25.10.24What Happens Next? Will AI Cut Us Off from Reality? | 94 In the Season 9 premiere of Monash University's “What Happens Next?”, host Dr Susan Carland and her expert guests examine one of today's most urgent topics: the impact of artificial intelligence on our perception of reality. With AI technology evolving rapidly, it's becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. From deepfakes that manipulate visual truth to AI companions offering mental health support, AI is reshaping how we interact with the world—and each other. In this episode, experts explore the ethical, psychological and societal implications of these advancements. Professor Geoff Webb from Monash's Faculty of Information Technology discusses how far AI capabilities have come in just a few years, while futurist Dr Ben Hamer warns of the dangers deepfakes pose to democracy and daily life. Dr Sue Keay, Chair of Robotics Australia, highlights the rise of humanoid robots and how they're changing human-AI interaction, and Professor Joanna Batstone outlines the evolving relationship between humans and machines. Associate professors Ben Wellings and Stephanie Collins discuss the implications of emerging technology on politics and philosophy. The episode also touches on the psychological impact of new technology, including the emerging phenomenon of “robotic nudging” and the value and drawbacks of AI companions. It's an enlightening—and cautionary—preview of how these technologies could shape our future. Listen now to hear how we can harness AI's potential while navigating the ethical minefield it creates. A full transcript of this episode is available on Monash Lens. Learn more: Are Our Machines a Little Too Human? Are Humans About to Evolve? Stephanie Collins writes in the Miramichi Reader about Barry's book: "Adventures of A Lightkeeper by Barry Porter is, quite simply, a romantic recounting of the maritime lifestyle of light keeping on the rugged northeast coastline of Newfoundland. Written with passion and great respect for the solitary life such a profession brings, Porter's book opens the door to these beautiful beacons of light and provides an exclusive tour of these lonely behemoths and the mystique for which they have become famous." Stephanie Collins, an award-winning author of With Angels Wings, has degrees in psychology and nursing. But, in the blink of an eye, she had to leave her career to care for her FOUR special needs children -- as a single mom.  After 23 years, she is still changing her child's diapers - but her attitude is beautiful - a true mother's love. Her story is one of strength and courage.  If you know of anyone who is the parent of a special needs child, this is a 'MUST LISTEN to' broadcast.   Stephanie does not see herself as a victim but someone who became strong in the face of adversity.  Through sheer perseverance and tenacity, she proved anyone can be an overcomer.   In Stephanie's words "If you are feeling overwhelmed and ready to give up -- I did too. These feelings aren't indicative of a weak constitution or failure -- they are symptoms of humanity.  People BECOME stronger every minute they persevere.  Focus on you NEXT breath -- you WILL get there. I’d like to say it was love and faith that helped me to overcome my darkest days…but maybe it was the turbulent times that helped to teach me the ever-important lessons of love and faith."   Her INCREDIBLE story of strength, courage, and tenacity is here.  A MUST LISTEN for anyone who knows or had a special needs child.
