We sit down with Simone Rodigari, software engineer in Azure Core Container Networking and one of the maintainers of Retina, the eBPF-based observability project. In this episode of The Curious Realm, host Christopher Jordan ventures forth to the 2026 MUFON Symposium in Covington, Kentucky to talk with presenters and researcher alike about the burgeoning world of UFO disclosure from the Federal Government as well as UFOs as a mirror of society and their impact on science. Our first guest is Clas Svan, Chairman of the Archives for the Unexplained and UFO Sweden. We discuss the many years of case collection and investigative field work done by these organizations As well as some of the phenomenal cases in their archives. We also talk about the vast importance of preserving texts of localized histories and folklore and the necessity of making these archives available to the public. Our second guest is Keith Seland, author of The Humaniverse series to discuss ancient civilizations, their connection with the stars, our loss of connection with the stars, and what we might be able to learn from our ancestors when it comes to being prepared as humanity for a conversation with extraterrestrial life. Our third guest is Katie Paige, author and head of Rocky Mountain Ranch Research. We discuss what it is like to have had paranormal experiences across her lifetime, as well as the range of research these experiences have led to. Next, we welcome Steve Foss, President of TSIG, the Techno Signature Intercept Grid, a standalone device that gathers telltale signatures from various sensors to detect if an anomaly has occurred in localized airspace. How can this device help change the future of data collection of sky bound anomalies for groups like MUFON and more? Up next we welcome Bob Spearing MUFON board member to discuss his annual presentation on cases of interest that have been submitted to the organization. We also dive into what markers and requirements go into making a case submitted to MUFON become a “Case of Interest”. Our next guest is Seth Feinstein, newly appointed Director of Investigations for MUFON. Next, we welcome Bob Whitworth, who was the leader of this year's annual field investigator training at the MUFON symposium. We discuss the importance of unbiased data collection, and how we can move the field of UFO/UAP investigation and scientific endeavor forward through the sharing of data. Our next guest is Peter Robbins, author and UFO researcher, we discuss his many years of work with Bud Hopkins interviewing and helping abductees and experiencers. We also delve into Peter's personal sighting as a youth, how his later recalled memory and a confirmative conversation with his sister revealed not only more than he ever could have believed, but a truth that would change the course of his life from artist to one as a lifelong UFO researcher. Next, we welcome Jehan Azad of Off World Labs, a company that has created the Retina.fm passive radar system. Your eye color can change your day-to-day comfort in sunlight and it can hint at different long-term risks, but the real story is melanin. I'm Dr. Mark Grossman, an integrative medical optometrist and licensed acupuncturist, and I walk through what melanin is, how it functions as a natural pigment inside the eye, and why it acts like an internal shield against harmful light.We connect the science of eye pigment to practical outcomes: why darker eyes often block more UV and reduce internal glare, why lighter eyes can experience more light scatter and photophobia, and what that can mean for macular degeneration risk. We also discuss a noteworthy tradeoff mentioned by the American Academy of Ophthalmology about dark eyes and a slightly higher cataract risk, plus the higher risk of ocular uveal melanoma (a rare eye cancer) associated with lighter irises.From there, we get concrete about natural eye care and prevention. I explain melanin's protective roles like absorbing UVA and UVB radiation, helping stabilize free radicals, and filtering glare across the retina. Should you be wearing sunglasses? We always thought the eyes just had one job: to see color and send pictures of our environment to our brains, but did you know that they also have a sensor that tells the brain when it's time to get going for the day and when it's time to sleep? That sensor can get disrupted when you head out with sunglasses on. In this episode, Dr. Motley weighs the pros and cons of sunglasses (at least in the morning!) by examining the science of light and circadian rhythms. In this episode you'll learn: How using sunglasses too frequently in the morning can throw our body's natural clock out of whack and interfere with our sleep cycles. How blue light in the morning (the natural kind you see in the sky) shuts off melatonin and activates cortisol by 50%, basically functioning as a cup of espresso for our bodies, and fake blue light at night confuses our sleep signals, suppressing melatonin within about 5 minutes. How light regulates our hormones and acts as our body's information center for when to start the day and when to get sleepy at night.  The effects of sunlight deficiency on our bodies and brains. The difference between the kind of cortisol we need to help us function during the day and the kind that's harmful. Doctor Motley's recommended full-day light protocol for resetting your internal clock. Get some light in your eyes within an hour of waking, and dim your lights at night. In TCM, eye health is tied to the liver. If you're a sunglasses lover try to prioritize getting morning light into your eyes for 30 minutes (looking through a window may not really be enough, so head outside for a bit). Professor of ophthalmology Daniel Palanker is a physicist who has combined his skills in optics and electronics to create PRIMA – the Photovoltaic Retinal Implant. Inserted beneath the retina, it restores vision to patients blinded by retinal degeneration, allowing them to read and write – and with the next-generation software, to recognize faces. PRIMA's photovoltaic pixels act like tiny solar panels, converting light into electricity to stimulate the remaining retinal neurons. Better yet, the growing field of brain-computer interfaces may have implications beyond ophthalmology. “Unlike medicine, where the road ends with curing a disease or restoring lost function, the prospects for brain-machine interfaces may be infinite,” Palanker tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.
