Your eye color can change your day-to-day comfort in sunlight and it can hint at different long-term risks, but the real story is melanin. I'm Dr. Mark Grossman, an integrative medical optometrist and licensed acupuncturist, and I walk through what melanin is, how it functions as a natural pigment inside the eye, and why it acts like an internal shield against harmful light.We connect the science of eye pigment to practical outcomes: why darker eyes often block more UV and reduce internal glare, why lighter eyes can experience more light scatter and photophobia, and what that can mean for macular degeneration risk. We also discuss a noteworthy tradeoff mentioned by the American Academy of Ophthalmology about dark eyes and a slightly higher cataract risk, plus the higher risk of ocular uveal melanoma (a rare eye cancer) associated with lighter irises.From there, we get concrete about natural eye care and prevention. I explain melanin's protective roles like absorbing UVA and UVB radiation, helping stabilize free radicals, and filtering glare across the retina. Then we shift into what you can control today: wearing 100% UV-blocking sunglasses, using a wide-brimmed hat outdoors, and even looking into melanin-based sunglasses, which block 100% of UVA/UVB rays and filter High-Energy Visible (HEV) blue light. Should you be wearing sunglasses? We always thought the eyes just had one job: to see color and send pictures of our environment to our brains, but did you know that they also have a sensor that tells the brain when it's time to get going for the day and when it's time to sleep? That sensor can get disrupted when you head out with sunglasses on. In this episode, Dr. Motley weighs the pros and cons of sunglasses (at least in the morning!) by examining the science of light and circadian rhythms. In this episode you'll learn: How using sunglasses too frequently in the morning can throw our body's natural clock out of whack and interfere with our sleep cycles. How blue light in the morning (the natural kind you see in the sky) shuts off melatonin and activates cortisol by 50%, basically functioning as a cup of espresso for our bodies, and fake blue light at night confuses our sleep signals, suppressing melatonin within about 5 minutes. How light regulates our hormones and acts as our body's information center for when to start the day and when to get sleepy at night.  The effects of sunlight deficiency on our bodies and brains. The difference between the kind of cortisol we need to help us function during the day and the kind that's harmful. Doctor Motley's recommended full-day light protocol for resetting your internal clock. Get some light in your eyes within an hour of waking, and dim your lights at night. In TCM, eye health is tied to the liver. If you're a sunglasses lover try to prioritize getting morning light into your eyes for 30 minutes (looking through a window may not really be enough, so head outside for a bit). Professor of ophthalmology Daniel Palanker is a physicist who has combined his skills in optics and electronics to create PRIMA – the Photovoltaic Retinal Implant. Inserted beneath the retina, it restores vision to patients blinded by retinal degeneration, allowing them to read and write – and with the next-generation software, to recognize faces. PRIMA's photovoltaic pixels act like tiny solar panels, converting light into electricity to stimulate the remaining retinal neurons. Better yet, the growing field of brain-computer interfaces may have implications beyond ophthalmology. “Unlike medicine, where the road ends with curing a disease or restoring lost function, the prospects for brain-machine interfaces may be infinite,” Palanker tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast. La retina liquida è una soluzione in cui sono immerse delle nanoparticelle che, una volta iniettate con una siringa nel retro della retina, agiscono come microscopici pannelli fotovoltaici. For over a year, one of my most sought after guests to come on the show has been Chris Sherlock of Retina Rescue.  Way back in December 2019, I had a chance to sit down and have a discussion with Chris and I have wanted to have another opportunity ever since and it finally happened! Episode 107 is all about Chris Sherlock and his experience repairing and collecting the Kodak Retina system.  I promised Chris, I would make it very clear that he is still retired and is not taking in any new work, but Chris is still active on YouTube, publishing complete walkthroughs of CLAs on Retinas and other cameras. Joining Chris are Anthony, Paul, Stephen, Theo, and Mike and a long list of callers, including A.J. Gentile, Aaron Knesal, Ben Ryerson, Doug Willoughby, Eric Schneck, Fernando Villava, Joao Gomes, Greg Harp, Howard Sandler, Michael Boudreaux, Norris Liu, Pat Casey, Robert Rotoloni, and Will Pinkham. Chris starts things off with how he got started repairing cameras, all the way back in the 1970s working for Kodak in Wellington, New Zealand and then continues onto his first Retina models and why he started his site. We discuss a wide range of Kodak Retina models, from the folders, solid bodied rangefinders, to the SLRs.  Chris, Mike, and others share their favorite models and which ones we recommend for first time shooters and which ones have issues to look out for.  Chris explains what kinds of problems the Retina cocking rack may cause and why the later cameras have a long silk cord in them. It wouldn't be a Camerosity Episode if we didn't get off track, so we can thank Howard for bringing up the Voigtländer Ultramatic, Theo gives an update on the most recent Sydney Camera show, Greg Harp shares his recent 1930s Canon Standard pickup, and Aaron talks about his Yashica 44 TLR he bought from Paul. Ever since the very first episode of this show, we've aimed to include as many of our listeners in our shows as possible, but that our hosts are located in three different countries and in four different time zones makes finding a time that works for everyone difficult, especially those of you in Europe and other European-aligned time zones where it is often the middle of the night when we typically record.
