Are you leaving calf money on the table? Not long ago, a Holstein bull calf might have earned you 50 bucks, if that. Today, thanks to high beef prices and better breeding tools, that same cow might deliver a $1,000 calf instead. Beef-on-dairy isn't just a trend; it's changing how progressive dairies manage their herds and drive revenue. In this episode of The Milk Check, host Ted Jacoby III talks with CoBank's Corey Geiger and Abbigail Prins about how dairy farmers are rethinking breeding strategies and how those decisions are reshaping herd structure, replacement numbers, and profitability. Why some farms are holding onto cows longer How sexed semen and genomics are guiding breeding calls And how beef calves are becoming a serious income stream Whether you're breeding for replacements, premiums or profit, this episode unpacks how to make herd decisions that pay. Listen now to hear why the value of a cow's uterus might be higher than ever. Got questions? Got questions for The Milk Check team? We've got answers. Submit your questions below and we'd be happy to get back to you or answer your question on the podcast. Ask The Milk Check Intro (with music): Welcome to the Milk Check, a podcast from T.C. Jacoby & Co., where we share market insights and analysis with dairy farmers in mind. Ted Jacoby III: Welcome everybody to this month's version of the Milk Check, a T.C. Jacoby & Co. podcast. Really excited today to have two special guests from CoBank, Corey Geiger and Abbi Prins. We are going to talk about breeding to beef and the profitability of the dairy farm, and how that dairy farm profitability has changed over the years as this trend has come about, and what it means for the future of dairy. Excited to have this conversation, Corey, Abbi, thank you so much for joining us today. So Corey, what do you do? Corey Geiger: CoBank is actually short for cooperative banks, so we're the bank of cooperatives. We're part of the Farm Credit System. Abbi and I are part of the knowledge exchange division, so we have a group of 10 economists who work in dairy and animal protein, consumer package goods, digital infrastructure, and farm inputs and crops. I've been at CoBank for two years now. I have just started my third year with CoBank, and Abbi joined our team about a year ago. She can tell you a little bit about herself. Abbigail Prins: Thanks, Corey. I also joined CoBank about a year and a half ago. I helped cover the dairy and animal protein sectors, come from a very heavy dairy and agriculture background, originally from Tulare, California, based out of Minnesota now. We're excited to be on the podcast with you today, so thank you for the invitation. Ted Jacoby III: Abbi, Corey, thank you so much for joining us. Really appreciate it. So our topic today is going to be about breeding to beef and the dairy farm profitability, and how the whole breeding to beef trend has been affecting dairy farm profitability. Give us a little background on this trend of how more and more dairy farmers are breeding dairy cows in order to get cows to enter the dairy herd. More and more dairy farmers are breeding to beef and how is that affecting the dairy breed right now? Corey Geiger: I have a broad background, having been in the editorial team of Hoard's Dairyman for 28 years and a past president of Holstein USA, and this is a journey. It really involves a triple play. The first part of that triple play was gender sorted semen coming onto the scene. Then genomics came on the scene, and then it all kind of came together with the beef on dairy movement. Now, economics always enters the equation because if I were to come back and have a conversation with my late grandfathers and say, "We're breeding some of our prize Holsteins to Angus," they'd throw me out the window, thinking I fell on my head. But gender sorted semen came along.
We start this Monday a little somber as we send our condolences to the Hoard family as over the weekend they had to put down one of their family dogs Oreo, you will be missed Oreo! The gang reacts to the Dolphins preseason win over the Detroit Lions, listen to find out what they found to be promising and what they didn't like so much! Tobin rehashes his beef with Mrs. Tobin for throwing away his old Marlins memorabilia, and news hit that former Dolphin Xavien Howard signed with the Colts! Tobin is elated to tell everyone of Nikola Jovic's play in the FIBA Supercup game that happened yesterday (let's be honest he was the only one watching) We round out the hour with the gang talking about the Heats trade of Highsmith, and wonder why Draymond Green had to add his 2 cents about it!
We start the show on a somber note, sending our heartfelt condolences to the Hoard family after the loss of their beloved dog, Oreo. From there, it's all things sports and chaos as the gang breaks down the Dolphins' preseason win over the Lions—what looked promising, what didn't. Leroy shares what it's like to take a hit trying to hold onto the ball (hint: broken ribs!), while Tobin starts a QB debate that somehow turns into a heated argument over washing machines and virtual measurements vs. old-school chains. In Hour 3, Tobin gets exactly what he wants when he plays a Paul Finebaum clip to rile up Leroy over Michigan's punishment in their cheating scandal. We also dive into what the Dolphins should show in their upcoming game against the Jaguars, and discuss the Heat's surprising signing of Dru Smith, fresh off an Achilles injury. Plus, Leroy throws mysterious shade at Canes fans, and Tobin gets mocked (at least in his mind) over a Marlins ‘97 World Series shirt. We wrap the show with wrestling regrets, wild Marlins plays, Heat lineup speculation, and more Dolphins chatter—including Matthew Judon visiting camp and Tobin calling for Tua to torch Xavien Howard in Week 1. And of course, we end things with a round of Alright! Oh No! as Tobin gives flowers to the “Swedish Swish,” Leroy praises the Dolphins, and the Swifties of the show speculate a big Taylor Swift announcement.
S5E20 Volsung Poems: Two Poems of Atli (Part 5)David continues his series of not so short solo episodes, deep diving into the Poems of the Poetic Edda which inspired the Saga of the Volsungs. In this episode:The Lay of AtliThe Greenlandic Lay of AtliThese poems connect the legends of Atli the Hun, to his wife Gudrun and the poems of Sigurd and his decent from the Norse Gods. Atli kills Gudrun's brothers. Some would say to avenge Sigurd and Brunhilde. Others would say to obtain Fafnir's Hoard of Gold. Either way, it is the curse of Andvari's gold, leading to the deaths of generations of fathers and sons.We see in these poems the author favors the Giukung family, Gudrun, Hogni and Gunnar. Where previous poems placed them as the betrayers of Sigurd, Sigurd has been mostly forgotten here. Gudrun does grieve the loss of her great love, but she also hangs on to the love of her brothers and the bonds of kinship. The Giukung family are Goths, a Germanic Tribe. Sigurd joined their clan. But he betrayed the love of Brunhilde, of the family of Atli and the Huns. Gunnar is too smart to allow the hoard of Fafnir to fall into the hands of the Huns. It is returned to the bottom of the Rhine River. But the curse lives through Gudrun and she sees to the death of her two sons by Atli. In the next and final short, she will be remarried to a third king, and see to the deaths of two more sons. The Greenlandic Lay of Atli seems to be a fan fiction. Another take on the same story. The Greenlanders wished to see Gunnar and Hogni as Greenlanders, falling into the same trap of Atli. Blindly trusting fate and the bonds of kindship.Ways to support us:If you have been enjoying our show, please write a 5 star review on itunes to help spread our podcast to a wider audience:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/between-two-ravens-a-norse-mythology-podcast/id1604263830Buy Shawn and David a Beer or Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/tworavenpodcastFollow us for updates or send us a message on Instagram:Instagram: (@TwoRavensPodcast): https://www.instagram.com/tworavenspodcast/Check out David's writing: Walled Garden (https://thewalledgarden.com/davidalexander)Our podcast is part of The Walled Garden Podcast Network. From solo player escapades to pastry-themed peril, the hosts review each of the anthology's adventures, exploring what works, what doesn't, and what got eaten by a Bag of Devouring. Spoiler alert: It's not just gear. Along the way, they celebrate user-friendly design, lament undercooked storylines, and argue over which dragon deserves to headline the next Broadway musical. Solo character adventures introduce exciting mechanical wrinkles and make a case for letting that one friend who always plays rogues just go for it. Hoard magic items are flavorful, fun, and make players feel very important. Art and layout are top-tier. Even the dragons look like they moisturize. Death at Sunset and The Will of Orcus are clear standouts—fun, well-paced, and full of dragon drama. The Crossman family farm has been a cornerstone of legacy and love since 1925, when Walter R. Crossman first purchased the land. His son Bud joined him at 18, later expanding the operation with his wife, Sandy, to support their growing family. From remodeling the barn to boosting genetics with registered Brown Swiss, Bud was always innovating. Their dedication paid off when their daughter’s photo with a Brown Swiss landed on the cover of Hoard’s Dairyman, sparking pen pals and later visitors from around the world. In 1984, Bud earned national recognition in Nashville for his small herd, marking his first vacation in over three decades. Though Bud passed away two years ago, his family’s deep-rooted connection to the farm, and to each other, lives on in every acre.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In today's world, scarcity seems to be everywhere. Not enough money. Not enough time. Not enough security. It's easy to live like we're always behind, always grasping, always worried. But is that the full story? Here at FaithFi, we believe Scripture paints a different picture—one where scarcity isn't the final word. Instead, through Christ, we're invited to live with hope, wisdom, and trust in God's abundant care. The Root of ScarcityThe fear of “not having enough” isn't new. Ever since sin entered the world, our hearts have struggled with distrust. In John 10:10, Jesus describes the enemy as a thief who “comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” And that's what a scarcity mindset does. It steals peace, kills joy, and destroys our trust in God's provision. This mindset urges us to hoard instead of share, grasp instead of give, and stress instead of rest. It traps us in anxiety—a form of slavery where our lives are defined by what we lack instead of who God is.Jesus doesn't leave us in fear. In the second half of John 10:10, He offers a better way: “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”This abundance isn't about luxury—it's about the richness of God's care. From the very beginning, God created generously. Genesis 1 shows a God who overflows with creativity and provision, filling the skies, seas, and land with life. He didn't create out of need but out of joy.As Elisabeth Elliot wisely said, “God has promised to supply all our needs. What we don't have now, we don't need now.”Jesus Offers Something BetterJesus lived simply, with no home of His own, yet He never operated from scarcity. He lived generously, turning water into wine, feeding multitudes, and offering forgiveness to all. In Matthew 6:25–34, He urges us not to worry, pointing to the birds and lilies as evidence of the Father's care.“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,” Jesus tells us, “and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). This is the antidote to fear: a trust-filled life focused on God's Kingdom. So, how do we break free from the scarcity trap? Here are a few biblical steps:1. Renew Your MindRomans 12:2 calls us to be transformed by the renewal of our minds. Ask God to help you see life through the lens of His abundance, not the world's lack.2. Practice GratitudeThankfulness shifts our focus from what's missing to what God has already provided. It's a simple but powerful habit that reorients our hearts toward trust.3. Embrace StewardshipWe are not owners but stewards. Everything we have is a gift from God. Proverbs 3:9 reminds us to “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.”4. Give in FaithDon't give out of fear—give out of faith. 2 Corinthians 9:8 promises that God will provide all we need so that we can abound in every good work.God Is More Than EnoughLiving in God's abundance doesn't guarantee an easy life. But it does guarantee we never face our challenges alone, and we never need to be enslaved by fear.So when the world says, “There's not enough,” we can respond with confidence: Our God is more than enough. His abundance isn't just material—it's spiritual. It's peace, joy, and confidence that our Father knows exactly what we need.If you're struggling with financial fear or anxiety, we invite you to explore our 21-day devotional, Look at the Sparrows. It's designed to help you shift from fear to faith as you grow in your trust of God's provision. Order a copy or place a bulk order today at FaithFi.com/Sparrows. There's no shortage of doom-and-gloom in the podcast world—especially in the gold and silver crowd. You know the type. The ones who spend half their airtime warning you that the dollar is about to collapse, the grid will go down, and that only silver coins will save you. I used to buy into that narrative too. I was a card-carrying member of the Zombie Apocalypse school of personal finance. I even listened to Peter Schiff religiously. But as time passed and I realized that zombies would not rule the world, I gradually became an optimist. I believe in the resilience of the U.S. economy. I don't think society is going to crumble, and I'm not prepping for Armageddon. That said, there is one warning from the doom crowd that's absolutely true—and it's not a matter of opinion. It's a fact. The U.S. dollar is losing value. Fast. That might not feel dramatic. But it should. Because it means that if you're sitting on cash—thinking you're being conservative—you're actually guaranteeing yourself a loss. Robert Kiyosaki said it best: “Savers are losers.”It's a clever phrase, but it's not a joke. It's reality. Inflation isn't a glitch in the system—it is the system. In a country running record-breaking deficits and drowning in debt, the only viable solution is to devalue the currency. In other words, print more money. And whether that inflation comes in at a “modest” 2% like the Fed wants, or 7–9% like we saw in recent years, the outcome is the same: your money loses purchasing power. A dollar in 1970 had the buying power of nearly $8 today. So if your dad tucked away $10,000 in a shoebox thinking he was doing you a favor, that money is now worth a little over $1,200. Even the money you saved in the year 2000 has lost nearly half its value. Inflation is the background noise of our economy. It's always there, always working, always eroding. Slowly when things are “normal.” Fast when they're not. So what do you do? Well, if you're keeping large chunks of money in a savings account paying less than 1% interest while inflation clips along at 3–6%, you are, without exaggeration, bleeding wealth every single day. It feels safe. It looks safe. But it's not. It's a bucket with a hole in the bottom. And you don't even notice until it's almost empty. That's why the wealthy don't hoard cash. They own assets that inflate with inflation. They buy things that grow in value as the dollar shrinks—because they understand the system. They don't fight it. They ride it. Real estate is one of the best tools in the game. Home prices tend to rise over time. Rents go up. But if you lock in a 30-year fixed mortgage, your payment never changes. So while the cost of everything else is climbing, your loan stays frozen. Meanwhile, inflation is silently reducing the real value of the debt you owe. You're paying it back in cheaper dollars every single year. Then you've got ownership in productive businesses. Sure, stock prices can swing in the short term. But long-term? Equities in companies with pricing power—companies that can raise prices when costs go up—often outpace inflation. And as an owner, you benefit directly. And finally, there are the scarce assets. Bitcoin. Gold. Precious metals. In a world where central banks can conjure trillions out of nowhere, things that can't be printed tend to hold real value—or even multiply it. This is how the wealthy play the game. While most people are watching their savings accounts decay quietly, the wealthy are stacking assets that appreciate. They are playing offense in a very predictable system. So those are the basics. But let me give you one more ninja tip from the wealthiest real estate investors in the world: You can print your own money by using debt. Think about it. Let's say you buy a $250,000 property this year using a 30-year fixed mortgage. You put 20% down, so you're financing $200,000. Now fast forward three decades.

I'll break down how blaming ourselves or others for being “lazy” ignores the real barriers - like overwhelm, poor mental health, executive dysfunction and more - and just piles on more shame. Let's get honest about what's actually holding us back and why reframing this idea matters. The Myth of Laziness in Relation to Hoarding Revisiting a previous episode's question: Are hoarders lazy? Arguments against the idea (hoarded homes require more energy to live in, etc.) The aversion to external intervention reveals deeper issues than laziness Societal attitudes towards rest and productivity Internalised and external accusations of laziness The damaging effects: shame, isolation, distress Understanding Hoarding as a Mental Health Issue Hoarding as a coping method for difficult emotions Judgments of laziness overlook the disorder's complexity and nuance Such labels add barriers to seeking help and reinforce stigma Consequences of Labelling People who Hoard (or Ourselves) as Lazy Shame and self-criticism deepen the problem Laziness as a simplistic explanation that ignores underlying issues Possible root causes: executive dysfunction, decision-making difficulties, emotional attachment to items, avoidance, depression, physical disability, etc. The Harmful Cultural Narrative Around Laziness Societal pressures to be constantly productive Inaccuracies of the “we all have the same 24 hours” myth Differences in time and capability due to systemic inequalities Examples: physical ability, mental health, neurodivergence, responsibilities, discrimination Moral and Social Implications of the “Lazy” Label Care tasks are morally neutral (reference to KC Davis, episode 82) The negative cycle: shame leads to paralysis, makes it harder to seek help and make progress Laziness label used as a justification for lack of societal support Political and social consequences for marginalised groups Importance of community, support, and helping each other The Danger of Linking Self-Worth to Productivity The toxic culture of non-stop productivity and hustling Problems with feeling guilty for resting The spiral of self-worth being tied to continuous output The Limiting Nature of the Laziness Concept It shuts down further exploration of underlying problems Missed opportunities for self-compassion, empathy, and effective assistance Underlying Reasons for Struggles That Are Mistaken for Laziness Lack of motivation: exhaustion, depression, overwhelm Overwhelm due to the scale of the task Executive dysfunction (planning, initiating, processing tasks) Fear (of the process, of making wrong decisions, of consequences) Fatigue, burnout, and mental health struggles Being practically or emotionally stuck, lacking skills or knowledge Societal Structures and Individual Blame Blame placed on individuals ignores wider systemic and commercial influences Industries profit from reinforcing personal inadequacy (beauty industry analogy, storage solutions) The cycle of self-blame, shame, and attempts to “fix” via consumerism Breaking the Cycle and Moving Forward Recognising the myth of laziness enables real progress Compassion, curiosity, and support as healthier responses Encouragement for self-acceptance and seeking genuine solutions Buy your copy of Everything You Need to Know About Hoarding by Dr Lynne Drummond at cambridge.org/EverythingHoarding, and get 20% off with the discount code HOARDING20. #ad Links Podcast ep 57: Are hoarders lazy? Disgust is powerful. If our body believes something we ingest is contaminated, we will throw it up before our mind even knows what happened. But is there a good kind of contamination? Teacher and author Bille Hoard makes the case that disgust can make us reject “euconaminants,” too—the people and qualities that can “infect” us with goodness.Billie Hoard is "a trans woman, teacher, author, and something of an Anabaptist radical.” Billie and her brother, psychology professor Paul Hoard, are co-authors of the forthcoming book “Eucontamination: Disgust Theology and the Christian Life” (Cascade Books), a psychological, theological, and sociological exploration of disgust, purity/contamination, and being transformed by what's trueFind Billie's work at billieiswriting.substack.com and connect on IG/Threads @billieiswriting Find your guides at Quoir Academy! In June 1912, two workmen made a discovery in the London mud that would stun the antiquarian world: a hoard of gold, pearls, rubies, emeralds, and jewels from around the world. Handed over to antiques dealer George Fabian Lawrence, or ‘Stony Jack', the Cheapside Hoard became known as the greatest cache of Elizabethan and Jacobean jewellery ever found.Professor Suzannah Lipscomb is joined by Victoria Shepherd, author of Stony Jack and the Lost Jewels of Cheapside: Treasure and Ghosts in the London Clay, to tell this extraordinary true story of empire, ambition, and buried treasure—a glittering mystery that still captivates historians and treasure hunters today.More: A Tudor Mystery: The Girl who Could be Queenhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/7ah4FWEOjfcDKCK9QVFmVETudor Queens: The Power of Jewelleryhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/3WCKhj0ORpANADDzIdot6kPresented by Professor Suzannah Lipscomb. Through a full decade of pro football — 1990 to 1999 — Leroy Hoard specialized in zapping the will to fight from defenders. His goal? Make you quit by the fourth quarter. The sight of No. 33 in Cleveland and No. 44 in Minnesota barreling through defenses helped define this glory era of the sport itself. Hoard ran with power, speed, attitude. And oh my, he has stories to share. The former NFL running back hangs out on the Go Long Pod to relive it all. During a Pro Bowl season in 1994, Hoard led the Browns to the playoffs with 1,335 total yards and nine touchdowns. Of course, he also remembers the scene in ‘95 when the Browns played their final games at Municipal Stadium. He'd later resurrect his career with the high-flying Vikings of the late 90s. Full audio and video is above, and available within your Apple and Spotify feeds. I'll share the written transcript later today.Topics include…* Life as a running back in the 1990s, from the old AFC Central to the NFC Central.* Growing up in New Orleans' dangerous Ninth Ward.* The worst collision of his football life. * The time the Browns moved from Cleveland to Baltimore. * The time he arrived in Minnesota on a Tuesday, started on Sunday and it felt like living in China. * Concussions. Pain. Life has been hard for Hoard since he retired. Did he have suicidal thoughts? Was he depressed? Hoard explains this empty feeling. * Finding purpose as a radio commentator today at 560 WQAM in South Florida. * Bill Belichick. His former coach in Cleveland has made offseason waves. We get Hoard's thoughts. * Analysis on the Browns today, Kevin Stefanski and the failed Deshaun Watson experiment. Thank you for fueling our independent journalism here at Go Long and sharing with a friend.Hoard previously hung out with us back in November 2021 if you'd like to check out that conversation, too.Miss our Browns column this week? The sky darkens. The earth trembles. Something ancient has stirred. This week, Alicia and Terra summon the myths, monsters, and majesty of the dragon—creature of flame, guardian of secrets, and symbol of power both divine and deadly. From the thunderous serpents of Chinese legend to the bone-cracking beasts of European lore, we journey through the global history of dragons: where they come from, what they meant to the people who feared or worshipped them, and why their image still burns bright in our imaginations. Are they gods? Are they demons? Or are they mirrors of our deepest desires and darkest instincts? Sharpen your blade. Speak the true name. And don't forget to bow—they've been waiting.

Beowulf is the product of a profoundly religious imagination, but the significance of the poem's Christianity has been downplayed or denied altogether. The Word-Hoard Beowulf: A Translation with Commentary (Angelico Press, 2023) is the first translation and popular commentary to take seriously the religious dimension of this venerable text. While generations of students know that Beowulf represents a confluence of Christianity and paganism, this version—informed by J. R. R. Tolkien's theory of language as the repository of myth—opens the hood to track the poem's inner religious workings. It brings to light the essential Old English vocabulary, incorporating into the translation the divine titles used for God, specific names for evil and nonhuman creatures, and the precise language employed for providence and fate, along with terminology for kinship and heroism. Such features are not found in any other modern English translation, including Tolkien's, whose text was never intended for publication. The Word-Hoard Beowulf draws upon Tolkien's ideas and commentaries, however, to render a poem whose metaphysical vision takes front and center, delivering a richly restorative version of this early medieval masterpiece. The text is preceded by an introduction detailing the poem's religious motivations and cultural context, and is accompanied by an expansive commentary. In short, this version allows readers to perceive precisely how in Beowulf (as Tolkien puts it) “the new Scripture and the old tradition touched and ignited” to produce the earliest English epic. Peter Ramey is Associate Professor of English at Northern State University, where he teaches courses on medieval English literature, Latin, and linguistics. He has published articles on Beowulf and on Old and Middle English in Modern Philology, Philological Quarterly, and other scholarly journals, while also writing for a broader audience in his essays in Public Discourse and Front Porch Republic. Daniel Moran earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. in History from Drew University. Is now the time to stop investing and start saving cash instead? As an “asset bubble” balloons larger and larger, every investment is looking overpriced. Homes are at all-time high prices with massive mortgage payments, stock price-to-earnings ratios are reaching dangerous levels, and Bitcoin is hovering around six figures. We constantly talk about how consistently investing in real estate leads to long-term wealth, but is now the time to pause? J Scott, the author of Recession-Proof Real Estate Investing and expert flipper, multifamily investor, and more, has significantly shifted how he's using his money. While deals were plentiful before rates rose, they're now much harder to find—and not just in real estate. Who knows which tech and AI stocks will be worthless in a few years and which cryptos will crash? So, what should you do with your money at this inflection point in the economy? Should you hoard cash and wait for opportunities, or follow the “dollar-cost averaging” advice and invest regularly? Will doing so cause you to miss out on opportunities if the economy begins to shift? We're asking J his take in this episode! In This Episode We Cover J's current investment portfolio and why he feels he has too much real estate Exactly what J would do today if he were given $100,000 to invest The 2025 “asset bubble” that has already formed (will it pop?) In this study, two basal diets were fed, one low-fat and one high-fat. The low-fat diet contained cottonseed meal and cottonseed hulls and the high-fat diet contained whole cottonseed. This balanced fiber and protein to try and make the difference between the basal diets and just the fatty acids. Basal diets were supplemented with two different fat supplements that had different ratios of palmitic and oleic acids. The applied question at hand was “Does fat need to be supplemented to a high-fat basal diet?” (5:32)The low-fat diet contained 1.93% fatty acids and the high-fat diet contained 3.15% fatty acids. Fatty acid supplements were fed at 1.5% of dry matter and replaced soyhulls. The palmitic acid supplement contained 80% palmitic acid and 10% oleic acid. The palmitic + oleic acid supplement contained 60% palmitic acid and 30% oleic acid. Thirty-six cows were used in a split-plot Latin square design, with half the cows on each basal diet. Under each split-plot, cows were allocated to a 3x3 Latin square, evaluating a control treatment (no fat supplement), palmitic acid supplement, and palmitic + oleic acid supplement. (8:46)Bill, Adam, and Clay discuss the increase in milk components the industry has experienced recently due to the powerful combination of genetics and nutrition. Hoard's Dairyman reported that 2024 was the first year that the U.S. had averaged over 4% milk fat going back to 1924 when records began. (13:01)Both fat supplements increased milk yield in low-fat and high-fat basal diets, but the magnitude of the increase was larger in the low-fat diet. The high palmitic acid diet increased milk yield more in cows fed the low-fat basal diet than the palmitic + oleic supplement did. High-fat basal diet cows had similar milk yield responses to both fatty acid supplements. The panel discusses the industry emphasis on milk components and if/when a threshold in performance might happen given the advancement of genomics and nutrition. (15:51)Clay asks Adam to remind the listeners about the relationship between fatty acids and crude fat or ether extract. Adam recommends moving away from ether extract and focusing solely on fatty acid content. Bill, Adam, and Clay talk about the variability in the fatty acid content of various feedstuffs. (25:33)Bill asks if the feed efficiency improvement with the fat supplementation was due to more of a gross energy or digestible/metabolizable energy effect. Adam suggests it may be a little of both. The diet is more energy-dense, but we also know now that some of those specific fatty acids have specific effects. Improvements in NDF digestibility are consistently observed with palmitic acid supplementation. Oleic acid improves fatty acid absorption and has an impact on adipose tissue metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Bill and Adam go on to talk more philosophically about the best way to measure feed efficiency in dairy cows. (29:02)If Adam could do this experiment over again, he would have pushed the basal fat levels a bit more and had both lower-producing and higher-producing cows in the experiment. This leads to a discussion of how the results might have differed if distiller grains or soybeans were used instead of cottonseed in the experiment. Listeners should be careful not to extrapolate the results from this experiment to other fat sources. (33:55)Adam emphasizes that we shouldn't be afraid of feeding high-fat diets, either basal or supplemental fatty acids, especially to high-producing cows. We should be very mindful about where those fatty acids are coming from. We could provide the same nutrients by feeding either cottonseed or distillers grains, but how those ingredients feed out could be very different. (38:38)In summary, Clay agrees we should take a fresh look at how much fat we're feeding cows in basal diets and underlines the importance of the source of supplemental fatty acids. Bill concurs and commends Adam's group for basically making cottonseed without fat in the low-fat basal diet, which allowed for very clean interpretations of the fatty acid supplement results. Adam underlines that we can feed higher fat diets, but the fatty acid profile of all of those ingredients we might use is going to be key. In addition to fatty acids in diets and supplements, de novo synthesis of milk fat from acetate is the other half of the equation. Bringing those together might be a strategy to keep up with genetic improvements and drive higher milk fat yield.
