Future of Agriculture
Farming Full-Time On Five Acres With Steve Strasheim

Future of Agriculture

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 12, 2025 52:07

This quarter of the Future of Agriculture podcast is made possible by Case IH: https://www.caseih.com/en-us/unitedstatesTwisted River Farm: https://www.twistedriverfarm.com/Follow Steve on X: https://x.com/TRFyeomanfarmerSteve Strasheim of Twisted River Farm. I've followed Steve on X for a long time now, and I've been really looking forward to getting him on the show for a few reasons. He focuses on a totally different model for farming that is radically different from the commodity mindset. Instead of economies of scale being the priority, his top priority is connection to his customers. Because of that he's able to build his business without the two biggest barriers for most farmers: access to a lot of land and a lot of capital. It's more the bootstrapped version of getting started in farming. And I've seen this market garden model work. There are well-known YouTubers like Curtis Stone in Canada that have inspired countless others to pursue this version of farming on small sections of other people's land and building a business on customer relationships rather than economies of scale. I can remember being inspired by finding Curtis Stone's content maybe a decade ago, but I thought it was a model that could only work in urban areas with very affluent consumers that only want to buy local. In Steve's case, he's in rural Iowa. Mitchell, Iowa, to be exact. About 12 miles south of the Minnesota border. Steve first became interested in local food in 2013, so in 2014 he began raising chickens. He did that as a side business and then in 2017 he ditched the chicken project for vegetables, which he said proved to be a much better fit for him from the very beginning. Since that time he has grown his operation to a few different locations that total around three acres of borrowed land. He mostly pays in produce. Although when we spoke he was in the process of buying a five acre property to centralize his operation. Steve is a great example of what it takes to build a direct to consumer business from scratch. His model includes growing produce most of the year, he has some hoop houses that help him extend his season. He sells at a couple of farmers markets and thorough a CSA - which stands for community supported agriculture. These are subscriptions that his customers pay for to get a box of fresh produce either weekly or every other week. He also sells to some grocery stores and restaurants but since COVID his focus has been mostly on the direct sales to the end customer. And all of this is a very rural area, which kind of blows my mind.Brought to you by Case IH: Case IH designs, engineers and produces cutting-edge farm equipment based on a comprehensive understanding of farmers' needs, wants and challenges, integrating these insights into their development and manufacturing. For example, take their Model Year 25 Magnum tractor. The new Magnum is purposefully designed to answer farmers' needs in every design and engineering choice. Improved horsepower for pulling heavier loads, faster. Bundled, integrated and ready-to-go precision tech for greater accuracy in the field. And a transmission farmers can tweak for improved control and performance in different tasks. That kind of design thinking is exactly where the future of ag is headed, and that's why you'll be hearing me talk to the folks at Case IH at different points throughout this quarter about what they do and how they're working to push the ag forward.

Steve highlights the importance of listening to and investing in young people, overcoming barriers, and fostering a supportive environment. The episode concludes with heartwarming anecdotes, emphasizing the transformative power of music and community support.   In Steve's own words, [00:01:10] Steve Goodman: It's also a safe space for them to go. They come initially because they wanted the music, but some just come because they just want something to do in an evening. So many young people with nothing to do out there, and especially since COVID has hit. We decided that this would be something that we could do and help. Episode 43: Recorded April 3, 2024 "They're built to be a service dog in terms of physicality and temperament..." Australian animal trainer Steve Austin, on the Greyhound as a breed suitable for therapy dog training Show Notes Steve Austin had a knack for training animals at an early age. Growing up in New South Wales, Australia, he realized the value of positive reinforcement for dog training. As a teenager, Steve and his first dog -- a stray by the name of Sooty -- entertained the crowds on paydays at the local pub. Sooty was trained to balance a "schooner" of beer on his head. In Steve's words, "When he got it right, I made a lot of money that night..." Steve describes Sooty as rough, tough, black and mean -- a dog that would live to the age of 17. "He loved me, and I loved him." Along with dog obedience competitions, Steve fed his passion for animal training, and his skills as a trainer would expand beyond dogs to other animal species, including elephants and pigs. Steve's accomplishments include training animals for TV and film, prison dog behavior programs, and preparing PTSD dogs for Australian soldiers returning from combat. His book -- Working Dog Heroes -- is a heartfelt memoir of all these experiences as a trainer. In this episode, host John Parker explores Steve's latest initiative -- training former Australian racing Greyhounds as police therapy dogs in the United States. Steve shares the inception of the partnership with Greyhound Racing New South Wales and the results of the first Greyhound placements. He discusses the characteristics of the Greyhound breed that make them suited for training, and he waxes poetic about his expectations of his first ever personal Greyhound adoption. Today's special guest Steve Rizzo, a notable motivational speaker and former comedian, is here to talk about his hilarious book Conversations with Bob, which he devoted seven years to writing. The title character, Bob, is a higher being/God that appears to Bernie, a newly crossed over, negative minded soul, as an old Hippie. But Bob is not as he appears. He is wise, brilliant, all-knowing, and really funny. The conversations between the two make you laugh, and will prompt you to start a dialogue between your own Inner Bob and your own Inner Bernie. Steve describes the book as a mission for all of us to adhere to. He wants to spend the rest of his life spreading his entertaining, thought-provoking, timeless message. Steve Rizzo was a national headline comedian, with opening acts such as Drew Carey, Rosie O'Donnell, and Chris Rock. He shared the marquee with Ellen DeGeneres, Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy, and Jerry Seinfeld. He starred in his own Showtime comedy special, earning him honors as a Showtime Comedy All-Star.  Steveis a member of the prestigious Speakers Hall of Fame—an honor bestowed on fewer than 200 speakers worldwide since 1977. However, he didn't start out this way. His is a story that people will resonate with, similar to the theme in “Rocky,” where the underdog rises to the occasion and takes his place amongst the winners. In Steve's case, he was voted least likely to succeed in high school. That didn't stop him. He went on to prove the naysayers wrong by graduating with high honors at the university and postgraduate level. In a full-circle moment, he returned to teach at his high school, changing the narrative others had written for him.

#150 Why you should be aware of ISO 17021 ahead of your next Certification Body visit

If you are going for certification, or currently manage a certified ISO Management System, then you should also be aware of ISO 17021 ahead of any Assessments or Surveillance audits conducted by an accredited Certification Body. ISO 17021 sets out requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems. It ensures that Certification Bodies provide a reliable assessment of compliance with the applicable requirements, carried out by a competent impartial audit team, to achieve a consistent result for all clients. So, why should you be aware of this Standard in particular? ISO 17021 also establishes what you as a client should expect from your Certification Body. Steve Mason, Managing Consultant at Blackmores, joins Mel to discuss what ISO 17021 is, why you should be aware of it and the requirements related to expected service delivery from Certification Bodies. You'll learn ●      What is ISO 17021 ●      The difference between accredited and non-accredited certification bodies ●      A brief overview of the Standard and client related requirements   Resources ●      isologyhub ●      International Accreditation Forum ●      ISO 17021   In this episode, we talk about: [01:40] Why are we talking about ISO 17021 now? In our internal Team Meetings, Certification Bodies are an established talking point. Highlighting the good and the bad, but in recent months it's been more on the negative side. Steve had highlighted ISO 17021 as the Standard to look at in regard to expected service delivery requirements from Certification Bodies – so here we are! [03:00] What is ISO 17021? The reason for the standard is that it ensures that all certification bodies are delivering the same level of service to all customers. Certification Bodies don't need to be certified to other standards such as ISO 9001, as ISO 17021 was specifically designed for the purpose of delivering certifications. It's also the standard where you can find out what's expected of Certification Bodies – like a Terms and Conditions or service level agreement. [05:00] The difference between accredited and non-accredited Certification Bodies - Go back and watch episode 19 to learn more. [06:10] Why is it important that the Certification Body is accredited? –  Accreditation proves that the Certification Body is being checked by another body. Accreditation is also recognised worldwide – it's trusted as a gold standard of performance. There are many different accreditation bodies around the world, here in the UK it's UKAS, but there are others such as ANAB in the US. Check out the International Accreditation Forum website to confirm the accreditation body for your country. [08:10] Ultimately, a Certification Body can't offer accredited certification services unless they've actually been assessed by the applicable accreditation body to ISO 17021, and they need to do that on an ongoing basis like any other certification. They also may not be accredited to deliver every standard they offer – so make sure you verify with the certification body that they are in fact accredited to ISO 9001, ISO 27001 ect. [09:15] A brief overview of what's included in ISO 17021 – A lot of the clauses before this are really about the management of certification body, but when it comes to clause 9, this is where the customer becomes a lot more involved in the requirements. It covers topics such as planning audits, conducting audits, certification decision making, maintaining certification, the appeals process, the complaints process and then keeping client records. Clause 9 in particular is where you, as a client, should focus. [11:00] What core principles are described in ISO 17021? - Impartiality, competence, responsibility, openness, confidentiality, responsiveness to complaints, risk based approach and legal responsibilities. [12:20] What personal behaviors should you expect from your assessor? – In Steve's experience, he's seen more and more assessors not living up to the requirements of ISO 17021. This could be for a number of reasons, i.e. they could have an uncooperative client, they may not have had adequate training, perhaps there's a break down between clients and client managers. Either way, these are a few of the qualities that Assessors should embody: ethical, fair, truthful, sincere, honest, discrete and open-minded. [14:00] A lack of open mindedness -  Steve had encountered an Assessor that stated ‘This must be wrong because I've never seen it done that way' – which is not open minded in the least. This resulted in a non-conformity which should have never been raised. ISO 17021, clause 9.4.5 states that any non-conformity raised shall be recorded against a specific requirement in the Standard being audited. Assessors need to take heed not to assess to their preference. [15:15] Top Tip -  If you get asked a question, then give an answer and they raise that as a non-conformity that you're unsure as to why it's being raised - it's always worth asking the Assessor to show you where in the standard they're raising the non-conformity against. It's a case of clarifying the question and verifying what they're raising a non-conformity against, and if there's a justification for it. If there is, then great, they're doing a great job! If not, it may be the Assessor's personal bias, and there's a chance you can get that non-conformity down to an opportunity for improvement. [17:05] Other expected traits for Assessors to be aware of -  Collaborative: It should be a partnership between the client and Assessor – they want what's best for you. Tenacious: This can sometimes be taken too far. For example, if your Assessor it still assessing past 5pm, tell them to go home. If they need more time, then it's up to the certification body to work that one out. Other basic traits include: Observational, being perceptive and versatile. Today's conversation goes deep on this subject.

Imagine if letting go of false hopes could unfreeze your life and bring about incredible transformation.  Go here to listen →  https://atticusadvantage.com/episode044 That's exactly what Rory Clark did. Through courageously ending parts of his life that were no longer serving him, Rory intentionally laid the foundation for purposeful new beginnings. He burnt it all down to build something remarkable from the ashes. His bold choices have reshaped his law practice and his personal life in ways that bring him great joy. Rory's journey from being a large firm refugee to a successful elder law attorney is a testament to the power of saying no. He could reconstruct his practice with a multi-disciplinary approach by carefully selecting what he turned down. His personal experiences, such as the birth of his son with autism and other family struggles, greatly influenced his professional path. This transition away from traditional law and towards a comprehensive care network enabled him to bring immense value to families navigating life's continuum. In Steve's discussion with Rory, you'll gather wisdom on knowing when and how to say no, both in personal and professional relationships. But it's not just about ending things. It's about the purposeful beginnings that arise from those endings. We'll also explore the value of setting boundaries and expectations, managing capacity, and mentoring in business.  Rory's story is a vivid example of how strategically saying no can help us build a richer, more meaningful life. In this episode, you will hear: Rory Clark's quest of intentionally ending things to create new beginnings in both his personal and professional life The importance of being selective and strategic in choosing what to focus on and the need for necessary endings to create space for growth His personal experiences, including the birth of his son with autism and family struggles, that led him to transition from traditional law to a multi-disciplinary approach, including a care network The challenges and wisdom of maintaining healthy relationships both personally and professionally, including the importance of setting clear boundaries and expectations How saying no to certain things and understanding the value of necessary endings can help create a stronger focus on the goals and values of Rory's firm Building a culture of delegation and leadership in his firm, leading to a profitable marketing strategy, by taking time off and challenging his team How strategically saying “no” can help construct a more fulfilling life and a thriving professional or personal environment Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. How boomers entering retirement with medical debt, climate change, and other factors are going to impact life for all of us, regardless of age.  What happened when Steve told his wife that working from home during COVID was a preview of retirement–and how they resolved the conflict that came from it. Steve's journey to recovery from addiction began in 1992 and has become the foundation of his life and work. He is Chief Executive Officer at Feinberg Consulting, a company that helps families manage addiction, mental health issues and family healthcare crises. Feinberg's reason for being is to help those in crisis get the right kind of help fast. Sadly, too many people go through the healthcare system over and over with little results. Feinberg's goal is to give families and those in trouble the resources to get the right help fast and make it stick.  In Steve's words: I have over 40 years of experience as a business owner and entrepreneur. I'm a trained interventionist, and I work with hundreds of families, helping to create positive outcomes in addiction, mental health, family crisis interventions and healing. I have made my passion my career, and I am proud to be part of Feinberg Consulting, a great group of people involved in personal growth, interventions, mental health, addiction recovery and self-care. I love what I do and am grateful for every part of my journey that has led me here. My philosophy is that balance, continual effort towards optimal self-care, and ongoing personal development are everything when it comes to being your best.            3 top tips for my audience: 1. Don't lose hope. Healing really is really possible even if you feel like you've tried everything. 2. If a loved one has an addiction or mental health challenge, you have the power to adjust your approach and attitude to dealing with it, and that can make all the difference. 3. An Intervention can combat the denial inherent in addiction and mental health challenges. If the person of concern seems blind or unresponsive to the ways their behavior is affecting their friends and loved ones, this process can do wonders in reframing the way they think about their behavior.

Steve Wiideman, CEO of Wiideman Consulting Group, works with globally recognized brands helping them increase their organic traffic using SEO and SEM. With a portfolio of growing traffic for brands like Disney, IBM, and Sketchers, Steve knows the importance of search engine optimization and its effect on sales. When your SEO and SEM aren't optimized, you're leaving money on the table. When Steve isn't increasing Google ranking for household names, you can find him teaching at UC San Diego, Cal State Fullerton, and Fullerton Community College. Follow along if you're interested in learning about SEO and SEM best practices and how they can increase your Google ranking. As an Author of The Marketing textbook SEO strategy and skills, Steve understands that SEO is not a rule you must follow to win. It's really about focusing on the evergreen principles that carry over from every industry, product, and service you market for. SEO and SEM are forever changing, but the winning tactics and strategies remain the same. For instance, Google ranking will always be necessary, as well as inbound and outbound links. This understanding allows you to focus on things that will push the needle forward yet directs you to the concepts you need to update to stay relevant.SEO and Google ranking are what keep the lights on for many businesses. For example, during the pandemic, restaurants had to shut doors for indoor dining when everyone was under lockdown. Creative minds came up with the solution. Restaurants and eateries had to pivot to survive. Many introduced take-out or delivery and curbside pickup, yet customers had to be made aware of their new offer. That's where SEO and inbound marketing come into place. . Many restaurants had to update their SEO and create pages to educate their consumer on their new offer. The eateries that pivoted with the times are the ones that survived. In Steve's opinion, there is no “one thing” that you have to do or that you should do to rank high on Google. There is no magic formula for a new business to rank high for SEO. Steve recommends that new companies in competitive markets focus on building relationships within the same vertical as you so that you can get referrals rather than concentrate on SEO directly. Once you're established in your market, that's when you should focus intensely on SEO. Do things to start ranking for the competitive keywords. If you're well-versed in SEO you understand that top ranking doesn't happen overnight. It takes time to unroot a business that ranks #1. On the other end of the spectrum, if you're a new business in an unknown industry, you need to create a demand for what you're selling. SEO is not your number one priority because your audience doesn't even know you exist, so they can't search for you. You first need to create content to drive traffic to your website. Put yourself out there and collect email addresses. Build a list of subscribers to your blog or newsletter. Once your company is well known, that's when you focus on SEO. An essential aspect of SEO and ranking is understanding that it doesn't happen overnight. There are many things to focus on that drive SEO, and you can't use all the different methods and strategies at once because then you don't know what works for your brand and what doesn't. Take the time to learn about your consumer, what they are searching for, why they are searching, and what keywords they use. One of the best tools that Steve recommends for claiming a top Google ranking is Google Console. If you take the time to understand the information Google is gathering for you and learn about the keywords you need to rank for, you can progress in your SEO. Keep at it, and you'll rank in the top 5. In this episode:[2:40] Steve goes over his passions and how he became a professor at three collegesYou need to follow your passion to live a happy...

Steve Pockross has been in the startup scene for over 25 years before he started as the CEO of Verblio, a content creation platform. Verblio has been an Inc 5000 winner 2x, a Mercury growth winner 5x, and was named a Colorado Company to watch in 2020. Verblio has over 3,000 writers creating premium content at scale, in over 65 vertices, publishing over 120,000 unique content articles this year alone. In Steve's experience, what drives business forward is having a team of talented people. Putting together a great team should not be based solely on people's experience. Rather it's their unique talents that make them a top choice. Today he shares his One Big Tip on why hiring for talent is a better choice than hiring for the experience. Steve Pockross began his career in the nonprofit sector, where his focus was on community development. Steve found himself in Brazil, working for the Community Development Bank of Brazil, where he focused on their micro-lending programs. After that, Steve worked for non-profits in San Francisco until he jumped ship and began his career at  HSBC. Looking for something more fulfilling, Steve started working at LiveOps. At LiveOps, he worked with silicone valley innovators and began to piece together a new business model. The concept was to create an innovative model using unique freelance talent combined with a technology platform to help scale businesses into the next stratosphere. That is how Steve ended up as the VP of Business Development Strategy at a startup company. Having found success, Steve worked his way through several other startups until he settled as CEO of Verblio.com. Verblio, a content creation platform hires unique talent that can deliver content in over 65 vertices. To build a great company, you need to focus on the people you're hiring. To attract the right talent, you need to create a hiring funnel, so the people who best fit your company's culture come to you, not the other way around. At Verblio, they focus on the individual, not on the educational background and resume. Frequently, it's the ability to understand both sides of the equation that makes an individual a quality candidate. You ensure that the company brand remains on target when you hire for culture. Specific energy runs through the employees that keeps everyone happy and productive. The growth potential is profound when you hold the hiring process open to the right people who can jive with your business culture. When you find the right people, they bring on other people through referral, which is how you grow your business. Culture and productivity become your brand. These things provide you with a competitive advantage, although they are hard to measure in terms of ROI. The best part of hiring for talent is that the talent gives the company the energy required to grow and expand. The best part of his job, according to Steve, is talking to the newly acquired talent after their first three months and discussing the hiring process. Their feedback is typically the same. They love the culture of the workplace and the creative energy. These two things work together synergistically to provide momentum and productivity. This is why Steve chooses his team members based on the talents they bring to the table and not the degrees or experience they have listed on their resumes. Join us for today's episode of the One Big Tip to learn why growing your business will be easy when hiring people based on their talent and personality and not on their past work experience. In this episode[2:24] Steve talks about his varied work experienceWhere you start your journey is not always where you end upHow to take the best part of what you're doing in one position and apply it to another so you can transition professionally.[5:24] Combining curated freelance talent and technoSupport the show

I didn't want to be last forever.” Tune into this episode of the 3RIPLE 3HREAT podcast to hear Steve Harris share about athletics, education and making sacrifices.

On this week's episode of The Mag Life Podcast, Daniel is joined by the immensely knowledgeable, Steve Tarani. With decades in the defense, law enforcement, and intelligence communities, Steve is a highly-respected firearm, defensive tactics, bladed weapons, and personal protection instructor. As of late, Tarani has specialized in awareness-based training, having incorporated this into his training classes as well as his books. Together, Daniel and Steve discuss the vital importance of soft skills versus hard skills, situational awareness training, and overcoming fear in a fight. https://media.blubrry.com/gunfightercast/content.blubrry.com/gunfightercast/193-Steve_Tarani.mp3 Host: Daniel Shaw Guest: Steve Tarani Introduction/Timeline: Eric Huh 00:37 What is your profession? Daniel starts off the conversation by asking what Steve's occupation entails. In a general sense, Steve Tarani would describe himself as a teacher of practical hard and soft skills. Hard skills is defined by talents or abilities that can be measured, often associated with on-the-job training such as programming, bookkeeping, foreign language skills, shooting, and the like. Soft skills by contrast relate more towards universal traits such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and adaptability. Over the decades of his teaching experience, Steve has leaned more toward soft skills as he finds these to be more applicable in day-to-day situations. Although he's made a career in training others, Steve constantly strives to keep his knowledge and skills up to date. In Steve's line of work, keeping up with the most current information in tactics and methodologies is essential. “So, I keep one foot in the training world and one foot in the ops world… I really don't want to be one of those guys ‘Hey twenty years ago when I did this…' ya know? Times change, people change, tactics change, gear changes. For your information to remain relevant to you, you to have to be in it, I think, day-to-day.” 04:26 Reacting to threats and close protection security The conversation shifts to the topic of close protection security and reacting to unexpected threats. Obviously, bodyguard work differs greatly from normal self-defense tactics. The vast majority of concealed carry shooters would react to a threat by immediately going for their gun and drawing. Steve reveals that in the world of close protection, he was taught that immediately going for the gun is a setup for failure. The time it takes to go for the firearm is ample time for the attacker to shoot at the VIP that you've been charged to protect. Instead, Steve was taught to prioritize observing threats in their entirety and to move the client away from danger. He uses the tragic incident of the Titanic as an analogy, saying if one could observe and see icebergs coming from a distance, it would make far more sense to simply avoid a head-on collision with them. In his eyes, the firearm is akin to a “lifeboat” on the Titanic, the last resort option and not a primary one. Processing and reacting to threats fall into three main categories: being proactive, active, and reactive. Taking notes from the book Left of Bang: How the Marine Corps' Combat Hunter Program Can Save Your Life by Jason Riley, Steve explains that the proactive and active phases are how we utilize our soft skills before a dangerous incident occurs or the “bang.” How we react after to the initial encounter with a threat is the reactive phase which forces out the hard skills. For example, soft skills such as using verbal de-escalation or analyzing a situation can avoid a conflict but should it occur anyways, the fighting abilities that come from hard skills come into play. 08:52 Soft skills vs hard skills in your everyday life Daniel asks Steve to explain the use of soft skills versus hard skills in the context of the average armed citizen. Steve believes that everything requires context and that people should a...

Join Steve and Matt as they talk about a short-term rental deal they closed last July, which just went live this month. The listing is a cabin located in the Coosawattee River Resort, a gated neighborhood with multiple pools, a game room, and other amenities. So far, the multi-floor cabin has been booked well. Hence, they will take us through what the place looks like, and the work put into it. Not only that but Steve and Matt will also explain the other facets of real estate that they dove into to feed their multifamily projects. As always, there's plenty to take away from today's episode, so make sure to stay tuned and enjoy!   Providing Value to Gain Value At first, Steve and Matt go over some exciting features of their multi-floor cabin listing, from the indoor slide to the game room, the fire pit in the back, the neighborhood amenities, so on and so forth. Most hosts, often new to real estate, would dismiss these features, focusing on the basic amenities of a short-term rental. However, these two saw these features as an opportunity to add value to the listing. As with most short-term rentals, people often book them to take a break from their usual routine. But with the rise of online listings for vacation rentals, standing out among people's searches becomes more challenging. Steve said it best with “we only get compensated for anything when we are providing value.” In other words, to stay on top of searches and possibly increase bookings, it is essential for you as the host to provide an experience rather than just another room to spend a few nights in. In Steve and Matt's case, providing an experience is what they aimed for. Hence, they added an arcade machine to the game room, featured the indoor slide in the listing's gallery, and emphasized its location's outdoor amenities. Steve also explained how, with short-term rentals, you could afford to be more active in providing these unique features, unlike with long-term ones, where providing basic amenities is more than enough value-added. In the end, when hosting vacation rentals, providing value through short-term quality experiences yields long-term quality results.  Outline of the episode:  ●       [01:30] How there are countless different ways to earn in real estate. ●       [03:11] The general area of the listing's location and why it is on top of searches. ●       [05:54] Using professional photography and points of differentiation in the listing. ●       [08:05] What the game room looks like and why they chose to provide it. ●       [09:57] Attracting the widest audience with key features anyone can enjoy. ●       [12:01] What the neighborhood is like and why it is essential to include it in the listing. ●       [13:49] Finding properties like the multi-floor cabin and the different markets to consider. ●       [16:34] The costs that went into closing the deal and rehabilitating the property. ●       [18:29] How real estate is not a purely passive way to generate cash flow. ●       [21:06] Why you should avoid investing and running a property in your local area. ●       [25:10] Partnering up when you lack the money to invest but want to get started. ●       [26:49] How you can get involved in Steve and Matt's multifamily deals.  https://www.millionairesmindsetblueprint.com/ Resources: ●    Multi-floor Cabin Listing  Connect with The Cashflow Project! ●    Website ●    LinkedIn ●    Youtube ●    Facebook ●    Instagram

Why Consistent Prospecting is Worth the Effort per Steve Hall, Ep #246

Sales Reinvented

Prospecting—though every salesperson hates to admit it—is the necessary evil in any business. You have to prospect to get leads in your funnel to nurture them through the process. But how you do it matters. That’s what Steve Hall—the Managing Director of Executive Sales Coaching Australia—emphasizes in this episode of Sales Reinvented. Don’t miss it! Outline of This Episode [0:48] Is it a matter of semantics?  [1:17] Why are they important? [2:52] Steve’s ideal prospecting process [5:52] Attributes a salesperson needs [7:05] Skills for salespeople to develop [7:46] Top 3 prospecting dos and don’ts [10:20] Persistence and resilience are powerful Is it a matter of semantics?  Prospecting and lead generation: They’re just labels, according to Steve. Prospecting is identifying potential customers who may have a need that you can supply and can afford to pay for it. Lead generation is looking for people in the middle of the buying process looking to buy.  In Steve’s opinion, prospecting is more important. You want to prospect for choice. If you have a full pipeline ready to buy, you won’t get desperate. You won’t try to close deals that aren’t ready or close those that don’t fit. The fuller your pipeline is, the less desperate you are.  Steve’s ideal prospecting process  Is there an ideal prospecting process? Steve’s answer? It depends. It depends on what you sell, who you sell it to, and what the deals are worth. It also depends on how big your team is. If you’re an individual, you have to do everything yourself. If you have a huge marketing team it’s different. Everyone has different capabilities. The most important thing is to understand who your ideal customer is and identify companies that fit that. Assuming that a new customer’s lifetime value is upward of $250,000, they’re worth putting effort into. So you need to do research (either you or your minions). Then you reach out to them. What do you do if someone is an ideal customer but they aren’t ready to buy yet? Do you come back in a year? Do you get them in a nurturing program? Who builds the relationship? Then you have the actual sales process. Steve has one client that has multiple people involved in the sales process: The CEO’s executive assistant does the research—with the list they’ve come up with as a team—to find out who the key players are.  The CEO or one of his staff get them on a business-to-business call. It works well for them—but won’t work for other companies. What attributes does a salesperson need to be successful with prospecting? What skills should they develop? Listen to hear Steve’s thoughts! Steve’s prospecting dos and don’ts Steve shared quite a few dos and don’ts for salespeople to keep in mind:  Prepare. Don’t just pick up the phone or send an email. Think about what you’re going to do. Targeting is critical.  Get comfortable with silence. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Have a respectful pattern interrupt to get their attention on you. Don’t use smart tricks and techniques. Everyone knows them and is used to them. Be genuine. Don’t be too salesy or too pushy. Don’t say “Hello, how are you?” Every single person does that. It says “I don’t really care how you are I just want to sell stuff to you.” Persistence and resilience are powerful Steve was working with a company trying to invest in aged care facilities. They wanted to talk to the CEO of the company they wanted to work with. The problem was that he couldn’t find a phone number for these people anywhere. Every single number for the company went to a call center! Eventually, he went to their website and looked at their press releases. The head of corporate communications had their mobile number on the press release. So Steve called him and asked him to forward a message to the CEO’s executive assistant.  She got back to him and said “The CEO is away—do you want to speak to the CFO?” Of course, they accepted, and that’s how he connected his client to this company. The moral of the story is that not everyone wants to be communicated with. But if you desperately want to connect—try the PR people.  Connect with Steve Hall Connect on LinkedIn Follow on Twitter Connect With Paul Watts  LinkedIn Twitter Subscribe to SALES REINVENTED Audio Production and Show notes by PODCAST FAST TRACK https://www.podcastfasttrack.com

Some believe Ponzi schemes are doomed to fail. But with a sophisticated schemer and a broad enough base of people, they might just be able to keep it going. In honor of Charles Ponzi’s birthday, we talk about the history of the Ponzi scheme and some of the amazing stories of how they’ve been exposed and ways to see them coming.  Today’s guest is Steve Weisman. Steve is a nationally recognized expert in scams and identity theft as well as a lawyer, college professor, and prolific author. His informative speeches, articles, and books make difficult subjects not only understandable, but enjoyable with the humor he brings to these complex issues. Steve is passionate about educating people through his website Scamicide.com. Show Notes: [1:16] - Steve has a personal backstory with a Ponzi scam because his father became the victim of one several years ago. His father was an astute businessman and the people involved with it seemed very honest. [1:50] - Steve also became a victim of identity theft himself and then wanted to help others not have the same problem. [2:29] - After WWI, Charles Ponzi came up with a plan to make money. Steve admits that it is very hard to explain and that is the key to a Ponzi scheme. [3:45] - Schemers blamed their victims for falling for the scheme. They claimed that they deserved what happened because they weren’t smart enough. [4:58] - Steve describes how Charles Ponzi used the money from investors and shares why a more recent scheme in 2008 was successful. [5:46] - In the case of Charles Ponzi, law enforcement didn’t bring him down. The media did. [6:29] - Ponzi did spend time in prison and was kicked out of the country. He went back to Italy and actually scammed Mussolini. [8:04] - Ponzi was probably not the first person to scam this way. In Steve’s research, there was an earlier scam by a woman named Sarah Howe in the 1870s. [9:42] - Upon being released from prison, Sarah went back to her old ways and developed the same exact scam. [10:16] - Steve shares the story of Brad Bleidt to illustrate the term “affinity fraud.” Brad was a Mason and other Masonic groups trusted him. [11:01] - Sarah Howe targeted women. Brad Bleidt targeted other Masons. Bernie Madoff targeted mostly other Jewish people. We trust those who are like us. [12:21] - Steve shares a story about how Bernie Madoff was actually found out much earlier and reported multiple times. [14:10] - This is not just an American phenomenon. A massive Ponzi scheme in Romania took down most of the nation’s economy. [14:43] - When you deal with any kind of investment, you want to check out two things. The first thing is the person you’re dealing with. The second thing is to fully understand what you’re investing in. [15:28] - People like Madoff and Bleidt would be an investment advisor and the person who holds the investment. Most of the time, you want your investment advisor and custodian as separate people. [17:13] - Chris asks a new question of the guest and Steve says it is a very important question. Do these schemes start out as frauds to begin with or do they evolve into it? [19:10] - Some schemers don’t start out that way. They need a little bit more money or time and before they know it, they’re in too deep. [20:03] - Steve points out that Bernie Madoff may have been able to get away with his scheme forever if it weren’t for the unprecedented economic issues in 2008. [21:42] - Bernie Madoff was never actually caught. He knew he was about to be caught and turned himself in. Steve shares the interesting facts of the case and where the money wound up. [24:29] - Ultimately, the money invested with Madoff was able to be returned to investors. But this is unusual. Most of the time, the money is dissipated. [25:08] - Ponzi schemers will appear very successful and wealthy when in reality they are dissipating the funds that they get to appear that way. [27:35] - In addition to living lavish lifestyles, some schemers may have issues with gambling. [28:23] - Steve shares the story of a Ponzi schemer in Florida who was a lawyer. He was a fixture of the high life in South Florida. [30:24] - There was a Texas scammer that owned a bank in the Caribbean selling CDs at high rates. Rather than Ponzi, this was similar to Madoff’s approach. [32:01] - Chris and Steve discuss the regulatory organizations that are intended to investigate Ponzi schemes. [34:18] - If you feel like you are a victim of a Ponzi scheme, you need to report it to the SEC or the Federal Trade Commision.  [35:10] - Investing all of your money into one thing is not a good idea, either. The markets go up and down. Diversification as much as possible is helpful. [36:01] - Steve references the recent GameStop stock that appeared to be a “pump and dump” scam but was not. [38:40] - You have to do your homework on investments. No one likes to do the research and the homework, but it can be detrimental if you do not. [39:53] - In reference to the GameStop stock, Steve explains that when investors were “sticking it to the man,” they were impacting hedge funds. [41:05] - Steve is a big believer in investing but clarifies that day trading is not investing, but rather gambling. [43:03] - Chris and Steve sum up the red flags to look for to avoid being a victim of a Ponzi scheme. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. The ISG Imagine Your Future podcast is back after a short break with a new host, Steve Hall. In Steve’s first episode in the driver’s seat he welcomes back former IYF podcast host and colleague Barry Matthews to discuss the subject of open talent and the gig economy. Talent platforms, which allow enterprises to tap into global or distributed talent pools to resource, deliver or ideate solutions, are set to become one of the next big disruptors for business over the coming years. Companies are increasingly accessing skills such as graphic design, automation expertise and software development, to name but a few, through these global talent pools via secure digital platforms. Because of such platforms, the geographical location or even educational background of talent is less relevant than their experience, availability and enthusiasm to work. Contracts tend to be short term and results oriented and suit the increasing number of people operating as freelancers in the gig economy. For these workers, flexibility is the watch word that allows them to work when and where they like. Listen in as Hall and Matthews discuss how the global pandemic has fast-forwarded the development and uptake of these talent platforms and brought them into the mainstream. Matthews predicts that they will play a significant role in the global shift toward freelance work, which, he says, suits the millennial mindset. As a generation of young people very comfortable with the concept of “on demand,” millennials are willing to take responsibility for their personal and professional development, facilitated by talent platforms, on a scale not seen in previous generations. Join this fascinating discussion on how these open technology platforms are shaking up the structure and modus operandi of businesses, helping them leverage the very best talent across the globe.

On this podcast, we confront our Mortality head-on so we’re motivated to live NOW. Maybe you’ve listened to some or even all of the episodes, and you’re getting more and more pumped to get after it. But maybe you’re also not sure where to start. On this episode, you’ll learn how to recapture your dreams to discover your very own, unique starting point.   46? Huh. Not Quite What I Expected. I’m 46, and I feel amazed sometimes that I’m still learning some of life’s most basic lessons. Have you ever felt amazed at that? I guess our amazement at this reality reveals an underlying (and flawed) assumption about what being an “adult” would be like. That at this age, we’d “have it all together.” Well... I’m compelled to admit that I don’t have it all together. Do you? If you do, please let me know, and I’ll be right over to sit at your feet and soak in all your wisdom. Then I’ll ghost-write your autobiography and we’ll both enjoy early retirements because you’ll give me a very generous percentage of the royalties. Then we’ll write another book together about how to “retire” early because we’re suddenly “early retirement experts.” This time, though, my name will be on the cover of the book, too, and we’ll split the royalties 50/50. Then we’ll be on Oprah and sell the rights to the movie. It’ll be great! Oh wait. “Retirement” isn’t actually all that awesome. And fame is a tyrant. Nevermind.   Maturity = Acknowledging Our Immaturity Although we adults may inhabit grown-up bodies, in some ways--just by matter of degree--each of us still has some of the characteristics of immature children. Have you ever met a 40-year-old child? A 57-year-old child? A 78-year-old child? I have, and in some ways, I am that adult-child. Maybe one measure of our maturity as adults is the ability to acknowledge the immaturity we still have in adulthood. That acknowledgment keeps the door open for growth in areas where it’s needed.   A Clarification Before We Proceed There are very definitely ways in which shedding the immaturity of youth is right and good and enables we adults to contribute in the world in the ways that only adults can. It’s good that we learn how not to throw temper tantrums in the cereal aisle of the grocery store, for example. However, I think there are many ways in which shedding “childishness” does us more harm than good. This was impressed upon me when, in response to a women’s casual question on a plane regarding my occupation, I replied that I was a coach. And, among other things, I help people “grow up” more completely--by which I meant that I served as a catalyst for helping people assume full responsibility for themselves and the lives they were leading. Her reaction caught me off-guard, though. She retorted instinctively, “I’ll never grow up!” In that moment, my thinking regarding my role in people’s lives as their coach was instantly rewired. I realized that part of “growing up” is actually recapturing some of the characteristics of youth that can get suppressed, squashed, or neglected as adults. Especially the audacious, unfiltered, unapologetic, un-self-conscious ability to dream.   Dream Like a Kid In a Candy Story If you’re a parent, you’re very familiar with being in a toy store or candy store or watching an ad on TV with your child and having them ask you, “Can I have that, Daddy??!!” or, “Can I have that, Mommy, please please please??!!” Kids don’t first reflect on whether something would be a wise purchase or be good for them. They see something they want, and they just ask for it. Can you remember doing that when you were a kid? When was the last time as an adult that you allowed yourself to want something with abandon, like a child would? To dream a big dream and believe that maybe, just maybe, it’s achievable? To tug on the sleeve of God (or the Universe, or whatever / whomever you appeal to in moments of want and need) and ask, “Can I have that please?? Please??!!” I think the willingness to dream big dreams and ask for big things is one of  the most tragic qualities lost in most adults as they “grow up” and take their place as “adults” in the world. And that loss means that many of the greatest contributions we could make in the world never see the light of day.   Thanks, Steve Harvey! I realized this was true of me recently after listening to Steve Harvey share his rags-to-riches story. (He’s got an amazing story, BTW--check out his motivational stuff online.) A big takeaway for me from his story was how clear Steve was on what he wanted in his youth and how enthusiastically he asked God for it. In Steve’s case, he wanted to be on TV and he wanted to be rich. He dreamed and asked and yearned incessantly and unselfconsciously and with abandon. And today, both of his dreams have come true--beyond all reason and evidence to support that those dreams could actually be realized. Steve is quick to point out that the dream did not become reality just because he dreamed it. He worked and persisted and took advantage of every opportunity that came his way. He was an active, alert participant in bringing his dreams to life. But the dreams came first. Our dreams aren’t the only thing, but they are the first thing.   Resuscitating "Childishness" Somewhere along the way, I became very self-conscious of my wants and dreams and learned that it was somehow wrong to want good things for myself and to dream big dreams. I have some awareness about where that self-consciousness and hesitancy came from. But it’s actually less important that I know where they came from than that--once becoming aware of it--I simply resolve to change it, to resuscitate that bit of “childishness” and give myself permission to invite it back into my adulthood. As Steve Harvey said, our dreams are unique to each of us, and they represent things that don’t yet exist in the world but that we could make a reality. And Einstein is attributed as saying that, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” But we “adults” tend to affirm the opposite and deem ourselves very prudent and sensible for doing so.   Progress Belongs To the Dreamers It’s hard to recall any significant advancement or movement or evolution of humanity that anyone thought was sensible at the time. Rather, a dreamer or two came along and began to assert persistently that what no one else saw or believed was indeed possible. Jesus. Galileo. Our Founding Fathers. Henry Ford. Gandhi. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All “dreamers” in their own way who sowed seeds of human advancement in ways that most others thought absurd at the time.   Will You Dare To Dream Again? I, for one, am daring to dream again. My family and I made “dream boards” together recently for the first time. I have on mine 30 or more big dreams that I’m bringing to God audaciously and without hesitation or self-consciousness. I’m not under the illusion that all of them will absolutely come true just as I’ve dreamed. But I do know that by holding them back self-consciously or trying to right-size or polish them before bringing them into the light, I’m hedging my bets and bringing half-hearted desires into the world. And half-hearted desires yield mediocre results. I want mind-blowing results. I want the best that this life has to offer, and I want to offer my best in this life. I’m done with half-hearted dreaming. I’ll say it again: Our dreams aren’t the only thing, but they are the FIRST thing. There’s a lot of work between our dream and its fulfillment. But there’s no fulfillment without the dream in the first place.   Let Mortality Motivate You Let’s bring our Mortality into the picture. We’re all going to die. It’s just a matter of when and how. It might be at a ripe old age, or it could be later this very day. Will you invite that awareness into your life to motivate you to take action NOW on the dreams that only you can dream? The dreams that exist only in your heart and mind and no one else’s? It doesn’t have to be a Martin Luther King-sized dream. Or a Galileo-sized dream. Or an Elon Musk-sized dream. It’s a you-sized dream, and that’s just right. Don’t take your dreams to the grave. Go after them with everything you’ve got. Some of them might just come true. Others might not. There’s beauty in their fulfillment, and there’s beauty in the pursuit even when they don’t come true. Ladies and gents, “tomorrow never comes.” There is only today. Dare to dream again. And take one step today, no matter how small, toward fulfilling your dreams.   If This Episode Was Useful to You, Check This One Out, Too If this episode was useful to you, check out episode 009, Awaken Your Inner Kid to be the Best Grown-up You Can Be--a Lighthearted and Enlightening Conversation With My 10-Year-Old Son, Macgray. Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, April 26, 2020 Jesus taught that Kingdom of righteousness involves a clearer understanding of God’s law that was much deeper than what was being taught by the religious leaders of His day. In Pastor Steve’s message on Matthew 5:27-32, Jesus expands the definition of the sin of adultery and exposes our great need of a Savior. Offered hope in the face of temptation, sexual brokenness and divorce, we're reminded us that the need for the truth of God’s word to be learned and lived is as great as it ever was. So, how does a comedian transition to a massively successful agency owner....?  "Did you ever hear the one about the wildly successful agency owner?" No? Then stick around as Steve shares his story of growth, including his top 3 tips for being a better agency leader :) How to Win New Agency Business By Building Relationships As agency owners, we always want to win the pitch and land new business. You get in the room with the prospect and you want to tell them you can handle anything. You're willing to do anything and be anything in order to win a pitch. But that never ends well, does it? In Steve's case, he uses humor (remember, he's a former standup comedian!) to his benefit... It's ok to tell a prospect you don't know how to do something. Be the authority in a specific niche - horizontal and/or vertical.  When they ask for something outside of your skillset, be honest or use humor like Steve. For example, he tells prospects that SEO is like "black magic" to him, but what he's really good at it Facebook ads. And, he tells them his agency crushes Facebook ads; there's no one better at Facebook ads. His honesty and a bit of humor builds trust and creates the foundation for a relationship. In fact, it can be the secret to winning the pitch. If you're candid with them, they're going to respect you more for it. We can all smell a sales pitch from a mile away. So can your prospects. When you start bragging, they know you're desperate for the sale. Be truthful, honest, and win business with ideal clients who appreciate who you are. They'll believe you when you tell them what you're actually good at. So, instead of trying to convince clients you're "full service" even though you aren't, think about flipping the script. Be honest with them. And, use that honesty to form a great relationship. #1 Way to Supercharge Digital Agency Growth Want to know the secret to accelerate digital agency growth? You can't do it alone ~ you need a team :) Empowering your team is one of the easiest ways to achieve fast growth. If you hired right, your team is filled with skill and talent. You want is to be the smartest person in the room. Hire people who are smarter and better than you are and reap the benefits of supercharging your agency's growth. Believe me, if I would have been the smartest person at my digital agency, we would have never gotten anywhere! Steve says to give your team some room to grow and dominate projects on their own. And, always put your team ahead of revenue. Clients come-and-go. Good team members don't. It's hard to find people who fit into your culture, understand your vision, and have the passion to create results on their own. Your team is your biggest asset so treat them as such. Being a leader isn't all about you, your agency, and your vision... It's about providing opportunity and a pathway for growth and fulfillment. When you're a great leader that alone can be fulfilling for you. It's a win-win. 3 Tips for Being an Amazing Digital Agency Leader 1. Lead by example. Don't tell your team how to win, show them how. As a digital agency owner, all eyes are on you. Yes, it can be stressful, but leading by example is a good way to empower your team. Recognize your team's strengths and make sure you're continually developing those, rather than focusing on their weaknesses. Let your team shine by showing them how to become even better. 2. Don't try to please everyone. Don't be the people pleaser. You have to know when to say no. And you should always be willing to bring up issues with your team. Try to be friendly and have fun with your team, for sure. But, at the end of the day, you still have to be respected as the leader and not just another guy or gal on the team. 3. Learn how to fire. You should never have to motivate an employee. It's ok to inspire them, but motivation needs to come from within. Share the vision with them to inspire. Show them how they're part of something bigger and how their role creates a residual effect on clients and your clients' clients.  That's inspiring! But if you've got someone who needs constant motivation, then it's probably time to fire them. It's not as hard as it sounds and eliminating dead weight will actually benefit the rest of the team and the overall culture.

Truth You Can Act On: Hire the right people. The key to hiring is to focus on selecting individuals with strong character, attitude, and aptitude. These traits are hard, if not impossible, to teach. Technical skills, on the other hand, can easily be trained. Track goals and progress. Create accountability by implementing a system to break down objectives into measurable steps. In Steve’s system, every leader has a visible metrics board for their team, and each team has unique goals and a 90-day action plan. This action-plan is broken down further into the KPIs that track for individual and team clarity. Adopt a similar system for your organization to ensure everyone is clear on their role and how it fits into the goals of the company. Build employee ownership. Take some time in a quiet place to think about ways you can help employees feel like owners in your organization. After individual reflection, block time to brainstorm ideas with the entire leadership team. Then, actually put your ideas into action and measure the impact regularly. Steve Vallas, the founder of Honey Digital, is quietly but surely making his mark in the Blockchain technology space. A qualified lawyer with a background in business strategy and digital marketing, Steve is developing a reputation as the Blockchain go-to guy in Australia. He has done this through relentless self-education, as well as proactively building connections and facilitating conversations with like-minded people interested in the space. In the wide-ranging chat with Trevor Young, Steve discusses how he's gone from being unknown in the Blockchain sector in Australia, to someone with a growing profile and reputation. Along the way, he has: staged Blockchain APAC 2018, the biggest event of its kind for enterprise in Australia (taking it from idea to fully-blown conference with 45 speakers, in just 10 weeks)been invited by Austrade to attend a major international Blockchain event in Shanghaiappeared on Australia's new Your Money TV channel We talk a lot on Reputation Revolution about the power of owned, earned and social media. In Steve's case, you can add another one - IRL (In Real Life) media.  One of the keys to Steve's ongoing success in this nascent sector is his willingness to attend Blockchain events, no matter how small and grassroots they may be. From professionally run conferences and seminars right through to informal meetups, over the course of a year, Steve has attended well over 100 events, on average of 2-3 per week. He says showing up to so many events and having genuine conversations with people builds familiarity and trust.  Key takeaways: Take the slow but steady route - Steve eschewed 'making a splash', preferring to bide his time, build his knowledge and expertise over a one-and-a-half to two-year period.Show up and be present - while people are out having a good time on a Friday night, Steve is attending another Blockchain event, potentially his third for the week. If the idea is a good one, back yourself in - organising a major conference from go-to-whoa in 10 weeks is a massive, if somewhat crazy, undertaking. But Steve could see the potential, and the risk paid off: running such an event has elevated Steve's standing within Blockchain circles.Build your community before you need it - Steve has been building his online/offline community for years, always adding value, helping people and rarely asking for much in return. When he wanted to generate some heat around Blockchain APAC 2018, he asked his community to help him spread the word on social media. The response was overwhelming, and a critical factor in the overall success of the event. Connect with Steve on Twitter.

Storytelling, Entrepreneurship, and Lessons Learned from Working with Steve Jobs - Guest Anne Wolf Anne is the President & Founder of Wolf Communications.  She is a Chief Marketing Officer by trade, she has carried a bag, starting her career in sales.  Today, she works with entrepreneurs, many times in a Chief Strategy Officer role.   We met Anne through the TLDC18 conference. This week we cover a lot of ground, from the transition between sales and marketing, to Anne's time at Apple, to helping new entrepreneurs.  We hope you enjoy the discussion, and look forward to your feedback. Questions Addressed What is the difference between Brand Story & Authentic Story? What are some of the things a sales rep can do when trying to understand their story, or their customers' story? What was it like working with Steve Jobs? What are some common misperceptions among your students about entrepreneurship? What are some common challenges that you see when working with founders? What are some of the things that people do well when it comes to the exit?  Where do they fail? Key Takeaways Brand Story - sometimes this is confusing - entrepreneurs tend to focus on feature functionality vs why they are doing this. Authentic story - why they decided to focus on this issue, focus on this challenge.  This helps to convey your passion, helps with onboarding, and helps with keeping customers Mistakes happen when you think of the pitch as a focus on feature/functionality.   Investors want to hear the "why" behind it Your Authentic Story takes a lot of transparency, some people fear this.  Your customers are smart. SHaring the good, the bad, the ugly is better than painting the picture that everything is perfect) Reps tend to focus on presentation of the information, they should focus more on listening. Listen to solve problems.  Anne's success in sales was a function of understanding her customer's story Think of brands we admire - you usually can tell a great story - this is what makes them interesting. Start with the Why Go Where they Live? - Why? (pressure, Problems, Location, Put yourself in the customer's shoes) If you can't be on site - you can bridge the gap by using vocabulary, showing empathy, help the client see you as an extension of their team. Be Brutally Honest. When in Doubt, Tell the Truth. Be Trustworthy Changing human behavior is very difficult. Your brand is your promise.  When the thing breaks - is the company there, or do you regret the promise? - Follow the customer through the lifecycle In Steve's mind, Apple was breaking their promise, they were not delivering great technology. Working with Steve helped Anne recognize the value in "doing something great." Decisive Leadership - It is just as important to know what you are not going to do, as it is to know what you are going to do. This led to the "Think Different" Campaign The sales team was focused on product, the business was focused on changing behavior, changing mindset. This was about releasing something new, something different, which ultimately was the iMac. As reps, sometimes we have a tendency to color inside the lines, embrace the rebellious spirit, use your own story as a tool. Entrepreneurship - it's not as easy as you think. Know who the customer is. Know why will they buy. Know how will you fund it. One common challenge is when you have a CEO/Founder who is so married to their technology, that they can't see around the product. (i.e. the product does not do xyz).  The leadership "DOES NOT SEE THE REALITY" There is such a lack of communication across functions. CEO can be surrounded by people who just tell them what they want to hear. Do you feel awkwardly uncomfortable with what you are communicating? If so, that is a good thing. Over-communication can help with commitment.  Staff may feel awkwardly uncomfortable, communication can help overcome this. Great leaders do not create followers, they create other great leaders. Common theme - students, others, executives - you need to build a level of trust, the foundation of trust is based on intention. Exits are taking longer than in the past. ~70% of startups will fail, Crossing the Chasm takes longer than you think it will take, and many organizations will not get there. The ones who exit manage the exit successfully... Don't count their "coin" too early Maintain a maniacal focus Keep the exit as a closely guarded secret When everyone is talking about the IPO, it takes people off task Failure is an accomplishment Leverage mentors Build your personal brand Show Links LinkedIn Twitter Crossing the Chasm Think Different Campaign Call to Action Anne shared her LA County Unified School District story - How can you apply this in your role?  We'd like to hear how you can apply "being there" in the context of your customers. On this episode, Steve Wydler shares his tips on making the most of a buyer’s market and bringing value to your clients. Making Your Dreams Come True With Steve Sims When Steve Sims was sacked as a stockbroker after only three days in the job, it certainly didn’t look like it was the beginning of an extravagant adventure that has seen him arrange a wedding in The Vatican and have dinner at the feet of the statue of Michael Angelo. Steve’s company Bluefish specialises in creating unique experiences for high net-worth clients who want to live life to the full. He literally makes people’s dreams come true… for the right price of course! But Steve’s journey is an important example of how successful someone can be if they are passionate and they understand how to make people happy. The small touches can sometimes make all the difference, and likewise, the ability to think big and tell people something is possible can be very lucrative indeed. Beyond that, there are a multitude of insightful and inspirational points that came up when Steve discussed what made him and his company successful: ** If you fail at something, don’t be ashamed, just have a strong Plan A to dig yourself out of it, but then be open to a Plan B/C/D/E, because sometimes they can be far more fruitful than Plan A.  In Steve’s case, his plan to court high net-worth individuals to encourage a bank to give him a job ended up creating an international concierge business by accident! ** Only work with people you like. ** Successful people don’t grow up and don’t conform.  Think of what a 2-year-old does, i.e. what they want.  They’ll scribble all over the colouring-in book because they know no better, but when they get older they are told to colour within the lines.  Most successful people ignore this kind of conformity, and never really grow up. ** Set up your company and product in such a way that clients do the selling for you.  If you give them more than they pay for, they’ll sell you to others. ** Don’t forget the power of “critical non-essentials” i.e. the things you don’t have to do for clients, but that might just make a difference in the long term if you do them. ** Thought and empathy cannot be automated, so often they have more of an impact than the many other things in business that can be automated. ** Use old-fashioned methods of communication like letters… the open rate is generally better for snail mail than email. ** Or if you’re going to send an email, consider sending an audio voice message as an attachment.  That way, more can be said in less time, and it has a more genuine meaning. ** Keep your word, even if it costs you money in the short term. By Steve’s own admission, he is not an intellectual, but if you are good with human touches and you display the passion and energy to make things happen, you can be clever in business. In this episode of Business Brain Food you will learn: ** The crazy adventures of Steve Sims and Bluefish ** The value of old-fashioned methods of communication ** What can be possible if you subvert the system ** The benefits of sharing your rewards with others Resources mentioned in this episode: ** 20-minute business coaching (http://actioncoachanz.com/meetwithben) ** Blue Fish (http://www.thebluefish.com) ** Ugly Sims (http://www.uglysims.com) ** Facebook (www.facebook.com/businessbrainfood) ** Business Brain Food Facebook Group (www.facebook.com/groups/businessbrainfood) ** Twitter (https://twitter.com/bfewtrell) ** ActionCOACH (http://actioncoachanz.com/itunes) ** ActionCOACH (http://actioncoachanz.com/stitcher)   Steve’s made a business out of following dreams, and that came after his biggest knockback in life. Episode edited by the great J Scott Donnell   Who is Steve Scott? (In his own words from SteveScottSite.com)   I’m a firm believer in the idea of the “Internet Lifestyle.” Money is great and all.  But I think it’s not as important as creating the life that YOU want to live.  The greatest thing about having an affiliate business is the flexibility to do things on YOUR terms.  Don’t believe me?  Well, I just spent seven months traveling through Europe in 2010 (from April to November.)  I literally lived the laptop lifestyle where I bounced from one city to the next.  During this time, each week I averaged 5 hours on my money making businesses and 10 hours writing/marketing this blog. This experience validated all the notions I had about being able to work hard, travel the world, and do what you want to do.   I’m just an ordinary guy who has a relatively normal existence on the Jersey Shore.  I live in a modest two-bedroom apartment on the ocean.  Most of my days are spent working.  And during my free time I like to do fun activities like running, hiking, skiing, surfing, reading and spending time with my loved ones.

Without sales you don't have a business for long. That's true for all businesses in all industries. One person who knows a whole lot about this topic is Cash Flow Diary podcast guest Steve Daar, the super trooper of profit hacking. This business owner, author and entrepreneur started out as a financial advisor for school teachers of grades K through 12. What he learned is that he wasn't really hired to do any favors to the teachers, which outraged Steve enough to open his first business. In Steve's words, it was an impressive failure, but that experience opened him to what he didn't know and what he needed to learn to make another business be a success. He says it become abundantly clear that to be a success in any business he would have to learn all he could about sales and marketing. He says that he continues to learn so he can help more and more people be more successful in their businesses. He found out that no matter how much specialized knowledge one has, other and different knowledge is going to be needed when it comes to running your business profitably. For example, while Steve knew a whole lot about being a financial advisor, he learned it had little to do with marketing his business. He began talking to marketing strategists and reading lots of books on the topic. He found one thought leader and master marketer, Dan Kennedy, to be extremely helpful. He gobbled up everything he could from Kennedy to help him in his business. Then Seve went on to pick the minds of several other marketing and strategy experts. He ended up becoming one himself and now teaches others how to "hack profits" from their sales through smart marketing. Steve talks about how to make tiny tweaks to your online marketing efforts to double or triple your conversion rates, which creates a whole lot more sales month after month. What you'll learn in this insightful interview is that you probably don't have a traffic problem; it's more likely that other things are going on. You are going to want to take notes through this entire interview, because Steve Daar shares a lot of what he's learned about converting traffic to greater numbers of customers and more sales. You are going to learn a great deal in this episode that you can put to immediate use! Get ready.
