Proverbs: An introductionProverbs is all about pursuing harmony with God and others through the pursuit of wisdom. Ultimately this harmonyis found only through the work of Jesus Christ. Proverbs is all about becoming wise in the everyday stuff of lifethrough a relationship with Jesus through the gospel. Because Proverbs is written in a different style than other bookssuch as the Epistles and Gospels, it is important to understand some basic principals for understanding and applyingthe wisdom it contains.Guiding Principles for Wisdom-Integration with Life: The principles of Proverbs are to be integrated into your life (for the long view of life, notovernight solutions).Gender specific: There are different principles given to both genders based on the biblical definition ofcomplementarian gender roles.Repetition required: Proverbs repeats itself in order to make a point; in the same way, we are to repeatedly practicethe principles given to us.Practical theology: Proverbs is “practical theology” meaning what God has to say “practically” about your life. Godis active in the details of His people's lives.Truisms not promises: Proverbs are truisms, meaning that they are things that under normal circumstances arealways true, but are not promised outcomes.Principles not methods: Proverbs are principles to put into practice in order to achieve a godly outcome, notmethods like “how to get rich” or “how to raise a good son”, and are often as equally about heart attitudes as they arethe practice. Early parenting shapes life course: Parenting matters. Preparing, instructing, modeling, and depending onthe grace of God for the raising of children in the covenant community matters!Wisdom is a person. The word for proverb in vs. 1 in the septuagent is the a word sometimes used for the parables ofJesus (John 10:6). Jesus is the “greater than Solomon” who instructs in the wisdom of the Kingdom. Empoweringgrace from God to those already in covenant with Him is the only means by which the wisdom of Proverbs can beprofitably heeded.Summation of the Book:“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”Proverbs 1:7, ESVFor more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. Baseball has so many truisms and the Mariners proved a few of them yesterday against Chicago as they gave a good hitting team extra outs (and got punished for it) and had their weaknesses exposed. Salk says the most frustrating part was France who had a bunch of chances to score runs and Mitch Haniger who is still not quite hot (no HR's since Aug 25). We revisit the first-ever KJ Wright Show to hear his perspective on Russell and his issues with never being named a Captain on the Seahawks. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's episode of Monetize the Mic, Margy and Jess are talking about the power of just taking the leap and implementing something, even if it's not perfect right now. "Do it, even if it's sloppy" is not universally good advice for every situation, but for some systems and strategies, you can implement now and clean up later without any major repercussions. You do need to be mindful and able to distinguish what advice is right for you in your business. Margy also shares some common dangerous truisms that you should be mindful of.

In this week's episode, art historian Robert Wiesenberger joins hosts Catherine Nichols and Isaac Butler to discuss artist Jenny Holzer's "Truisms" from 1978, "Truisms" is a group of declarative sentences Holzer first put up anonymously on posters all over New York City: "Labor is a life-destroying activity.," "Lack of charisma can be fatal," "Private property created crime." The work originated in a period when Holzer was frustrated with painting and turned to language as a more direct means of expression. "Language is a good way to convey meaning," as Holzer put it. Robert Wiesenberger is the associate curator of Contemporary Projects at the Clark Art Institute and co-author of Muriel Cooper (MIT Press 2017). Jenny Holzer's "Truisms" and "Inflammatory Essays" are brilliantly brutalist works of text-based art. Initially created between 1977 and 1982 the work is startlingly prescient and guaranteed to provoke a strong emotional reaction whether displayed as guerilla advertising or in a gallery setting. Then he left home, left the truisms behind him Still on the mantlepiece, met love, met war, Sordor, disappointment, defeat, betrayal, Till through disbeliefs he arrived at a house He could not remember seeing before. And he walked straight in; it was where he had come from And something told him the way to behave. He raised his hand and blessed his home; The truisms flew and perched on his shoulders And a tall tree sprouted from his father’s grave.

Comedy dynamo and my “sister” Yamaneika Saunders, (Netflix, Comedy Central, Comedy Cellar, Tru TV, Rantin’ and Ravin’ with Yamaneika (podcast,) kikis with Vox Celeste about growing up in the gypsy bastion of Aberdeen, Maryland; the hex put on her all-white Christian school; how she narrowly avoided a confrontation with the Klan and getting a major ass whopping from her mother, all on the same day. There’s also something about being left on the side of a highway. Warning: Odds of dying from laughter are pretty high.
Nick Mehta is the CEO @ Gainsight, the #1 customer success platform for corporate services, turning your customers into your best growth engine. To date Gainsight have raised over $156m from some of the world’s best VCs in the form of Lightspeed, Bessemer, Insight Venture Partners, Battery Ventures and Salesforce Ventures. As for Nick, prior to Gainsight he was the CEO @ LiveOffice where he grew cloud archiving ARR from $2m in 2008 to $25m in 2011 and drove and negotiated the acquisition by Symantec for $115m in cash. Before LiveOffice Nick was Senior Director of Product Management @ Symantec where he led $378 MM market-leading email archiving / security businesses managing over 180 people across 3 continents. I do also have to say a huge thank you to both Byron Deeter and Jason Lemkin for the intro to Nick over two years ago. In Today’s Episode We Discuss: How Nick made his way into the world of SaaS and came to lead the charge in the category creation of customer success as CEO with Gainsight? What were some of his big lessons from being CEO at 2 companies during 2 macro market crashes? What does Nick mean when he says, “customer success will fail if it is just a role and not a strategy?” What can the leader and CEO do to imbue this company wide approach to customer success? What tangible actions are on offer? What works? Where do many make mistakes? Nick has previously said, “burying customer success undel sales does not work”. Why does this have such a high rate of failure? What should the optimal sales to customer success relationship look like? What does Nick mean when he says, “product is to customer success what marketing is to sales”. How should product and customer success work together? Why does Nick believe the mythology of the “A player” when business building is fundamentally dangerous? What can leaders and CEOs proactively do to ensure a diverse and differentiated talent pipeline? What question does Nick find most revealing in terms of one’s character and potential? Where do many go wrong in building and scaling their teams in SaaS? Why does Nick push back against the “hire fast and fire fast” thesis? What are the negative consequences of it? Why is it short-sighted and premature in many cases? What does Nick suggest for individuals struggling to find their optimal role within an organisation? How much time does one give someone struggling to find their role? Nick’s 60 Second SaaStr: Who must fundamentally own the renewal, sales or customer success? What Nick know now that he wishes he had known at the beginning? What would Nick most like to change in the world of SaaS? Most surprising action that has moved the needle for a company in terms of retention? Read the full transcript on our blog. Bill Geary, co-chair of the upcoming DHIS, does Digital Health entrepreneurs a favor by spelling out what he sees as signs of a strong pitch. (See below.) We also review the highlights of the upcoming DHIS. The most profound Health Tech/Digital Health companies are either: (1) taking on novel clinical and financial risk for those highest cost and most in need or (2) providing critical solutions and services to those new and legacy risk-bearing organizations working to deliver on the opportunity in (1). I'm an optimist. Our industry is nowhere near overfunded and the market/need is enormous/largely unmet; it's that there are simply too many narrowly focused solutions providers that have raised too much capital masquerading as real companies and that's the coming reckoning. The five most interesting and best Health Tech/Digital Health customer/market segments are, in this order: pharma, self-funded employers, payers, consumers, and providers, while keeping in mind that every successful company requires penetration (perhaps simultaneously) in two of the five. No one region of the US dominates our Health Tech/Digital Health industry like it does in traditional tech; it's spread out among 10+ major metro areas including Boston, SF, LA, Minneapolis, NYC, Nashville, Denver, Houston, RTP, Chicago, and Austin. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning aren’t verticals. They’re a set of critically important technologies to be incorporated horizontally in every successful solutions provider, just like analytics. The more screwed up our US healthcare system the more opportunity there is for all of us to fix it: complexity + regulatory issues = profound potential cost-reduction impact, which is all about showing customers a 5:1 ROI with a ≤ 12-month payback. Just like in all other young emerging private companies, strength of team is most important, market opportunity is second, a compelling business model is third, and quality of product/solution is fourth. Don’t start at number 4 and work backward.
The land known as Mount Lebanon and which constituted under the Maan and Chehab dynasties the political entity governed by a local ‘Prince' after securing the sine qua non approval of the Ottoman suzerain, had few truisms inherent to it and embedded in its collective consciousness. The truisms comprised the selection of a somewhat just ‘Prince' assisted by a group of mostly loyal, but often perfidious notables. Within such mountainous elite the degrees of perfidy and corruption varied from one century to another and sometimes within the same decades. The ‘Prince' was generally viewed as a ruler with no official religion, and an arbiter of causes who is presumed to have an acute sense of equity and justice. He stood above all the rest since by birth he belonged to a princely line, and not to any particular feudal family, or a region or just a community. This placed him in a unique position of impartiality. The Maan's were Druzes whereas the Chehabs were Sunnis and later converts to Christianity. The first were from the Chouf and the second from Wadi Al Taym. Little did these local differences matter. The justice and equity of Fakhr El Din II were exemplary. That of Bachir II less so, but it was well known that under his rule a mule carrying a stack of gold could travel throughout the mountain with no fears of being stolen. Fakhr El Din II belonged to the political faction known as Qaisi, not a religious party. His opponents the princely Alameddines were the standard-bearers of the Yemini party, another non-religious affiliation. As far as religion was concerned it was noted that Fakhr El Din II, whilst a proud Druze, gifted Druze lands to the Maronite Church from as far as Nahr El Kalb to Jezzine. Prince Bachir II was born Sunni, lived like a Druze and died a Maronite, buried at the Armenian cemetery in Istanbul. Lineage, social status, and political partisanship were far more important affiliations than sectarianism. On the far end, the composition of the country's notable class was premised on loyalty and bravery in battles, not on religious grounds. Notables were from all confessions and regions of Mount Lebanon and beyond. Druze, Sunnis, Shia, Maronites and Orthodox clansmen bound together, from the cliffs of the Kesrouan to the ridges of the Chouf to the high Metn and Bekaa Valley. The notables were chosen to assist the 'Prince' in ruling the country based on their closeness to said ‘Prince': by allegiance to either the Qaisi or Yemini parties. Not by faith or remittances. No religion was favored and no gold in the world could buy a notable such a title, or a place at the Prince's table. Gold was always useful -but not indispensable- for winning the favors of the ruler but not to acquire feudal status. In essence gold was best left to souk merchants, to rapacious Ottoman Pashas, and to insatiable tax collectors. The notables of Mount Lebanon, in reality a grouping of tax farmers whose role was to collect the yearly tribute and raise a small army in times of war, had gained their status due, in part, to merit. Valor on the field (at the battles of Marj Dabik or Ain Dara) or loyalty to the princely household (Maan or Chehab), or both. This did not absolve this class from the sins of corruption and exploitation. Corruption was manifest, and exploitation was rampant in the treatment of peasants. These wretched souls toiled the land, worked menial jobs, paid their individual tax (the Miri), and answered the call of war without hesitation or much choice. For the peasantry which constituted the majority of the populace, the government or rather the ultimate source of power was situated far away in Istanbul. The sole representative of said power was ‘the Prince'. He was the only manifestation of such authority on earth. The ‘Prince' was in essence the government and vice versa. The notables were intermediaries between the former and the people. The masses rarely met the government, a.k.a. the ‘Prince',

As is traditional at this time of year we have the Super Bowl in America and we at Overdrive critically review the car ads that played during this "football" game. At $5.5 million dollars they charge to run a 30 second ad let alone the cost to produce them, you would think they would be good. We think the ads show truisms, lifestyle values, social values, pulling the heart strings, technology and humour. It is much more grand image than specific features. Will the real terrorist please stand up. Will the real terrorist please stand up.
