Scriptures: Nehemiah 1: 1-11 Main point: All throughout scripture people experienced "disruptions". What happens when we experience disruptions that have the ability to keep us down and out? As Christians, how we choose to respond to the disruption can either keep it a burden or turn it into a blessing.
The Presbyterian Church of Upper Montclair Sunday, January 23, 2022 Sermon: "We Interrupt This Program for a Special Announcement!" Scriptures: Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10, Luke 4:14-21 Millie Tourtelot, elder & Princeton Theological Seminary graduate, preaching
Even after all the work is done on the temple, there is still lingering corruption and challenges. Nehemiah stays vigilant and calls God's people to remain faithful to the work of building and maintaining God's house. As we accomplish God-sized visions, there will be ongoing work to do. At Victory, we learn from each opportunity we take, and we continue to go back to our mission and values to stay focused on the work. If you have fallen away from worship, serving, or groups, now is a great time to refocus and reconnect at Victory as we all work to help people find their victory in Christ. Scriptures: Nehemiah 13
As the work continues, Nehemiah finds out that God's people have been corrupted from the inside. They are neglecting the poor and charging unnecessary interest. Nehemiah knows they can't go forward with God's plans on the Temple walls if God's people are unwilling to examine and repair the “temples” of their own lives. Vision, hard work, and perseverance are necessary in doing the work to build God's kingdom. But they're not the only parts of the project. Each one of us at Victory has the opportunity to reflect on and repent of our sins to help move the mission forward and reach people with the Gospel. Inward repentance and renewal must precede outward projects and goals. Scriptures: Nehemiah 5
Nothing is quite as easy as it seems. Once Sanballat and Tobiah hear about Nehemiah's efforts to rebuild the temple, they do everything they can to sabotage God's work. But Nehemiah is undeterred. He expected opposition and struggle. So, he makes a plan to trust in God and prepare for conflict while continuing the work. Any time we have a God-sized vision like the one we have at Victory, we should expect conflict. From technology difficulties to the busyness of life to the post-Christian culture we live in, we know we'll face opposition that will make it a challenge to work at our mission. But the work can't stop when it gets difficult. With God's guidance, the Victory Community will move forward with the work, no matter what. Scriptures: Nehemiah 4
God's people are moved by the vision Nehemiah shares to rebuild the temple. But they don't stop there. Under Nehemiah's leadership, they decide to unite and get to work on the temple for the glory of God. It's a blessing to dream and talk about the future here at Victory. We need to start any work we do with prayer and planning. But then, after we have a clear vision and plan, we need to get to work. Each of us can play a role in the mission at Victory through serving and participating in groups, which helps us grow closer to God and one another. Scriptures: Nehemiah 2:17-18, Nehemiah 3
Nehemiah hears and sees the problem: the walls around the Temple are still broken down. The house of God is vulnerable to attack and dishonor. He fervently prays a prayer of repentance on behalf of himself and the people. He then meets with the leaders and clearly proclaims a vision of a better future for God's people… with God's help. At Victory, we pray for God's guidance in reaching today's people with Christ's victory. We ask Him to help us recognize the opportunities He places in front of us through community involvement and a hybrid ministry model. By first grasping the problem, viewing the solution, and planning to seize the opportunity, all of us in the Victory community will be blessed to do the work that leads to a God-sized vision. Scriptures: Nehemiah 1-2

For the first time in history, we as humanity, and we as Christians are living in uncertain times! Well, that's not entirely true. In fact, that's not true at all. People in general, and the people of God, have been living in uncertain times almost since time began. Regardless of the circumstances of the current era, life can be, and likely will be "messy". So, how do we respond, and how does the Christian continue to follow God when it seems like all around you is chaos.Join our guest speaker, Rev. Evan Arkell as he relates the story of Nehemiah, and the "mess" that he and his fellow Israelites were facing, while still managing to follow God, and how we can directly apply the actions of Nehemiah to our current "messy" lives. A song, story, and scriptures about abiding in God's cloud. Song: Soul Will Sing, Travis Greene Our Bible lesson today is about an event that is far more amazing than anything you can imagine. In fact, it may the most spectacular event in the entire Bible. It is the story of how God sent Moses and his brother, Aaron, to tell Pharaoh to set his people free. This story is adapted from www.sermons4kids.com. Scriptures Nehemiah 9:17-20 NRSV - “they refused to obey, and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them; but they stiffened their necks and determined to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and you did not forsake them. Even when they had cast an image of a calf for themselves and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,' and had committed great blasphemies, you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness; the pillar of cloud that led them in the way did not leave them by day, nor the pillar of fire by night that gave them light on the way by which they should go. You gave your good spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and gave them water for their thirst.” Exodus 13:21-22 NKJV - “And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.” Exodus 33:8-11 NRSV - “Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise and stand, each of them, at the entrance of their tents and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise and bow down, all of them, at the entrance of their tent. Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then he would return to the camp; but his young assistant, Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the tent.” 1 Kings 18:41-46 NRSV - “Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of rushing rain.” So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; there he bowed himself down upon the earth and put his face between his knees. He said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” He went up and looked, and said, “There is nothing.” Then he said, “Go again seven times.” At the seventh time he said, “Look, a little cloud no bigger than a person's hand is rising out of the sea.” Then he said, “Go say to Ahab, ‘Harness your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.' ” In a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind; there was a heavy rain. Ahab rode off and went to Jezreel. But the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; he girded up his loins and ran in front of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.” Follow: @MannysVillage (Instagram) Give: www.mannysvillage.org/donations Listen: bit.ly/MightyMannyPlaylist --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mightymanny/message
