But I totally disagree. I mean, just look at her work! And when you hear her talk about the work and how she got to where she is, it only confirms it: Maybe there was some luck... Shane Olson is a Senior Character Artist who specializes in creating stylized characters. He's been working in the Game Industry for nearly 20 years! Boy, did he have a treasure trove's worth of wisdom to share with us. Of the many gems he doled out, something that really stood out is this: Define who you are and what you want to be. Then make that clear in your portfolio. If you want to do characters, do characters. If you want to do cars, do cars. Make it clear to everyone how you are positioning yourself in the industry. (Are you an illustrator? Do you work in games or in film? Do you sculpt collectibles?) If you are looking to work at an independent company, you have the luxury of being versatile. But, especially if you want to work at a bigger company, focus your work so that everyone who sees your portfolio knows exactly who you are. He's fully committed not only to his work but also to constantly learning and improving. And he's regularly helping others and giving back to the community. He's got some amazing advice and pointers that he shares in this episode, but here's something that really stood out to me: "I think you always need to push yourself and try to do the thing you're most afraid of. People will see that you put in that effort and people will appreciate that." I am your host, Lou Mongello, and this is show #271 for the week of April 22, 2012. Happy Earth Day and Happy Anniversary Disney's Animal Kingdom! One of the things I enjoy sharing on the show are interviews with people whose work in the Disney Parks you may enjoy, but whose names you may not know. From Imagineers to artists. performers and more, each has their own journey and stories to share. This week, I want to introduce you to Casey Jones, a Senior Character Artist for the Disney Design Group. A former comic book artist for Marvel, he now helps to create some of our favorite icons and merchandise in the parks and Disney Cruise Line. From Vinymlations and the Park Starz series, to the Muppets and recent re-introduction of nostalgic items like the Little Orange Bird, Casey shares how these items came to be, from their concept to production. We also discuss Marvel and Disney, what's coming to Star Wars Weekends, advice for others, what we think or would like to see come next (including Avatarland), food, and much more. I'll have the answer and winner for last week's Walt Disney World Trivia Question of the Week, and pose a new one for your chance to win a Disney prize package. I'll then play more of your voicemails at the end of the show.
