Send us Fan MailMelissa Strong, was electrocuted at home, while working on a design project related to opening her now-acclaimed restaurant (Bird & Jim) in Estes Park, CO. She died briefly and came back, experiencing a forest and tunnel! When she came back, the damage was so severe that charred bones in her hands were visible, jutting out where fingers once were. Doctors initially told her she would likely only have four fingers left — her pinkies and index fingers. A passionate, elite climber, this was difficult news for Melissa to swallow. The recovery was long and brutal, both mentally and physically. At one point in the hospital, her arms were surgically sewn together, and she was riding a stationary bike in that condition just trying to keep her body moving and her mind sane. Six months later, she managed to open her first restaurant, and eventually found her way back to rock climbing. She wrote a memoir about the experience, published by Falcon, called Climbing Through: A Courageous Story of Grit, Healing, and Second Chances (March 3, 2026, paperback). Returning to climbing became a huge part of rebuilding both physically and mentally. This is a story of immense strength and inspiration! In this episode of The Sabotage Series, we break down the common belief that your circumstances determine what's possible for you. Through the lens of neuroscience, confirmation bias, negativity bias, neuroplasticity, and self-sabotage, I explain how your past experiences shape your beliefs - and how those beliefs unconsciously influence the actions you take, the opportunities you notice, and the reality you continue to create. I also open up about my own experiences growing up that could have shaped what I allowed to be possible for me, and how by believing I had the power to change my circumstances, I overcame anxiety and depression, and completely changed the trajectory of my life despite the odds against me. This episode is a reminder that while circumstances may shape your conditioning, they do not have to define your future.Subscribe to my newsletter here for more content.Work with me 1:1 here.Links to ebooks, guides, meditations, etc. here.

What if mental illness isn't just something happening in the brain - but a sign that something deeper within you is out of alignment? In this episode, I explore my personal belief that struggles like anxiety and depression may be more than symptoms of mental illness - they may be signals of spiritual disconnection. I share my own journey through years of chronic anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and emotional numbness, and how everything began to shift when I stopped living according to everyone else's expectations and started reconnecting with my truth, purpose, and inner voice. We dive into the idea that emotional pain may be the body's way of revealing where we are living out of alignment, how trauma and conditioning can disconnect us from who we really are, and why healing may require more than symptom management - it may require coming home to yourself.Subscribe to my newsletter & media platform here for more content.Work with me 1:1 here.Links to ebooks, guides, meditations, etc. here.

Dan Cohen, host of Awakenings in Real Life podcast and author, shares how his father had a two-day awakening from severe dementia after pneumonia treatment, becoming 90% himself again and delivering a message that changed how Dan views consciousness and what dementia patients might still understand. Dan's father developed dementia after a stroke at 75 and progressed through all seven stages over 10 years. He became nonverbal, incontinent, needed help with everything, had no short term memory. Then in 2015, after antibiotics and steroids for pneumonia, something unexpected happened. For two days, he became himself again. He recalled specific details about his grandchildren's lives that happened during his dementia. He had conversations nobody thought possible. He asked for things he hadn't asked for in a decade. Dan's brother videotaped him toward the end of those two days and asked what he was happy about. His father's answer became the foundation for Dan's entire mission. This wasn't terminal lucidity since it happened eight months before death, not hours or days. No medical explanation exists. Dan's brother, a doctor, searched for answers but colleagues and neurologists had never seen this in 30 years of practice. Dan shares the profound lessons of acceptance and inclusion for dementia patients, how small acts of kindness can transform lives, and why we should give living eulogies. Liz and Dan discuss whether consciousness might be less dependent on the brain than we've been raised to believe and what this awakening might mean for our understanding of awareness during dementia. On this episode of the CityLight Podcast, Pastor Bo Jancic calls believers to develop a deep hunger for truth in a world increasingly shaped by deception, distraction, and competing narratives. Building on the theme of the “sons of Issachar,” the message urges believers to understand the times they are living in—not through passive media consumption, but through intentional, Scripture-rooted discernment. Pastor Bo cautions against blindly accepting cultural narratives and emphasizes that identity is not found in political, cultural, or ethnic affiliations, but in Christ alone. Ultimately, this episode is a call to spiritual alertness and courage—encouraging believers to pursue truth at all costs and live with clarity, conviction, and unwavering faith.(00:00) Hunger for Truth vs. Comfortable Lies(03:31) The Holy Spirit Speaks Personally to Each Individual(05:42) A Life Changed by the Gospel(09:36) Sons of Issachar: Understanding the Times(13:24) Guarding Against Self-Deception(18:01) Cultural Ideologies & Biblical Discernment(24:53) Recap of Key “Isms” Affecting Society(30:02) Navigating Complex Global & Theological Issues(36:09) Identity, Israel, and Biblical Interpretation(41:28) Historical Context & Biblical Fulfillment(47:52) Final Reflections on Truth and Discernmenthttps://citylightnyc.com/

The Lord Jesus Christ changes lives and He changes destinies. There are many instances of this in the gospels, but in this broadcast we will be considering the salvation of what you might call a “poor, rich man”. He was extremely wealthy, the Bible says, but all his money was ill-gotten. Zacchaeus was the chief of tax collectors and climbed his way to the top by shrewd and fraudulent means. But he was not a happy man. He was troubled about his `sins and his need for salvation. One day, his opportunity came to see Jesus. But Jesus was looking for him, too. What a happy man he was to learn that the Son of Man came to seek and to save that was lost.

Anita, 67 years old, has lost about 150 pounds. She was overweight as a toddler and spent the vast majority of her life being morbidly obese. Anita began her dieting 'career' at age 12 when her Mom brought her to a Weight Watcher's meeting. After that, it was decades of yo yo dieting and trying every new thing that came out. In her early 50's, weighing about 320 lbs, Anita started low carb (Atkins type diet), then found keto and then found carnivore. In this, Anita has a purpose in life and that is to make sure that both men and women who are her age and have given up on life can hear that it is never too late. She achieves this by sharing cooking recipes on youtube (KetogenicWoman), as well as info that she hopes is educational and informative on a weekly livestream. Anita is currently writing a book 'Carnivore for Ageless Living' that will be published hopefully in late 2026. Anita is on zero medications, has no health issues other than arthritis in her left knee. She even cancelled her scheduled knee surgery and has been managing her pain by following a clean diet of meat, eggs and sardines! It is a dream for many people to pick up and move to another country. Virtually, no one acts on that dream. Steve Hoffman did. And it seems it takes a certain type of partner, a certain type of children and a certain type of risk tolerance. What do you do? Throw a dart and a map of France and moce there? The answer to that question and just about any question you might have in regardst o moving your entire family to a foreign country is answered in his book "A Season for That: Lost and Found in the Other Southern France" In this episode, I sat down with Steve Hoffman—a truly fascinating guest whose life journey has taken him from tax preparation in Minnesota to writing about food, wine, and the adventures that come when you upend your comfortable life and move your family to rural southern France. We kicked things off by talking about Steve Hoffman's unusual career blend: by day he's a seasoned tax preparer (25 years in the game), but his real creative passion lies in writing, especially about food and travel. We dove into his book, "A Season for That," which chronicles his family's adventure as they left behind their predictable Minnesota routine for a small French village—with two kids in tow. That journey was as much about immersing themselves in French culture and language as it was about discovering how to cook the local food and connect with the local winemaking traditions. One of the big themes we explored was creativity—how hard it is to switch gears from the structured world of numbers to the freewheeling world of writing. Both of us agreed: creativity is a skill you have to practice, nurture, and work at. We also talked about how the relentless pace of social media and AI-generated content creates burnout for today's creators, and how meaningful writing (and winemaking) always comes from a deep, unique personal perspective. We took the listeners through the excitement and challenges of integrating into French village life—the struggles with unfamiliar and often pungent cuisine, and how difficult it was for Steve Hoffman's kids to adjust. We got honest about failed dishes, peculiar local ingredients, and the cultural value of not wasting any part of the food. The conversation was filled with stories about learning from neighbors, the importance of family meals, and how sharing food and wine became a way of connecting across cultures. Of course, wine was front and center. We talked about the deep agricultural roots of winemaking in France, the differences between American and European wine culture, and why wine is so much more than just a beverage—it's a time capsule, capturing the character of a particular year and place. We compared the American pursuit of "great vintages" to the French view: that every vintage is valuable if it honestly expresses that year and terroir. Lastly, we dove into the mystique of wine pairing—questioning whether there's really a "perfect match" or if the best pairings are simply what fits the moment and mood. Sometimes you open a special bottle and let the food catch up, rather than the other way around! This episode was packed with personal anecdotes, deep dives into creativity and culture, and, most importantly, a celebration of wine as a connector between people, places, and memories. Whether you're a wine geek, a foodie, or just looking for inspiration to shake up your routine, you'll find something to savor here. Pull up a glass, and join us for the ride! What if the antidote to our frantic, hyper-scheduled lives is a single pot of herbs on the back step? In this deeply honest conversation, returning guest Bailey Van Tassel shares how planting one container cracked open a new way of living—rewiring how she mothers, works, and measures “success.” We talk about the joy of learning again as an adult, the “just-enoughness” a garden offers in every season, and why kids (and parents) come alive when we co-create with nature. You'll hear the city-to-soil story behind Bailey's new book Kitchen Garden Living, and the surprising ways a messy bed of flowers can mirror a beautiful, resilient family life. Listen and let your shoulders drop. Then we get practical: pollinator borders that invite life, trap crops that protect your veggies, companion planting that keeps pests in check, trellises and hoops that make space, and Bailey's simple “poker planting” method so you know what to grow, where, and how much. We also swap soul-feeding ideas—family foraging maps, pressed-flower pasta, homegrown teas and salves—and make the case to start small today. Comedian Benito Skinner grew up attending Catholic school in Idaho, where he didn't feel safe being an out gay man. Instead, he concealed his sexuality and threw himself into football. In This Bitesize HYL Episode... Kayla discusses two pivotal moments in her life that led to significant personal transformation. The first moment was investing in a coach, which provided her with accountability and a new perspective on her goals. The second moment was the birth of her son, which shifted her focus from herself to her family, motivating her to become a better version of herself. Takeaways Investing in yourself can lead to significant personal transformation. Financial commitment often brings a higher sense of value. You must find a purpose bigger than yourself to drive change. Self-awareness is crucial for breaking negative patterns. Accountability from a coach can accelerate your growth. Your choices impact not just you, but those around you. Change requires effort, sacrifice, and a mindset shift. Transformation is worth the effort when driven by a greater purpose. In today's episode, Ryan Holiday shares the profound shift these lessons had on his life since discovering Meditations at 19.
