Send us a textBrittany is originally from a small town in Washington State. She is a 34 year old mother of six children and lives in Los Angeles California. She tested positive for drugs at her birth because her mother was actively using. As a result, she was taken away from her and placed in custody with her uncle and aunt. When she was one and a half years old Brittany was taken away from them by Child Protective Services. It was found out that besides being abused physically by both, she had been sexually abused by her uncle. At age of 2, she was adopted by the chief of police of the town and his wife. Brittany calls his adoptive father “my rock” because of the support he has given to her during all her life, despite of differences in opinions at times. When she was 11, her adoptive parents divorced and as it happens, it was a very traumatic for Brittany. To make it worse, she was blamed by her adoptive mother as the cause of the divorce. She stayed with her adoptive father for some time. Brittany comments that she had the tendency to hurt herself. Due to the duties of his adoptive father as a chief of police, there was nobody to look after Brittany during his long shifts. Brittany had to be placed in different foster homes. She was a rebel, at 12 years, she was placed in a treatment facility for difficult children; but she always found the way to run away from them. She escaped the treatment facility and being still a minor, she went to live with an 18-year-old guy. She was using drugs, having sex and doing all sort of things that a 15-year-old should not do. She was found by the police, and she was placed in a foster system, Brittany went to live to a foster home with thepastor of a church and his wife where she did not have time to misbehave, she was always at church. For one year she was with them, her foster parents did everything they could possibly do for her wellbeing, she wrote poetry and a diary to deal with her emotions. Brittany was diagnosed with a mental disability and addiction to substances because she was born from a drug addict mother. Then she was placed in an adult foster home where she thought she finally had found the family she was looking for; however, it did not last long, one week after she ran away and met a guy whom she was using drugs and having sex. At 19, she gave birth go her first daughter. She was diagnosed with HIV when she was on the 8th month of her third pregnancy. She was put immediately on a very effective treatment and reach viral suppression very quickly, and she was able to deliver a healthy baby boy. Now she has a family of four children living together, her children are negative, healthy strong and beautiful babies.Brittany practically has gone to hell and come back. She says that she is adherent to her HIV treatment because it represents well being for her kids and herself. She is in recovery from substance use and sober for 8 years now. She receives medical care at UCLA with Dr. De Ville. She is going to community college; her goal is to complete higher education and help children and teenagers to overcome their traumas. She is accomplishing what once she was told she was not going to be able to accomplish. Brittany's story is very intense and rough. It includes drug addiction, survival sex work, violence, rape, and sex trafficking. It also includes successes and accomplishments. It's a story of survival, recovery, and motherhood.Funding provided by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) Ending the HIV Epidemic Grant and the County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Health, This podcast is brought to you by the Los Angeles Family AIDS Network

This week on Depths of Motherhood, we explore the journey of men's rites of passage and also the transition into fatherhood. While much of our podcast centers on women's rites of passage, today's conversation shifts the focus to men—our partners, fathers, sons, and friends. This topic is raw, relevant, and deeply necessary for everyone, especially those raising boys, partnering with men, or seeking to build deeper relationships with men in their lives. Our guest, Dan Doty, a leader in the global men's movement, shares his heartfelt insights into the healing journey of men. Through his work as a writer, wilderness guide, and meditation teacher, Dan has guided thousands of men in reconnecting with their true selves, their families, and their communities. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing was only created in the late 20th century, but it's since established itself as a popular and increasingly used form of therapy. EMDR is especially recommended for children and adults dealing with trauma from physical or psychological violence, such as sexual abuse. It was discovered relatively recently in 1987, but that doesn't mean it's an alternative treatment; it's a clinically proven approach. According to charity PTSD UK: “One study showed up to 90% of single-trauma victims no longer have PTSD after only 3 90-minute sessions.” How does it work? How was it discovered? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: How can we live without regrets? What is the psychology behind the bystander effect? Many people say YES, Absolutely! Why? Because Trauma and abuse are passed down through generations unless someone breaks the wheel. Period. Still, since nearly 1 in 3 people are influenced by childhood trauma and many won't resolve it, does that mean that a huge part of our population is responsible to stay childless? And would that cause a population decline as a consequence? And if not? Are we then becoming an increasingly sick society?

Why did Nick switch to law enforcement? He burned out on medicineWhat does he miss the most: The team mentality. The fire crews that he grew close to. He felt certain they could handle whatever call came their wayWe talk about the struggles working a 48-hour shift with a rural fire department but also having to manage the expectation from the private ambulance company that you run calls in a much wider radius to include the city when neededSleep deprivation is a big factor in burnoutNick talks about his heavy caffeine intake and how he started having runs of dysrhythmia that later required a cardiac ablation for atrial flutterWhat does Nick not miss? Getting up to run calls. The tiredness. The anger and helplessnessI remember getting to my absolute wits end on those 48-hour shifts and having to call our supervisor and tell them we were done running calls because we were so tiredNick talks about how he could feel that stress and sleep deprivation damaging him in real time, like if his hand was on fireThe stress level of running those calls an hour from the hospital with no other paramedic on scene and having to perform high level skills has not been matched as a PA in the EDNick talks about how, even in law enforcement, his fear of the next call is not equal to what it was as a paramedicBrent talks about a time when Nick was so angry he started stabbing his seat beltDon't blame the patient for their medical emergencies and don't take your frustrations out on themNick talks about losing his temper on an innocent dispatcher after a hard nightWhy do we see more resiliency and less burnout on the fire side?Maybe the team mentality on the fire department, ability to move to slower shifts, debriefingWe all tend to get support after that horrific call that makes the news, but a bigger problem might be the micro-traumas that we all undergo day in and day outResiliency needs to be built into the system – you are going to get burned out and have a tough day at some point and it needs to be prepared forWe don't typically lie to ourselves that we are “okay,” we may genuinely feel okay. !!! What if you could turn your daily routine into a powerful grounding ritual?
Pastor Tina shares an incredible Word from God about how God brought her healing from her early life traumas and brought healing from more recent trials. She talks to us about how our challenges cause pain in our heart & soul and can cause us to distrust people and God. It's so tough to find joy in difficult trials in our lives, but if we allow our challenges to not effect us and spend time in God's Word to heal us! We have to trust God enough to allow him to heal us in our most challenging traumas. God created our brains to protect and survive trials and trouble, but pain and brokenness can cause us to be centered inside ourselves and not centered in God and His Word. A self centered life keeps us confused about why we are not where God wants us to be. Most of us center our faith on our circumstances and not God's purpose. We have to humble ourselves and not allow pride to give us an improper and unrealistic view of ourselves. We have to learn as believers to not be held or limited by our natural circumstances and difficulties. God uses what we experience in our trials to bring healing to others. Our mind is not our master! When we humble ourselves we see ourselves for who we really are. God is a merciful God, He's waiting patiently for you to center yourself in Him! He wants to heal you!

"There is nothing else in life I would rather be known as, or rather do, than play football. I never wanted to be alive and not have lived." Ryan Clark on the risks of playing football all his life. You have been asking and we finally made it happen, a conversation with just the Pivot talking about all things around the league, in life, in sports and some current hot topics that have sparked a more in-depth discussion. On this episode of the Pivot, in partnership with Fanatics, it's just the three guys—Ryan, Fred, and Channing—sitting down to talk about the latest in the sports world. With the NFL season kicking off, there's a been a lot to talk about, so we start it off by hitting on the headlines around the league. One major topic that's been heavy on the minds of everyone in the NFL and the fanbase which always becomes more pressing when we see one of our own go down with a head injury is CTE. It's something that's affected our Pivot family personally, having lost people we care about to it, and it shapes how the guys see their own futures after Tua's recent concussion and whether he will continue to play the game he loves or hang up his cleats. The guys dive into how the game always had the same risks, we just know more now than we did back then. Channing shares personal experiences and expresses his own fears with his health, while Ryan and Fred discuss the game that defined them for their entire lives and how they wouldn't change anything they did to play but also understand the unknown is scary and that new knowledge offers a different perspective but also doesn't change their love of the game. Will Tua come back this season—or ever? We dive into that, plus what it means to balance risk and living life, even when the game can leave a mark. For the guys, football is worth every hit. Along that topic, the news of Brett Favre's Parkinson's diagnosis sparked a lot of debate. It's a tough situation, but the guys are brutally honest on not being able to ignore the welfare scheme scandal Favre was caught up in, making it hard to have sympathy for someone who stole from the poor and is now trying to get pity through his diagnosis. The timing of it all angers Channing and Ryan and they don't hold back as to why. Moving to College football, UNLV's undefeated QB Matthew Sluka decided to leave the program despite his success because he didn't get what he was promised. This new NIL system is at a critical point, and we break down the challenges of giving young athletes so much money and responsibility while minimizing the adversity of teaching moments which seems to lessen the learning curve for college players by big paydays. Speaking of money, Bryce Young's situation with the Panthers came under the microscope as Andy Dalton took over the starting role this past week and led Carolina to a much needed win. The franchise paid the former No. 1 pick big bucks, but now he's benched after one season, so what's next for him? And before the guys wrap the conversation, Ryan challenges Fred and Channing to think about their lives and how they approach each day, wondering if they'd change anything looking back and define goals moving forward shaping what each's "life" Mission statements would be as the guys open up and get personal, sharing their journey, the whys and experiences that shape their thoughts. What is driving many people. Most of us. Is a lack of resolving. It's politically correct to validate everyone's pain and call it trauma. So on one hand you have an adult who suffered from severe abuse as a child, and on the other hand an adult who is still suffering from not making the football team. One was life threatening and the other was ego threatening. Making that statement will sound minimizing and likely gain me some criticism, but my point is to elevate the issue of resolution. The difference we find between the two is only the individuals ability to resolve the hurt. I know a lot of grown adults, me included, who have not had what they feel are big traumas, but they exist in an unsettled spirit. Often frustrated. Dissatisfied. Angry or sad. And they don't know why. I posit that the issue is not what happened to us and judging it's validity, but simply, have we, can we, resolve it?
