And be honest, how long have you been procrastinating returning those items? I see it all the time - clients have clothes, toys, household items that they've bought (usually online) and they need to return them for whatever reason, but instead of doing the admin of the return, they sit in boxes and bags in our loungerooms, spare rooms and studies.I've recently experienced this with left over supplies from our renovation. We finished the reno and then I gathered all the things that we had over purchased, or not needed ready to return. But it's such a hard task to get excited about. you've got to find the receipt, put everything back in the car, then when you get to the shop you have to get everything out, explain etc and go through the process.But... please hear me - IT'S WORTH IT!!Your returns and refunds are a tab open in your brain, the stuff you're waiting to return is clutter in your house.ACCC Warranties and Refunds Join our community Leave a Google ReviewFollow me on InstagramFollow me on FacebookJoin my Facebook groupLeave a review on Apple PodcastThank you to my sound engineer, Jarred from Four4ty Studio. Injury happens to all of us, and the frustration is real. Some quick tips today on how to stay organised while you have an injury.Firstly, remember to rest - the decluttering and organising can wait, and it's not worth making an injury worse to achieve a tidy home.Next, ask for help - to accommodate your needs right now, or to help tidy so it's not bothering you so much. Maybe write yourself a list on your phone of areas you'd like to declutter when you're able. And think of ways you can organise to make life easier with your injury. Bring high use items down to easy to reach spaces or repurpose your bedside table or coffee table - get creative so you can rest and recuperate or reduce the frustration at least with your reduced capacity.Join our community Leave a Google ReviewFollow me on InstagramFollow me on FacebookJoin my Facebook groupLeave a review on Apple PodcastThank you to my sound engineer, Jarred from Four4ty Studio Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. The higher the number of items you have either in a category or in your home, the harder it is to get it organised, and harder it is to keep it organised. One thing I love about maths is that both sides of the equation balance out... so the opposite is also true... the lower the number of items you have either in a category or in your home, the easier it is to get organised, and easier it is to stay organised.ABC ArticleThis is week two in our two week series on DECLUTTERING MATHS

Forget what other people, or the media might tell you is important - what is important to you? And go for that! So we have 8 text books in near new condition that nobody wants. And it's a dilemna for me - I can't find anywhere to donate them and feel bad throwing them out - a challenge many of my clients feel not only about their text books, but about many items in their house in general.So... for me I'll offer them to the school and if nobody wants them I will recycle them... unless a listener reaches out and can share a charity who sends texts overseas to developing schools!!If you too are struggling to get rid of text books, here are some tipsSell or donate them as soon as you're finished with them to have a higher chance of them being reused by someone elseSee if the school or college would like them to share with students who can't afford their own text booksAnd ultimately - recycle them if you can't get rid of them. Maybe they belong at the bottom of your wardrobe on a shoe rack or in a catch all tub. Maybe you have storage at your front or back door. The key is to use the system you have, and if it's really not working, design something new. Most important is that you stick with the system once you have it in place. If you get stuck on the idea of if something sparks joy or not... here is a new test you can use to decide if you want to declutter something or keep it. It's the poop test. Ask this question when trying to decide if something should be decluttered or kept... "if it was covered in poop, would you clean it off or throw the item away?"If you picked up your running shoes and they were covered in poop, would you clean them, scrape off the poo, take the laces out, soak the shoes and then wash and dry them. Would you do that? Or would you just throw them in the rubbish? The fundamental idea is that if you create a framework for decision making, it will make it easier for you to make decisions. And the framework needs to fit your values. If you're someone who wants to be surrounded by items that bring you incredible joy, use the spark joy frameworkIf you're more of a practical person, use the need it, use it, love it frameworkIf you're someone who needs to visualise poo on an item to decide if it's worth cleaning to keep... them use that framework!!I'd love to ask you to leave a 5 star Google review today - it takes less than 2 minutes and it will make a huge impact on others confidence to listen/ engage/ join with our community and services around the world. When was the last time you got genuinely excited about doing a stocktake in your home? Oh man, it's one of my FAVOURITE things to do, especially in the kitchen. In my house, we call a kitchen stocktake EAT YOURSELF OUT OF HOUSE AND HOME and the concept is we use up as much as we can from our fridge, freezer and pantry over the month of June. One year we saved $1000 in groceries by cooking and eating food which we'd already purchased! The best place to start with a stocktake is your kitchen, but you could do it with clothes, toys, business supplies, office supplies, kitchen plastics... wherever you keep inventory (so basically everywhere) you can do a stocktake for the purpose of knowing exactly what you have and then deciding exactly what you think you'll need in the future.Learn how to do a stocktake in your home, how it can help you save time money and energy (new word... monergy!!)I'd love to ask you to leave a Google review today - it takes less than 2 minutes and it will make a huge impact on others confidence to listen/ engage/ join with our community and services around the world. Think of it as your way of giving back :) https://g.page/r/CaTTEYtgIiQTEBI/reviewYou may also like to listen to these episodes:Running OutPantry 101Opportunity Cost/ Cost Benefit AnalysisJoin our communityBecome a Patron – your monthly donation makes a huge difference to me being able to produce this podcast. Pareto Principle

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2024 14:19

Today we explore Pareto's Principle. Also known as the 80/20 rule or law of the vital few.For example, you wear 20% of your clothes, 80% of the time.Kids play with 20% of their toys, 80% of the time.In any given category in your home, are you using just 20% of what you have? does your 20% work hard for you so that the 80% is unnecessary?Practically...could you reduce your wardrobe by 80%could you reduce your kids toys by 80%could you reduce your shoes by 80%could you reduce your serving wear by 80%could you reduce your make up by 80%could you reduce your ornaments or nick knacks by 80%Its also a helpful principle when you're wondering why it's so hard to be a minimalist in an area in your home (or everywhere in your home). it's not that you'll never need the 80%... it's just that you don't need it very often. And that for something you'll need 20% of the time - boy you're keeping A LOT OF THINGS IN THAT CATEGORY.What's wrong with the 80% that they're not making the cut?I'd love to ask you to leave a Google review today - it takes less than 2 minutes and it will make a huge impact on others confidence to listen/ engage/ join with our community and services around the world.
