Have you ever chased after an idea, goal, or title, only to realize that it isn't what you really want? Brooklyn Lindsey is back this week to remind us to step back and assess our desires. Once we peel back the layers, and understand what we are passionate about, we can take steps to align what we want with what we do. The powerful reminder in all of this is that we can't do it alone. We need a crash (which is a what a group of rhinos is called) to help us move past what seems immovable. We need people in our corner who lovingly, but firmly, remind us purpose and calling when we get turned upside down. Brooklyn is the co-founder of Somos Church in Lakeland, FL where she solves problems and celebrates her community with her husband, Coy Lindsey. She has been serving in youth ministry since 2001 and currently works as the Director of Content Development at Stuff You Can Use—an organization that helps ministries grow! She is the owner of an online and pop-up bookstore called Crash Bookshop and is a volunteer volleyball coach at Southwest Middle School and Lakeland High School (Beach) where she spends time with her teenage daughters Kirra and Mya. You can check out several of Brooklyn's books, including Confessions of a Not-So-Supermodel and The Kingdom Experiment, Youth Edition, along with many other resources from other authors at www.crashbookshop.org. Have you ever been deeply invested in an idea or project, but you just can't seem to ever see it through to competition? To be honest, I have found myself in this situation TOO MANY TIMES to count. Today on the podcast, one of my mentors, Brooklyn Lindsey is here to remind us to keep pursuing our purposes! Brooklyn is one of the most creative people I know and her vulnerability and unique perspectives will cause you to spit out your coffee and laugh out loud, while simultaneously inspiring you to run after your dreams with greater courage. In this week's episode, my friend, Linda Moon and I talk about lessons for the perfectionist from the cutest Disney movie ever—Encanto! We DO talk about Bruno (#sorrynotsorry), Mirabel, Abuela, and Luisa, and how they teach us so much about our own struggles with people pleasing, hiding our flaws, and not wanting to rock the boat. Linda and I talk about how easy it is to entangle perfectionism with our identity, but how God is reminding us that our value is not wrapped up in what we do. Today's episode is *pure gold*! I can't wait for you to listen in! Before you dive into the episode, let me introduce you to Linda: Linda Moon the Director of Grow Kid Curriculum for Stuff You Can Use and the Director of Education and associate pastor at her church in La Cañada, California. ABOUT THIS EPISODE: This season we want to focus the podcast on innovation -- a hot topic in the youth ministry community right now. Between some grants that have been available to youth pastors and a pandemic that forced people to get innovative, all of us have been faced with obstacles and been forced to turn them into opportunities. Who better to kick off this season than with Elle Campbell, who heads up Stuff You Can Use and Grow Curriculum? Elle's gift is innovation, and shares her wisdom with us today. ABOUT ELLE CAMPBELL: Elle is the co-founder and Chief Content Officer of Stuff You Can Use and Grow Curriculum. She has been doing youth ministry since she was a teenager and is passionate about ministry that empowers both teenagers and adult volunteers to lead and serve in significant ways. When she's not doing ministry stuff, Elle is probably reading a book or making something — food, a scarf, a new business, a puzzle, or a LEGO set maybe? Follow Elle on IG: @elllllllllllllllllle / @stuffyoucanuse, Twitter: @ellllllllllle / @stuffyoucanuse and Facebook: @stuffyoucanuse And don't forget to check out growcurriculum.org ABOUT WOMEN IN YOUTH MINISTRY: We are an organization that seeks to elevate the voices of women in a male-saturated field. A special Thanks to Stuff You Can Use and their Podcast, Kids Ministry Answers! I (Tom) had the special honor of being interviewed on their podcast and they graciously allowed me to share it with my KMC audience. Many leaders go through tough times and sometimes, the ministry can really hurt. God has allowed me to experience some really tough things and I believe its so I can help others walk through it and grow from it. I am now launching a special coaching ministry to help those hurting leaders to lead healthy again. I grew up in a denomination that affirms women and had trouble finding my place. I didn't start out wanting to be in youth ministry, I didn't even think about it, I fell in love with youth ministry. “We will take your student and love them no matter what” Support the show (http://community.youthministrybooster.com/)
In episode 157 Chad sits down with youth ministry director Angela Amerine to talk about falling into the calling and restoring the joy in youth ministry. The insight that she shares is timely for a season of ministry so cluttered with opportunities and distractions. About Angela Amerine: I have been serving in Student Ministries for 14 years in Inner city and suburban settings, in small and large group contexts. I currently serves as the Student Ministries Program Coordinator at Kentwood Community Church in the greater Grand Rapids Michigan area. I met my incredible husband Jared while serving as a youth pastor, and as of this month we have been married for 12 years! I am the mom to 2 amazing kids who I homeschool in my “free time”. I did my undergraduate work in Elementary Education at Spring Arbor University, and graduate work in Worship Leadership at Azusa Pacific University. Leading worship, raising up adult and student leaders, and coming up with creative ways to reach students for Jesus are some of my favorite things about what I get to do on a daily basis! In our 6th installment of the #womenInYM series a new friend Emily Acton stops by. You may recognize her name from the Stuff You Can Use Youth Ministry Facebook Community where she serves as a moderator, but she is also middle school minister (and one that just started in a new church!). Key Takeaway: Ask questions humbly. Listen closely. Collaborate without an agenda Adults handed me ministry before I thought I was ready. Literally, Keys were being handed to me. I learned by trying and failing, this is how I learned to use my gifts The moment of being invited to a student’s story as they are invited to God’s grander story is so special to me. When people show confidence in you it is easy to feel you like you are special Reading one youth ministry book does not make you an expert Ask questions humbly. Listen closely. It happens every week for almost every youth minister, the talk, the sermon, the chapel communication. The large group delivery to the youth ministry is an important vehicle for truth, but what is a healthy assessment and evaluation of that message. Elle Campbell and her husband Kenny, are founders of Stuff You Can Use.They have been doing youth ministry for over twenty combined years. They got their start at a church called The Chapel in Buffalo, NY, where they started as volunteers, but eventually joined The Chapel’s Middle School Ministry staff full-time In 2010, they launched Stuff You Can Use with just the two of them, a handful of resources, and a Twitter account. Their goal was to share some of the things we had created with the rest of the youth ministry community, and to make those resources as high-quality and easy-to-use as possible. This week I talked to Kenny and Elle Campbell. You probably know them best from their Stuff You Can Use website (stuffyoucanuse.org) or YM Answers Podcast (ymanswers.com). However, what you may not know is that they are passionate about middle school ministry. In fact, they are both working for Orange now focusing in on some great middle school things. We had a lot of fun talking middle school ministry but also tackling some '90s trivia. Other links you may want to check out: Try XP3 Middle School Curriculum for free! Kenny and Elle share their story of how they went into full time ministry, started Stuff You Can Use, and what they're doing today. [powerpress]
