Today's show: Jason, Alex, and Lon cover everything from wild political headlines to big moves in AI and venture. They kick things off with the surprising Trump pardon of Trevor Milton, the disgraced Nikola founder, and break down CoreWeave's rocky IPO debut. Then, Jason and Alex sit down with Mariano Apodaca, founder of Prosperous AI, to talk about AI tools for negotiating construction and aerospace material costs. Later, in a brand new segment called "Office Hours with JCal," Jason reacts to real founder feedback clips, pulls key startup lessons, and explains why building for a market that doesn't yet exist might actually be your biggest edge. Along the way, the team explores the power of taking just 10% of the value you create — a pricing philosophy that could unlock your next big win.*Timestamps:(0:00) Jason kicks off the show!(4:05) Breaking news on CoreWeave and Founder University insights(9:21) Hubspot for Startups - Visit https://www.hubspot.com/startups and join the founders who are turning growth challenges into opportunities.(10:57) Trevor Milton's pardon and AnySphere's Cursor success(19:21) Pricing strategies for startups(20:19) Vanta - TWiST listeners automate your SOC2 and get $1,000 off at http://www.vanta.com/twist(21:38) AI sentiment and startup growth strategies(25:14) Guest interview: Mariano from Prosperous AI(30:21) Notion - TWiST listeners can try it for free at https://notion.com/twist(31:52) Prosperous AI's market data integration and growth(35:03) Founder University's impact on Prosperous AI(40:54) Product line expansions and fundraising growth strategies(44:20) Startup decision-making and investor feedback(47:02) Founder University and customer feedback importance(51:12) Canva CEO's insights and handling investor rejection(58:17) Products creating new markets and finding outlier founders(1:06:15) Venture success with Fred Wilson and Brad Burnham(1:09:18) Market selection, execution, and partner-product fit in startups*Subscribe to the TWiST500 newsletter: https://ticker.thisweekinstartups.comCheck out the TWIST500: https://www.twist500.comSubscribe to This Week in Startups on Apple: https://rb.gy/v19fcp*Links from the show:Prosperous AI: https://prosperousprocess.ai/*Follow Mariano:X: https://x.com/Mariano_APOLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mariano-apodaca-45b07a16a/*Follow Alex:X: https://x.com/alexLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexwilhelm*Follow Jason:X: https://twitter.com/JasonLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasoncalacanis*Thank you to our partners:(9:21) Hubspot for Startups - Visit https://www.hubspot.com/startups and join the founders who are turning growth challenges into opportunities.(20:19) Vanta - TWiST listeners automate your SOC2 and get $1,000 off at http://www.vanta.com/twist(30:21) Notion - TWiST listeners can try it for free at https://notion.com/twist*Great TWIST interviews: Will Guidara, Eoghan McCabe, Steve Huffman, Brian Chesky, Bob Moesta, Aaron Levie, Sophia Amoruso, Reid Hoffman, Frank Slootman, Billy McFarland*Check out Jason's suite of newsletters: https://substack.com/@calacanis*Follow TWiST:Twitter: https://twitter.com/TWiStartupsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/thisweekinInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisweekinstartupsTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thisweekinstartupsSubstack: https://twistartups.substack.com*Subscribe to the Founder University Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@founderuniversity1916

Once upon a time, when MTV played music videos, their more mature sister channel, VH1, had a show called “Where Are They Now”. The idea behind the show was to track down notable artists of previous generations to see where life had taken them once they'd stepped out of the spotlight. OK boomer, what does this have to do with the indieverse specifically, and the culture of technology more broadly? In most creative fields, whether it's art, fashion, architecture, etc., there's a deeply held sense of respect, even reverence, for the innovators who came before. The breadcrumbs of insights and artifacts or creation serve as a foundation of reference points for those who come after. But tech, as a creative field, feels different. Always forward, never back. There's frequently disregard, even contempt, for the innovators who came before. I often say we have the raw materials for any number of possible futures. Breakthroughs in AI, energy, chip design, crypto, biology — the future has never been brighter. As excited as I am to charge forward, I thought it would be valuable to look back. When I entered the venture market, it was in the wake of the dot com crash. Shortly after, my partner, Tim, popularized the term Web 2.0. Then, as now, there was a deep sense of hope starting to swell in technology. There were lessons to draw from and infrastructure to leverage to build upon, in addition to a renewed sense of optimism for the role technology could play in our lives. As we enter a similar moment in tech, I wanted to return to some of the innovators of Web 2.0 to see if there were any lessons to glean from their experiences, and to celebrate their contributions to the progress we're building on now. The first of these came up in our conversation with Charles from Are.na earlier this year. He and his team and had drawn inspiration from a popular Web 2.0 called Del.icio.us, known primarily as a shared, social website bookmarking service. I have known and respected its founder, Joshua Shacter, for years. We decided to trek to Mountain View for a catchup with Joshua on his past learnings and current projects. Joshua built Del.icio.us as a side project while working at Morgan Stanley, evolving it from his earlier project called Meme Pool. He didn't set out to build a startup - it was simply a tool to manage his own bookmarks that grew organically to millions of users. Within less than a year of raising funding from Fred Wilson at USV, Del.icio.us was acquired by Yahoo, where Joshua experienced the challenges of corporate bureaucracy and struggled with the loss of control over his product. The Web 2.0 era allowed for more experimental approaches, whereas today's entrepreneurs are highly focused on specific business opportunities, particularly in areas like AI tooling for business functions. Joshua believes that the current AI revolution has reset computing to a pre-6502 type era where fundamental architectures are still being determined, making it an exciting and challenging time for founders who need to balance innovation with market demands. When investing, Joshua looks for founders who are perpetually unhappy with their tools and constantly seeking improvement. He prefers to invest in weird ideas that make him think, “I never would have thought of that”, rather than incremental improvements to existing solutions. His approach is fundamentally engineering-driven, and he values founders who can engage in deep technical discussions. This one was a ton of fun. It's a new format for us, so be gentle with the feedback. We've already learned so much and hope to improve on it. We have a few more of these in the can and a few more lined up for the new year. If there's someone you'd love to see us catch up with, shoot us a reply with suggestions. As always, if you or someone you know are working on something that could be a fit for the indieverse, we're always on the hunt for our next investment. Finally, from all of us to all of you, wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons.

Leaders are increasingly challenged to understand how to respond to a polarized world. They are grappling with addressing division while embracing otherness. But to create welcoming environments in which each member feels recognized and comfortable being their whole selves at work, we must face our own need for belonging -- one that is often unmet. In REUNION: Leadership and the Longing to Belong (HarperBusiness; Nov. 14, 2023), executive coach Jerry Colonna urges leaders to consider the ways they have been complicit in, and benefitted from, conditions they say they'd like to change, and shows them how to create new systems of inclusion for everyone. In today's complex and divisive world, it is only through radical self-inquiry, a concept explored in Colonna's first book Reboot, that leaders can forge systemic belonging for everyone. Jerry Colonna is a leading executive coach who uses the skills he learned as a venture capitalist to help entrepreneurs. He is a co-founder and CEO of Reboot, the executive coaching and leadership development company, host of the Reboot Podcast, and author of REUNION: Leadership and the Longing to Belong (HarperBusiness; Nov. 14, 2023) and Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up (HarperBusiness, 2019). He draws on his wide variety of experiences to help clients design a more conscious life and make needed changes to their careers to improve their performance and satisfaction. Previously he was a partner with JPMorgan Partners (JPMP), the private equity arm of JP Morgan Chase. He joined JPMP from Flatiron Partners, which he launched in 1996 with partner, Fred Wilson. Flatiron became one of the most successful, early-stage investment programs in the New York City area. He lives on a farm in Longmont, Colorado.

NC State's Wilson College of Textiles is one of the most prestigious colleges of its kind in the world — and the only one of its kind still operating in the Western Hemisphere. Much of that success comes from connecting thoughtful donors with funds that reflect their passions while also supporting college priorities. A transformative $28 million gift from the Fred Wilson family in 2018 was especially impactful, leading to NC State's second named college. “Family” is a recurring theme in the Wilson College of Textiles, whether it's gratitude toward the Wilsons or the sense of belonging that students and alumni all share. To join the Wilson College of Textiles is to experience “Wilson for Life,” and thanks to private support, the college is sure to be powering and promoting the world of textiles far into the future. Fred Wilson's artistic output includes painting, sculpture, photography, and collage, among other media. But his 1992 work “Mining the Museum” at the Maryland Historical Society used the museum's own collection as its material, radically reframing how American institutions present their art. Wilson went on to represent the United States at the 2003 Venice Biennale. For that exhibition, Wilson commissioned a black glass chandelier from the famed Venice glassmakers on the island of Murano. Wilson titled the piece “Speak of me as I am,” after the line from Shakespeare's tragic Venetian, Othello. In the years since then, Wilson has made several other pieces that engage with Othello, many of them made from the same evocative black Murano glass. In a new installation piece commissioned by the Folger, Wilson brings together two sides of his artistic practice: institutional critique and glass sculpture. It's titled “God me such uses send, Not to pick bad from bad, but by bad mend”—another line from Othello, this one spoken by Desdemona. The installation includes a massive black-glass mirror, ornately etched and filigreed. Visitors see themselves reflected in the mirror, along with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth that hangs opposite the mirror in the gallery. On another wall hangs an engraving of the actor Ira Aldridge in the role of Othello, alongside lines from the play written out in Aldridge's own hand. The piece brings together questions of identity, belonging, erasure, and representation—and lets those facets reflect and refract one another, without easy answers. On this episode, Wilson discusses the piece with host Barbara Bogaev. Fred Wilson's installation, “God me such uses send, Not to pick bad from bad, but by bad mend,” will welcome visitors to the Shakespeare Exhibition Hall when the Folger reopens on June 21.

In the wake of IM Jeremy Silman's recent passing, Chess Books Recaptured returns to review one of his classic books, The Amateur's Mind. The Amateur's Mind sold over 90,000 copies, and IM Jeremy Silman said that he thought it was his best instructional book. What made this book, and Silman's writing so unique? We dive into that topic, share many memorable (and amusing) quotes from the book, and briefly discuss some of the other works from IM Jeremy Silman's illustrious canon. Joining me for this discussion, is David Hamm. As a 1000 (ish) rated, relatively recent chess devotee, who is also an attorney with 3 kids, David is just the type of reader that Silman likely had in mind when writing this book. While The Amateur's Mind might not be my #1 recommendation if your goal is to improve your game, it was a ton of fun to read it and to discuss it, and reflecting on IM Jeremy Silman's legacy has left me more impressed with his work than ever. On the flip side, Jerry reflects on the unnerving aspect of being known by strangers due to his work. He believes that better humans make better leaders and expresses a responsibility for leaders to contribute to making the world a better place. Though he is also concerned about the divisive state of society and urges business leaders to engage in dialogue to address the issues tearing communities apart. Jerry Colanna on Suffering and how to cope & make a difference Christopher and Jerry then explore the challenges of coping with widespread suffering and violence. Jerrry draws insights from Buddhist teachings, emphasizing the need for empathy and compassion. He discusses the choices people face in response to suffering and highlights the Buddhist perspective on addressing and transcending it. Jerry also introduces the concept of the tragic gap, urging individuals to stand between the present reality and a better future. Christopher shares his view of embracing change as the only sensible choice, rejecting defeatism. The conversation concludes with a quote from Captain Paul Watson, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the present to shape a better future. Artist and curator Tony Albert collects Aboriginalia, colonial kitsch still found in Australia's second-hand and souvenir shops, to reconstruct historic racial stereotypes and reclaim contemporary Indigenous experiences. From ‘Picanniny Floor Polish' to ‘Bally Boomerang Pinball Machines', Sydney-based artist and collector Tony Albert has long been fascinated by Australiana, tourist objects which attempt to define, and commodify, Aboriginal and Torres Strati Islander peoples. Transforming them into grand sculptural installations, his works are political interventions with these vintage objects, and reappropriations of their use and meaning - which refuse to shy away from the shameful status they now hold. One such installation lends its name to Story, Place, a group exhibition in London, which brings together contemporary Indigenous artists from Australia and the diaspora. Tony talks about the plurality of Indigenous identities and lands across Australia, comparing the country's diversity to that of the European continent, and using ‘dreamtimes' to dispel the creation myth of Captain James Cook's Botany Bay landing in 1770. From his working-class upbringing in North Queensland, to working in cities like Brisbane with the likes of Richard Bell and Vernon Ah Kee, he unpacks the importance of collaboration and collective practice. As a member of the Kuku Yalanji peoples, Tony shares his perspectives working within museums and institutions ‘made by white people, for white people' - and why these particular works must travel to Europe and America, to highlight shared colonial histories, and what Aboriginality means today. Sullivan+Strumpf: Story, Place runs at Frieze No.9 Cork Street in London until 21 October, as part of Frieze London 2023. TODAY'S GUEST   Jerry Colonna is the CEO and co-founder of Reboot.io, an executive coaching and leadership development firm whose coaches and facilitators are committed to the notion that better humans make better leaders.   For nearly 20 years, he has used the knowledge gained as an investor, an executive, and a board member for more than 100 organizations to help entrepreneurs and others to lead with humanity, resilience, and equanimity. He's been called the CEO Whisperer and the Coach with the Spider Tattoo, and has taken refuge in the Buddhist dharma tradition.   Previous to his career as a coach, he was a partner with JPMorgan Partners (JPMP), the private equity arm of JP Morgan Chase. And before that, had launched Flatiron Partners with partner, Fred Wilson. Flatiron became one of the most successful, early-stage investment programs in the New York City area.   Today, he lives in Boulder, Colorado.   EPISODE SUMMARY   In this conversation we talk about: COVID, and how it exposed the interdependence, but also the inequality of American society. Leadership in the context of the Ukraine war, and how when leaders don't address their vulnerable and wounded parts, that expresses itself in violence. We discuss that in the context of malignant narcissism with Putin, and also with Trump. His childhood, and how he became keenly aware of how people around him are feeling. His career in venture, and how he veered from that into coaching. My therapy session, where he points his radical inquiry, his coach mind, at me. My tendency to hide, to not want to be very active on social media, at least not publicly on Twitter. My fear of being judged, and my fears of not being seen or appreciated. What it means to bring your whole self to every challenge in your life, at work, and at any other moment. How everything is an opportunity for self growth, and to practice that. His reboot system and method, and his book. How everybody in life is basically looking for love, safety, and belonging.   We had this conversation in mid-March 2022, and that was two years into the worldwide outbreak of COVID, and a couple of weeks into Russia's invasion of Ukraine. I was excited and nervous to talk to Jerry, who's famous for making podcasters cry. We also had a brief chat months before preparing for this interview and I already had a taste of his radical inquiry approach to coaching.   So as expected, this did not end up being a regular interview. While we got to explore his history and his ideas and his childhood a little bit, Jerry turned his radical inquiry on me as expected. And you'll get to hear a pretty detailed coaching/therapy session on this podcast and dive deeper into my fears and insecurities along the way. I have to say, I found it deeply therapeutic, both at the time, and now weeks later when I relisten. This was a very different, very meaningful process for me, and I hope that you'll find it beneficial as well. It definitely affected the way that I approach putting myself out there and allow myself to be more visible on social media.   Shortly after this interview was recorded, I definitely did start being more vocal and an amazing thing happened. As I started being more vocal on Twitter and other platforms, we got more and more downloads for this podcast and the podcast started growing very, very rapidly. And so I owe a big thank you to Jerry for challenging my assumptions and helping me pinpoint these insecurities. Jerry assured me that this is helpful to other people to hear. So I really hope that will prove true, and that you'll find this episode really helpful to you in your journey as well.   This conversation with Jerry is one of a dozen or so weekly conversations we already have lined up for you with thinkers, designers, makers, authors, philosophers, entrepreneurs, and investors who are working to change our world for the better. So follow this podcast on your favorite podcast app, or head over to remakepod.org to subscribe.   And now let's jump right in with Jerry Colonna.   TIMESTAMP CHAPTERS   [6:58] Life During Covid [13:23] The War in Ukraine [20:51] Early Childhood Empathy [24:25] A Journey to the Venture World [32:54] A Therapy Session [52:17] Business as a Tool for Growth [57:44] Bringing Your Whole Self [1:00:20] The Reboot Approach [1:05:01] A Short Sermon   EPISODE LINKS Jerry's Links

"When we surface subroutines when we surface belief systems, we unleash a certain kind of potential, a certain kind of energy that enables us to do the one thing that a leader must do every day. For nearly 20 years, he has used the knowledge gained as an investor, an executive, and a board member for more than 100 organizations to help entrepreneurs and others lead with humanity, resilience, and equanimity. He is also the author of Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up, which is also the touchstone for our conversation.  There is something about Jerry. In 2017, WIRED published a piece on Jerry wherein this was written titled “This Man Makes Founders Cry.” I don't know if it's how he talks or looks at you, but when talking with him, I felt some sort of sympathetic energy field; it was like a psychic hand on the shoulder. When we spoke, I was dealing with a monster of a cold, coupled with Jerry's superpower, turned this conversation into a coaching session of sorts. Jerry talks about leadership and crucible moments, moments that can be transformative, leading to a new or altered sense of identity. These moments often put our character to the test.  If you are in any state of upheaval or change or know someone who is, please listen. Jerry Colonna is a sought after coach, author, CEO and cofounder of Reboot.io, an executive coaching and leadership development firm dedicated to the notion that better humans make better leaders. More importantly, he is a wise elder in a world where we need them more than ever. His earlier book Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up stayed on my nightstand long after I read it as a reference for how to stay more human. It is a must read for anyone intending on being an adult. In this week's episode we explore the power of presence and the opportunities for deeper connection and healing with one another. We talk about the sacred power of “witchy women”, the places our stories and beliefs keep us stuck and then he turns the tables on me for some 1:1 coaching. Our conversation wanders and weaves from Jerry's hailed success as a venture capitalist to his own experience of depression and suicidality.  From the hard won wisdom he culled from decades in both therapy and on the meditation cushion, to the role Buddhism has played in his life.  We discuss teachers who have sustained him like friend Parker Palmer and Pema Chodron and the programs he now teaches that combine practical skills, radical inquiry, mindfulness and conscious leadership. Prior to his career as a coach, Jerry was a partner with J.P. Morgan Partners (JPMP), the private equity arm of J.P. Morgan Chase. Prior to that, he co founded New York City-based Flatiron Partners with Fred Wilson, which became one of the nation's most successful early-stage investment programs. Reboot offers executive coaching and programs that combine practical skills, radical inquiry, mindfulness and conscious leadership. His latest book Reunion: Leadership and the Journey to Belonging is coming out soon. Here are some things you'll discover in this episode: Why kindness may just make all the difference. The power of your presence. How we can be more conscious adults and global citizens working for a common good.Questions to guide radical self inquiry.  and so much more… Enjoy!  Connect with Jerry Colonna here: Website:: https://www.reboot.io/Instagram:: https://www.instagram.com/jerry.colonna/Linked In:: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jerry-colonna-reboot/ Quick note, I just want to say thank you for listening to this episode. As long time listeners know, I've taken a few weeks off from the podcast to go climb mountains on my bike. The bike phase is over, and it ended with a crescendo when I spent my 57th birthday climbing Stelvio. So far I've gone from San Diego to Toronto, to New York, to Italy, to Germany and I'm now in Tel Aviv – nearing the end of the third week of five weeks on the road. To fill the gap, I'm doing reruns of some of my favorite Panic with Friends episodes. This one with my pal Jason Hirschorn is from March of 2021.  Best of Panic: I was excited about having Jason Hirschhorn on the ‘Panic' podcast and he did not disappoint. This interview turned into a two part series so lean back for this first part which covers Jason's long history at MTV, Slingbox, News Corp and MySpace. Jason has some great stories that were fun for me to listen to because I have met a lot of the same people in my short media stint at CBS. I have not met another person who is so passionate about movies, music and streaming.= In the second interview (rerunning next week), Jason covers the future of new media and streaming and the explosion of the creator economy. Looking back, I believe that YouTube created the first explosion in the creator economy and today it is a bunch of new media platforms combined with decentralization and tokens that will create an even bigger explosion which Jason predicts will be a ‘more equitable' version of the creator economy.  Guest - Jason Hirschhorn, CEO and Chief Curator at REDEF  howardlindzon.com, redef.com  Twitter: @howardlindzon, @JasonHirschhorn, @MediaREDEF, @MusicREDEF, @PanicwFriends, @knutjensen  linkedin.com/in/jason-hirschhorn-820a9b43  #fintech #invest #investment #venturecapital #stockmarket #finance  Show Notes: Introduction (00:41) Welcome Jason (02:48) LA quarantine scene (03:28) MTV and MySpace (04:24) Blake at Slingbox (05:11) Tony Bennett doing Rock Band? (07:02) Running into Fred Wilson (11:20) Jason's first company (16:43) Working with Barry Diller (20:02) MySpace decision (24:08) “Innovation through litigation!” (30:25) Getting engaged (31:27) Exporting American culture (38:40) Traveling to Israel (40:45) Comparing NY to LA (42:24) Meeting Steve Jobs (46:31) Jet-setting with Bono (47:53) Closing thoughts (56:05)
