This week, we are reading Luke 7:36-50, where Jesus, a Pharisee named Simon, and a woman who is a sinner come together at a dinner party. The emotional intensity of this story is hard to overstate. As the woman cries over Jesus's feet, we wonder – what is the tenor of emotion that has cracked her open? Is it guilt & pleading? Gratitude or vulnerability? Is it longing? Jesus says that her faith has saved her, but what can we say about her faith from this short story where she never speaks? And how is it that she is laid bare in Jesus's presence, when the dinner host seems so ... calm?

This sermon is the last in a series of encounters between Jesus and his friends, interactions with those friendly to Jesus that teach us about our salvation. Jesus eats with the Pharisees, and all appears well until a woman shows up. Simon, the host, determines that she has no business interacting with Jesus. In reply, the Lord turns the dining facility into a classroom. Jesus uses a parable and the woman's response of love for him to teach about his immense grace in forgiving sins. Luke 7:36-50 helps us investigate just what kind of grace Jesus offers and the love we see displayed in response to his undeserved favor.

The Pharisee and other onlookers were judging Jesus in their hearts for not discerning that a "sinful" woman was washing his feet. However, they didn't realise that the irony of their thoughts is that not only are we all sinners and products of grace, but people who we slap the "sinners" tag on, are the right recipients of Christ's love. Sometimes we can take our forgiveness in Christ for granted. We can lose perspective on just how great a gift Jesus and His redemptive work in our lives really is. In Luke 7, Jesus encounters a self-righteous man and a woman who was a notorious sinner in her city. Though the host neglects the customary kindness of greeting Jesus, providing a washing basin for His feet, and anointing His head…this sinful woman, broken by shame, but freed by forgiveness, does all of this in extravagant fashion. This encounter teaches us that Jesus can erase our shame and reframe our life, regardless of where we've been, what we've done, or what others think about us. There's more mercy in Christ than sin in us!
An attitude of worship from a sinner. Luke, Chapter 7 compares a Jewish religious leader, a Pharisee, with a Samaritan woman. Jesus is invited to a Pharisees home for a meal. There are other invited guests and a woman who includes herself, because she wants to see Jesus. The attitudes of both, the Pharisee and the Samaritan woman, regarding who Jesus is… The post A Lesson in Worship from a Sinful Woman | Salvation is for you too appeared first on Pillar of Truth Radio.

One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.”44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.”48 And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

St. Ephraim offers a dynamic commentary on this famous story (Matthew 26:6-13) that the Orthodox Church reads each year on Holy Wednesday. Presenting detailed conversations between the sinful woman, the devil, Simon the Pharisee, and Christ, this homily is faithful to Scripture yet expands our understanding and experience of this most instructive example of repentance and love. -READ the text here: https://www.johnsanidopoulos.com/2018/04/homily-on-sinful-woman-st-ephraim-syrian.html -FIND an Orthodox parish and monastery near you: https://orthodoxyinamerica.org/ Troparion for Holy Week's Bridegroom Matins: "Behold, the Bridegroom comes at midnight, and blessed is the servant whom He shall find watching; and again unworthy is the servant whom He shall find heedless. Beware, therefore, O my soul, do not be weighed down with sleep, lest thou be given up to death, and lest thou be shut out of the Kingdom. But rouse thyself crying: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God. Through the Theotokos, have mercy on us." ______ From St. Ephraim's homily: The sinful woman answered and said to him, (even) to Satan, after his speech: "Well have you said that I go to inter the dead, one that has died to me. The sin of my thoughts has died, and I go to bury it." Christ speaking, "The great Physician is in your house. Allow sinners to look upon Me, for their sakes have I abased Myself. I will not ascend to heaven, to the dwelling whence I came down, until I bear back the sheep that has wandered from its Father's house, and lift it up on My shoulders and bear it aloft to heaven." Christ explaining who owes the 500 pence and who owes 50, speaking to Simon: "You are he that owes five hundred, and this woman owes fifty. Lo! I came into your house, O Simon; and water for My feet you brought not; and this woman, of whom you said that she was an harlot, one from her childhood defiled, has washed My feet with her tears, and with her hair she has wiped them. Ought I to send her away, O Simon, without receiving forgiveness? Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will write of her in the Gospel. Go, O woman, your sins are forgiven you and all your transgression is covered; henceforth and to the end of the world." ______ Orthodox Wisdom is dedicated to sharing the writings and lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church.
