Shockingly not another release of Skyrim! When our duo takes a request, it typically comes along with a guest, and this episode is no exception. Enter Rick from Pixel Project Radio who has chosen the surprising remaster of the fourth entry in a series dedicated to some especially old and rolled up parchment. Co-developed by Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos (who are quite familiar with tackling ports and remasters), this remaster takes a twenty year old action RPG and gives it a major facelift through the use of Unreal Engine 5. Can you believe that Chris never played the original? Did you know that Tom played his fair share, but never started the main quest? Well, thanks to our special guest, both of these tragic failings are about to be remedied. To say 2024 resembled a year of change for Xbox would be a bit of an understatement. Heading into a new year, the brand had all the momentum they had finally been seeking. They just delivered great, high profile exclusives in 2023 with the likes of a new Forza Motorsport, Starfield, and Hi Fi Rush, Game Pass delivered GOTY level experiences, and the Activision deal was finally done. Now, it was time to get down to business for the rest of the generation and Xbox did just that, only not in the way we expected. The reality is that the aforementioned momentum we all thought Xbox has ended up meaning very little. Their gaming brand barely generated profits in the final quarter of the year despite a highly anticipated Bethesda Game Studios game leading the charge. It was time for change and they made plenty. At the end of 2024, Xbox is now a multi-platform publisher, their dedication to future hardware is in question, and the social commentary surrounding their games has started to get messy. Combined with low quality deliveries in Shattered Space and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 as well as how divisive the long sought after Hellblade 2 ended up being and you have quite a lot to sift through. In a year full of negatives, can the Dukes find the positives, if any? How does 2025 shape up for Xbox with these changes now solidified? There's quite a bit to parse through, so let's get into one of the busiest years for Xbox. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Starfield faced a mighty amount of criticism throughout its 2023 launch. In today's gaming climate, this set the stage for what could be a big comeback for Bethesda Game Studios with the Shattered Space expansion. So, did it deliver? Matty has played 16 hours and finished it with Cog just getting his adventure started, so they both have much to say! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Apologies, we've been having issues with our feed, so this is why this is just now being posted. * This was originally recorded on 07/22/2024 *For 11 years, college football fans have been without a video game to call their own, and a court case effectively made it impossible to create a licensed CFB game. However, after three years of development, last week, EA College Football 25 became a reality, and with its release an outpour of hype and emotions swept over the nation as gamers and CFB fans could now go play as their favorite squads or alma maters yet again. Was the long wait worth it? Should you go out and buy it now? Or stick with what Madden's been offering over the years? Sean has his thoughts after spending almost a week now with the game. In more gaming-focused news, Microsoft and the FTC are perhaps in a battle again over the new edition to Xbox Game Pass and whether or not it degrades the service. Microsoft has responded to the FTC's claim. Who's right? Does the qualm really have any weight to it? And could the FTC actually win? Also, Bethesda Game Studios unionized, the Halo TV show is canceled, are big publishers not giving live service games a big enough window to succeed? AI, layoffs, restructuring, and so on. Indeed, we're in the midst of interesting times for our beloved industry, but the clash between creator and executive has never been greater. Jobs are being lost to AI as we expected, but it's happening now. Not later, but now. Every publishing label is claiming that times are tough, but no adjustments on spending has been made. As the industry continues to bleed talent, who will want to join it? This subject matter is the very heartbeat of this episode as the Dukes collectively recognize the missteps being made. So, how do things get better? What can be done to improve an industry controlled by misers? The Dukes have thoughts and hopes such as unionization which is what Bethesda Game Studios has recently done. We also hear from our old friends again at the FTC on how Game Pass Standard is losing its value and what the source of Xbox's faltering marketing initiative is. AFT 4 Palestine Petition: https://www.aft4palestine.org/take-action We've got an absolutely packed show this week, starting off with checkins on the Samsung strike, the IATSE contract ratification vote, and the struggle to unionize workers at Wonderful Nurseries. Our first big story is discussion of Teamsters President Sean O'Brien's speech at the Republican National Convention, the fallout, and the reaction from the rest of labor. Next we discuss the massive, overwhelming strike vote by over 30,000 machinists at Boeing, setting up for a potentially massive struggle this September. Amazon workers in the UK voted on forming the first union at the company, coming up devastatingly short. We also check in on workers around the country continuing to stand up for Palestine, and fight to push the labor movement to take a more active role in that struggle. Finally, we celebrate the big union win by workers at Bethesda Game Studios, who just formed the first wall-to-wall union at Microsoft. Well, this is a first. Matty had the opportunity to sit down with Bethesda Game Studios lead Todd Howard to discuss everything from Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI to Fallout and the company's shifting design philosophies! In an otherwise slow news week, the Dukes sink into all Todd had to share with Matty. What's going on with Fallout ports or New Vegas? How far along is Elder Scrolls VI and what technology is being used to build it? What's going on with Starfield Year 2 and will it be supported longer than prior BGS games? He shares a lot, so let's talk a lot! There's an old saying in Jesuit circles: If you've met one Jesuit, you've met one Jesuit. A fun list to make is all the different careers guys had before joining the Society of Jesus. We have actors and comedians, doctors and lawyers, astronomers and one former lieutenant governor. Shane Liesegang, SJ, today's guest, is the only Jesuit host Mike Jordan Laskey has ever met who was a video game developer. Before entering the Jesuits in 2015, Shane worked for over a decade in video game development for several different studios. He worked on hugely popular games like the Fallout Series and Skyrim. Shane was living his dream. But then he felt called to something more. Today, Shane is a Jesuit scholastic studying Theology at Boston College's Clough School of Theology and Ministry. He didn't leave his entire gaming life behind when he entered the Jesuits, though. In fact, one of Shane's former employers, a hugely influential studio called Bethesda Game Studios, brought him back into the fold to work on a game called Starfield that was released in 2023. In this deeply complex space exploration game, the studio wanted to create a fictional religion that certain characters in the game would profess. So they asked Shane to write this religion's core texts, which are featured in several places in the game. Shane argues that creating video games is an art form. The combination of visual aesthetics, interactivity and storytelling, not to mention the incredibly detailed and vast universes game developers make, all combine to elevate video games to something more than a mere time waster. If you're skeptical about this claim, let Shane try to convince you in this conversation. Shane also talked about his unique vocation story and how game design is not dissimilar from Ignatian imaginative prayer in some crucial ways. This was an utterly fascinating conversation and we think you'll really enjoy meeting Shane, whether you love video games or not. New reports and claims that a Starfield PS5 port is coming along with other games. Starfield coming to PS5 is something I reported on back in January, and now other sources seem to be hearing the same thing. More than that, even more Xbox games coming to PlayStation will also be a reality sooner than later. I continue to wonder how Xbox exclusive games will look going forward along with an Xbox new console or the "Xbox Next" in the future. Will it be announced at a PlayStation State of Play? Or what about this Phil Spencer business meeting next week to clarify the future of Xbox? Starfield is a 2023 action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. In the game, the player character joins a group of space explorers who must venture to various corners of the galaxy to acquire mysterious artifacts. Nathanson's credits span the realms of video games, animated films and television, and even some live-action roles in her early days in the industry. Including the aforementioned League of Legends/“Briar” role, Nathanson's video game credits are spotlighted by her recently-released NPC companion Marika Boros in Bethesda Game Studios' Starfield, and long-running gig as “Samantha Maxis” in the Call of Duty franchise – most recently in Call of Duty: Cold War. For years, the Dukes were met with abuse and slander due to their faith in Starfield on how it can serve as a turning point in the current generation. The reviews have come and gone, the talk on the streets has become a bit messy to put it lightly, but the numbers don't lie. Starfield is a raging success across all metrics as it is now Bethesda Game Studios' biggest launch of all time as it managed to beat out the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4. To do so in an exclusive capacity puts things into perspective even more. With six million players already accounted for and likely millions more beyond that this point, Bethesda has committed to "years and years" of support thus paving the way for Starfield to become the most played Bethesda game ever as Phil Spencer desired. We also get into the mind boggling decisions Unity is making in regards to its popular game engine, Square Enix's recent plummet, the upcoming reveal of Indiana Jones, the Fallout TV show's leaked teaser trailer, and a plethora of more news in a jam packed week.
