and Church News reporter Mary Richards, Broderick shares experiences, offers five principles of support and details how to find resources to learn more.  The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. In this episode, I chat with Larry Yatch, a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Navy SEALs, author, trainer, and coach, about turning your trauma into success. Over the last 12 years, Larry reverse-engineered the elite processes, training, and mindsets used by Navy SEALs to develop a system that anyone can use to generate massive success in their lives. Today, Larry's mission is to help entrepreneurs harness the power of the Navy SEALs to break through barriers in their businesses. Throughout the episode, Larry talks about the effects of trauma in leadership. Most people think they have never experienced trauma because they connect it to a big life event, such as rape, death, child molestation, etc. We think that if we have never experienced those events, we haven't experienced trauma. However, trauma isn't connected to a major life event. It's a perceived loss of control. The less in control you feel in a situation, the riskier the situation appears, increasing the trauma you experience. We believe that if we can't control something, we'll die. However, we can actually use trauma to create success in our lives by using the lessons we learned during our trauma and applying them to our lives. Thank you, Larry, for chatting with me today and helping the audience understand how to use trauma for their benefit. Create the life you've always wanted!
