Episode 140 - Books for Dads - The Most Human, Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy by Adam NimoyAdam was born during the Eisenhower administration to Leonard and Sandra Zoberblatt Nimoy. He attended the University Elementary School, a “lab school” run by UCLA, where he was subjected to numerous psychological experiments. The experimentation continued at UC Berkeley in the form of mind-altering substances from which he may, or may not, have fully recovered. In a state of absolute certainty, Adam attended Loyola Law School. He was wrong. After seven years of practicing entertainment law and one moment of clarity, Adam left his life as an attorney to follow his passion of making films. After directing forty-five hours of network television, some of it sublime, some of it eminently unwatchable, Adam's career plummeted due in large part to drug and alcohol addiction. On January 1, 2004, Adam entered 12-Step recovery hoping to achieve an attitude adjustment. This was a New Year's resolution he knew he had to keep. For 8 years, he taught writing, directing and acting at the New York Film Academy and taught filmmaking at Beit T'Shuvah, an addiction treatment center where the residents kept him on the straight and narrow.Book: The Most Human: Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy"Engaging and immensely relatable, while at the same time offering deeply profound insights into Adam Nimoy's personal relationships, particularly with his famous father." — Eugene Roddenberry Jr., CEO Roddenberry Entertainment Living with Dad was like living with a stranger— as a kid I often had trouble connecting and relating to him. But I was always proud of him. Even before Star Trek I'd see him popping up in bit roles on some of my favorite TV shows like Get Smart, Sea Hunt, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And then one night he brought home Polaroids of himself in makeup and wardrobe for a pilot he was working on. It was December 1964 and nobody had heard of Star Trek. Still, the eight-year-old me had watched enough Outer Limits and My Favorite Martian to understand exactly what I was looking at. Spock's popularity happened quickly, and soon the fan magazines were writing about dad's personal life, characterizing us as a "close family." But the awkwardness that defined our early relationship blossomed into conflict, sometimes smoldering, sometimes open and intense. There were occasional flashes of warmth between the arguments and hurt feelings— even something akin to love— especially when we were celebrating my father's many successes. The rest of the time, things between us were often strained. My resentment towards my father kept building through the years. I wasn't blameless, I know that now, but my bitterness blinded me to any thought of my own contribution to the problem. I wanted things to be different for my children. I wanted to be the father I never had, so I coached Maddy's soccer, drove Jonah to music lessons, helped them with their homework— all the things dads are supposed to do. All the things I wanted to do. So what if my Dad and I had been estranged for years? I was living one day at a time. And then I got his letter. That marked a turning point in our lives, a moment that cleared the way for a new relationship between us.Amazon link: https://amzn.to/3KvTi1shttps://adamnimoy.com/___https://dadspace.camusic provided by Blue Dot SessionsSong: The Big Ten
MONSTER PARTY SALUTES A GLORIOUS EIGHT-DECADE CAREER! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, celebrate the works of one of the most talented and prolific character actors of our age. Take a journey with us into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop... THE WORLD OF H.M. WYNANT!!! He has an IMDB bursting list of credits and has appeared in almost every radio, stage, television, and film genre. After languishing in developmental hell for years Guy Ritchie brought this stylish 60's spy thriller, based on the TV show to the big screen. Unfortunately, despite Ritchie's signature style and a great performance from Henry Cavill the film flopped hard at the box office. We are BACK with easily our longest episode title to date. In honor of Guy Ritchie's new spy action comedy period piece, we revisit another one of his spy action comedy period pieces that we believe to be one of the most criminally under-appreciated films this century and what the filmmaking of these two say about each other.
The fourth episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'s third season reflected the influence of Batman and contained a Dr. Strangelove parody.
Jeff and Andrew enter a world of espionage and intrigue with a discussion about Guy Ritchie's slick spy thriller, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." It's old school cool when Henry Cavill, Alicia Vikander and Armie Hammer team up in this humorous action-packed adaptation of the Cold War television series! "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." So it is with the notion that Thrush -- the villainous organization in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was an acronym.

The history of Nazi SS fighters in Canada; how Walter Payton's son ended up capturing the viral video of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce; the action director behind the John Wick prequel, The Continental; Marvel visual effects workers vote to unionize and Disney VFX workers might be next; how the star of the Man From U.N.C.L.E. laid the groundwork for a Dr. Dre smash hit; what happened with Ukraine's spring counter-offensive; and more.
It's hump day, so that means producer Greg Bach is co-hosting with Jane and they're talking about the Brewers winning the division, as well as Trump is a fraud?! They're also discussing the Good, The Bad and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Too much Tay Tay & Travis, Mel Tucker won't go away, Naked Attraction on Max, Donna D'Errico's sending pulses racing, Sen Bob. Menendez excuses, the best charting instrumental songs, and Matthew Perry has a new girl & is doing just fine. Trudi is back from her east coast vacation. It was good except for the POS AirBnb & broken down rental car. Some people are saying AirBnB is played out. Drew did a deep dive on the best charting instrumental songs. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are hot and heavy... and dominating everything in the media. She celebrated his touchdown, snuck out of the suite in a popcorn machine, and then left in his convertible to rent out a whole restaurant. Who knew Bill Belichick had jokes? Mel Tucker sends yet another letter to MSU saying they shouldn't have fired him. Former NFL running back Brandon Jacobs agrees. After all, Jacobs is convinced Mel was set up by the University. Naked Attraction on dropped on Max. It's a dating show, where everyone's nude & some are "lifting off the bag". Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde have settled their child custody case and something seems off. Everybody loved the show House even though every episode was the same. Dave Mathews is going to be canceled someday for his appearance on the show. Kevin Sorbo is mad that Hollywood actors aren't manly enough. Especially those high paid femmes: The Rock, Vin Diesel, Ryan Reynolds and Mark Walhberg. The writers strike in Hollywood is finally over. Both Trump and Biden are going to town to make the UAW strike all about them. The only thing that could possibly stop Vince Neil from rocking the OK state fair is gunshots. The Global Citizens concert happened and no one noticed. Red Hot Chili Peppers were the only set worth watching. Trudi threatened to leave her fridge. The fridge had second thoughts. The new replacement fridge is very sad and looking for a new home. Donna D'Errico is sending pulses racing again. She looks good, just not like Donna D'Errico. Matthew Perry is doing just fine, despite all evidence to the contrary. He even has a new girlfriend. RIP David McCallum from The Man From U.N.C.L.E. London cops have opened a criminal investigation into the Russell Brand allegations. Drew dumped Jennifer Anniston. Megan Rapinoe has not sung her final National Anthem for the USWNT. New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has been indicted (again) for bribery charges. He has a "press conference" where he didn't take any question. Former NJ Governor Jim McGreevey, who resigned because of a sex scandal, is back baby! The stardom of both Henry Cavill and cannibal fetishist Armie Hammer was on the rise in 2015, making it the perfect time to team them up in a buddy spy movie directed by Guy Ritchie. But despite a solid effort, a groovy 60's period setting and the always beguiling Alicia Vikander, this re-imaging of the cult TV show cried uncle at the box office. Join special agents Sebastian and Matt as they crack the code behind the Man from U.N.C.L.E.'s failure.
Welcome all to the podcast! In this episode, I continue my mini-series entitled "TV Goes To The Movies", a topic in which I intend to explore TV shows that migrated over to the big screen. As expected, my focus is musically what was or was not carried over from the television episodes of a particular series to its respective theatrical feature, such as the main TV theme. This time I open Channel D to examine "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." - a popular spy series which aired on NBC from 1964-1968. Its musical template was initially set by legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith, while still early in his career, and subsequently experienced many unexpected tonal shifts. Afterwards I discuss the eight "Man From U.N.C.L.E." "movies", each built from 2-part TV episodes and primarily released theatrically internationally, and lastly wrap up with the 2015 feature film, directed by Guy Ritchie, starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, with music composed by Daniel Pemberton. Title playtime index: Intro - 00:00:00 THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Theme (Concert Version) (Jerry Goldsmith) - 00:03:59 THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Theme (Season One broadcast version) (Jerry Goldsmith) - 00:06:15 Early Jerry Goldsmith TV & Film works - DR KILDARE (TV, 1961), CITY OF FEAR (Film, 1959), THE PRIZE (Film, 1963) - 00:07:10 THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (TV, Season One) (Jerry Goldsmith, Morton Stevens, Lalo Schifrin) - 00:15:50 THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (TV, Season Two) (Gerald Fried, Robert Drasnin) - 00:28:28 THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Guy Ritchie's "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." is a criminally underrated film and a personal favorite of James'. He's going to break down the reasons why it's such a great movie without too much of a deep analysis which we'll save for another episode. Enjoy!
