We've got the team that brought you the CALL OF DUTY, ASSASSINS CREED and BATMAN ARKHAM TRILOGY campaigns and so much more! That's David Wilson, Executive Producer / Co-Head of Immersive Media at Aspect (Los Angeles); Ryan Vickers, Co-Head of Games at Aspect; and Ashley Vong, Games Producer at Aspect and Women in Games Ambassador. It's been so cool to track with folks like Ryan Vickers and David Wilson from when they were working their way up at that legendary, groundbreaking team at Ant Farm, and then as they took the leap to launch the games division at Aspect LA. Ashley Vong made her way on the theatrical side initially at Big Pic and then over at Aspect, and really hit her stride with David and Ryan (aka "my people") doing all that great work in games. This is an in-depth conversation on each of their stories, all they've overcome, what they love working on, their perspective on the work and the industry as a whole. The Agog Immersive Media Institute officially launched today by Grist-founder Chip Giller and philanthropist / investor Wendy Schmit. They describe Agog as "a groundbreaking initiative at the intersection of technology, communications, and social impact. Agog, a philanthropic organization, will help creators and nonprofit leaders harness the power of extended reality (XR) technologies to spur positive social transformation, opening new avenues for empathy, understanding, and activism." I had a chance to get a bit more context on Agog from co-founder Giller as well as advisor / consultant Amy Seidenwurm, who ran Meta's VR for Good initiative for six years. We talk about their five main areas of focus that include social justice and equity, high-impact storytelling/world-building, research, education and outreach, and advocacy and policy. They've been operating in stealth for a number of months already having been involved in a number of projects, and I'm really quite excited to see how they can help fill in some of the gaps that are needed within the growing XR ecosystem as more and more non-profits and social change organizations start to wrap their minds around how to integrate immersive media within their missions. Be sure to check out the Agog.org website for more information, and check it out in the Quest browser to see the first WebXR and AR iterations for what they intend to develop into a fully-spatial brand. It's not launching with full iOS or visionOS support yet, and I am able to see the AR components on Android, but it isn't as fully interactive on Quest yet. Still early days for WebXR, but keep an eye on how they continue to develop their website with more immersive features. This is a listener-supported podcast through the Voices of VR Patreon. (Nasdaq: MTTR), the leading digital twin platform to access, understand, and utilize properties, announced an agreement with Visiting Media, a global leader in immersive sales enablement and channel distribution solutions for the hospitality sector. Visiting Media serves tens of millions of users around the globe, supporting the world's largest hospitality brands including Hilton, Hyatt, IHG Hotels and Resorts and more. With this new agreement, Visiting Media deepens its use of Matterport's Digital Twin Platform and Property Marketing solution as the 3D technology of choice for the thousands of hotels it supports. In collaboration for years, Visiting Media has amplified the application of Matterport's digital twins for virtual tours of more than 17,000 spaces. With this extension of virtual tour capabilities, hospitality revenue teams can save daily hours by streamlining multiple workflows across their properties while supporting above-property teams and enhancing channel distribution capabilities. This new agreement highlights the powerful application of these technologies, working better together for the unique needs of hospitality sales and marketing teams. IDC analysts predict that by 2025, roughly 50% of travel and hospitality organizations will adopt digital twins to increase efficiency and, ultimately, bookings.1 The worldwide hospitality industry is a $4.7 trillion market according to Statista, and has historically relied on face-to-face engagements to facilitate sales, assess a property, or execute property improvement plans.2 The industry is currently undergoing a paradigm shift, with immersive technologies becoming an increasingly critical asset for the marketing and management of hotels, vacation rentals, entertainment venues, and more. Visiting Media's sales enablement platform is a pioneering force in the hospitality industry, providing hotels the ability to differentiate their offerings through a brand-agnostic interface to swiftly craft personalized Visiting Media Experiences for every prospect and guest. This unique approach ensures quick and versatile delivery through multiple channels to meet distinct customer's needs in a one-to-one or one-to-many approach through digital asset management and channel distribution. Integrating Matterport's digital twins with Visiting Media's software streamlines the access and distribution of marketing materials to empower sales and revenue teams in the competitive and fast-paced hospitality sector, enabling them to surpass revenue targets and thrive in a dynamic market. “Our commitment to excellence extends to our partnerships, and collaborating with Matterport exemplifies this dedication. At Visiting Media, we understand that offering top-notch software means aligning with best-in-class technologies to perfect workflows at and above properties,” said Ben Powers, CEO. “Integrating Matterport digital twins seamlessly into our platform is a natural progression to make immersion pragmatic and effective for our customers. We're not just changing expectations; we're setting a new standard for what a sales platform can achieve in the hospitality industry.” -- Matterport Media Release continues in the We Get Around Network Forum: https://www.wegetaroundnetwork.com/topic/19465/page/1/visiting-media--matterport-redefine-hospitality-sales-with-immersive-media/#1

The University of Oregon has introduced the first master's program in immersive technologies, focusing on augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and extended reality (XR). The program aims to create thought leaders and strategists in the field, helping organizations understand and utilize these technologies. Despite slower adoption rates than expected, AR and VR technologies are still experiencing steady growth. The program also highlights successful uses of AR and VR, such as the Australian wine brand 19 Crimes, which uses AR to animate the images of convicts on their wine bottles, providing a richer brand experience for consumers. But are we ready to use these tools? Are our audiences ready to consume them? Bolognino currently lives at Silent G Farms with wife Elizabeth, daughters Chloe and Francesca, son Just, and puppy Billie Holiday.SHOW INTRO:For some time now I have been interested in the merging of design, AI, technology, neuroscience, and art. They all seem to be coalescing into the creation of a new form of place-making.I like most others have been calling it 'immersive experiences' And while the places that are now being created to provide them are proliferating, I think that we are often seeing them only as spectacle. We pay a few dollars, get immersed in data paintings and surround sound, sometimes get corralled into a gift shop, and we're done. My guess is that we don't often look beyond the use of light and data as building materials – which on it's own is a fantastic and transformational tool in our designers tool box – to consider things like the interrelationship of the design of our environment and consciousness.I'm a big advocate of ontological design, which in its most basic description can be frames as - the things we design design us back. Our brain/body/mind is in a reciprocal feedback loop in which the things we design and put into the world in turn influence our neuro-biochemistry and neuro-physiology so that we are literally made in the image of the environments we inhabit. If we venture down the path of consciousness, we need to consider then that we are not singular entities in this world but that we are part of an integrated and interdependent rhythmic whole. Nicola Tesla wrote an article for Colliers Magazine in 1926 where he penned …“When wireless is perfectly applied, the whole earth will be converted to a huge brain, which in fact it is. All things being particles of a real and rhythmic whole…” He went on to explain that ‘the devices with which we would do this would fit in our breast packet and we would communicate with each other independent of geography…'1926!While written almost a hundred years ago Tesla was envisioning a future of digital communication where we would share information, enabled by software and hardware, and in doing so, we would augment our mindware.Dr. Dan Siegal has a definition of mind that seems to work from me.He explains the mind this way: The Mind is an “emergent, self-organizing, embodied, and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information.”Our minds are in constant reciprocal feedback loop with the environment including the people in it. We are not independent of it. Each of us as a constituent of a larger whole. The environments we inhabit change us as do the other people that we share those environments with. While we participate in our environments, digitally immersive or otherwise, our perceptions are our realities. This too invites us to consider the various types of realities we now engage in. We are growing beyond what we would have only considered as the reality of immediate experience. The ‘as lived' in ‘real-time' reality of every day. We now have Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. But it doesn't stop there. This is where Justin Bolognino helps created a framework for how we are coming to experience the world around us.Justin's ground-breaking endeavors are threaded by technology, real-time design and evolutionary immersive experiences that focus on revealing hidden human connections. For Justin, our world of experiences include a number of realities can be mapped. Between the Universe – the analog realities and the Metaverse – the digital realities, he defines 6 realities including sonic, IRL, conscious, augmented, virtual and on-line realities. All of these are interrelated and influence the others as well as how we create experiences. Justin's Map of realities is complex and layered with an acute awareness of where each plays a role in our lives creating context meaning and levels of consciousness. He calls himself a “Synchronicity Architect", which is a whole other realm of discussion that we get to in our conversation, and is the founder and CEO of META, an immersive experience studio that specializes in “The Art of Being There.” His company was founded originally as “the Meta Agency” in 2009 under Bolognino's philosophy that the artists creating cutting-edge digital event designs and high-tech performance elements should be recognized, much like the celebrities and brands they create for. Bolognino is extremely forward-thinking when it comes to technology's role in immersive experiences. Over the last 15 years, Bolognino has helped make Brooklyn Bowl a celebrated institution, redefined the SXSW experience through #FEED, produced multiple documentaries, led marketing campaigns, and created interactive art and live music for the sake of creation through his first company, Learned Evolution. He is a jazz musician and our conversation was woven with music theory, neuro and social science, digital media making, consciousness, branding, the influence of social networks on culture and more. There's a lot to Justin Bolognino, much more than I could ever hope to unpack in one podcast.Furthermore, I got the deep impression that the simple auditory format of the show would not do justice to Justin.I nevertheless take that limitation as a given and encourage all to visit his website and dive into his multilayered creative framework for creating live, multi-sensory experiences that use technology, design and storytelling to ignite the human spirit. In this episode Mark interviews author Susan Faw who is also the owner and founder of Dragon's Lair Artist Emporium, a physical bookstore in Norther Ontario that showcases books from indie authors. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a personal update, comments from recent episodes, and a word from this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by Findaway Voices. You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In their conversation, Mark and Susan talk about: Susan's first meeting with group of authors at a library session with the Stratford Writer's Group in about 2012 How long it took Susan to write her first book The actual work-related impetus of Susan writing her first novel Making the move to Northern Ontario from the Niagara region in Southern Ontario The population of the community Susan is in, which is about 6000 people How Susan is keeping busy on the writing side of things with a series she is writing The back story of creating Dragon's Lair Emporium The grant for Northern Ontario women that Susan used to create the store's website Opening the bookstore and then having to shut it down after 6 days due to a Provincial enforced shutdown due to Covid Just how eager customers are to get into the store Collaborative partnerships with the local high school How, at this point in time, Susan is getting most of her stock from Ingram Pricing setup advice and Susan's ability to see it from both the author and bookseller side The fact that Susan is not doing returns, which is typical modus operandi for a bookstore Coming up with creative ways to market books rather than just buying giant piles of books where half of them can be returned A reminder that if an author sets a 55% discount via Ingram Spark, the bookstore actually sees 40% Realizing that specific people who are only interested in discounted prices might not actually be your customer The forms where authors can submit their books for consideration to be carried in the bookstore What authors can do to help support the bookstore that is supporting indie authored books And more... After the interview, Mark reflects on the unique customers for print books in local physical bookstores, as contrasted to online shoppers on Amazon. He also reminds authors to consider their own books from the bookstore owner's perspective. Dragon's Lair Artist Emporium is the brain child of owner Susan Faw. Frustrated with the lack of venues available to independent authors, she a book store dedicated to authors worldwide, who have chosen a self-publishing career. Dragon's Lair Artist Emporium knows that there are many wonderful books deserving to be seen, and to be read. Dragon's Lair was born to give the independently published author what they have long been denied - space on a physical store shelf. Not only is this space for them, but their business model is built around showcasing the amazing, unrepresented talent that exists in the indie publishing sphere.
Mark interviews Dr. Rachel Noorda and Dr. Kathi Inman Berens about the Immersive Media & Books 2020 Consumer Survey conducted by the Panorama Project and Portland State University. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a word from this episode's sponsor (which includes a sample from the first narrator that Mark ever used through Findaway Voices). You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. Mark then shares comments from recent episodes and also a personal update. In his discussion with Dr. Noorda and Dr. Berens, the three discuss: Dr. Rachel Noorda's background at Portland State University directing the Masters book publishing program there and her route into the academic world The student-run press that publishes several trade books every year, giving the students a hands-on experience in publishing Dr. Kathi Inman Berens' undergrad work within publishing and her later long-term academic experience within open access publishing, digital pedagogy and related projects How there isn't a lot of book publishing research out there that's not proprietary in nature The origin and evolution of The Panorama Project Behaviors related to "engagement" with books that don't necessarily include buying or reading them How the survey was made up of people who "engaged with a book" at least once in the past 12 months An OverDrive study and a 2019 PEW research study and that both estimate between 75% and 85% of people have engaged with a book in the previous year How books are a very durable 500-year success story, according to Dr. Berens, that people have incredibly powerful feelings and emotions about Some of the research that revealed surprising results How the stats show that the suspected "show-rooming" of bricks and mortar stores that result in online (ie, Amazon) purchases is actually more of a 50/50 split. Sometimes people find books in bookstores and buy those same books online. Other times, people find the books online then buy them in bookstores. It's a two-way street How, while the biggest single realm of book discoverability (20%) is from friends, that 80% of the time people are finding books from a multitude of other means The difficulty of measuring or finding the typical 6 touch points a person needs to have with a book before they decide to purchase/read it All of the things that happen in purchasing behavior that we (as authors and publishers, and even as consumers) are not aware of How the Immersive Media report does have a specific section for authors The high relevance of "genre" and "favorite author" when it comes to deciding to buy a book How readers are often expecting some kind of "online access" to authors The "literary citizenship" that Jane Friedman talks about in her book THE BUSINESS OF BEING A WRITER And more... In this episode Joshua speaks with Dr. Rachel Noorda (@rachellynchase), Director of Book Publishing and Assistant Professor in English, and Dr. Kathi Inman Berens (@kathiiberens), Associate Professor of Book Publishing and Digital Humanities, at Portland State University. Rachel and Kathi are the lead researchers on Panorama Project's Immersive Media & Reading Consumer Survey, a survey-based consumer behavior study focused on how book discovery works and how libraries fit into the book discovery ecosystem. This cross-media study included representative samples from across U.S. population demographics and regions, and provides some important insights into how book consumers discover and purchase books. Book discovery is context-agnostic. People might see a book in a bookstore and buy that book online, or find it in the library and then go buy it in a bookstore. Sales data only shows us part of the picture, and book discovery is much broader than just word of mouth. There is no one formula for discovery, either, because consumers engage many different touch points, including many different kinds of media, in the process of discovering new books. Joshua, Rachel, and Kathi also talked about some of the surprising results from the study around book pirates, who are some of the most prolific book buyers, and how publishers can engage with them. Listeners of the podcast are encouraged to read the full report, and take advantage of its insights and data as you engage future acquisitions, marketing programs, and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/booksmarts/message

From across film and media I am joined by experts in their field to discuss the future of cinema and its place in the wider culture and industry. My esteemed guests are: - international VOD expert and Rights Stuff Founder Wendy Bernfeld - innovator, teacher and MD of the German Producers Association Erwin Schmidt - Acclaimed storyteller (and producer of one of my favourite films in recent years THE LUNCHBOX) Anurag Kashyap - Internationally recognised pioneer of VR and curator of Venice VR Days, Michel Reilhac In this conversation we look ahead to the next 5 years and explore the challenges and opportunities for cinema over that time. Drawing upon the guest's wide ranging experience and backgrounds, we discuss the innovations that could benefit the industry and how it can prosper in the wider context of the shifts in VOD, Production, Storytelling and Immersive Media. This episode was made possible with kind support of the New Cinema Conference.

“I’m absolutely convinced that the best way to learn is through play”Fable Studios has created a piece of Immersive storytelling that is pushing the boundaries of both technology and immersion as a creative medium; Wolves In the walls. A Virtual Reality story based on the book, Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaimen and Dave McKean. In this experience you are cast as the imaginary best friend of Lucy, a little girl who has become convinced that there are indeed wolves in her walls. It is hard to exaggerate the level of nuance and multidisciplinary expertise that has been deployed in the creation of this world. Wolves in the wall has sampled wisdom from gaming, film, behavioral psychology, and of course, Immersive theater; consulting with the master creatives at Third Rail Projects. Our guest, Pete Billington, is the Co-founder of Fable studios, a masterful storyteller, and a rare variety of systems thinker. He pulls from the well of his personal experience having worked on a wide range of projects including Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, The Matrix: Reloaded, and The Polar Express to inform the creation of Fable Studios. You'll hear us refer a couple of times to a previous conversation, which is a live version of the interview that was never recorded due to some technical issues at the venue. What's so exciting about this sequel to that first meeting, in addition to their generosity for coming back to record with me, is that we got to plunge fathoms deeper into the topic. It's a long one: but if you're like me and still deciding how to make sense of immersion and virtual media, spacial computing, and whether this will someday come together to the benefit of learners like us, then you should stick around for the full conversation. It might surprise you. Virtual and augmented reality are poised to disrupt media consumption in all areas—entertainment, journalism, and education to name a few. Are you skeptical about this influencing your teaching and learning? If so, think about how smart phones and mobile computing has changed the ways in which we consume information. Virtual and augmented reality is the next evolution of mobile media consumption, and will disrupt our uses of media in the same way that the iPhone did less than a few years ago. Eric Williams, Josh Antonuccio, and John Bowditch are the chief architects of the Immersive Media Initiative at Ohio University. In this episode, you will hear how they teach students in a technology environment that changes rapidly, as well as how uses of AR/VR technology is presenting exciting learning opportunities across a wide array of fields, and at all age levels. This is the first in a multi-show series on VR/AR uses in education settings. You can learn more about the Immersive Media Initiative by visiting http://gridlab.ohio.edu/projects/immersive-media-initative/
In episode 18 guest host Liat Berdugo helps dissect the impact of Virtual Reality and immersive media on our minds, hearts and bodies. The two of us discuss the concept of this proposed new medium and the unpredictability VR and the limitations of current reality.
Welcome to episode #466 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. We live in tough times for advertising. Yes, it's still a critical component of our economy and a very effective way to reach, connect and build loyalty. There's just so much of it. We have moved from a scarcity model to an abundance model in a very short time. There are countless options that make the old "three network" television model seem like a dinosaur. Frank Rose believes that the best kind of advertising is about real experiences. The kind of experiences that are so highly immersive for the consumer, that they're as enthralled by it as they are with a great movie or book. How many brands can make that happen? A long time contributing editor to Wired, Rose is also an accomplished book author who sits at the intersection of technology, new media and entertainment. Recently he published an article titled, The Power of Immersive Media, in Strategy + Business. Enjoy the conversation...
