Follow Forbes Talks Topline With gas prices hitting the $4-a-gallon “psychological wall,” many Americans may opt for a staycation this year. Key Facts On Tuesday, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. topped $4 per gallon for the first time since 2022.  Traditionally, between 85% and 90% of Americans drive to their summer vacation destinations rather than fly, according to AAA data. “Unless the administration figures this out very rapidly, we are probably coming up on the point of no return for the first four weeks of the summer driving season,” Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy's head of petroleum analysis, told Forbes.  A recent Yahoo/YouGov survey shows two-thirds (66%) of Americans disapprove of the way President Donald Trump is handling gas prices. An AP-NORC survey fielded this month shows 45% of Americans are “extremely” or “very” worried about being able to afford gas in the next few months, compared to 30% in December 2024, shortly after Trump was elected to his second term. Why Higher Gas May Play Differently This Year Than In 2022The $4-per-gallon milestone is a “psychological wall,” De Haan noted in a recent social media post. Chad opens the hour discussing a story about the lack of starter homes being built today. Later, Patrick De Haan joins with talk about Venezuela and gas prices and Dr. Michael Osterholm speaks with us about his grave concerns about how the federal government is changing the vaccine schedule recommendations for children.

On September 22, 1959, a devotional article appeared in Our Daily Bread written by Dr. M. R. DeHaan. He wrote about how he yearned for a box of Cracker Jack candied popcorn. His intention was to relate it to the yearning for the Scriptures. But to his surprise, a few weeks later, boxes upon boxes of Cracker Jack popcorn began arriving at his office. His desire for Cracker Jack was satisfied by the loyal readers of his devotional. Letting the practice of regular immersion in Scripture slip away is always easy. That’s why we need to yearn for something “sweeter than honey” (Psalm 19:10). The psalmist David encourages us to know that God’s words are “perfect, refreshing the soul”; they’re “trustworthy” and full of wisdom (v. 7). He explains that “the precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart” (v. 8). Dr. DeHaan encouraged readers to make interaction with the Scriptures a habit, something they craved each day, just like sweet popcorn. It’s vital for us as well to develop a habit of meditating and reflecting on the Bible, and responding to its truths, in a regular manner. As God helps us, let’s be like David who said, “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight” (v. 14).
