“Are you experienced?" Jimi Hendrix asked decades ago and that is the question Edward tackles in this episode of Chatting with the Lightkeeper. Surprisingly, a recent poll revealed that while a majority of those newer to the lifestyle, nearly half would not consider an equal or less experienced partner. Why this apparent contradiction? Explore the expectations of newcomers, the hesitations of veterans who have seen a few rodeos, the potential pitfalls of the fake it until you make it mentality, and a crucial warning about predatory people fishing for those who have less experience. Could your ideal partner be a blank slate, or is experience non-negotiable?

Courtesy of Barry Porter Barry Porter was born into a farming family in Porterville, on the north coast of Newfoundland, Canada. After working as a welder, Barry applied to be a relief lighthouse keeper with the Canadian Coast Guard. He spent the next 23 years working as a lightkeeper in four different locations. He has written about his colorful career in a new book, Adventures of a Lightkeeper. Barry Porter and his wife Alice at Bacalhao Island Lighthouse. Courtesy of Barry Porter. Stephanie Collins writes in the Miramichi Reader about Barry's book: "Adventures of A Lightkeeper by Barry Porter is, quite simply, a romantic recounting of the maritime lifestyle of light keeping on the rugged northeast coastline of Newfoundland. Written with passion and great respect for the solitary life such a profession brings, Porter's book opens the door to these beautiful beacons of light and provides an exclusive tour of these lonely behemoths and the mystique for which they have become famous." Barry Porter This is the second part in a three-part interview with Barry Porter, whose new book Adventures of a Lightkeeper tells the story of his 23 years (1983 to 2006) with the Canadian Coast Guard as a lighthouse keeper on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Barry started his years as a full-time principal keeper in 1984 at Long Point Light Station on North Twillingate Island. Long Point, with its distinctive red lighthouse tower, is one of the 23 light stations in Newfoundland that are still staffed by resident keepers. It's also a major tourist attraction. Painting the lighthouse tower at Bacalhao Island Barry's next stop in 1988 was Bacalhao Island Light Station, which takes its name from the Portuguese word for cod. Barry spent four years at Bacalhao Island and then moved on to Surgeon's Cove Head on Exploits Island. Barry ended up staying at Surgeon's Cove for 10 years, until it was automated in 2002. In 2003 Barry spent a brief period at Puffin Island Lighthouse, off Greenspond on the northwest side of Bonavista Bay. Then from 2003 to 2006, Barry was back at Long Point. Jim Bruton was born in Wales in 1926, but his family relocated to British Columbia in Canada when he was just one year old. He started working in the logging industry when he was 14. After serving as a merchant seaman during World War II, in 1945 Bruton became an assistant keeper, or junior keeper, at Lennard Island Lightstation, off the west coast of Vancouver Island near Tofino. Jim and Evelyn Bruton, courtesy of Elanie Bruton. After a brief time at Lennard Island, Jim Bruton left the lighthouse service for a while and returned in the logging industry. In 1951 he met and married Evelyn Stockman from Edmonton. Evelyn had no idea she would spend nearly 30 years at lighthouses. Jim returned to light keeping in 1958 as a junior keeper at Discovery Island. After a year and a half as junior keeper at Discovery Island, he was the principal keeper at Chrome Island off the east coast of Vancouver Island for four years. He then returned to Lennard Island from 1964 to 1968. Sheringham Point Lighthouse, BC. Photo by Jeremy D'Entremont. At a ceremony on March 20, 2016, a plaque signifying Sheringham Point Lighthouse as a Canadian Heritage Lighthouse was dedicated. The heritage plaque was unveiled by retired Senator Pat Carney (left) and Elanie Bruton (right). Courtesy of the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. Jim Bruton's daughter Sharon was married in the lantern room at Sheringham Point in 1976 with 16 people, including the minister, all crowded in the small space. Courtesy of Elanie Bruton. The Brutons eventually had four children, three girls and a boy. Their daughter Elanie lived at the light stations until she was 18. Jim Bruton was often heard to say, “I have the best kids in the world.” The family moved to Sheringham Point, a mainland lightstation in Shirley on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, in 1968. Jim Bruton replaced Fred Mountain, the previous keeper, who had died at the station. Bruton’s daughter Sharon was wed at the top of the lighthouse in December 1976, with the couple’s vows broadcast over CB radio. The Brutons lived at Sheringham Point for nearly two decades, until 1986, when Jim Bruton retired. Today, Jim’s daughter Elanie Bruton remains a very active volunteer of the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Society, which was formed in 2003 and took ownership of the lighthouse and surrounding land in 2015. This part 1 of 2. The second part, which will be posted on February 17, features interviews with Rebecca Quinn, author of Sheringham: A Canadian Heritage Story, and John Walls, vice president of the Sheringham Point Lighthouse Society.

Mark Kuehn Join Jeremy D'Entremont and co-host Cindy Johnson for an interview with Mark Kuehn of the North Point Lighthouse Museum in Wisconsin. North Point Lighthouse is in Lake Park on the East Side of Milwaukee. The lighthouse and the Queen Anne-style keeper’s house have been restored to their early twentieth century charm through the determined efforts of a group of volunteers, the North Point Lighthouse Friends, Inc., formed in 2002. Since completion of restoration in the fall of 2007, the historic site is open to the public for tours. The original keepers’ quarters now serves as a museum.
