What if the secret to real learning has nothing to do with cognition, and everything to do with emotion? In this episode of unMASKing with Male Educators, Dr. Maurice J. Elias, Rutgers University professor, psychologist, and one of the nation's leading voices in social-emotional and character development, joins host Ashanti Branch for a powerful conversation about the emotional foundations of learning, teaching, and school culture.Drawing from 45 years at Rutgers and decades of work in schools around the world, Dr. Elias reveals why classrooms must be places of belonging, purpose, inspiration, and shared humanity. Together, he and Ashanti unpack the masks educators wear: the pressure to be the expert, the expectation to appear confident, and the hidden insecurities and self-doubt beneath the surface. They explore how emotions shape motivation, why students crave mattering, and how educators can build the kind of climate where young people feel seen, valued, and capable of greatness. This episode dives into the heart of school culture, why it breaks, how it heals, and what happens when educators lead with compassion, curiosity, and purpose. The emotional mask of the educator: confidence on the outside, insecurity on the insideWhy emotional experiences, not cognition, are the true engine of learningThe crisis of mattering: why kids act out when they can't matter in positive waysHow purpose, identity, and belonging fuel motivation and academic successWhy students must co-create classroom culture and normsThe power of names, stories, and authentic relationships in the classroomWhat happens when teachers feel called to serve, but systems push them outHow school climate either nurtures or destroys learningWhy male educators leave, and why networks of support are essential(0:00) Welcome & introduction (0:59) Dr. Elias on identity, humility & purpose (2:00) The educator's mask: confidence vs. self-doubt(4:00) Ashanti on fear of failure and legacy(6:00) Why students choose negative ways to matter(8:10) Purpose, mattering, and motivation (10:20) Why teachers tie their identity to student success (12:00) Creating school climates people want to be in (13:00) What it takes to build emotionally intelligent classrooms (14:30) Co-constructing classroom norms with students(16:20) Humanizing students: names, stories & connection (17:50) Aspirations, index cards & seeing students' inner worlds (19:00) Why students love meaningful conversations (26:00) The backstory behind greatness: work, purpose, discipline (28:00) Systems issues in education: what schools are getting wrong (29:30) SEL as preparation for democracy (31:30) The emotional labor of teaching (38:10) Why male educators leave the profession(40:00) Networks of support for male teachers(42:30) SEL4CA and a call to communityConnect with Dr. Maurice J. In this powerful episode of Research Renaissance, Arushi Raina and John Chernesky from the Praxis Spinal Cord Institute pull back the curtain on what it really takes to innovate in spinal cord injury—and why the future of neurological care depends on integrating technology, science, and most importantly, lived experience.Rather than treating individuals as patients or passive recipients of care, Praxis centers their entire innovation pipeline around those living with spinal cord injury (SCI), involving them from ideation through market launch. Arushi shares how shifting from product “for” to product “with” the SCI community has accelerated meaningful breakthroughs. John explains why he refuses the label “patient” and instead champions the term Plex – Persons with Lived Experience, a philosophy now driving clinical research, product development, and even investment strategies. From cutting-edge neuromodulation to low-cost wound gels saving lives, this conversation explores how innovation scales not by solving one condition in isolation—but by designing for complexity, translating solutions across adjacent neurological and aging populations, and creating sustainable pathways to market.Key highlights include:♿ Why integrating lived experience from day one leads to better innovation—and better outcomes

In this week's message from Everyday Mission, we see two sides of the early church—radical generosity and sobering deceit. In Acts 4:32–5:11, the Holy Spirit empowers a community marked by grace, unity, and dependence on God, while also revealing the danger of hypocrisy and self-promotion. The gospel calls us to live open-handed lives, trusting that everything we have belongs to Him. When God's Spirit transforms our hearts, generosity becomes more than giving—it becomes worship. For more information about Integrity Church, visit our website, http://liveintegritychurch.orgConnect with us on social media throughout the week to stay up to date on events and things happening at Integrity!Instagram: @integrity_churchFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/liveintegrity/For more information about Integrity Church, visit our website, http://liveintegritychurch.org Connect with us on social media throughout the week to stay up to date on events and things happening at Integrity! Episode Summary: In this heartfelt and expansive episode, Amy Wheeler sits down with renowned author, educator, and activist Susanna Barkataki to discuss her new book Ignite Your Yoga, and the path of yoga leadership grounded in ethics, lineage, and collective care. Susanna shares personal stories from her life, including her upbringing in a bicultural household, her journey through burnout, and her evolving role as a teacher, student, and community leader. Together, they explore how Yogic leadership is born not from charisma or hierarchy, but from a deep commitment to daily sādhanā, self-awareness, and compassionate action.Susanna reflects on what it means to be a steward of the Yogic tradition rather than a consumer of it, and how Ignite Your Yoga is a call to bring yoga off the mat and into community, workplaces, activism, and healing justice movements. Amy and Susanna also talk about grief, aging, navigating burnout, and how letting go is often the first step toward transformation. This episode is a rare glimpse into the real, vulnerable, and luminous layers of yoga teaching and leadership—and what it means to stay true to the roots of yoga in a rapidly changing world.Topics Explored:Stewardship of yoga and how to honor lineage without replicating oppressionHow Ignite Your Yoga differs from Susanna's first book, Embrace Yoga's RootsYoga as collective care and community healingYogic leadership born from daily sādhanā and ethical clarityBurnout, perimenopause, and honoring your prakṛti through life transitionsCross-cultural identity and Susanna's role as a “bridge” between worldsBuddhism, yoga, and holding space for spiritual multiplicityWhy comparing your path to others leads us away from dharmaHow to trust the unfolding even in the darkness of “not knowing”Favorite Quotes from the Episode:“There are many ways—myriad ways—to serve and make a difference in the world. Don't get tripped up on having your activism look like someone else's path.” – Susanna Barkataki“Yogic leadership isn't about perfection. It's about a continual refinement—letting our sādhanā nourish our service, and letting our service nourish our sādhanā.” – Susanna Barkataki“Letting go doesn't mean giving up—it just means letting go of control over how you think it's supposed to look.” – Amy WheelerResources Mentioned:Ignite Your Yoga by Susanna BarkatakiEmbrace Yoga's Roots by Susanna BarkatakiSusanna's upcoming book tour and workshops (details on her website)Connect with Susanna Barkataki:Website: www.susannabarkataki.comInstagram: @susannabarkatakiBook Tour Info: igniteyouryoga.orgConnect with Amy Wheeler & The Yoga Therapy Hour:Website: www.theoptimalstate.comInstagram: @amylwheelerPodcast Archive: Yoga Therapy Hour on Spotify/AppleMUIH Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda:www.MUIH.edu
In today's episode, we're exploring something that affects every single cancer survivor, yet often goes completely unspoken: the state of your nervous system, and how it might be silently shaping your menopause symptoms.I am joined once again by the brilliant Dr Louise Oliver, GP and certified breathing practitioner, whose insights on snoring, mouth breathing and menopause had a huge response when she first appeared on the podcast. This time, the focus shifts deeper — to the autonomic nervous system (ANS), how it's impacted by the loss of oestrogen, and why your breathing patterns may be the key to finding better balance.Together they explore:The two branches of the autonomic nervous system — and why so many survivors feel stuck in "fight or flight"Why oestrogen affects breathing efficiency — and what happens when it's suddenly removed through treatmentHow disrupted breathing might worsen hot flushes, anxiety, night sweats, gut issues, and poor sleepMost importantly, what you can do to feel betterEpisode Highlights:00:00 Intro09:06 Chronic Anxiety and Sympathetic Nervous System12:45 Stress Response and Physical Discomfort14:09 Balancing Autonomic Nervous System26:29 "Check Your Breathing Habits"29:43 Breathing TechniquesMissed our first episode with Dr Louise Oliver?Listen to: Ep 132 – Does the Way You Breathe Make Your Menopause Symptoms Worse? https://podfollow.com/the-menopause-and-cancer-podcast Get your copy of Navigating Menopause After Cancer: https://amzn.eu/d/6HTJ4hU Information from Dr. Oliver: https://www.drlouiseolivertherapeuticlifecoaching.com/post/stress-menopause - Great diagram of the menopausal autonomic nervous system dysfunction model in this blog.https://www.drlouiseolivertherapeuticlifecoaching.com/post/health-and-well-being-jigsaw-puzzleLearn more about our work: menopauseandcancer.orgConnect with us:For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancerJoin our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub
