What does bowling have to do with spiritual life?In this teaching on Psalm 19, John Ortberg explores anxiety, surrender, creation, grace, and the deep human longing for soul rest.Using a surprisingly powerful bowling illustration, John reflects on how most people continue trying to control outcomes long after the “ball” has already left their hands. Psalm 19 offers another way: let go, trust God, delight in creation, and allow your soul to rest. This episode explores:- Why modern people struggle with rest- The connection between anxiety and control- Creation as medicine for the soul- Why the law of God is actually a gift- Soul fragmentation and divided living- How love restores wholenessFeaturing reflections on:- Dallas Willard- Theodore Roosevelt- Martin Luther- Psalm 19Scriptures:-Psalm 19-Matthew 22:37–39-James 2:8#Psalm19 #JohnOrtberg #Prayer #DallasWillard #SoulRest #Anxiety #SpiritualFormation #ChristianFaith #BibleStudy #Psalms
How did Emma's deeply personal, spousal view of Joseph differ from Brigham Young's reverent, disciple-like view of the Prophet? In what ways did both Emma and Brigham remain deeply loyal to Joseph Smith, even though they expressed that loyalty very differently? Our hosts reflect on the contrasting ways Emma Smith and Brigham Young related to Joseph Smith and how those differences contributed to tension after his death. Camrey and Johnny discuss how Emma knew Joseph intimately as his young wife — seeing both his prophetic calling and his human weaknesses — while Brigham knew him primarily as a disciple knows a prophet, showing deep reverence and unwavering loyalty to every revelation Joseph taught. And yet, despite their differences, both Emma and Brigham died calling upon the name of Joseph, each cherishing the Restoration in their own way. The post Becoming Brigham Episode 16: Sweeter than Honey first appeared on The Interpreter Foundation.
In this time of Bible study, we looked at Psalm 119 and saw the all-surpassing power of the Word of God to equip us to live for the glory of God. The Scripture delights God's people so that they love the Word and are equipped to live for the praise of Christ. May we be encouraged to pursue Him!
In today's sermon, Pastor John Perry takes us to the 'law' or instruction of God, given to the people during their journey from Egypt to the land of promise.

The psalmist loved the law of the Lord! It was sweeter than honey to him. Do we love the Scriptures?
Join Pastor Dan for the conclusion of our series and the reasons WHY the Bible is "more valuable than gold" or "sweeter than honey." You'll be encouraged to open your own copy to enjoy!
The Apostle John begins his Gospel with the poetic statement, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." What is this Word? Christian theology teaches us that the Word of God is several things simultaneously. First, and most foundationally, the Word is Jesus Christ. On a secondary level, as a gift given and proceeding from Christ, the Word of God comes to us in the form of the Scriptures - the Bible. As the Psalmist writes in Psalm 119, this gift is: "sweeter than honey." This week we go back to the basics of the Christian faith to examine the sweetness of the gift of the Holy Bible.

The humble bee, though small and silent, teaches profound lessons to the soul that has eyes to see the handiwork of God. Day after day, she leaves her hive in search of nectar, flitting from flower to flower. Each blossom is different--some rich, some poor; some radiant, some plain. And yet, when her work is done, and the nectar has been brought back, processed, and perfected--the result is always the same: sweet, golden honey.By a special God-given instinct, bees gather not only from the ruddy rose, but also from the snow-white lily. They visit every kind of bloom, drawing nectar from all the beauties of the garden, and from this wide variety, they concoct a sweetness altogether unsurpassed. So it is with our blessed Lord Jesus Christ. He is the rare confection of all divine perfections. In Him, all excellencies compounded and commingled in divine harmony. He is the meeting of all sweetnesses, to make one perfect sweet. In Him are mercy and truth, majesty and meekness, justice and grace, glory and humility--each a full perfection, yet all blended without contradiction in the matchless Person of the Son of God.What a picture this is of the providence and grace of God in our own lives! The Lord gathers from every event--joy and sorrow, comfort and affliction, gain and loss--and by the secret working of His Spirit, produces the fruit of righteousness in His redeemed children.Even our bitter trials are made to serve His purpose. "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace." Hebrews 12:11. Like the bee, we are not the authors of the sweetness--but vessels through which God brings it forth.
SWEETER THAN HONEY!In these verses, David draws our hearts to the pure beauty and enduring worth of God's Word. He calls the fear of the Lord clean—unpolluted, undefiled, and lasting forever. Unlike worldly treasures or pleasures that fade, God's truth stands eternal. His rules are not burdens but blessings, not harsh demands but righteous guidance.
Bishop Myron Powell
The Lord offers eternal life to us, and makes abundant life so simple, but somehow we still can feel stuck, lacking in discernment and needing consistency. In Psalm 19, David says the answers are found in the strength of God's Word, which offers 6 traits that refresh our soul and provide strength and stability. He reminds us that the Word is more precious than gold and sweeter than honey. Video of this service is also available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyUThuM31EA&t=4650s
Sometimes my passion for being in the Word starts to wilt a little bit. Chatting with people who love Jesus and reading his word encourages me to see it in a new light, or inspire me to dig in deeper. I've met with Maggie a couple of times in person at conferences and I'm always inspired by her passion for studying the Bible! I Most of what we have talked about is Bible stuff and fashion (one thing listeners should know is Maggie has an amazing sense of style) But she also lives on a farm, how does what you do on your farm remind you of studying the Bible? I think it would be impossible to dive into this topic without touching on your last stage of life too. How did you meet Gretchen and end up working for Well Watered Women? As this season has shifted, how has studying the Bible changed for you? Or has it? What obstacles do you face in reading or studying the Bible? In your study you give 5 ways to respond to the text you've read (believe, act, repent, worship, pray) Does one of those come more naturally? Does one come less? What have you done to strengthen that area? You can find Gretchen Saffles and Maggie Combs' book "Sweeter Than Honey" or follow Maggie on Instagram You can find Elizabeth writing helpful hints on the blog Helping you love Jesus and disciple your kids on Instagram Or get access to the "Bible Study" by signing up with email! Today is day twenty-six of our journey of thirty days through the Book of Psalms. We are on the second half of Psalm 119, the longest chapter in all of scripture. In the previous devotion, we covered 119:1-88. Today, we finish 119 with verses 89-176. We continue with elevating God's Word. Is it sweeter than honey to your soul? Is it a lamp to your feet and a light to your path daily?
Do you think maybe it's time we dispense with the myth of the starving artist? There are more than enough ways to make money in creative industries these days. And not just in applied arts like graphic design or architecture. "Marketability" can be a dirty word for some artists, but for others it's a goal that isn't at odds with expression. Even abstract expressionism. Or as Andy Warhol put it, "The business of art requires strategy and analysis." OK, you're right, that's not Warhol. That's a bit of wisdom from Lafayette artist Lynn Sanders. Lynn is an abstract expressionist artist with a head for business. Before she carved out a career as a painter, she worked as a shopping center executive. That gave her insight into how retailers and consumers think. Once she picked up a brush, she applied that knowledge to her art business. Lynn first sold pieces out of a store she opened in a mall, making works for kids' rooms. She quickly figured out the money was in the rest of the house. Flash forward about 20 years, and Lynn sells pieces through galleries across the South. A lot of Lynn's work is purchased for interior design, and she produces some pieces on commission. Lynn produces about 18 paintings a month and employs a full-time assistant in her Lafayette-area studio. If you work in fashion, the idea that art and consumerism don't mix would seem insane. Clothing designers have long blended expression and marketability, selling the idea that what we wear can be a part of who we are. Nothing makes you stand out quite like a custom hat. If that's something you're looking for, you might turn to Mia Montero, owner of the Montero Hat Company. Mia makes custom, hand stitched hats out of rabbit, nutria and beaver felts. Her hats are show pieces in a southwestern style. And she's made them for some high profile folks: Lauren Daigle and Louisiana First Lady Sharon Landry have Montero hats. Mia got into the business while looking for ways to make a little extra money before moving to Nashville for a career in music. She learned the trade from Lafayette hatter Colby Hebert and struck out on her own. Mia looked at planting roots in Music City, but a surprise offer to work as a worship leader in Lafayette brought her home. Music is Mia's first love and she released her debut record Sweeter Than Honey in 2023. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. The term gospel means “good news,” and the message of salvation found in the Bible is likened to treasure, honey, and a reward. Many see Scripture as limiting to our freedom and even evil. How do we know God's word is as good as He says it is?
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:97-104"What is this?" Lindsey asked her grandma, looking at the metal trays and racks on the kitchen counter."That's honeycomb," Grandma said. "Grandpa took it out of one of our hives earlier.""It doesn't look like honey," Lindsey said doubtfully. Grandma laughed. "Right now, the comb is draining, so if you look under the metal rack, it should look like honey. Now I need to package it up so Grandpa can take it to customers tomorrow.""Can I help?" Lindsey asked."Sure!" Grandma handed her a pair of gloves. "Why don't you put these on, then I'll show you how to do it."When her mom picked her up later that day, Lindsey told her about the honey. "It was so cool, Mom! There was honey left on the trays, and Grandma let me taste some. It was so good--it tasted just like sugar. I got to bring some of it home so you can taste it.""That does sound really cool," Mom agreed. "I can't wait to taste it. Did you know that there's a Bible verse about honey?""There is?" Lindsey asked. "About honey?""Yep. It's in the book of Psalms, and it tells us that God's Word is sweeter than honey." "But the honey was so sweet!" said Lindsey. Mom laughed. "Yes, honey is really sweet, and the Bible is even sweeter than that! God's Word teaches us about Him, and He uses the Bible to talk to us. Through it, He tells us who He is and how much He loves us, and He helps us understand what Jesus did to save us and how we should live as His children. Talking to Him and learning from Him are two reasons it's important to read the Bible.""I like looking at my Bible." Lindsey bit her lip. "But I can't read it yet."Mom smiled. "You'll be able to read it before too long! And listening to the Bible works the same way--that's why Daddy or I read your Bible to you every night before bed.""Can we read the verse about honey tonight?" Lindsey asked.Mom pulled into the driveway. "That sounds perfect." –Kimberly BrokishHow About You?Have you tasted honey? It's very sweet, isn't it? Our Key Verse today tells us there's something even sweeter than honey--God's Word! God's words to us in the Bible are sweeter than anything else. How great is it that God wants to talk to us? Listen to what He has to say by reading the Bible yourself and listening when others read and explain it to you. What is God telling you?Today's Key Verse:How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (NIV) (Psalm 119:103)Today's Key Thought:Reading the Bible is sweet!
