TW: Cults, Domestic Abuse, Gangs, Gun Violence Abbie & Daniélle were VERY excited to sit down with Podcast Nation's Facebook group founder, Brian Harris, as we both have found many valuable connections in this space! During the conversation, Brian is candid about his traumas from youth to adulthood, and how he has since found the benefits of self-reflection and constant learning. Brian is an inspiring individual who uses his life lessons for good today - not only as a religious cult & gang survivor living now with a disability, but also a partner, father, and community member. We cover so many topics in our discussion, such as his hobbies in music and horror popculture, his past and current work as an author and co-publisher of the magazine Wengs Chop, and of course navigating the endless online trolls. 100-milers and IRONMANs are VERY different. In terms of training, mindset, and distance - these races are nowhere alike. So what would it look like to be an athlete for both? Well, Lucy Bartholomew is. Looking at the 2023 season, it seems like Lucy may race both Kona in October, and UTMB in September. Lucy is an Australian Ultra Trailrunner - Haley and Alyssa welcome her onto the podcast to talk about her recent foray into triathlon and how she manages both this and ultra trail running. Lucy shares the roadblocks she's faced along her athletic journey, including cancer surgery and coming back from a concussion she sustained while racing the Western States 100. Beginning triathlon with very little prior knowledge, Lucy discusses how she learned along the way, and the support she got from fellow triathletes. Finally, Alyssa and Lucy compare notes on which race is harder. Episode 7
“You only grow by coming to the end of something and by beginning something else.” ― John Irving, The World According to Garp It's time to say goodbye! Only to The Yellow Studio 2.0. It's officially over. Done. Next week I'll be getting The Yellow Studio 3.0 set up. Version 3.0 will be a transition studio that I hope will take me through the end of 2023. After that, I'm planning to settle into The Yellow Studio 4.0. Around 1999 The Yellow Studio 1.0 was born, dubbed with that name because I wanted the walls painted this yellow color. Bright. Sunshiney. Cheerful. That was the goal. And it worked. Especially after I invested in four Ballard Street prints. They worked well with a yellow background. Truth is, everything worked well with the yellow walls as a background. Over more than 2 decades every "podcast" episode - save those done from the field - was produced right here from inside this yellow room. Except for the first audio files that I uploaded to the Internet, 100% of my podcasts have emanated from The Yellow Studio. A few friends have inquired, "Are you gonna miss it?" No, not really. I'm sentimental so I'm leaving with fond memories. The countless hours spent - especially in the nighttime hours when sleep evades me - listening to music, writing, reading, researching, studying, recording, coaching, conversing with friends (in person or online)...an awful lot of life has happened in this room. I'm thankful for all of it, but it's time to turn the page and start creating a new chapter. Time for a new beginning. That excites me. Version 3.0 will not be yellow, but The Yellow Studio has grown to represent more than a color. It's optimism. Positive vides. Wisdom. Insights. Experiences. It's figuring things out. Learning from mistakes. Always improving! Those things matter more than the color of the walls. But I do love the color. And I will miss that a lot. What I won't miss is this moving business. Talk about a whipping! I enjoyed the hard work of purging, but boxing up 45 years of your life together - even post purge - is a ridiculous amount of work. Rhonda has been diligently packing the most tedious items like china, glassware and lots of breakable stuff. Additionally, she's had to box up her sewing room, which has been daunting because of the sheer volume of things she needs to keep. Thankfully, during the transition she'll continue to have some needed space for her craft. Just today I told her, "I'm sure glad podcasting isn't as space intensive as your passion." ;) I don't plan on skipping more than a beat or two during this move so be patient. I'll try to get back in the groove was soon as I can. The old "broadcast table" of Version 1.0 and 2.0 is gone! The old Heil Audio boom arms, which have served me so well for 20 years, gone! They've been creaky for awhile now so it's past time to retire them. The original Toshiba 43" flat panel TV hanging in the studio stayed in the studio, proudly owned by new masters. The original Rode Rodecaster Pro that YOU helped me get...not quite gone, but it will be soon. It's pristine and I'll be selling it to help defray the investment I've already made into the newer Rode Rodecaster Pro 2. Boxed up, but not going away - except for the rest of 2023 - are the Ballard Street prints, the ladies that welcomed folks inside The Yellow Studio, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum - and the dragons and other figurines that populated the studio. These things are going to be safely stowed away in the location of The Yellow Studio 4.0. They'll just remain boxed, safely stored in the comfortable warmth of bubblewrap. ;) The new studio will have a brand new 62" long desk, on casters. That'll be a first and I'm looking forward to the prospect of moving the studio around as I want. Maybe I won't move it around much at all. But it's nice knowing I can. The new studio will have a brand new chair. I sold my Herman Miller Mirra chair because the armrests are aw...

Episode 357: Construct a Résumé of Failures to Discover Something New Episode Notes I like going below the surface to understand what makes people who they are. I love all the stuff. The successes, the failures, how people overcome challenges and setbacks, what brings people joy, and all the transformative moments that shape our character and entrepreneurial lives. I love being part of people's evolutionary process and connecting them with people and resources. An unexpected package arrived on my doorstep during last week's epic snowstorm. It looked like someone covered our neighborhoods with soft-serve ice cream and swirls atop the snow drifts—remnants of severe winds. The storm hit the Midwest. A whopping 11.3” of snow fell in Golden Valley, leaving us a winter wonderland view. Inside the bubble-wrapped package were a note (You're in the book!) and a signed early copy of Joanne Lipman's book, Next! The Power of Reinvention in Life and Work. Oh, how I love books. The smell. The purple book cover, yellow-colored hardcover, and binding. The chapter headings, content, and print. Everything. My mind went to the beginning of 2021. I received a call from a pioneering journalist and author. Joanne Lipman was the voice on the other end of the phone line. I didn't know of her at the time. She listened to my 2018 podcast conversations with Art Fry, the inventor of Post-It Notes. Joanne said she was writing a book about the power of reinvention in life and work and wanted to interview Art. She asked if I could connect the two of them. Next! The Power of Reinvention in Life and Work provides a toolkit to make meaningful transitions in life. It is chuck full of case studies, personal interviews, and the latest research on how people reinvent their lives and how they work. Joanne is a brilliant storyteller and avid researcher. I quickly opened to the Acknowledgement section on p. 282, where I am mentioned. “To podcaster Nancy Meyer for putting me in touch with Art Fry.” Wow! Tears snuck into my eyes. Joanne took the time to acknowledge me in print. Then, I flipped to chapter 3, Eureka!, where Art Fry's story unfolds. Joanne described both the journey of Spencer Silver, who invented the 3M glue he couldn't find a use for, and Art, the intrapreneur at 3M, who came up with the Post-it notes idea while singing in his church choir. Art used Spencer's glue to improve our lives. I use Post-it notes almost every day! The ‘aha' moment for both of them was years in the making, and Joanne outlines Art and Spencer's journey beautifully and accurately in her book. Back to the beginning of the book, I immersed myself in reading every word. Her book is divided into two parts; the disparate ways in which we pivot and navigate change when we have no choice. After hundreds of personal interviews and academic research papers, Joanne observed a specific pattern when people pivoted in their lives and careers. This particular pattern, she suggests, could be a Reinvention Map. Although the pattern seems straightforward on the surface, like Joseph Campbell's hero's journey, it isn't. There are four aspects to reinvention she tracks through history. We start with a search, then we struggle. An event causes us to stop what we are doing before a solution emerges and a path forward is revealed. She outlines variables as when you are on a post-traumatic growth path after a traumatic experience. The order is reversed. We start our reinvention with the traumatic experience/struggle, search for ways to understand what happened and struggle more before we stop and find a long-term solution. An area of reinventing we would like to avoid if we could is the ‘struggle,' but it is inevitable. It is how we gain new insights. I include an example Joanne highlighted of how to address a struggle. I hope you find it useful. I have done this exercise throughout my life as a therapeutic purge. A way to let go of my failures instead of allowing my failures to take up res...

"Cocaine Bear" is finally here, and we're here for every insane moment of it on Breakfast All Day. Christy and Alonso review the much-anticipated comic thriller -- which, amazingly, is based on a true story -- and insist that if you're going to see it, you should do so with an audience. We also review "We Have a Ghost" on Netflix, a cheesy haunted house story that wastes a great cast. In news, we discuss the Oscars and SAG Awards, "Succession," Steven Yeun and more. And we've got a couple of goodies on our Patreon: a recap of "Poker Face" episode 8, which may be the best one yet, and a February Off the Menu review of the 2006 romantic comedy "Something New." And if you haven't joined our Patreon yet, now's a great time -- we're doing our first Lunch Date live chat with our subscribers on Monday, Feb. 27 at Noon PST. You can find out more here. We'd love to see you!
Ian McMillan celebrates 100 years of BBC Radio Drama with brand new commissions - from writers Alex Riddle, Georgia Affonso. Tim Barrow, and the poet Michael Symmons Roberts. This is a homage to what Ian describes as a form which feels 'as new as cinema and as old as a whispered story in a dark cave in winter', with tales of mysterious islands and time travel, the intimacy of the optometrist's gaze, and the power of friendship. Michael Symmons Roberts's poem is a commission for our 'Something Old, Something New' series, and evokes a frozen Atlantic - its sound and its shiver.

In this week's classic Story Collider episode, both our stories are about the thrill of exploration and discovering something new. Part 1: Ecologist Cylita Guy finds unexpected adventure when she studies bats in the field. Part 2: Maija Niemisto is a director of education on the Clearwater, America's environmental flagship. But when a stranger comes to the side of the ship, it heralds a discovery about her city and herself. Cylita Guy is a PhD candidate and ACM SIGHPC/Intel Computational and Data Science Fellow in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto. Broadly interested in zoonotic diseases and their wildlife reservoirs, Cylita's research focuses on bats and their pathogens. Using both field surveys and computational methods she is investigating why bats seem to be good at carrying viruses that they sometimes share with humans, but rarely get sick from themselves. When not in the field catching bats or at her computer analyzing data, Cylita looks to help others foster their own sense of curiosity and discovery about the natural world. In conjunction with the High Park Nature Centre Cylita has started a Junior Bat Biologist program to engage young, future scientists. She also works as a Host at the Ontario Science Centre, educating the public about diverse scientific topics. Finally, Cylita's hilarious field exploits are featured in a general audience book titled Fieldwork Fail: The Messy Side of Science! In her down time, you can find your friendly neighborhood batgirl chasing her next big outdoor adventure. Cylita's story originally aired on The Story Collider's podcast on November 24, 2017, in an episode titled "The Bats and the Bees: Stories about winged wildlife." Maija was born to a family of musicians in the heartland, far from the sea. Minnesota was her first hailing port. School, university and adventures took her to Finland, Wisconsin and Lebanon. After receiving her B.A. in International Relations and Environmental studies, she followed the smell of sweet salt air and ran away to see the sea aboard her 28-foot sloop. In 2008, the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater appeared on the horizon and she jumped at the chance to combine her interests in music, sailing, teaching, science, water ecology, environmental advocacy and pumping the bilge. Maija's story originally aired on The Story Collider's podcast on January 29, 2012, in an episode titled "A Step Off the Boat." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Barry also talks about his amazing career and being on the drum kit with Gordon Lightfoot for over 40 years. You can read Barry Keane's full bio right here.SHOW NOTESHere is the cover of the Something New album. It was taken during the recording of one of the Ed Sullivan episodes The Beatles performed on. We also talk about the "hype copy" on the back of the album. Classic 1960s North American stuff. We also talk about Dave Dexter Jr., the 1960s Capitol Records, North America, executive who was primarily responsible for the "Frankenstein-ing" of The Beatles UK catalogue for US release. You can read more about that here. There is also a fascinating discussion on the well respected Steve Hoffman Music Forum about whether Dexter deserves credit or derision for his work on those North American Beatles records.Barry has played on many big hits during his drumming career. He mentions Canadian singer/songwriter Ian Thomas and his 1973 hit Painted Ladies. The record charted in both Canada and the US. Here is the song, with Barry on the skins....

New. The feeling of the New New.This episode is for all of those who have ever felt new at church, youth group, student ministry...This may be you right now, or when you were a teenager, but this episode is especially for those who have NOT been new in a LOOOONNNGGG time. There is a whole set of feelings, experiences, and unguided expectations when you are walking up new to a church building, a small group circle, or a youth ministry activity. If we want to connect with new folks, we need to take a walk in their shoes.Zac and Chad talk also about why youth ministry leaders need to see it from the other side. Often times we are asking students to invite new friends, or we are hoping to connect with new families but we are unsure of how all that new really feels. So when was the last time you were new?Looking for a resource that is NEW and designed to help you connect with NEW students? Hugh Montgomery is a someone who, if he wasn't so darned lovely, you'd probably have to envy quite a lot. He's a practicing clinician, a UK lead on climate change, he's written screen-plays, runs ultramarathons, learns a new skill a year, holds a world-record, and is now releasing his first full-novel.It's called 'Control' - a thriller set in the medical-world (write what you know) all about a bullying, over-bearing Doctor, and the way he treats colleagues, which comes back to haunt him. We talk about brooding over the idea for the story, escaping to France to write it, and where he thinks the story actually came from.As he manages to fit in so much into his day, we talk about where he finds the time and why he rations sleep. Also, we talk about why he learns a new skill every year, and how he believes it to be crucial to make time stop flying by.Also - you can hear a distinguished routine from history with Mason Currey, and grab his new book 'Daily Rituals: Women at Work' here - https://masoncurrey.com/If you can, please do support the show! - patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. 114: Leaders think outside the box and decide on something new. That's exactly what special guest Liz Hatcher, CEO of Women to Women Network did. Often people get stuck in a business and never take a chance to do something new. To do something outside their comfort zone and something that feels like a calling, a mission. My guest, Liz Hatcher, had a successful business and then decided a change was needed. It's never too late or too early to follow your gut and become the leader you know you are inside. Founder and CEO of Women to Women Network Liz Hatcher often describes herself as an accidental leader. She fell into leadership and then embraced it when she realized how she could help others rise and step into their own potential, which is a big part of the backstory behind her rapidly growing organization. Liz is an entrepreneur and creative at heart with a diverse background in marketing, association management, and event production across multiple industries and business settings, from small boutique firms to international corporations. Before launching the Women to Women Network, Liz was running her own marketing business providing copywriting, content strategy, and branding services to a wide range of clients. She believes there is opportunity everywhere you look and in everything you do and says that “it just takes a little creative thinking.” This is something she excels at. She gets a thrill from discovering opportunities that help others move forward and enjoys finding new ways to take full advantage of the resources around us. Earlier this week, we shared part one of this conversation, all about how to leap into something new. And since then, I've been really thinking about the crazy ideas and dreams that I (too) have put on the back burner for way, way too long. Like writing a book, delivering a TED talk, and getting back to painting large-scale canvases for fun. Why do we stall on the things that matter most to us? Matthew really dives deep into this and how to get unstuck. Now, if you haven't heard part one, go back and listen to that one first. But if you're ready to continue on, let's pick back up here with my conversation with author Matthew Dicks as he simplifies how to leap into something new. It's time to simplify… Here's how. My special guest today is Matthew Dicks and he's simplifying how to leap into something new. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: Why the word “someday” is his least favorite word in the English language and how you can replace it in your vocabulary Instead of asking your 8 year old Inner Child for advice, why you need to ask the 100 year old version of yourself instead - you might be surprised by what you hear! He spends nearly the entire first half of his latest book “Someday is Today” on the concept of time - why that is and how to radically adjust your viewpoint on time in order to take the leap into something new What the importance is of saying “yes” - especially now, when unexpected opportunities come along - and why that helps boost your radiance What the “Spotlight Effect” is and why that might be a roadblock keeping you from trying something new …and ultimately, if it's fear that keeping you from making decisions that propel your creative life forward, how to navigate this as you set your horizon point for where you actually want to be next. You can do it, I believe in you… it's time to simplify! Q: Are you ready to leap into something new in life? If yes, this one is for you. Are you looking to leap into something new soon? Maybe you've been thinking about writing a book, starting a new relationship or making a big career leap… but something has been stopping you from doing the thing, for like, way too long? What is it and how do we overcome that hesitation? My special guest today is author and storyteller Matthew Dicks and he's simplifying how to leap into something new. As Matthew puts it… “Are you good at dreaming about what you're going to accomplish ‘someday' but not good at finding the time and getting started? How will you actually make that decision and do it?” Well, he's here to share proven, practical, and simple ways to turn the random minutes throughout your day into (as he calls it) pockets of productivity, and your dreams into accomplishments. Here's how. What I do to ‘check myself' when I have a shiny new idea If I had a dollar for every time I had a new idea for my business, I'd be a very rich woman. And I'll be honest, one of the most fun (and rewarding) parts of being an entrepreneur is the opportunity to experiment and try new things. But one of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years is that you shouldn't always go full steam ahead on adding new offers to your business -- whether it be a course, a workshop, Live or Virtual event, or something else. It's smart to err on the side of caution, and really evaluate whether it's going to be something that adds value to your audience, and increases your bottom line. And here's why: If you spin the wheels trying to make every idea that you have happen, you're going to lose focus on something that might already be working really well. Now, there are certainly times when you should add something new to your business. I've done this many times. But every time I have a shiny new idea that I just can't stop thinking about, I force myself to take a pause, and run through my simple, 4-step ‘checklist' to make sure that it's really something that is going to benefit my business. And guess what? I'm sharing that exact 4-step checklist with you in this episode, so you can use it whenever you find yourself in a similar situation. So grab your notebook and be sure to take notes, because what you're about to hear could save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
