But what if your solution isn't going to bring the result you think it will? In this episode, we take a look at 5 mistakes youth pastors often make when they are faced with the reality that their youth group is shrinking in size. To be clear, the size of your youth group doesn't automatically equal effectiveness, and not every youth ministry is destined for thousands of attendees. However, when you sense momentum has disappeared or attendance is declining, it requires thoughtful investigation rather than hasty reactions. In this strategic episode, we take a look at the challenging reality of student ministry stagnation and offer practical tips for reversing the course.=========We love hearing from you all and we do our best to provide powerful and insightful youth ministry content on a weekly basis to be that coach and mentor you may not have, but desperately need.If you have an episode idea, please E-Mail us at MinistryCoachPodcast@gmail.com!If you have it on your heart to support this ministry, please consider going to our Patreon page at: www.patreon.com/ministrycoach=========You may also enjoy these episodes:(#235) SPORTS vs. YOUTH GROUP: 5 Ways to Win the Battle of Priorities!(#240) Do Numbers Matter? This week, we took a break from Haggai and our Whole Heart series to hear a message on prayer from our Student Pastor, Ryan Oakes. Drawing from Philippians 4, Ryan reminded us that prayer is not about getting everything we ask for, but about being with God in every moment and bringing our honest selves before Him. He challenged us to let go of our desire for control and trust that, while God may not always change our circumstances, He promises a peace that guards our hearts.
What makes someone great in God's eyes? It's not age, skill, or outward strength—it's the heart. In this message, we look at the story of David: a young, overlooked shepherd boy with a heart fully set on God. While others saw size, God saw surrender. While Goliath flexed strength, David revealed God's glory. Greatness in the Kingdom doesn't wait for age or perfection—it begins with a heart aligned with God's purpose. We'll also introduce Nathan Johnson, our new Student Pastor, as he prepares to lead the next generation with that same kind of heart. This message will challenge you to give God your heart, trust Him with your youth, and live to display His greatness—not your own.

"...As far as East is from West..." (Psalm 103:12) That's how far God separates our sins from us. He gives us MERCY when we deserve punishment. He Gives us GRACE when we deserve to be chewed up and left in our misery... or worse. Billy's (one of my former youth students) story is a humbling one for a senior in high school. I hope his story helps you to see one of your young teenage students the way God sees them. God has personally shown me plenty of MERCY and GRACE that I do not deserve. I hope as you listen in to this episode that you see how God is speaking through you. _______________________________ Looking for a new student ministry resource? One of your main goals for your student ministry website should be: remove the barriers between your youth group and the families you're trying to reach. From years of "secret shopping" church websites, we reveal the common mistakes that create unnecessary hurdles for parents and students trying to connect with your ministry. We walk through exactly what information needs to be prominently displayed on your website and social media bios so that a newcomer can easily figure out how to get involved. Beyond just the technical aspects, we address the deeper issue of church trust-building through your online presence. This question haunted me early in youth ministry, especially as our youth group grew. What I discovered transformed our approach—program isn't the goal, but rather the vehicle that creates community, which in turn facilitates genuine discipleship and Christ-centered transformation. In this episode, we unpack five practical strategies that have revolutionized our ministry's impact. Youth ministry should never be measured by attendance numbers or entertainment value. Success is creating communities where students find belonging and discipleship that sustains their faith journey long after graduation.=========

Brian grew up in a small Georgia town where religion wasn't part of his upbringing, though he was surrounded by churches. Angry at the concept of God, he viewed religious beliefs as a way to escape the fear of death. In high school, he became an atheist but befriended a popular group of Christians. Although he criticized their beliefs to fit in and feel superior, he couldn't shake the sense that their faith had something genuine and authentic. Guest Bio: Brian Smith is a Student Pastor at Dunwoody Baptist Church in the Metro of Atlanta. He has been in student ministry for 16 years, and is a loving husband and father of four.
