Do you know what almost no one tells you when you are creating a parenting plan? Some of the biggest co-parenting battles after divorce will not be over the things you think. It may not be the major custody decision or where the children will primarily live. It may be the late pickup, the unanswered text, the forgotten backpack, or the soccer registration deadline no one thought to clarify. That is why Susan Guthrie is joined by Gabrielle Hartley, attorney, mediator, parenting conflict expert, TEDx speaker, bestselling author of Better Apart: The Radically Positive Way to Separate, and creator of Mediator Gabby. Gabrielle has spent decades helping families navigate separation with greater clarity, less conflict, and better outcomes for children. Together, they get practical about why so many parenting plans break down after the divorce is finalized and what it actually takes to build one that holds up in real life. This conversation is for anyone creating a parenting plan, already co-parenting, or supporting someone who is. Because choosing what feels easier right now has a way of creating a much more difficult problem to solve later. Covered in this episode: Why most co-parenting conflict has nothing to do with bad parenting What makes a parenting plan fall apart once real life takes over How the "easier now, harder later" trap quietly sets families up for more conflict Why clarity matters more than detail when building a durable parenting plan How Mediator Gabby helps parents arrive prepared, stay focused, and reach better agreements WHAT IF AN AI MEDIATOR COULD HELP YOU BUILD A PARENTING PLAN BEFORE YOU EVER WALK INTO A ROOM?  There are approximately 29-million children living in single-parent families in the United States, and the vast majority of their parents never have access to a lawyer, a mediator, or any professional guidance at all. Mediator Gabby, Gabrielle's AI-supported parenting plan tool was built with those families in mind.  Using this custom AI tool, each parent completes a guided onboarding on their own before any joint conversation begins, working through the full landscape of a parenting plan so that by the time they sit down together, they already know where they agree, where they do not, and what needs to be worked through. Here is what that preparation can do for families: Save three to five hours of introductory conversation before mediation even begins Help parents arrive focused and prepared rather than reactive and overwhelmed Surface the details most people do not think to address until they become conflict points Lower the emotional temperature in the room so real resolution can happen faster Keep the process moving forward instead of stalling on issues that feel impossible in the moment A parenting plan is the operating system for your family's next chapter. The clearer and more intentional it is from the start, the less conflict it creates down the road, and the better the experience for your children. Dirk Daenen, the man who brought TEDx to Luxembourg, reveals the science and the secrets behind becoming a truly confident speaker. You'd think the man who coaches Luxembourg's most compelling public speakers would have been born fearless on stage. You'd be wrong. Professor Dirk Daenen, communication expert, TEDx Luxembourg organiser, and the person quietly responsible for some of the most-watched talks ever delivered on Luxembourgish soil started out as an introvert dreading the spotlight. In this candid conversation on The Lisa Burke Show, he opens up about fear, failure, the science of self-confidence, and why one talk filmed in front of 75 people in Wiltz went on to rack up 13 million views. If you have ever frozen in front of a room, gone blank at a podium, or quietly vowed to avoid public speaking for the rest of your life, this one is for you. TED vs TEDx: What's the Difference? Most people have heard of TED Talks. Far fewer know what the differential for TEDx is, or how accessible it really is. A standard TED conference ticket starts at around $20,000. You'll be sitting next to the world's most powerful minds, but the barrier is enormous. TEDx events, on the other hand, are independently organised under strict licence from TED, run entirely by volunteers, and designed to bring big ideas to local communities. Here in Luxembourg, that licence belongs to Dirk Daenen, and he has been running it for years. "I'm used to being the smartest person in the room as a teacher," Dirk says with a grin. "And then suddenly I'm surrounded by the most impressive people I've ever met: graffiti artists, photographers, scientists, a Belgian pop star. No money could pay for that.” "Luxembourg is a small country. But the ideas we spread are HUGE. Over 20 million views and counting." The Fear Is Real — and It Starts at School Up to 80% of people report some fear of public speaking. The academic figure sits closer to 40%. But according to Dirk, the number is almost beside the point, because wherever you land on that scale, the roots are almost always the same. "We are doing a quantitative survey right now," he explains, "asking people about their childhood experiences. And what we are finding is that most people who identify as having a fear of public speaking can point to a specific moment at school where it all started.” A teacher who snickered or a classroom that laughed at you. A presentation that went badly and was never properly supported. These are not trivial memories. Dirk calls them out for what they are: trauma. "If you do it badly, you end up with people carrying post-traumatic stress disorder because of something that happened in front of a classroom.” It is why his PhD research [yes, he is also completing a doctorate] focuses on finding the most effective way to teach public speaking to 16-year-olds, with the minimum possible trauma and the maximum boost to self-confidence. His dream: one full year of public speaking on the Luxembourg school curriculum. Not optional. A core subject, like French or German. "Europe's biggest social failure?" he asks. "We have an amazing education system. And yet we do not teach the one skill you need in every single job, every single day." The Science of Self-Confidence Dirk is a researcher as much as a coach, and he brings the science of psychology into every conversation about communication. The key framework he returns to is the work of psychologist Albert Bandura, whose four sources of self-efficacy - your belief in your own ability to do something - underpin everything Dirk teaches. The first and most powerful source is mastery: actually doing the thing and surviving it. The second is vicarious experience: watching someone just like you nail it, and thinking: if they can, so can I. The third is social encouragement: the right kind of feedback, delivered with care. And the fourth is physiological readiness: understanding that the butterflies you feel before speaking are not a warning signal. They are energy. "I still get the butterflies. But I have taught them to fly in formation.” Self-confidence, he explains, is not some vague quality you either have or don't. It is the sum of two measurable things: self-esteem (how much you value yourself) and self-efficacy (how capable you believe yourself to be). Public speaking, done well and in a safe environment, is one of the fastest ways to build both. What Actually Works on Stage So what does Dirk actually tell the people he coaches? Here are some of the most practical insights from the conversation. Your body will move whether you plan it or not. When you're nervous, adrenaline floods your system. Oxygenated blood pumps into your muscles. If you don't channel that energy intentionally, your body finds its own outlet: clicking pens, rotating wedding rings, crossing arms, hands shoved in pockets, the classic 'fig leaf.' The fix is not to stand rigid. It's to plan your gestures in advance. Identify your key words and decide how to show them physically. Do this for six months and those movements become automatic. Preparation is not the same as memorisation. One of the most striking stories in this interview involves Emma Bale, the Belgian pop star who had performed for 60,000 people at Dour Festival but was terrified of a TED Talk. She memorised her speech so perfectly it sounded robotic. The humanity disappeared. Dirk had to coach her to re-introduce vulnerability: a planned, spontaneous-sounding moment at the start. 'It takes a lot of preparation to be spontaneous,' he says. Tony Blair knew this. So did every great performer you have ever admired. The top 10 most-viewed TED Talks have no slides. Think about that the next time you spend three hours building a PowerPoint. Structure matters, yes. But the elements almost nobody teaches: voice, body language, audience engagement, are what people actually remember. The information-heavy slide culture in European education has produced presenters who hide behind their decks. Stop hiding. You are the presentation. Watch people who are like you. Bandura called this vicarious experience. You don't need to imitate a world-famous orator. You need to see a normal person, someone at your level, stand up and do it well. That is why TEDx Luxembourg matters. Local people, on a real stage, sharing real ideas. 13 million views from a room in Wiltz. Proof that it is possible. Just do it. There is no way around this one. Toastmasters. Improv classes. The TEDx stage. The school debate club your child has been avoiding. The skill builds only through exposure. 'I was a chef allergic to food,' Dirk says. 'I ate the food anyway. It wasn't poison. It was the best meal of my life.'

Can Americans Really Rely on Social Security? With Chris Orestis

Retirement Revealed

Chris Orestis, founder & president of Retirement Genius, explains how to make more informed Social Security decisions.  Social Security is one of the most important decisions in retirement. And yet, many people approach it the same way they approach a casual conversation—based on opinions, assumptions, and what someone else did. As Chris Orestis put it, people are often making decisions based on “the myths of Social Security, not the math.” That's where things start to go wrong. Because Social Security isn't just another income source. For many retirees, it becomes a foundational piece of their financial security. In fact, Chris pointed out that for a large percentage of retirees, Social Security can represent more than half of their income. When a decision carries that much weight, guessing isn't a strategy. Why Social Security Feels So Confusing Part of the challenge is complexity. Many people aren't clear on the differences between Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Others assume that because they've “paid into the system,” everything will work itself out when they need it. That assumption can be costly. Chris highlighted a broader issue: people often spend more time researching a car purchase than they do understanding the benefits that may fund decades of their retirement. That gap in understanding creates a ripple effect of poor decisions. The Decision That Locks Everything In Unlike many financial decisions, Social Security isn't easily reversible. Once you claim, you are largely locked into that decision. There is a limited “do-over” window early on, but beyond that, your choice determines your monthly benefit for life. That makes timing critical. You can claim as early as 62, but that locks in a lower lifetime benefit. Waiting until full retirement age—or even age 70—can significantly increase your monthly income. So how do you decide? It Starts with Life Expectancy Both Chris and Jeremy emphasized that the most important factor in deciding when to claim Social Security is life expectancy. You're essentially making a bet: Claim early → you're betting you won't live as long Delay benefits → you're betting you will But here's where many people go wrong. They guess. Chris pointed out that people tend to underestimate how long they'll live and overestimate how long their money will last. That combination can lead to decisions that reduce long-term income at exactly the time it's needed most. Instead of guessing, there are tools available—like longevity calculators—that can give you a more realistic estimate based on your situation. Know Your Numbers Before You Decide The second major mistake is not knowing your actual Social Security benefit. Your benefit is based on your earnings history. And the estimates provided assume you continue working until full retirement age. If you plan to retire earlier, those estimates may be overstated. That's why it's essential to go directly to SSA.gov, review your earnings history, and run projections based on your actual plan. Without that step, you're making decisions without accurate data. Coordination Changes Everything The third—and often overlooked—piece is coordination. Social Security doesn't exist in isolation. It interacts with: Other income (which can affect taxation) Earned income (which can reduce benefits before full retirement age) Medicare premiums (which are deducted directly from your benefit) For example, many people hear that “85% of Social Security is taxed” and assume that means an 85% tax rate. In reality, it means up to 85% of the benefit may be taxable, depending on your overall income. That distinction matters. Because the real outcome depends on how Social Security fits into your broader income plan. The Real Goal: Stop Guessing If there's one takeaway from this conversation, it's this: You don't have to guess. There are tools, data, and professionals available to help you make an informed decision. As Chris said, if you go into this blindly when those resources exist, “that's your bad.” In the Retire Today framework, Social Security falls under the MAKE step—creating reliable income. But how you claim it affects everything else: What you SPEND How much you KEEP after taxes How you INVEST your remaining assets What you ultimately LEAVE behind Social Security isn't just a checkbox. It's a decision that shapes your entire retirement. And it's one worth getting right. Don't forget to leave a rating for the “Retire Today” podcast if you've been enjoying these episodes! Keepin' the Tail Waggin': How We Do Pet-Friendly Pest Control in Jasper Well, howdy neighbors! Fred Talley here from Faith Pest Control, right here in our beautiful corner of North Georgia. If you're like me, your four-legged friends aren’t just “animals”—they're family. Whether it's a loyal lab curled up by the fireplace or a curious tabby prowling the porch, the last thing any of us wants is to put them in harm’s way while tryin’ to get rid of uninvited guests like roaches, ants, or those nasty North Georgia spiders. Folks ask me all the time: “Fred, can I really keep my home bug-free without worryin’ about my dog or cat?” The answer is a big, North Georgia YES. But it takes a little bit of “faith” in the right process and a whole lot of common sense. Here's what makes a pest control service truly pet-friendly. It Starts with “IPM” (That's Expert Talk for Common Sense) At Faith Pest Control, we don't just “spray and pray.” We use what's called Integrated Pest Management (IPM). It's a fancy term, but here's what it means for your pets: Targeted Treatment: Instead of soaking your whole baseboard in chemicals, we look for the source. We put the treatment where the bugs live and the pets don’t—like deep in cracks, crevices, and behind appliances. Bait Stations: If we use baits for ants or roaches, we use tamper-resistant stations. These are little “lockboxes” that keep the good guys (your pets) out and the bad guys (the bugs) in. Exclusion First: Sometimes the best pest control isn’t a spray at all; it's a tube of caulk! By sealing up those gaps around your foundation or utility pipes, we keep the bugs out so we don’t have to use as much product inside. The “Dry Rule” One of the most important things to remember is the drying window. Most of the professional products we use today are specifically designed to be safe for pets once they have completely dried. Fred's Pro Tip: I always tell my neighbors to keep their pets in a “safe room” or out for a walk while I'm workin'. Once that product is dry—usually about 30 to 60 minutes depending on the humidity—it's perfectly fine for them to go back to their favorite nap spot. Knowing Your “Exotic” Neighbors Now, I know not everyone just has cats and dogs. We've got folks in Jasper with birds, fish, and even the occasional reptile. These little critters can be more sensitive. Fish Tanks: If we're doin' an indoor treatment, we always ask you to cover the tank with a towel and turn off the air pump for a little bit to keep the water pure. Birds: Their lungs are delicate! If we’re doin’ any kind of heavy-duty work, it's best to move the cage to a part of the house we aren’t touchin’. My Personal “Make You Happy” Guarantee Termite and pest control is serious business. It involves chemicals, and I'll never tell you otherwise. But when you hire someone who treats you like a neighbor—not a number—you get the peace of mind that comes with knowing the job is done right. I'm a Georgia State Certified Pest Control Operator, and I've spent years learnin’ exactly how these products interact with our environment. My promise to you is simple: If you hire me to get rid of your pest problem and you aren't 100% HAPPY within 30 days, I'll come back and retreat for FREE until you are. So, don’t let the bugs run your house, and don’t let “worry” keep you from callin’ the pros. We'll keep the pests out and the tails waggin’. Give us a ring right here in Jasper, and let's bring some peace back to your home! The post Keepin' the Tail Waggin': How We Do Pet-Friendly Pest Control in Jasper first appeared on Faith Pest Control.

A lot of people leaders are exhausted right now. They're holding the line on performance… trying to keep their teams engaged… and making hard calls under pressure. And in the middle of all that, one thing gets pushed to the bottom of the list: Joy. Not the "happy all the time" kind of joy. Not "good vibes only." But joy as an operating system — the thing that stabilizes how you lead, how you respond, and how you treat people when work gets messy. Because when a leader runs on urgency, fear, or control… the team can feel it. And it costs you: trust, creativity, psychological safety, retention… and eventually, results. My special guest today is Sheryl Raphael Whitaker, and she's simplifying how to be a joy-centered people leader. Sheryl is a leadership transformation expert and best-selling author of It Starts with Joy: The Inner Shift that Changes Everything. She helps leaders and teams move from overload and disconnection into clarity, authenticity, and steady leadership — through her JoyShift™ method and the idea that "Joy is your COO." Here's how. My special guest today is Sheryl Raphael Whitaker and she's simplifying how to be a joy-centered people leader.  We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: That when you believe "Joy is an operating system" and "Joy is your COO," what that really means and the real cost to a team when a leader runs on urgency, fear, or control instead. The most common signs a people leader is not joy-centered (even if they're high-performing) versus someone who truly is. How to use the JoyAudit — and a couple of questions a manager can ask themselves to get clarity in under 10 minutes. A step-by-step, simplified walkthrough of the JoyShift Method: Joy Aware, Joy Embraced, Joy Committed, Joy in Motion — and one simple action you can take this week for each step. And if joy is the operating system, how it changes the most important people-leader moments: feedback, conflict, decision-making under pressure, and building trust — with a couple "before vs. after" examples you can picture immediately. Gratitude Week 4 // Gratitude is a Choice Gratitude is a Choice Gratitude is a Disposition Romans 1:20-22 (NIV)“For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.” 2 Corinthians 4:4, 6-11, 16-18 (NIV)“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God… For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body… Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Gratitude Doesn't Depend on Circumstances, but it Determines How We See Circumstances… Psalm 136 (NIV)Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever.Give thanks to the Lord of lords:His love endures forever.to him who alone does great wonders,His love endures forever.who by his understanding made the heavens,His love endures forever.who spread out the earth upon the waters,His love endures forever.who made the great lights—His love endures forever. the sun to govern the day,His love endures forever.the moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever.to him who struck down the firstborn of EgyptHis love endures forever.and brought Israel out from among themHis love endures forever.with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;His love endures forever.to him who divided the Red Sea[a] asunderHis love endures forever.and brought Israel through the midst of it,His love endures forever.but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;His love endures forever.to him who led his people through the wilderness; His love endures forever.to him who struck down great kings,His love endures forever.and killed mighty kings—His love endures forever.Sihon king of the AmoritesHis love endures forever.and Og king of Bashan—His love endures forever.and gave their land as an inheritance,His love endures forever.an inheritance to his servant Israel. His love endures forever. He remembered us in our low estateHis love endures forever.and freed us from our enemies. His love endures forever. He gives food to every creature. His love endures forever.Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever. It Starts as a Practice, that Becomes a Discipline, that Becomes a Lifestyle.

As we head into Labor Day weekend, I'm flexing one of my superpowers: organizing information.   In this episode of The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast, I share the story behind my book binder — a simple but powerful system that helps me keep track of dozens of book recommendations and the 20–30 books I read each year. You'll hear how I went from barely finding time to read as a busy mom to becoming an audiobook enthusiast with a binder full of possibilities.   I'll also share 26 books currently on my “to be read” list (plus the Spy School series I'm enjoying with my son Kraig). Maybe you'll discover your next great read from this podcast episode!   Even if books aren't your thing, you'll walk away with this takeaway: what makes you weird might actually be your superpower. For me, it's organizing information. For you, it could be something else entirely — and when you embrace it, life gets easier, less stressful, and more fun. You just might help other people too!

Okay so the past few weeks I've been talking about blood sugar and how to identify if blood sugar dysregulation is an issue for you. This week, I want to give you the number one strategy for beginning to stabilise your blood sugar. Now, I have talked about this before in the context of other episodes, I've done some lives on the topic and put them out as episodes, and I've linked to articles I've written, but I don't think I have ever done a solo episode on this key strategy, so I decided, so you didn't have to hunt for it, just to do an episode dedicated to this one tool. Now, of course there are other factors here, like how much sugar you're eating between meals, but this strategy is key to building an approach to your daily meals that keeps blood sugar levels stable consistently, and as a result, that tends to reduce cravings and improve symptoms, which can allow you to start taking on bigger changes, like reducing sugary snacks for example.Show notesFibrehttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18287346/https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00394-009-0026-xhttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9811965/ Proteinhttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2386677/https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S104345262200033X Final quarterhttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5336455/Healthy fatshttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16537685/Starchy vs. Non-starchy veghttps://www.healthline.com/nutrition/starchy-vs-non-starchy-vegetables Need more help or want to learn how to work with me?Free resources:This podcast! Endometriosis Net ColumnEndometriosis News ColumnNewsletterInstagramWays to work with me:This EndoLife, It Starts with Breakfast digital cookbookMasterclasses in endo nutrition, surgery prep and recovery and pain reliefLive and Thrive with Endo: The Foundations DIY courseOne to one coaching info and applicationThis episode is sponsored by BeYou Cramp Relief Patches. "It Starts at the Dinner Table," is a self help book to help 11-25 year old's to set goals and plan out their life, so that they can be successful. To often, young people drift along in life and lose too many valuable years wherein they could be productive. We fall into the 40/40/40 rule of life. What happens is our parents encourage us to get a good education in order to get a good paying job. It goes like this. We get serious about life at age 25 and work 40 hours a week for 40 years; and then retire on about 40% of our income from Social Security, and any monies that we have saved from our retirement plans. This book teaches you to get ahead of the curve by showing you how to set attainable goals. Studies show that people that write down their goals reach their goals three times more often than people who don't write down their goals. It Starts at the Dinner Table is knowledge shared by five generations of Haley's. It will help you practice simple habits over time that will help you not only be successful, but discover your destiny to impact the world! For more info on the book click HERE

This one is a super quick episode today, as I didn't want to do another replay, but also I don't have the time at present to continue with our series on pain and nutrients, as those episodes take about a day to research and write up. So, today I want to talk about something that I've been discussing with two clients lately, and it occurred to me, that you might benefit as well. Regulating the nervous system and our stress response can have a profound and positive impact on our endometriosis pain levels and our energy levels (and of course, our stress levels and mental health). I won't go into the science of it here, because I have other episodes on this and this is supposed to be a quick episode, but in short, our cortisol levels and our stress response don't just influence our experience of stress, but our entire sleep-wake cycle and energy levels over the day. They also influence our pain signals and can turn up the volume on pain. REPLAY: Endometriosis and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome - Is There a Connection?

This EndoLife

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2025 13:24

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a group of 13 conditions which all affect connective tissue (collagen) in the body. Most are rare, but one type called hypermobility EDS is common. Because the intestines are made from soft tissue, EDS affects digestion and often causes IBS symptoms. It is a major risk factor for developing SIBO, because it slows down motility. If you have EDS and SIBO, you will be chronic - but you can still live well! And we'll get to that in the bonus lesson with Dr Allison Siebecker. And just to hammer this point home about the connection between EDS and IBS, one study of 228 IBS patients found 48% also had EDS.Now the reason why I want to bring EDS to your attention is because I am seeing it more and more in my clients with both endometriosis and SIBO.Despite these statistics, to my knowledge, most experts do not consider EDS and endometriosis to be significantly connected. At present, it is thought that most of the period pain and menstrual problems of those with EDS is not caused by endometriosis, but EDS itself. However, I have spoken to multiple health care practitioners who do see a connection and see the two conditions together in patients, and because EDS can cause gut problems and SIBO, I think it's worth raising here.  Need more help or want to learn how to work with me?Free resources:This podcast! Do you get full body pain? Does it affect your muscles, nerves or joints? Do you find that you need to rest after walking or find you tired more easily than others? It might not just be endometriosis. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a group of 13 conditions which all affect connective tissue (collagen) in the body. Most are rare, but one type called hypermobility EDS is common - and out of those with this type of EDS, 6-23% have endometriosis. But that's not where the connection ends…32-77% of those with EDS have vulvodynia and or pain with sex.33-75% have heavy menstrual bleeding. 73-93% have painful periods.Additionally, histamine intolerance caused by Mast Cell Activation Syndrome is a co-condition of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and we also know that overactive mast cells play a role in endometriosis. Not only can this cause more painful periods, but it can also create problems like allergies and eczema to name a few.Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is also a huge risk factor for SIBO, and as you may now know, at present SIBO is estimated as affecting 80% of the endo population.I could go on with the overlapping symptoms and connections, but instead, I'll let you hear it first hand from Natalia Kasnakidis who is not only an endometriosis warrior, but is also living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, histamine intolerance and potentially postural tachycardia syndrome. In this episode we talk about:What the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes are and how common they are.The signs and symptoms to look out for and Natalia's own experience with her symptoms. The journey she tool to diagnosis and her tips for getting diagnosed. The co-conditions of EDS and their symptoms. You all know I've been fascinated with the world of chronic pain science for a long time now. In fact, I did an episode on lowering pain signals through calming the brain and nervous system back in 2019 but I've been on a continuously evolving research journey since. And this research has led me to Curable, an app for chronic pain, that works by helping to reprogram the brain and nervous system so we can unlearn pain pathways and reduce chronic pain flare ups. I absolutely love Curable, and use it with my clients to help them to address the ways in which trauma, stress and a heightened nervous system could be contributing to their pain levels. Often I find it's the missing piece of the puzzle in someone's endo healing journey. So I am so excited to introduce you to this week's guest, social worker and psychotherapist Christie Uipi. Christie is on the Scientific Advisory Team at Curable, and is specialised in chronic pain, depression and anxiety. After enduring years of chronic pain herself, Christie went on to not only cure her chronic pain but also to specialise in treating it! In today's episode, we discuss:Christie's personal story with chronic pain. How all pain is made in the brain and how that differs from being told endo pain is just “all in our heads”.How pain evolves to become chronic and how that changes the brain and nervous system. What factors influence chronic pain for better or worse. How to identify if pain is from tissue damage vs. an upregulated nervous system. How an upregulated nervous system can directly influence endometriosis pain.Exercises to begin reprogramming the brain to lower pain signals.I really hope this episode is useful to you and perhaps it will be the missing link you've been looking for in your own healing journey.Show NotesEndo Belly ChallengeEpisode 73 (pain signals, etc.)CurableChristie's websiteThis Might Hurt filmNeed more help or want to learn how to work with me?Free resources:This podcast! Today we're continuing with our theme of micronutrients and their impact on endo pain and period pain. Today, we're talking about B12. Research on the use of B12 for pain suggests that B12 can reduce chronic pain (and menstrual pain) through various methods. Firstly, B12 can inhibit the production of the inflammatory prostaglandins which are responsible for pain and inflammation, and are found to be especially high in people with endometriosis and dysmenorrhea (which is the medical term for period pain). Additionally, B12 plays a role in supporting nerve health and pain signally pathways, which can influence pain perception. If nerves or pain signalling pathways are comprised, this could increase pain levels. This is particularly relevant to those of us with endo who are suffering with nerve related pain due to endo on the nerves, nerve damage from surgery, leg pain, etc. Read more. Today we're continuing with our series on endo and period pain and their associations with low nutrient levels. And I was going to make today's episode all about vitamins, but there are so many vitamins to cover, that I thought it would be less overwhelming to break them up, so today, we're starting with vitamin E. However, before we get into today's episode, if you haven't listened to the previous episodes in this series then you'll be missing some of the essential science behind endo and period pain, which will help you to understand how vitamin E plays a role. Today we're continuing with our discussion on low nutrient levels and their association with period pain. Menstruation is often (though not always) one of the most painful parts of the menstrual cycle, for people with endometriosis - and a connection we see between both dysmenorrhea (which is the medical term for period pain) and endometriosis, is low omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are the precursors to anti-inflammatory prostaglandins; which basically means omega 3 makes our anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. In contrast, omega 6 makes our inflammatory prostaglandins, namely prostaglandin E2. And for those of who don't know, prostaglandins, in the simplest of terms, are immune chemicals. Read more. But to be clear, most of the side effects occur with high doses, over prolonged periods of times, with the exceptions occurring rarely in individuals who are particularly sensitive or have other issues going on that have affected how they respond or tolerate these supplements.
