This is the final episode of 2022! We'll return in the New Year on January 13th.  Our guest is Jan Adrian. Many of you know Jan through our Community Workshops on Zoom, or maybe you had the joy of attending a Healing Journeys conference. Jan was our very first podcast guest. And now, more than two years later, we're continuing the conversation - touching in on how her own cancer journey has evolved and diving deeper into the story of how Healing Journeys came to be, as well as what it might look like to continue Jan's transformative work.  As we close out the year, it would mean so much to us if you would take a few minutes to leave a review in your podcast app. If you are wondering how you can support this work, you can make an end-of-year donation, for which we would be very grateful. Visit cancertalks.com/donate for more information. CancerTalks is a platform for anyone who has been touched by cancer. Write to us at info@cancertalks.com if you have a story to share. Mentioned in this episode: Sophie Sabbage's brilliant TEDx talk: How Grief Can Help Us Win ~~~ Karen C.L. Anderson is a master-certified life coach and author who has helped hundreds of smart, creative women use the difficult relationships they have with their mothers as a catalyst for growth. Author of Difficult Mothers, Adult Daughters: A Guide For Separation, Liberation & Inspiration (March 2018); The Difficult Mother-Daughter Relationship Journal (January 2020); and Overcoming Creative Anxiety: Journal Prompts & Practices For Disarming Your Inner Critic (June 2020), Karen incorporates story-telling, journaling, awareness tools, shadow work, and simple energy and somatic practices in her Mother Lode 1:1 mentorship program. Her approach is safe, fun, and effective. Karen recognizes that what is possible personally is what is possible collectively, and that what is often referred to as the Mother Wound, is not actually about mothers, but about systems that oppress all women. She understands the adage, “hurt people, hurt people,” while also acknowledging that cultivating compassion and empathy does not necessarily equal access and that healthy boundaries (up to and including going “no contact”) are at the heart of healing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/kclanderson/message

Let Cancer Transform Your Life~   In this interview, Sophie Sabbage shares how cancer is transforming her life. Sophie’s terminal cancer diagnosis was a lifeshock and it also awakened her to her most authentic, loving, and creative self. Sophie is living with terminal lung cancer despite being given a few months to live over five and a half years ago. Upon hearing her diagnosis, Sophie vowed not to be a victim and took charge of her treatment. Furthermore, Sophie shares how she found the unlikely gifts of cancer and how the illness is transforming her life. In addition, we talk about lifeshocks, those unwanted and unexpected moments in our lives, and how they can awaken us to our most authentic, loving, and creative selves.    Sophie is the author of two Sunday Times bestsellers: The Cancer Whisperer, translated into twelve languages, and Lifeshocks, 2018 winner of the international Nautilus Gold Award for personal growth books. As a transformation specialist, Sophie equips people to engage powerfully with challenging lifeshocks. Also, she has nearly thirty years experience as both a business consultant and as a Senior Trainer with the More To Life Foundation. In addition, Sophie is a professional speaker.     In this episode, Sophie talks about the impact of fear on wellbeing and even on medical outcomes. Her experience of living with cancer, adversity, uncertainty, and facing death  is very relevant and useful to the current coronavirus situation. Finally, Sophie says “I have cancer, it does not have me.”    Episode Highlights:   First, Emily introduces her guest, Sophie Sabbage. Then, Sophie shares how she learned about her cancer. She tells us she pushed her doctors for scans.  After that, Sophie talks about her daughter who recently turned 10.   Sophie explains lifeshocks, those unwanted moments in time. She tells us that she is fortunate to have a toolkit for dealing with lifeshocks.   Next, Sophie shares that she was dying of fear. In other words, when the doctor told her she was going to die, she started dying. Furthermore, Sophie says she needed to get through fear to have a chance to stay alive. Sohpie discusses the symptoms she experienced before her cancer diagnosis.  She listened to her intuition and pressed the doctor for scans that saved her life.  Sophie shares that she wrote her book, The Cancer Whisperer, to help patients navigate the psychological and emotional territory of a cancer diagnosis. No one offered Sophie emotional support and she describes what it was like to sit in oncology ward waiting for her cancer treatment. She then describes the moment that led her to write the book. Sophie explains, “If we don’t take hold of our fear as patients, our fear will take care of us and make the decisions and run the show.”  She stresses the importance of not handing all of the power to the doctor. Then Sophie explains her darkest hour, when she learned she had multiple brain tumors. After that, she talks about the ways in which she educated herself and took charge of her treatment.  Sophie says the primary reason she’s still alive is the medical treatments she received. After that, Sophie talks about how she took control of her appointments, even delaying a treatment so she could see her daughter’s nativity play.  In other words, she says, “If I fit my life into cancer, I’m going to die soon in spirit if not in body. But if I fit cancer inside my life, I’m more likely to have a life.” Next, Sophie shares how the late Dr. K. Bradford Brown taught her to find unlikely gifts in unwanted happenings. After that, she explains why she wrote her second book: Lifeshocks And How to Love Them. Dr. K. Bradford Brown taught Sophie his mantra: There is no event by which and through which life its self is not trying to awaken you to your most authentic, loving, and creative self. There is no event that is not speaking to you. Lifeshocks are collision points between what we expect and how it really is. In other words, we run into reality and think it should be different. But actually these moments challenge our expectations, our conditioning, our belief in very profound ways. Sophie says “Sometimes we rise to our destinys when we’re brought to our knees.”  Next Sophie and Emily discuss the lifeshock of the COVID-19 crisis and how  we’re being humbled and reminded of what really matters. Sophie explains that if she held onto anything that said her life doesn’t matter she wouldn’t have been able to put energy into herself to stay alive. According to Sophie, the only way out of fear is through it - no way over or around it. Sophie shares that there is pain and suffering and illness in life but we make it worse because of how we interpret it as happening. In other words, fear is self generated by what we think. Sophie can control the quality of her life as long as there is breath in her body. Some people are free of cancer but not really free mentally.   Everything we feel is from the neck down. Our breath brings us into our bodies and our feelings. Next Sophie talks about her studies and work and how they prepared her for her cancer diagnosis. Emily talks about benefit of sharing stories and how they can help other people move onward. Sophie introduces a caveat on sharing stories saying, we must be conscious of where we’re coming from when we tell our stories. She tells her story to enhance  our lives. Finally, Sophie states  “I don’t want even this podcast to be about my story. I want it to be about there is no lifeshock by which and through wich life is not awakening you to your most authentic, loving, and creative self. That’s what I want this podcast to be about and that is for everyone who’s listening. Everyone.”    Resources Mentioned:   Sophie’s Books: The Cancer Whisperer & Lifeshocks - and How to Love Them  Sophie’s email: hello@sophiesabbage.com Sophie’s TEDx on grief   Learn more at  https://sophiesabbage.com/ and  http://www.cancerwhispering.com/ to include Sophie’s on-line Masterclass Sophie Sabbage LinkedIn Emily Harman Soul Pajamas Onward: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Onward Movement Facebook Group PodcastPress

Sophie Sabbage lived and breathed books as a child: they healed her and made sense of her life. And yet it took decades and the diganosis of a terminal illness that made her finally sit down and write. The result was The Cancer Whisperer, a bestselling book that was translated into 11 languages and transformed her life. And yet there was another book waiting: one that she'd promised her teacher and mentor to write as he was dying, ten years before. Lifeshocks is 'her greatest creative work', and yet she had to overcome myriad deep-seated fears that stopped her writing. This is a great listen if you've ever felt intimidated by what you want to create, felt that you're somehow not good enough, or simply felt that you haven't yet found what you're called to create. Sophie Sabbage shares her story of receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, working through the grief and then making the choice to allow cancer to transform her life. Learn how Sophie copes with the fear of cancer, how she feels healthier than ever, and what she's doing to help others with a cancer diagnosis. Sophie is an inspirational writer, speaker, and facilitator who has worked in the field of human development, emotional intelligence, mindset change, and corporate culture change for more than twenty years. The Cancer Whisperer was a UK bestseller and was release in the U.S. in 2017. Nuggets of Wisdom from Sophie: "The last of the human freedoms is to choose your own attitude in any given situation." ~Victor Frankl "I have cancer. Cancer does not have me." "I realized in that moment that I valued my lucidity and clarity of mind more than my life. And it was threatening my cognitive abilities, my ability to speak, my ability to see, my ability to understand, so it was terrifying for me, the idea that I going to lose my mind having worked for 30 years on gaining my right mind if that make sense." "I used to think people prayed on their knees as a sign of reverence and an act of humility but now I know that sometimes we are just bought to our knees by the events of our lives. And I was brought to my knees that day. I literally just dropped to my knees by the log fire at home. And I prayed. I do not often pray. I wept and I prayed. " "I think the grief and the surrender really empowered me paradoxically. I never thought of surrendering that way." "I want to just say it is okay to be vulnerable and it is okay to be terrified. And also, to teach people what to do with their terror. " "If you do not take hold of your fear and push through it, it will make your decisions for you as a cancer patient." "It puts you on war with your own body when you need to make peace with your body. I had been at war with my body my whole life. That is partly why I got cancer." "I knew I needed to make peace with my body and listen to it instead of fighting it. And I want to get rid of my disease. But I think I've got a better shot at doing that if I am listening to it than if I am in a state of anger and defiance and rebellion which just causes stress." "What if cancer is a teacher, not an enemy?" "I am more grateful to my cancer than I am scared of it. I am grateful for it. It transformed my life. I have let it transform my life. We need to be proactive to do that, but it has gifted me in many ways." "The most important thing is to get some support because it is a very arduous thing to do on your own. But mostly, it is about noticing what is running through your head and what you are believing. I call it mind talk. The mind would just make things up and terrify you with what is going to happen and you need to get that stuff out of your head and start verifying it and telling the truth about it." "Cancer is loaded with meanings. It is like a gun that gets shot at you, and you think the worst. Hair loss, control loss, pain, agony, misery. It all just runs through your head, instantly and in lightning speed. And you need to get that stuff out of your head, and you need to look at it in the cold light of day. And you need to get very accurate with what you are dealing with and get as much information from your doctor as you can. A lot of patients do not want to know everything because they are so scared. But the more you know, the more power you have. So, it is about getting hold of reality - the reality of what you are dealing with - even if it is more tumors in your brain than they can count." Some of Sophie's Favorite Things: Personal habit: "Breathing helps. Breathing brings us be present when we breathe consciously. And also, verifying my mind talk. I do it every day." Easy meal: "Avocado and feta salad." Possession: "My husband. And my kettle." Sophie's Favorite Books: "Thirst: Poems by Mary Oliver"  A Box Full of Darkness: "Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too was a gift." Best advice received: "The warrior's way: Seven times down. Eight times up. Then repeat." ~ Dr. Brad Brown "Do not become a patient, Mrs. Sabbage. Live your life." Sophie's Happiness Formula: "I am happiest when I am loving, when I am forgiving, when I am self-accepting and when I am thankful." A Challenge from Sophie: "I want to challenge listeners to write down three regrets that they have been harboring and then make a choice about each of those regrets. So, you can either let them go, and I mean really deeply let them go. Write on a piece of paper. Throw it in a fire, burn it, whatever it takes. Or choose an action to change the regret. " Resources The Cancer Whisperer Sophie Sabbage, The Cancer Whisperer SophieSabbage.com Follow Sophie on Facebook Subscribe to Vibrant Happy Women:
