This week, we interviewed the quintessential San Francisco sibling duo, Greg and Valerie Landau. Greg is a music and video producer, educator, and historian with 8 Grammy-nominated albums. Valerie, a Harvard-trained expert, specializes in innovative teaching and AI-infused education tools. Their lives were shaped by the influential 1960s and 70s in San Francisco as they grew up in The Mission District and Noe Valley. As children of poet-activist Nina Serrano and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Saul Landau, Greg and Valerie were influenced by the city's political upheaval as it became one of the most progressive cities in the U.S. Their parents' dedication to humanitarian causes like the civil rights, anti-Vietnam War, pro-choice, and gay rights movements, left an indelible mark on Greg and Valerie. These values continue to shape their work in education and the arts, and we're eager to share their stories with you on Beyond the Fog Radio. Meet Valerie and Greg Landau! Comrade Adam and Comrade Commissar Don tackle a hugely complex and fascinating topic this week and next: the guerrilla movements and insurgencies that were exploding all in Central America from the 1970's to the early 1990's. As an introduction into this vast historical landscape, we read through Saul Landau's 1993 book, The Guerrilla Wars of Central America. In Part 1, we provide a general overview of the book, Landau's approach in telling the history, and come critical points to consider in journalistic histories of guerrilla movements. After that, Comrade Adam takes the lead on talking through the Sandinista movement and guerrilla warfare in Nicaragua up to the late 1980's. A sound portrait of Cuban writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante, a one-time leader in the Cuban cultural revolution who fell from favor and went into exile in London in 1965. Intense and compelling, Cabrera Infante was passionate about cinema, satire, puns, tongue twisters, and about his lost love — Cuba. In 1967 he wrote his best-known work—Three Trapped Tigers—a steamy, experimental journey into 1950s nightlife in Havana. In the 1970s he suffered a massive mental breakdown and was treated with electroshock and lithium. He was the author of over a dozen books, translated James Joyce’s Dubliners into Spanish, and wrote a screenplay adaptation of Under Volcano and the script for the film Vanishing Point. Cabrera Infante’s cinematic, jazz-like writing, comes to life in this story rich with music and interviews with cinematographer Nestor Almendros, painter Jesse Fernandez, activist Saul Landau, and the writer himself. Actors Lazaro Perez, and Ilka Tanya Payan are heard in dramatizations from Cabrera Infante's acclaimed novel, "Tres Triestes Tigres." Cabrera Infante lived in London with his wife Miriam Gomez until his death in 2005. Produced by The Kitchen Sisters as part of NPR’s series Faces, Mirrors, Masks: Twentieth Century Latin American Fiction.

Will the real terrorist please stand up. Will the real terrorist please stand up.
