It has been a busy 2023 in Australia with policymakers consulting on crypto licensing, AML/CTF reform, and more. Australia is home to a growing crypto ecosystem - crypto-assets are the second most popular investment after shares. With that growth has come regulatory scrutiny focused on consumer protection, combatting financial crime and creating a modern, risk-based regime for crypto-assets. In this episode, TRM's Ari Redbord and Angela Ang are joined by Joni Pirovich at BADAS*L, Brad Brown at AUSTRAC, and Steve Vallas at Blockchain APAC to discuss crypto regulatory developments in Australia.

Why you should listen: Vallas says “the promise of the Blockchain industry is extraordinarily expansive. Before we build out that capability we need a renewed focus on establishing confidence. Confidence in our vision, confidence in the regulatory frameworks that underpin this emergent technology, and confidence in the people and organizations that will drive the uptake in this space.” Key takeaway: As the new CEO of Blockchain Australia, Vallas says he is focused on building confidence in blockchain and improving the image of blockchain technology among businesses and governments. He says Blockchain Australia's success will be judged by its ability to educate (grassroots to the boardroom), elevate (drive innovation), and leverage partnerships (with industry leaders across the economy). In February, the Australian government released a National blockchain roadmap titled “Progressing towards a blockchain-empowered future.” The report projects that Blockchain technology will generate an annual business value of over US$175 billion by 2025 and in excess of US$3 trillion by 2030. The roadmap identifies three key areas where blockchain technology can provide solutions. These are in supply chains, trusted credentials in the university sector, and transferable customer checks in the finance sector.  Steve says his personal vision is for Australian stakeholders to gain confidence in blockchain tech. He wants developers to keep building, and for industry and investors to get buy-in.  Supporting links: Blockchain Australia Australia's blockchain roadmap Steve on Twitter Andy on Twitter  Brave New Coin on Twitter Brave New Coin BNC Pro The Crypto Conversation is sponsored by BNC Pro, the new digital wealth platform featuring an all-in-one suite of customizable, institutional-grade applications that help you manage your crypto investments. The PR Warrior Show is back, and we're kicking off this new season with an audio version of the video broadcast of the launch of Trevor Young's new book - 'Content Marketing for PR'. It's mainly a question-and-answer session, first with the host Steve Vallas asking questions of Trevor, and then members of the audience providing comments and asking questions. Become your own media channel and tell your stories like a PR pro! Are you struggling to cut through the noise and convey your message to the marketplace? We live in a fast-paced, digital-first world cluttered with brands and individuals telling the world how great they are. It’s no wonder consumers are so cynical and distrustful. They resent being interrupted with meaningless ads, pitches and promotional messages. They simply don’t care about you or your business—because you haven’t given them a reason to. Meanwhile, marketers and PR pros are beginning to accept that many of the methods they’ve been using to reach potential customers and influencers simply don’t work anymore. Bottom line: Standing out, getting noticed and resonating is a growing challenge for businesses and organizations, large and small. CHECK OUT THE BOOK WEBSITE BUY THE BOOK About the book Trust and reputation have never been more important in business Learn how to harness the power of both public relations and content marketing to build visibility, influence, trust, and credibility for your business, organization or personal brand. In this book, veteran public relations consultant and marketing speaker Trevor Young—aka “The PR Warrior”—shows you how to strategically use content marketing for PR to: Humanize your company or organization Deepen the connection your brand has with consumers Grow your influence within the industry you operate Build familiarity and a genuine sense of trust within the marketplace Connect with the people who influence your clients and customers Increase new business leads and sales Reduce the customer’s buying cycle Make paid-for advertising work harder Let new business come to you instead of sending out pitches Written for entrepreneurs, change agents, business leaders, marketers and PR practitioners, Content Marketing for PR is your essential guide to building a visible brand that’s recognized, respected and relevant in today’s noisy social world.

"Yes, it is good and bad," Steve Vallas is often asked if Blockchain technology is good or bad. And that is his standard answer. Privately Public or Publicly Private? In a future where we can privately verify public data or allow public access to anonymised private data will this transparency create more fairness? In other words, will justice finally become truly blind? Steve Vallas is a qualified lawyer who moved into the business strategy, digital marketing, and blockchain technology space. In this conversation, we explore how blockchain can create an ideal future where politics are transparent and justice is blind. We also look at the darker side of human nature and where blockchain can create the means to privacy that has never been available before. Steve works with businesses from startups to enterprise level to identify challenges, create strategic plans to meet business objectives and assist with implementation to fill resourcing gaps. Steve Vallas, the founder of Honey Digital, is quietly but surely making his mark in the Blockchain technology space. A qualified lawyer with a background in business strategy and digital marketing, Steve is developing a reputation as the Blockchain go-to guy in Australia. He has done this through relentless self-education, as well as proactively building connections and facilitating conversations with like-minded people interested in the space. In the wide-ranging chat with Trevor Young, Steve discusses how he's gone from being unknown in the Blockchain sector in Australia, to someone with a growing profile and reputation. Along the way, he has: staged Blockchain APAC 2018, the biggest event of its kind for enterprise in Australia (taking it from idea to fully-blown conference with 45 speakers, in just 10 weeks)been invited by Austrade to attend a major international Blockchain event in Shanghaiappeared on Australia's new Your Money TV channel We talk a lot on Reputation Revolution about the power of owned, earned and social media. In Steve's case, you can add another one - IRL (In Real Life) media.  One of the keys to Steve's ongoing success in this nascent sector is his willingness to attend Blockchain events, no matter how small and grassroots they may be. From professionally run conferences and seminars right through to informal meetups, over the course of a year, Steve has attended well over 100 events, on average of 2-3 per week. He says showing up to so many events and having genuine conversations with people builds familiarity and trust.  Key takeaways: Take the slow but steady route - Steve eschewed 'making a splash', preferring to bide his time, build his knowledge and expertise over a one-and-a-half to two-year period.Show up and be present - while people are out having a good time on a Friday night, Steve is attending another Blockchain event, potentially his third for the week. If the idea is a good one, back yourself in - organising a major conference from go-to-whoa in 10 weeks is a massive, if somewhat crazy, undertaking. But Steve could see the potential, and the risk paid off: running such an event has elevated Steve's standing within Blockchain circles.Build your community before you need it - Steve has been building his online/offline community for years, always adding value, helping people and rarely asking for much in return. When he wanted to generate some heat around Blockchain APAC 2018, he asked his community to help him spread the word on social media. The response was overwhelming, and a critical factor in the overall success of the event. Connect with Steve on Twitter.
