Strategy, het bedrijf dat de term HODL jarenlang tot bedrijfsstrategie verhief, heeft een forse koerswijziging aangekondigd. HODL staat in de cryptowereld voor vastberaden vasthouden zonder te verkopen. Tijdens de presentatie van de kwartaalcijfers over Q1 2026 lieten executive chairman Michael Saylor en CEO Phong Le weten dat het bedrijf de verkoop van een deel van zijn bitcoins overweegt. Dat is een ingrijpende omslag. De cijfers boden de context. Strategy boekte een nettoverlies van 12,5 miljard dollar in het eerste kwartaal, grotendeels door een bitcoinkoersdaling van 22 procent. Het bedrijf houdt 818.334 bitcoins aan, gekocht voor een gemiddelde prijs van circa 75.500 dollar per munt. De jaarlijkse dividendverplichtingen bedragen zo'n 1,5 miljard dollar, een last die voelbaar is in een dalende markt. Een eventuele verkoop heeft een specifiek doel: het verhogen van de zogenoemde "bitcoin per share", een maatstaf voor hoeveel bitcoin elk aandeel van Strategy vertegenwoordigt. Saylor vergeleek het bedrijf met een projectontwikkelaar die grond goedkoop koopt en duur verkoopt, en ziet dat als zakelijk handelen. Bovendien deed Strategy dit al eerder: in december 2022 verkocht het 704 bitcoins voor een belastingconstructie, waarna het twee dagen later 810 nieuwe bitcoins terugkocht. Hoeveel bitcoins er nu in de verkoop zouden kunnen gaan, is niet bekendgemaakt. Ondertussen gaan de aankopen gewoon door: op 11 mei maakte Strategy bekend 535 nieuwe bitcoins te hebben gekocht voor zo'n 43 miljoen dollar. Of de markt zich al heeft hersteld van de recente klap, is een open vraag. Bert Slagter van Bitcoin Alpha analyseert de markt van dit moment. Bitcoin steeg de afgelopen week boven de 80.000 dollar en bleef daar de hele week boven, maar Slagter beschouwt dat nog niet als het begin van een bullmarkt. Daarvoor zijn andere signalen nodig, die vooralsnog ontbreken. Dat standpunt klinkt door in het nieuwste kwartaalrapport van vermogensbeheerder ARK Invest, getiteld "After The Fall". Het rapport behandelt Q1 2026, een kwartaal waarin bitcoin 22 procent daalde en drie steunniveaus doorbrak. Een mondiale bodem is historisch gezien pas bevestigd als de koers daalt naar de zogenoemde "realized price" van circa 54.000 dollar, een niveau dat intact is gebleven. Toch zijn er positieve signalen: langetermijnhouders die vastberaden accumuleren, ook wel conviction buyers, verhoogden hun bezit in het kwartaal met 69 procent. Balansen van spot-ETF's voor bitcoin bleven stabiel ondanks de koersdaling, en de economische omstandigheden lijken gunstiger te worden. What up vigilantes? What if you woke up one day to find your Bitcoin stack had doubled? That's the reality coming this August when Paul Sztorc launches the eCash hard fork. But while “free money” sounds great, the real story is a desperate attempt to save Bitcoin from a development culture that has started lying to itself. This isn't a giveaway. It's a rescue mission. The stigma around hard forks has been poisoning the well since the Bitcoin Cash drama. Back then it was a branding war, a fight over who owned the name. It got messy, it got toxic, and suddenly the very idea of forking became taboo. Sztorc isn't playing that game. He's running a different brand entirely (eCash, ecash.com), and he's not pretending to be Bitcoin. He's also not hitting the ground running with empty promises. The Drivechain code has been written, tested, and is runnable today on testnet at layer2labs.com/download. So what is Drivechain? It's a way to give the same 21 million coins access to unlimited optional sidechains. Layer 2s that share the original supply rather than minting new tokens. One sidechain for privacy. One for prediction markets. One for high-throughput payments. All pegged 1:1, all merge-mined back into Layer 1 so the miners get the fee revenue. No new “shitcoins” required to do the things people have been begging Bitcoin to do for a decade. This was already promised, by the way. They pitched it, took the money, and quietly delivered Liquid, a federated multisig dressed up as a sidechain. The kind of “L2” we'd laugh at if Ethereum did it. Sztorc actually did the work they said they would do. Meanwhile, the gatekeeping in Bitcoin Core has gotten absurd. OP_CAT is 13 lines of code. Opt-in, ignorable, reversible. And they still won't merge it. BIP 300 (Drivechain itself) gets accused of “bringing shitcoins to Bitcoin,” which is the literal opposite of what it does. Geniuses like Jeremy Rubin have been pushed out. Lightning, or as Sztorc calls it, “Lightning Not Work,” sucks all the oxygen out of the room while failing to scale. The chief critic situation is even more telling. When Sztorc actually hired Peter Todd to write a paid critique, Todd went on stage at Baltic Honey Badger and claimed there was no code. Meaning he had never bothered to visit drivechain.info, where the download link sits at the top of the page. That's the level of seriousness Bitcoin's chief critics are operating at. The draft PRs to Core itself? Met with harassment, distractions, and irrelevant nonsense. Look at the scoreboard. Blocks are empty. Fees are nothing. Even Michael Saylor, the high priest of HODL, is barely above zero on his lifetime BTC investment, depending on the day (saylortracker.com doesn't lie). Miners are pivoting to AI. Real custody has been replaced by ETF shares and treasury company stock. We traded laser eyes for paper claims. The knee-jerk reaction will be to call eCash a “shitcoin.” That's exactly why Sztorc is giving people four months to think past it. This isn't a bet that eCash moons. It's a hedge against BTC collapsing into stagnation. If the devs keep refusing every upgrade while the network ossifies into a museum exhibit, you're going to need an off-ramp. A note for the maxis already typing. Sztorc is funding the launch by selling some of Satoshi's altruistically mined coins. Not anyone else's BTC, which isn't even possible. Yes, it's controversial. It's also what gives early supporters skin in the game so the fork launches with momentum instead of dying as another well-intentioned ghost chain. Come August, your BTC splits into two. You can sell one for more of the other. You can hold both. You can ignore the whole thing. But don't ignore it without looking first. Good Sunday to you,It seems Iran is planning to turn the Strait of Hormuz into the marine equivalent a toll road, or so at least the Financial Times among others is reporting. Ships wishing to pass through the strait must pay a fee of $1 per barrel of oil.Here's the clincher: the fee must be paid in bitcoin.Why bitcoin? It's the best money for the job.As it is “permissionless”, no government can order the funds to be frozen or seized. No bank can block the transaction. There is no intermediary. It is outside geopolitical control. Transactions can be made remotely and digitally. Settlement is within minutes. Ownership is clear. The network is sufficiently liquid.No other widely used currency or payment system in existence has these qualities. Not the dollar, not the euro, not gold or silver, not stablecoins.Suddenly bitcoin has become “a tool to navigate a global conflict', in the words of bitcoiner Jesse Tevelow.A particular company might not like Iran. Iran might not like the company. Neither might trust the other. The two can still transact. Trade can happen between parties that don't like or trust each other. Trade can also happen outside of politics.Every bitcoiner has known for some time such a moment was coming. It was just a matter of when. If this is enforced, it would mark the first real-world use of bitcoin as neutral settlement infrastructure in a live geopolitical conflict, where traditional systems cannot operate.Obviously this only works if Iran can enforce it, and the Strait is not only Iran's. This is currently only a contingency situation and, if this conflict ends, habits may quickly revert.There is the other possibility that it does work. Indeed it works so well other nations start copying.The BRICS nations, for example, might find bitcoin an extremely useful non-US-dollar currency in which to transact.In which case, this sets a precedent.My view: the world just changed.At the other end of the scale, we have my little lifeAnd the same problem - fiat inadequacy - presents itself though rather more mundane circumstances.I've been travelling through Namibia this past fortnight, on my way to give a speech at the Cirrus Investment Conference.When I arrived at the airport, I couldn't get my card to work in the ATM machine, but I had £200 in cash which I changed - no doubt at some over-priced rate - for local dollars. This was the only cash I had.I've been staying at various lodges across the country, all in the middle of nowhere, and I have had a terrific time, but I've needed money to tip my various guides, lodge staff, drivers and so on, but with no access to cash.The banking system didn't work. The card failed. Cash was finite. The people I wanted to tip couldn't take card payments. We still wanted to transact.So I've been using the opportunity to orange pill the locals. Instead of local dollars (which by the way is pegged to the South African rand), I've got every member of staff to download a wallet onto their phone, and I've tipped them in bitcoin. Everyone so far has been delighted at the arrangement, and the locals now have some money that might appreciate in purchasing power. I've told them to HODL their coins for at least 5 years and then perhaps this little tip might be worth something.In the meantime I've told them to read up on bitcoin - watch vids, listen to podcasts and so on.As I argue in the book the first step on the bitcoin journey is to download a wallet and practice sending and receiving small amounts of money.So you have the same function at two extremes: bitcoin works where other forms of money fall short.Once again I urge you to have some exposure to this extraordinary tech. ETFs are the simplest way - but they are far from permissionless, as anyone dealing with the FCA will tell you. Charlie Morris's BOLD is another option and one I some in my own portfolio.On which note, I heartily endorse Charlie's various newsletters, which you can read here. But the best way to start with bitcoin is to sign up to an exchange and buy twenty quid's worth.Here's a little story for you.About ten years ago, around the time I wrote Bitcoin: the Future of Money?, I was at the Port Eliot festival in Cornwall where the internet signal is bad, or was back then. “Accepting bitcoin” it said on one of the little cafe vans. “What's bitcoin?” a mate standing next to me in the queue said. I told him, sent him a fiver's worth and told him to use it to buy us each a coffee.The bloke selling the coffee couldn't get a proper signal on his phone, other people in the queue were getting impatient and so my mate paid in cash and we both forgot about the bitcoins.Several years later when bitcoin went on one its runs my mate messaged me. “Hey, you remember those bitcoins? Well I got out my old phone, retrieved the wallet, sold them and bought myself a car.”It wasn't a Ferrari or anything like that. Just some second-hand family motor, but even so quite the gain.I doubt those tips will get the Namibian locals a car, but you never know.Why Adam Back is not Satoshi NakamotoFinally, there was a big story in the New York Times this week arguing that cypherpunk coder Adam Back is Satoshi Nakamoto. Author John Carreyrou spent over a year on the story, but I'm afraid - and I've been there - he suffers from a terrible case of Prosecutor's Bias. He has decided who he thinks Satoshi is and then found coincidence after to fits the story.If you've read the book, you'll know Adam Back was a prime candidate, but one that was easy to discount, because he wrote in a different coding language - C - to Satoshi, who wrote in C++. Indeed, Satoshi came to Back for advice on the White Paper, which Back gave him (you can read the email correspondence).
