Psychiatrist Carolyn Rodriguez studies hoarding disorder and says that all of us have attachments to our possessions. But for many, these attachments can disrupt daily life and even pose health risks. For those with loved ones who struggle with hoarding disorder, she says treatments exist, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Lately, she's been studying how virtual reality can augment CBT through virtual discarding practice and ways brain stimulation may improve symptoms. But, Rodriguez says, never underestimate the value of empathy for those in need of help, as she tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? If you've been putting it off, consider this podcast episode as a sign to clean up your clutter! As we get swept up in the busyness of life, we inadvertently let things accumulate. We outgrow our clothes or forget the items we've once loved and the gifts we've been given. Over time, we stash these items away to make room for new stuff we need or want. Out of sight, out of mind, right? Sadly, no. These items tend to pile up, consuming space in our homes and in the back of our minds. If you're ready to free up that space and finally tackle that pile in the corner that's been haunting you for months, Darlene Brock and Julie Bender can advise on where and how to start. In this episode, they talk through how you can define 'clutter' and share a series of questions designed to help you determine whether you should truly hold onto something or toss it. They also dish on some cleaning perks that will keep you motivated. If you still need a little extra push, consider Darlene's clutter-cleaning mantra: "I live in a home, not a storage unit." Quote of the episode: “If you want to improve your life immediately, clean out a closet. Often what we hold onto holds us back.” —Cheryl Richardson Resources Related "Tips to Declutter Your Life and Mind in the New Year" "Is It Just Clutter Or Is It a Hoarding Disorder?" The difference between hoarding tendencies versus hoarding disorder. Let us understand the fine line between habits and disorders. Angela Brown and Diane Quintana talk about hoarding habits versus hoarding problems. Diane knows a lot about organizing and cleaning up clutter. She explains the small but important differences between these two things. Angela shared stories about her husband's difficulty with clutter when they moved, making the conversation more relatable. Diane emphasizes that hoarding disorder goes beyond mere clutter; it disrupts daily functionality by rendering spaces unusable for their intended purposes. She illustrates this with examples of extreme cases where entire rooms, even bathrooms, become inaccessible due to excessive hoarding. However, she clarifies that having an overstuffed closet or occasional difficulty letting go of items doesn't necessarily constitute hoarding disorder. Throughout the conversation, Diana offers practical advice, such as using "marinating boxes" for items that individuals are hesitant to part with, allowing them time to make decisions without succumbing to anxiety. She also advocates for gradually closing the loop on unfinished tasks, emphasizing the importance of addressing clutter piece by piece. Overall, this dialogue provides valuable insights into recognizing and managing hoarding tendencies, offering hope and guidance to those grappling with clutter-related challenges. #HoardingWorld #AskAngelaBrown Chapters: 00:00:00 Introduction 00:02:18 The Stress of Moving 00:03:46 Hoarding Tendencies vs. Hoarding Disorder 00:05:31 Overstuffed Closets vs. Hoarding Disorder 00:06:06 Closing the Loop SPONSORSHIPS & BRANDS ------------------- Today's #ClutterCornerLive sponsor is #SavvyCleaner training for house cleaners and maids. - https://savvycleaner.com/join And your host today is #AngelaBrown - https://g.page/r/CbMI6YFuLU2GEBI/review ** HELPFUL RESOURCES ** (“Paid Link”) -------- Sustainable Excellence: Ten Principles To Leading Your Uncommon And Extraordinary Life - https://amzn.to/48HKAXw A No Nonsense Guide to Organizing Your Home - https://amzn.to/49AzPXL Decluttering at the Speed of Life - https://amzn.to/3FZCsFD The Sentimental Person's Guide to Decluttering - https://amzn.to/3jxFRDX REPROGRAM YOUR MIND SLEEP TAPES ---------- The New Normal Sleep Tape - https://youtu.be/ebLJJA6rUHw The New Tape | Affirmations Of A Clean and Orderly Home | "I AM" - https://youtu.be/n13ZBvaCMjw * When available, we use affiliate links, and as Amazon Associates, we earn on qualifying purchases. The Sunk Cost Fallacy is a cognitive bias that sees us continuing a behaviour despite evidence that it's not effective because we have previously invested significant resources, time, money and / or effort. And if we step away from our investment, it will become a loss. For hoarders, we see this manifest as ' I've kept it this long, I'd better keep hold of it. Or I paid so much for it, I'd better keep it.' "they very much do in their mind feel like they're saving the animal. And many times they are the person who truly did save that animal that they found on a highway. That they took an animal from a place that was objectively unsafe for the animal and brought them into their home. We think we deserve it, first of all. Of course I call myself useless because I'm clearly useless. And we also think it will motivate us. We think we can't give ourselves an easy time because if we just keep giving ourselves a hard time, it will push us to do the thing we have been trying and failing to do, or the thing that we've not even tried to do, but we feel we should do.For the full show notes and transcript for this episode, visit the website at Overcome Compulsive Hoarding / http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/ Become a Dehoarding Darling https://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/darlingQuestions to ask when dehoarding: https://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/podquestionsTwitter: @ThatHoarderMastodon: @ThatHoarder@mastodon.onlineTikTok: @thathoarderoch https://www.tiktok.com/@thathoarderochFacebook: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder / https://www.facebook.com/Overcome-Compulsive-Hoarding-with-That-Hoarder-104370761703319Pinterest: That Hoarder / https://www.pinterest.com/ThatHoarderYouTube: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder / https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSxMqB_fGckbGOQZpkl6l9gReddit: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder / https://www.reddit.com/r/overcomehoarding/Help out: Support this project / http://www.overcomecompulsivehoarding.co.uk/support-this-project/There is strong evidence that CBT can help people who hoard and accessing therapy online can be affordable and accessible.
