Bible Reading: Romans 12:3-10 On their way to the park one Saturday morning, Maisie and her parents decided to stop at an estate sale. Maisie enjoyed seeing all the things the owners of the place were selling. When they walked into a room that looked like a library, Maisie gasped in delight. "Look! A harp! My music teacher at school has one. She said there aren't many people who know how to play them." Maisie turned to her dad. "Can we buy it? I'd love to learn how to play."Dad pointed to a sign. "See that? It's not for sale." Just then a woman who was supervising the sale walked in. She smiled at Maisie. "I see you like this harp," she said. "Did you notice the different kinds of strings? Some are really thin and others are thick and strong. Some are spiraled and some are grooved, but others are smooth.""They're not all the same color either," said Maisie. "Some are bright red, and others are black or silver or gold.""That's right," said the woman. "This harp belonged to my mother. Now I'm going to take it home so my daughter can learn to play."The next day at church, Maisie looked around at all the different people singing in the sanctuary. "Being in church reminded me of the harp we saw yesterday," she told her parents after the service. "Really?" asked Dad. "How's that?""Well, I noticed when we were singing how many different people there were--people of all ages and races and personalities--but they all worshiped God in harmony together, just like all the different strings on a harp play one beautiful song.""That's a good way to look at it, Maisie," said Mom. "A harp is made up of many strings, and God's church is made up of many people."Dad nodded. "And every string is different--each is designed to sound its own individual note. Yet when each string is in tune with the others, the harp makes beautiful, harmonious music! It's that way with God's church too. The members are all different, but the Holy Spirit unites us through our faith in Jesus. As we show His love to one another and serve and worship God together, we make music that's sweet to God's ears." –Trudy Vander Veen How About You?Do you enjoy the fact that each member of God's church is different? Not everyone will think or act just like you, but that's okay. The important thing is for all of us to stay in tune with the Holy Spirit. That means relying on Him to help us work together and get along, even when we disagree on things. Stay in harmony with other Christians by following the Master Musician--Jesus--as you show others His love.Today's Key Verse:How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity! Bible Reading: Genesis 1:28-31; Colossians 1:15-20Gabe turned his nose away from the fast-food scraps and held them at arm's length. "I think my nose is more sensitive than most. This is disgusting." The sun beat down, and a soft breeze sent wafts of rotten smells up his nostrils. His friend Cassi just shook her head and urged him on. Their church had partnered with the city to orchestrate a park cleanup across the street from their chapel. It's about time, Gabe had thought. He was tired of stepping over litter at the playground.Volunteers spread across the grassy opening armed with gloves and rolls of trash bags; only the lucky ones got plastic reach extenders to jab at the waste. After a couple hours of picking up trash, Gabe looked around at the huge park and wondered if it even made a difference. "Good work, guys!" Gabe and Cassi turned to see the pastor's eldest son, Brent, wheeling a wagon over their way. "Want a bottle of water?" he asked. They nodded vigorously and Brent handed them each a bottle. Gabe guzzled his down in seconds, flattened the bottle, and tossed it into the recycling bag. He groaned. "It smells out here.""Do you know why we're doing this park cleanup?" Brent asked them.Gabe had no idea. With a shrug, Cassie said, "To do something nice for the community, I guess.""Yes, and we're doing it because God gave us this earth as a gift," Brent explained. "God's given us everything out of love for us--including His own Son to save us so we can have a relationship with Him. The earth is a blessing from God; He provides food, water, shelter, clothing, and medicines through its resources. The things of this earth are meant to be a blessing for everyone, so one way we can show others the love of Jesus, who is King over all God's creation, is by making sure the earth is taken care of."Cassi nudged Gabe's shoulder and smiled. "Like making sure the playground is clean for everyone to use." Gabe looked over the playground and imagined how nice it would be for the community if it were all cleaned up. "I guess it would be a good way to love our neighbors." –Zoe Brickner How About You?Do you enjoy being outside in God's beautiful creation? What are some things you have benefited from that come from nature? God made this world for us as an overflow of His endless love--love so great that He gave us His Son, Jesus, who reigns over the earth. One way we can thank God for His gifts and love our neighbors at the same time is by caring for the earth so everyone can enjoy it.Today's Key Verse:The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Bible Reading: Psalm 62:5-8For as long as they could remember, Isla and Parker had lived a block away from the beach. Now they were at the water's edge saying goodbye to their favorite spot. Isla pushed her bare feet into the sand while Parker threw rocks out into the water. Tears trickled down Isla's cheeks as she thought of the moving van parked in front of their house--only it wasn't their house anymore.Isla would always remember the last day of school before spring vacation a few weeks ago. She and Parker had bolted off the school bus, excited about heading to the beach. They'd burst through the front door. "Mom, we're home!" Isla called. The house was silent."Mom?" called Parker. They went into the living room and found Mom and Dad sitting there. Mom looked like she'd been crying. "What's wrong?" asked Isla. That's when her world fell apart."You've probably noticed that your mother and I haven't been able to agree on many things lately," said Dad. "We've decided that it will be better for all of us to live apart."It just kept getting worse. Not only was Dad leaving, but Isla and Parker were moving with their mom to Grandma's. They'd have to find a new school and make all new friends. And there was no beach nearby.Isla stared at the waves crashing against a huge boulder out in the water. "God, this isn't fair," she whispered. As the waves sprayed over the boulder, she remembered a verse she'd learned in church. The Lord is my Rock, she thought. He's always solid and never changes, and He'll always be with me and care for me. Parker finished throwing rocks and came and sat beside Isla. "Don't worry, Isla. Everything will be okay," he said half-heartedly. "I know," replied Isla. "I just remembered that Jesus is a solid, steady Rock to stand on. We may feel like those waves out there being tossed all over the place, but Jesus is like that big boulder. Even if everything else is changing, He's still the same. He cares about what's happening to us and will always be with us. We have to trust Him."–Betty YeiderHow About You?Are you going through a difficult time in your life? A time when you feel hurt and alone and life doesn't seem fair? Remember that Jesus is a close friend, one who is always there for you. He loves you so much He died for you, and He cares about what is happening. When everything around you seems to be falling apart, He is solid and unchanging--a Rock you can trust.Today's Key Verse:Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Bible Reading: Psalm 119:65-73Denver tugged his mother's hand. "Come on, Mom! I want to find out if my science fair project won a ribbon!" "Okay, but help me keep an eye on Darcy," Denver's mom answered as she motioned for his little sister to follow them. When they arrived at the table holding Denver's project, they spotted a red ribbon attached to the board displaying Denver's research. "Second place! Cool!" Denver exclaimed. Then he, his mom, and Darcy walked around the gym looking at other projects. Denver congratulated some of his friends on their ribbons too."Denver, did you give Darcy a piece of gum?" Mom asked."No, I know Darcy's too little for gum.""Well, she's chewing something." The three of them sat down on the gym's bleachers so Mom could ask Darcy about the gum. When they realized Darcy had yanked an old, already-chewed piece of gum from under one of the science fair tables, Denver cried, "Gross!"Darcy began to whimper."Darcy, it's okay," Denver consoled his sister. "Mom, why would she do that?""She's little. She saw something that looked good, so she grabbed it. She doesn't have much experience making wise decisions yet. But she's not the only one who needs help making good choices." Mom smiled and shook her head. Then they returned to admiring the science projects set up in the gym.On the ride home, Denver asked, "Mom, what did you mean about how Darcy's not the only one who needs help making choices?""Well, we all need help choosing what's best sometimes," said Mom."Because not everything that looks good is actually good for us," Denver said. "Like Darcy's gum." "Exactly," Mom replied. "Thankfully, we have a place to turn when we need wisdom. Because you and I trust in Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins and then came back to life so we could have a relationship with God, we can go to our heavenly Father with any need we face, and He'll give us guidance.""Good to know, Mom. I'm going to ask God for guidance about next year's science project--and about keeping Darcy away from old chewing gum." –Allison Wilson Lee How About You?Have you ever faced a decision and needed help? We all have choices in life to make, and some of them are difficult. But as God's children, we can ask God for help and trust Him for wisdom in making decisions. As we look to God's Word, the Bible, for guidance and share our needs with Him, He will help us make wise choices that show others we have a relationship with Jesus. Today's Key Verse:I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. (NIV) (Psalm 32:8)Today's Key Thought:God helps us make wise choices

Matthew 27:45-46 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.  46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”) (NIV) 1. Choose to be real while still being reverent. Matthew 11:28-29  Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (NLT) 1 Peter 5:5-9 - “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. 8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. (NLT) 2. Choose to rest in what you do understand as you wrestle with what you don’t understand yet. Isaiah 55:8-9 - “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (NIV) Psalm 143:1, Lord, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief (NIV) Psalm 143:5 I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done. (NIV) Psalm 119:68 - You are good and do only good. (NLT)
 3. Choose ultimate over immediate.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 - Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (NIV) Romans 8:18 -  I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. (NIV) Romans 8:28 -  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[b] have been called according to his purpose. (NIV) 4. Choose to worship rather than worry. Psalm 142:1-2 I cry aloud to the Lord; I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy. 2 I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble. (NIV) Psalm 22:22-24 - “I will proclaim your name to my brothersand sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people. 23 Praise the Lord, all you who fear him! Honor him, all you descendants of Jacob! Show him reverence, all you descendants of Israel! 24 For he has not ignored or belittled the suffering of the needy. He has not turned his back on them, but has listened to their cries for help.” (NLT) Psalm 34:1-3 - I will praise the Lord no matter what happens. I will constantly speak of his glories and grace.[a] 2 I will boast of all his kindness to me. Let all who are discouraged take heart. 3 Let us praise the Lord together and exalt his name. (TLB) Hebrews 12:28-29. 'Since we are receiving a kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshipping him with holy fear and awe, 29 For our God is a devouring fire.' (NLT)

*This content may be triggering for some listeners.* This week, we’ll hear from Steve Moore, a lifelong music industry professional whose career trajectory took a sharp turn after a life-changing trip to Guatemala. After a storied career managing legendary artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Strait—and serving as CEO of the Country Music Association—a simple journey to help build a school became the spark for a deeper passion, one that led him to establish The Shalom Foundation and open the Moore Pediatric Surgery Center, bringing life-changing medical care to children in need. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Sue Corl, a missionary with over forty years of ministry experience, mostly with Campus Crusade for Christ. Growing up, Sue had to face the physical and emotional challenges of a severe cleft palate through her faith and the unwavering support of her mother. As the founder of Crown of Beauty International, her mission is to aid individuals, families, and communities to experience renewal, transformation, and hope. I was rejectable. I was a freak. And it got to the point where I really put a protective wall around myself that honestly stayed with me throughout my childhood and into my adulthood. It led to me walking away from God because I felt so much shame.” - Sue Corl “We're created in the image of God. Bible Reading: Psalm 139:13-16Everyone in Daphne's family had blond hair except for her. Her hair was bright red. She stood out in every family picture and too often heard comments about being her parents' "red-headed girl." Some people told Daphne her hair was pretty, and others just looked at her strangely, like she didn't belong.Daphne sat on a camp chair at her little brother's soccer game and tried to cover as much of her hair as possible with her bucket hat. She heard someone sit down beside her and glanced over at her grandpa. "How's my little redhead?" he asked.Daphne sighed. "Do you have to call me that?"Grandpa's gray brow lifted. "No, I don't have to. But what's wrong with it?""I'm tired of having red hair." Daphne frowned and sat forward, watching as her brother kicked the ball to his teammate. "I don't like being different from everyone in my family. I wish I had blond hair too.""But then you wouldn't stand out," Grandpa said."Exactly!" Daphne turned to him. "I want to fit in. I want to have blond hair and look like them instead of being the redhead of the family."Grandpa tapped his chin. "I think your grandma felt that way too sometimes.""Grandma?" Daphne asked."She had red hair like yours before it went gray," Grandpa said. "She's where you get it from."Daphne couldn't remember her grandma well because she had passed away when she was young, and she'd never realized she had red hair."I think it's a special thing that God passed on to you," Grandpa said. "I love seeing your red hair. And I know God makes no mistakes. If He wanted you to be just like the rest of your family, He would have made you that way." Grandpa smiled at her. "Sometimes it's hard to be different, but it's also good. God made each of us unique in many ways, not just in our looks. It's good to enjoy and embrace that rather than fight it, knowing God created each of us with care because He loves us.""Okay, I'll try," Daphne said. It felt better knowing her grandma had been a redhead too and to be reminded that God had made her that way. –Bethany AckerHow About You?Do you embrace the unique qualities God has given you? Bible Reading: Psalms 95:1-7; 98:1-9Sam stood silently next to Grandpa and his parents at church. Mom and Dad sang their hearts out. Grandpa tapped his cane to the beat as he sang. But Sam didn't think he had a good voice, so he didn't sing. The next morning Grandpa came over for coffee. While Mom cleaned up breakfast, Sam worked on his homeschool nature study guide. He pointed at a picture of a groundhog peeking out of its burrow. "We have one of these in our yard.""I know," said Grandpa. "I saw it waddling around this morning."Sam looked at his book. "Did you know groundhogs dig holes over twenty feet long? They're also called woodchucks, and their babies are chucklings." Grandpa grinned. "That makes me want to chuckle."Sam continued, "They come out of hibernation before the snow melts, but they can't always predict the end of winter on Groundhog Day like everyone always claims. And listen to this! 'They are fond of singing.' Wouldn't our singing scare them off?"Grandpa stood and motioned for Sam to follow. Outside, Grandpa started singing. A moment later, the groundhog appeared and rose to its hind legs. Grandpa nudged Sam, who cleared his throat and sang along. The groundhog relaxed and began to snuffle in the grass. When they were back inside, Sam said, "It really liked our singing!""Do you know who else likes your singing?" Grandpa asked."Probably not the neighbors," Sam answered."Think about church yesterday," Grandpa suggested."You mean God?"Grandpa nodded. "God tells us to sing His praises because we love Him and want to thank Him for all He's done for us, like creating us and sending His Son to save us."Sam looked at Grandpa. "If Jesus could die on the cross to rescue me, I can at least sing a few songs.""When you sing to God, you're showing the love and joy He has put in your heart," said Grandpa. "No matter what your singing sounds like, He loves it when we sing His praises out of gratitude for who He is and what He's done for us."Sam grinned. "If God enjoys my singing even more than the groundhog did, then I'll sing for Him." –Laura RoeslerHow About You?Do you sing along in church? Or do you think your voice doesn't matter? Bible Reading: Psalm 33:6-9; Romans 6:23; 2 Peter 3:11-13Michael put the last touch of paint on his school project, set the brush down, and stood back to admire it. It had taken weeks of hard work, but he had put together a model farm that he was proud of.It had everything from a cornfield to pigs, cows, and chickens. The farmhouse looked good too, and Michael was excited to show it to his class."Wow, you did great," his dad said when he came to inspect it that evening. Dad bent to take a closer look. "I love all the details." Michael beamed. "Thanks." He explained various parts of the farm and pointed to the things he liked best about it.Dad smiled as he straightened up. "You should be proud of your work.""I am," Michael said."You love it?" Dad asked.Michael nodded enthusiastically. "I put so much work into it.""You know, this reminds me of something," Dad said."What?" Michael asked. His dad was always making lessons out of things.Dad put a hand on his shoulder. "It reminds me of God's creation and His love for it--for us. Think about how He so carefully made the earth and everything in it. It's sort of like how you put effort into the farm.""The earth is much bigger than my tiny farm," Michael said."But it's something you can relate to." Dad pointed at the project. "Whenever you wonder if God really loves you, think about how much love and care went into making this. You wouldn't want anything to destroy it, right?"Michael's eyes widened. "Of course not.""God doesn't want anything to destroy His creation either--the earth or the people He created. But we brought sin into the world, and sin is destructive--the Bible says sin results in death. So God's Son, Jesus, became one of us and died and rose again to save us from sin and death. Everyone who trusts in Him has eternal life, and one day Jesus will get rid of sin and death forever and make everything new again." Dad smiled. "That's how much He loves His creation."Michael looked at his project again. "It's pretty cool to think about it like that.""It is, isn't it?" Dad winked. –Bethany AckerHow About You?Do you realize how much God loves the world He made and everything in it--including you? Jesus gave His life to save you from sin and death. This week, we welcome Mart Green, the founder and CEO of Mardel Christian & Education and of Every Tribe Every Nation, and the Ministry Investment Officer for the Hobby Lobby family of companies founded by his father, David Green. Mart opens up about a pivotal trip he took to Guatemala that showed him the power of God’s love in a highly personal way that he never really had grasped before, and how life’s wounds became a pathway for him toward healing and deeper connection with God and others. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Clarissa and Fiona Moll, a mother/daughter duo navigating the complexities of grief after the unexpected loss of husband and father, Rob. Facing life as a single mother, Clarissa—now a bereavement advocate and author—shares how she and Fiona worked toward a new normal without Rob by their sides. Together, they share how they deal with the pain of loss, and the small steps they’ve taken toward healing. Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6"Well, if that's the way you're going to be, I'll just find someone else to do my science project with!" Will turned and walked away from Torin and Carlos before they had a chance to respond. At dinner, Will was still angry. "Torin and Carlos won't listen to me," he told his dad. "They want to change the whole science project. I don't care what they say. I like the way I planned it.""Sounds like you're having trouble flying in formation," said Dad."Huh?" Will frowned. "What are you talking about?""Remember when we saw the Navy's flying team perform at the air show last week? How far apart were those six jets?""They were really close!" said Will. "I think the announcer said they sometimes were within three feet of each other." He remembered the thrill of watching the shiny blue and yellow jets. "When the leader moved in a certain direction, they all moved that way. If they didn't, they'd be in big trouble.""Right," said Dad. "Flying in formation like that takes real teamwork! But doing a good job on any group project requires teamwork--and that includes your science project. You need to work together as a team.""But they won't listen to me!" said Will."Well, they should listen to your ideas," said Dad. "But you should also listen to theirs. Have you done that? Have you really thought about whose ideas would work the best?"Will sighed. "I guess not. I'll talk to Carlos and Torin and see if they'll still let me work with them." "Good," said Dad. "You know, this reminds me of how Christians need to fly in formation too. Since you know Jesus, you're part of His team of believers--the church. As Christians, we need to work together to help more people know about Jesus. But we can't do that if we're only thinking of ourselves and what we want.""We need to be like Jesus, right?" asked Will."Right," said Dad. "We need to show one another the kind of love He shows us, and that includes listening to each other's ideas and being patient and understanding. When we do that, others will see God's love in us and want to know more about Jesus." –Diane HesselbergHow About You?Do you have a hard time working as part of a team? Do you get upset when others don't agree with your ideas? Remember that God wants Christians to work together in unity. Bible Reading: Psalm 77:7-14Tears started to fill Ashley's eyes as she stared at the movie playing on the TV without really watching it, and she brushed them away. Her dad was having heart surgery tomorrow, and she couldn't get him off her mind. She felt her aunt looking over at her. "Want to help me make some popcorn?" Aunt Laurie asked.Ashley got up and left her sisters and cousins to follow her aunt to the kitchen. "Thinking about your dad?" Aunt Laurie asked.Ashley nodded. "I'm trying not to worry, but it's hard.""It's okay to be scared." Aunt Laurie touched her back. "I know I am."Ashley glanced at her aunt. "You are?" Aunt Laurie nodded. "I've been praying and trying to give my worries to Jesus, but it's not always easy. Sometimes I have to remind myself that even the writers of the book of Psalms questioned God and admitted when they were afraid.""They did?" Ashley asked."Oh yes. Some of the psalmists in the Bible even asked if God would reject them forever." Aunt Laurie pulled a big red bowl from the cupboard. "But they also praised God in the end. They remembered all the amazing things God had done and how He always looked out for them.""And He'll look out for Dad too?" Ashley asked quietly. Her aunt set the bowl down and hugged her. "We need to pray and trust that He will. But even if something bad were to happen, we can still praise God because of the amazing things He has done. Jesus died and rose again to save us, and He promises to get rid of all sin, sickness, and death one day. No matter what happens, we can trust Him because of that.""Will you pray with me right now?" Ashley asked."Of course." Aunt Laurie bowed her head and led her in a prayer asking for healing for her dad and peace for all of them. Ashley felt a bit better when she was done."Want to help me with this popcorn now?" Aunt Laurie asked.Ashley quickly nodded. She still felt scared, but was glad she could trust God to take care of her dad, no matter what happened.–Bethany AckerHow About You?When you feel sad or scared because of something you're going through, do you admit it? Bible Reading: Psalms 121; 139:2-5Joel was used to the sound of sirens, squealing tires, and people's loud voices all through the night. Living in the city, he heard those things all the time. But he wasn't used to the beeping sound he heard now.Turning onto his side in his bed, Joel saw that it was three in the morning. He frowned. It was three, and he had definitely just heard the microwave.Joel got out of bed and crept out to the small kitchen area in the apartment he shared with his mom, stepdad, and newborn brother. He found his mom at the table holding a mug.Mom grimaced. "Did I wake you?" Joel shrugged. "Is Baby Robby awake?"Mom shook her head, smiling as she looked down at the steaming drink in front of her. "Just me."Joel saw the baby monitor on the table and walked over to look at the screen. His new baby brother was asleep in his crib."I was like this when I first brought you home too," Mom said. "Too anxious to sleep because I felt like I needed to be awake to listen for you and watch over you.""He'll cry loudly if he needs you." Joel had witnessed his baby brother doing just that."I know," Mom said. "Deep down, I know that, but I still don't feel comfortable sleeping right now." She stood and put an arm around Joel's shoulders. "It actually makes me think of how God is with us, always watching over us.""He never sleeps," Joel said quietly. "But you need to. Whenever I have trouble sleeping, you tell me that I can rest peacefully because Jesus is with me and I can trust Him to take care of me. You can trust Him to take care of you too--and Baby Robby."Mom chuckled and ruffled Joel's hair. "You're right, sweet boy. I think it's time for us both to get some rest."When Joel returned to his dark bedroom, he stared up toward the ceiling. "You really are like that, aren't You, God? Always up and listening for us?" He smiled. "It feels good to know You're always watching over us."–Emily AckerHow About You?Do your problems and worries ever keep you up at night? Bible Reading: Psalm 13; Isaiah 49:15"How long until we get there?" Jeremy whined for the fourteenth time in the past seventeen minutes. "We'll be at Uncle Jim and Aunt Kate's house in about two more hours," Dad replied. "Let's stop at a rest area soon and stretch our legs." At the rest area, Jeremy tumbled out of the van along with his parents and brothers. The boys began kicking a soccer ball around while Mom and Dad grabbed granola bars, apples, and water bottles from the trunk. As they settled back into the car, Dad said, "Jeremy, your question reminded me of something." "What's that?" Jeremy inquired between juicy bites of apple. "King David," Dad answered. "He asked God that question many times in a row." "Was David on a long road trip too?" Jeremy asked. Dad laughed. "No. He was asking how long God would forget him, how long God would abandon him to his enemies.""But God wouldn't do that," Jeremy said with certainty. "God won't ever leave us or forget about us. The Bible says so." "That's true," Dad said. "But sometimes it feels that way. When life is hard, when someone we love is dying, or when we're sick or lonely, it can feel like we'll be miserable forever. Sometimes it feels like God isn't hearing our prayers--like He doesn't care about us.""Dad and I talk about Psalm 13 quite a bit," Mom added. She turned around to look at Jeremy. "When God didn't answer our prayers to heal your cousin Emma the way we were hoping He would, this psalm encouraged us to talk to Jesus about it--to bring our anger and pain to Him. Talking to God like this doesn't mean we're sinning or not trusting Him correctly. Talking to God like this actually means that we--like David--trust Him enough to keep bringing our questions to Him. Jesus gave His life to make us God's children, and He loves and welcomes us--even when we're angry, even when we ask the same question fourteen times in seventeen minutes." She chuckled and patted Jeremy's knee. "And before you ask," Dad said, grinning as he peeked at Jeremy in the rearview mirror, "we'll get to Uncle Jim and Aunt Kate's in one hour and forty-seven minutes." –Rachel LubowHow About You?Have you ever felt like God doesn't see you or care about you? Bible Reading: Psalms 34:1-3; 146:5-10; Lamentations 3:22-23Maeve curled up on the sofa and looked at her parakeet. Her father had given her the little bird only a short time before he died. "This little guy will keep you company," Dad told her, and that was why Maeve had named him Little Guy.Dad had been gone six months now. Although Maeve was getting used to the emptiness his death had brought to the house and her life, she still missed many things--Dad in his place at the table, the sound of his laugh, the way he used to tap a goodnight signal on her bedroom door. There was a sadness in Mom's eyes too, and Maeve knew she missed Dad a lot.Maeve noticed that her parakeet was perched dejectedly in his little brass cage. She had cleaned the cage and gave him fresh water and seeds, but he hadn't chirped lately. "Mom, what's wrong with Little Guy?" Mom studied the little bird huddled on his perch. "He's molting. Did you notice all the feathers he's lost? Sometimes birds get droopy and stop singing during the molting period. He just needs a little time." Mom put an arm around Maeve. "You and I are a little like that right now. We've pretty much lost our desire to sing too, but Jesus knows how we feel, and He will be with us through this so we can keep singing His praises." "We can still sing even though we're sad?" asked Maeve. "I thought singing and praising God was something you did when you're happy or grateful for something.""It is," Mom said. "But, unlike your parakeet, we can still sing and praise God even when we're sad because Jesus died to save us and is always with us. He is still King over everything, and He knows we miss Dad very much and promises to care for us. Remember the wonderful promises we read from the Bible earlier this week?"Maeve nodded. "They mentioned that God cares for the fatherless--that's me--and widows--that's you." She gently poked a finger into the cage, touching the bird's soft green feathers. "I guess that's something I can sing about, even though I'm sad," she said softly. Little Guy cocked his head and ruffled his feathers. Then he chirped, almost as if he understood.–Phyllis I. The Power of Releasing Hidden Hurts: Joe Dobbins & Aimee Byrd

This week, we'll hear from two influential voices in the Christian community, Joe Dobbins and Aimee Byrd. Joe Dobbins, pastor of Twin Rivers Church in St. Louis, Missouri, and author of Hope After Church Hurt, shares he and his wife's painful experiences with their church and the healing process that followed. His insights provide a roadmap for those struggling with similar wounds, offering steps toward restoring faith and re-engaging with the church. Following Joe's story, our next guest is speaker, blogger, and podcaster Aimee Byrd. Aimee opens up about her lifelong journey of searching for belonging in the church, and how she learned through trials and painful hurts that God wants us to ask questions, and even though we might be scarred by those who twist truths to facilitate how they think we should live, we can find our way back to God and what He says about how we were meant to live.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Levi Lusko Upcoming interview: Adrien Lewis Jesus Calling commemorative edition   Joe Dobbins Twin Rivers Church  Luke 6:28 NIV Romans 8:29 NIV Psalm 103:13 and 14 NIV Hope After Church Hurt   Aimee Byrd Recovering from Biblical Manhood and Womanhood John 12:24 NIV www.aimeebyrd.com The Hope In Our Scars   Interview Quotes: “The season that followed that painful experience was one where we physically attended church, but we withheld our hearts, and the rejection we felt caused us to lose confidence in leaders. It created a distrust for people, and it did cause us to question our place in the community…God is omnipresent, meaning He's everywhere that we are at all times. But just because you are in His presence doesn't mean you have entered His presence. To enter God's presence, meaning to receive Him, your heart has to be open. And pain had caused my heart to close.” - Joe Dobbins “Healing begins by knocking your feelings off the throne of your heart and allowing Jesus to retake His proper place.” - Joe Dobbins  “Forgiveness is never a one-time event. It's a daily exercise, that every time you remember how they hurt you, you're going to have to decide to release it and forgive it again. And eventually what happens is that practice causes the decision in your head to move into the feelings in your heart. And if you'll do it enough, you'll eventually find the pain you've been carrying from rejection is replaced with God's peace.” - Joe Dobbins   “Jesus said, ‘Follow me,' not follow my followers. And I believe that a lot of church hurt is wrapped up when our expectations are not met from a person we esteem, or see that they should be further along in their journey.” - Joe Dobbins  “I think it's interesting today how Christians are really known more for the points they want to make. But yet Jesus was known for asking questions…the church would do well today to remember listening is loving, because often we too quickly jump to trying to tell people what they need to do before we understand the pain they've been through.” - Joe Dobbins  “I still had this vigor to learn more about God and who He was. And I started learning like, Oh, there's a word for that. It's called theology, just the study of who God is. And that fascinated me.” - Aimee Byrd   “I was traveling all over the place, meeting so many different women in the church, and realizing that there are many like me who are struggling as thinking women in the church who want to be more engaged theologically, who want to get into deeper Bible study, to be able to be invested in the whole heart of the church.” - Aimee Byrd   “There were so many things I needed to die to myself in this process of disillusionment and healing. But you look to the left and you look to the right and you realize there's a whole crowded underground of people doing the same thing, and that's what church should be.” - Aimee Byrd  “God wants us to come with our questions.” - Aimee Byrd  “We're here to tell our stories, to hold one another's stories. And as we look at our wounds and the scars as they're healing, they bear testimony to where we've been, what we're going through, where Christ has met us.” - Aimee Byrd ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! The start of a new season and school year allows us to reboot. Even if we no longer have kids in school, it's a chance to turn a page in the calendar and start fresh. But let's be honest…it can also be incredibly overwhelming. This is why Ordering Your Priorities is the perfect study for this time of year. Join Lisa and Laura as they walk us through Ordering Your Priorities, an eight-week Walking with Purpose Bible study. Here's the truth: not all things are urgent, and some good things can remain undone. If the thought of not getting it all done makes your heart race, this series is for you! In today's episode, Lisa and Laura discuss Lesson 1, Talk 1: Building the Good Life, setting the stage for the weeks ahead. Tune in now, and let's start building the good life together! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Matthew 7:24–27: Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Psalm 33:11: The plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations. (NIV) Psalm 32:8: I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Luke 11:28: Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it. Luke 14:28–30: For which of you, deciding to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, “This man began to build, and was not able to finish.” Jeremiah 6:16: Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.” 2 Corinthians 4:18: Because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. In which relationship are you feeling the scrape of the chisel? Are you feeling tempted to pull back and isolate? Invite God to reveal to you if this is actually an opportunity to grow more like Him. Show mentions. St. John Paull II. Man cannot live without love. He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it. This, as has already been said, is why Christ the Redeemer “fully reveals man to himself.” Flourish: The Art of Being Human. Register here. Benjamin Windle, Digital Church in a Lonely World. We all carry brokenness, personality quirks and the ability to make choices that hurt others. However, the potential pain of being in community is not simply an unwanted by-product; it is a key part of the purpose of community. It is the very fact that community costs us something that makes it valuable. Beth Moore: If we only choose to be around those who require virtually nothing hard from us, what will prompt us to change? God often uses others as the chisel to carve true integrity into our rough personalities. A chisel that never scrapes the stone is useless. Bible Reading: Proverbs 21:23; James 3:4-10Ruby and Sage leapt out of their beds. It was the first day of camp! Sage looked at the clock--they still had an entire hour before it was time to leave. She fidgeted and wriggled as though she were about to burst. Ruby, on the other hand, sat patiently at the breakfast bar, one hand wrapped around a mug, the other holding a book. Sage was far too excited to read, and so she began to practice her dance routine instead."And right, two, three, four, and jump, two, three, four, and spin--"Suddenly there was a crash, followed by the gushing of spilt tea. Sage's twirling arm had knocked Ruby's mug over."Sage! You've just spilt tea all down my jeans!" Ruby's face grew red with rage. "My book!" she shrieked. "It's soaking wet! You idiot!" She stormed out of the room.Sage felt hurt. "Well, at least I'm not a boring, head-in-the-clouds bookworm!" she called after her. Soon after, it was time to leave. There was a stony silence as they rode in the car. "Maybe you girls should apologize and start over?" suggested Mum. "Or would you prefer to go off to camp under a cloud?"Sage was the first to speak. "Ruby, I'm so sorry I got your book wet. And I'm sorry for calling you names."Ruby sighed. "I'm sorry too, Sage. I got angry and was really mean."By the time they arrived at camp, the two sisters were chatting and laughing again. As Mum hugged them both goodbye, she pulled a tube of toothpaste out of her pocket. "You almost forgot this!" she said, handing it to Ruby. "You know, your grandpa once told me that unkind words are a bit like toothpaste. They come out very easily--especially when life gives you a squeeze!" "You can say that again!" said Ruby."But the trouble is," Mum continued, "once those mean words are out, you can never put them back in again.""Like toothpaste?" asked Sage. "Exactly," said Mum. "Yet unlike toothpaste, which always comes out when it's squeezed, you can control the words that come out of your mouth. Since you know Jesus, He gives you the power to choose your words out of wisdom and love, even when you feel angry or hurt. So next time you girls disagree--don't forget the toothpaste!"–Angela JelfHow About You?Have you ever said something you regretted? It's so easy to say unkind things when we feel angry or frustrated, isn't it? The Bible tells us that even though the tongue is a very small part of the body, it can do great damage. So remember that if you trust in Jesus, He's put His love in your heart and gives you the power to control what you say. Trust Him to help you keep your tongue in check and choose your words wisely.Today's Key Verse:Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Bible Reading: John 3:16-17; Ephesians 3:14-21Cole couldn't help but grin at the excited look on his younger brother's face. They were on vacation, and Henry was super excited about the roller coaster they were about to ride. Cole was more interested in their planned trip to the beach that evening."There are so many people in line!" Henry's eyes were wide. "Does God love everyone in line?"Their uncle smiled and put a hand on Henry's shoulder. "Everyone.""Does he love everyone at the whole park?""Everyone," their uncle said again. When it came time for them to ride, Cole let Henry and his uncle go together in the row in front of the one he took for himself. He was older than his brother and didn't mind going alone. As he rode, he looked out at all the people at the park. That was a lot of people for God to love. When they parked at the beach that evening, Cole was the first one out of his uncle's truck. He saw the wooden path headed toward the beach and ran down it.It was Cole's first time seeing the ocean, and his eyes widened as he saw just how big it was. "You can't even see across it!"His uncle laughed. "It's a little bigger than my pond, huh?""It's even bigger than the lake you take us to!" Henry ran out into the water."Don't go too far out!" Their uncle jogged after him.Cole stared at the water, right away noticing the peaceful sound of the waves hitting the shore. The ocean was huge. Like nothing he had ever seen before. He thought of all the times he had heard people talk about God's love and compare it to the ocean. The ocean seemed endless, and God's love seemed to be too. It was big enough for God to send His own Son into the world so people could be saved and have eternal life with Jesus.Cole watched his brother splash water toward their uncle and remembered Henry's questions at the amusement park. Could anyone's love really be that massive?"Come on, Cole!" Henry motioned him over.Cole started for the water, and he realized that God was unlike any human. He truly had endless love--and He wanted to share it with everyone.–Emily AckerHow About You?Do you know how much God loves you? He loves you so much that Jesus died for your sins--the wrong things you do--and then rose from the dead so you could have eternal life with Him. That's a lot of love! And God shows His love to you in other ways too, like by comforting you when you're sad and answering your prayers. No one could ever love you as much as God does. Bible Reading: 1 Peter 4:10-11Mario flopped down on his bed. Why had Mom enrolled him in a basketball league? He knew nothing about sports. Mom said it was for exercise and to learn teamwork and make friends. Mario feared that when the other boys found out he had no experience playing basketball, they wouldn't want him on the team.He gazed up at his bedroom ceiling covered with stick-on constellations. He'd rather be in a club that studied the planets, stars, moon, and sun--things he loved. He heaved a long and loud sigh. "What's that all about?" Grandpa stood in his doorway."Nothing." Grandpa wouldn't understand. He'd played college basketball. "Would looking at the real constellations help? It's a clear night," Grandpa said. Mario doubted looking at the stars would make him feel better, but he couldn't say no. When he and his mom moved in with Grandpa after his parents divorced, Grandpa positioned a telescope in the walk-in attic window for him. Once behind the telescope lens, to Mario's surprise, his mood brightened. "There's Orion."Grandpa bent down and squinted into the lens. "Awesome. I'm glad you taught me to appreciate the constellations." He moved the telescope. "The Milky Way is bright tonight."Mario smiled. He had an idea. "Grandpa, would you help me appreciate basketball?"Confused, Grandpa scrunched his face. "Mom enrolled me in a basketball league to learn teamwork and make friends. I thought maybe if you practiced with me, I'd fit in better." "Sure, I'll practice with you." Grandpa tussled Mario's hair then peered through the telescope. "Isn't it nice how God made both the moon and the stars unique and beautiful? They both give off light, but in a different way. Just like people." Grandpa looked at Mario. "God made us all different. We are each one of a kind with interests and talents specific to us. When you feel out of place, remember that God created you and loves you, Mario. He sent Jesus to die for you so you could be His child, and He gave you the gifts you have so you could share His love and goodness with others."Mario thought a minute. "Maybe while I'm learning basketball, I can get others interested in the amazing constellations He created."–Rose Ross ZedikerHow About You?Are your interests different from those of everyone you know? Do you worry about fitting in at school, church, or even in your family? It's normal to sometimes feel this way. When you do, remember God created you special and unique. Bible Reading: Psalm 91Natia and Lexi sat in the grass waiting for the bus. Lexi was quiet this morning; she had something on her mind."What are you thinking about?" Natia asked.Lexi looked up. "I was just thinking about a conversation I had with my mom yesterday. She talked to me about something called a safety network. She seemed pretty serious about it."Natia looked confused. "What's a safety network?""It's a list of five people that I trust, like my mom, my dad, our teacher Mrs. Schenk, my aunt, and my grandma. Those are the people I can talk to about anything. Mom says that if anyone ever says or does anything to me that makes me feel uncomfortable, I can always go talk to the people in my safety network.""That's a good idea!" said Natia. "It's good to have a plan in case anything scary ever happens."Lexi nodded her agreement. "Do you remember last summer when our moms took us to the circus? That man walking the tightrope had a safety net underneath him. That way, even if something scary happened, he knew he'd be safe. Mom said a safety network is kind of like that." Lexi picked some grass and rubbed it between her fingers. "Talking to my mom about it also made me thankful for God's safety net.""What do you mean?" asked Natia."Well, when my mom and I were talking, we read a chapter in the Bible about how God is our protector and that we can always trust Him. Jesus died to save us from the scariest thing of all--eternity without God--and He promises to be with us when scary things happen. Mom said one of the ways He helps us is through people we can trust, like those in our safety network." Lexi reached into her backpack and pulled out her little Bible. "Here, I put a bookmark in it--it's in Psalms."They both stood up when they heard the bus rumbling closer. Lexi turned and waved to her mom, who had been watching them from the porch."You're right, Lexi," Natia said after she read the passage in Lexi's Bible on the way to school. "It makes me feel good knowing God has given me a safety net!" - Emily TenterHow About You?Do you have a safety network--a list of people you can talk to about anything? Having a safety network is very important. If you don't have one, talk to your mom, dad, or other adult you trust about who should be in it. And remember that God is first on your list! Bible Reading: Psalms 97:1-6; 104:31-35; Revelation 1:4-7 Enzo was watching TV when he saw small ripples appear in his glass of juice. A moment later, he felt slight vibrations throughout his body, as though someone had just started a car he was sitting in. "Mom!" Enzo yelled as he ran into the kitchen. "The floor is shaking!""Quick," said Mom, "under the table!" They scooted underneath the large kitchen table and stayed there several minutes until the rumblings deep in the earth below them stopped. Once it was safe, they climbed back out, and Mom flipped on the news. "The earthquake we felt was 4.8 on the Richter scale," she said. "There were some buildings in the area with minor damage, but it wasn't very strong, and no one was hurt." "We learned about the Richter scale in school," said Enzo. "It has numbers between one and ten that measure how strong an earthquake is.""That's right," said Mom. "A 4.8 is considered a light earthquake.""It didn't feel light," said Enzo. "It was scary!" "Yes, earthquakes scare me too," said Mom. "When I feel one, I'm afraid it might damage our house or our town--or worse, hurt you or someone else. But earthquakes also remind me how powerful and holy God is and that He is in control of everything.""How do earthquakes remind you of that?" asked Enzo. "The Bible says that the earth trembles before the Lord," Mom replied. "Even though the huge tectonic plates that make up the earth below us seem incredibly powerful and unpredictable to us, God has complete control over them. There's no scale to measure how powerful He is. He's off the Richter.""So the earth trembles before the Lord, just like I tremble in an earthquake?" asked Enzo.Mom laughed. "Do you mean you tremble because you're scared or because you're shaking along with the ground?"Enzo thought a moment. "Both!" "Earthquakes are powerful forces of nature, but they're nowhere near as powerful as God," said Mom. "He has control over the entire universe, and yet He loves us and sent His Son to die for our sins. One day, the whole world will see His power when Jesus comes again to judge sin, but those who trust in Him have nothing to fear."Enzo smiled. "What a great God." –Courtney LasaterHow About You?Have you ever seen something so powerful it made you afraid? Whatever it was, God had complete control over it--He's more powerful than anything you can imagine. Bible Reading: Psalm 119:97-104"What is this?" Lindsey asked her grandma, looking at the metal trays and racks on the kitchen counter."That's honeycomb," Grandma said. "Grandpa took it out of one of our hives earlier.""It doesn't look like honey," Lindsey said doubtfully. Grandma laughed. "Right now, the comb is draining, so if you look under the metal rack, it should look like honey. Now I need to package it up so Grandpa can take it to customers tomorrow.""Can I help?" Lindsey asked."Sure!" Grandma handed her a pair of gloves. "Why don't you put these on, then I'll show you how to do it."When her mom picked her up later that day, Lindsey told her about the honey. "It was so cool, Mom! There was honey left on the trays, and Grandma let me taste some. It was so good--it tasted just like sugar. I got to bring some of it home so you can taste it.""That does sound really cool," Mom agreed. "I can't wait to taste it. Did you know that there's a Bible verse about honey?""There is?" Lindsey asked. "About honey?""Yep. It's in the book of Psalms, and it tells us that God's Word is sweeter than honey." "But the honey was so sweet!" said Lindsey. Mom laughed. "Yes, honey is really sweet, and the Bible is even sweeter than that! God's Word teaches us about Him, and He uses the Bible to talk to us. Through it, He tells us who He is and how much He loves us, and He helps us understand what Jesus did to save us and how we should live as His children. Talking to Him and learning from Him are two reasons it's important to read the Bible.""I like looking at my Bible." Lindsey bit her lip. "But I can't read it yet."Mom smiled. "You'll be able to read it before too long! And listening to the Bible works the same way--that's why Daddy or I read your Bible to you every night before bed.""Can we read the verse about honey tonight?" That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. Bible Reading: Psalms 63:6-8; 73:23-28"How does she sleep like that?" Lennon asked, staring at her baby sister. Lennon had been having nightmares that just wouldn't stop. "How is she so peaceful?"Mom smiled. "I think Lyric feels safe. I think she's pretty comfortable here with us." She shifted the baby in her arms. "If I put her down, then we might have issues."Lennon wished she could sleep in her mom's arms. She would feel a lot safer then."Do you know who holds you when you sleep?" Mom asked, as if reading her thoughts. Lennon shook her head. "Jesus does," Mom said. "He holds each of those who trust in Him as we rest. He watches over us so we can feel peace, sort of like what I'm doing with little Lyric here."Lennon's face scrunched up. "But I'm not a baby. You really think God holds someone like me?""Someone like you, someone like me." Dad stepped into the room. "God watches over us as we sleep." He moved to Mom and sat beside her, stroking his finger along Lyric's cheek.Lennon looked between her parents. She knew they loved her and would do anything they could to protect her, but she wasn't a baby anymore. She didn't sleep in a crib in their bedroom like Lyric did.Lennon twisted her hair around her finger. "Jesus is with me in my room when you two are across the hall with Lyric?""He is," Mom said."And He's there in the middle of the night when I wake up from a bad dream?" Lennon asked."He is," Dad said. "He loves us so much He died for us, and He is always present with those who have faith in Him. When we feel afraid, we can turn to Him for comfort and peace. And you can still come to us too, you know. We might have a newborn to look after now, but we're still here for you."Lennon nodded. "God looks after a lot of kids, huh?"Dad smiled. "Yes. Many more than we could ever look after." Mom rocked Lyric in her arms. "And He offers each one the peace needed to sleep like a baby. Bible Reading: Psalm 23; 2 Corinthians 1:3-7Mel peeked out of her room to see if Owen's door was still shut. It was. All she saw was the array of homemade stickers plastered over it. The door was closed a lot lately. Mel sighed. She wished Owen would play with her and tease her for the silly-looking people she drew."Dinner's ready!" Mom's voice startled Mel, but she grinned when she smelled her favorite chicken and pasta. At dinner Mel glanced over at Owen's empty chair. "Mom, Owen's been acting strange. He rarely eats with us, and he hasn't wanted to hang out with me." The words tumbled out of her mouth."You're right," Mom said after a sigh. "Owen hasn't been feeling good lately.""Is he sick? Does he need a doctor?""Well, it's his mind, not his body," Mom explained. "His doctor calls it depression. This sort of sickness can make it really hard to do the things you love, or even be with the people you love."Mel was silent for a moment and traced her fork through the pasta sauce. "Is there anything we can do? I feel helpless."Mom put her hands around Mel's. "Even though Owen is hurting, Jesus is with him and wants to comfort him. He died for Owen and understands what he's going through, and He promises to be with him through it. We can remind Owen that he's not alone and that Jesus loves him. I've been sitting with him in his room while he eats dinner. Do you want to bring up his plate tonight?"While Mel dished up some food for her brother, she had an idea. She got to work before knocking on Owen's door. He opened it wearing his basketball hoodie. "I brought dinner, and this." Mel held out the sticker she'd made. It was of her, Mom, and Jesus giving Owen a hug with the words, We love you!Owen laughed, and Mel smiled. "Is that supposed to be me?" he asked, pointing to the middle stick figure. Mel didn't get a chance to respond because Owen pulled her into a hug. Then he stuck her drawing on the inside of his door and said, "This way I can see it. And I'll be reminded that I'm not alone."–Zoe BricknerHow About You?Do you know someone who may be struggling in a way similar to Owen? Maybe they've been acting distant and detached from how they usually are. Or perhaps you've been feeling that way yourself. If you think you or anyone else might be struggling with depression, talk to a family member, teacher, or other trusted adult. Then trust Jesus to be with you in your struggles and to help you love and comfort others.Today's Key Verse:Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Bible Reading: Psalm 66:10-12; Colossians 3:1-14; 1 Peter 1:7Poppy walked into the kitchen just as her mom was coming in from outside. It was a hot day, and her mom's face was bright red and dripping with sweat."Mom!" Poppy laughed. "What have you been doing?"Her mom was breathing heavily, but she smiled. "I went outside a couple hours ago to clean up the lilac bushes. Well, they were in much worse shape than I thought. I just came in for a drink, but there's still lots for me to do.""I'll help!" Poppy said, grabbing her gardening gloves. As the two approached the giant lilac bushes in the yard, Poppy saw the thick vines that wound their way up and over all the bushes, shading them from the sun's light.Mom picked up the hatchet, and the two of them got to work. Mom cut the vines off at the base and Poppy grabbed and pulled the vines from the bush. The vines held so tightly that it often took the both of them pulling until the vine finally released and the lilac bush bounced back to its full height."That was hard," Poppy said once they were finished. She was so tired she could barely lift the glass of iced tea to her lips!"I agree," Mom said. "But you know what? Sometimes when I do yardwork like that, I remember that God is doing the same type of work in my heart. It makes the struggle a bit more bearable.""What do you mean, the same type of work?" Poppy asked.Mom looked thoughtfully at the bushes. "My sinful nature--my desire to do wrong things that go against who I am in Jesus--is a lot like those vines. Fighting against it often feels as hard as ripping those vines out. But, because of Jesus, I have the Holy Spirit, who gives me the power to resist sin and is helping me grow to be more holy--more like Jesus. When I rip out those vines, I'm reminded of the Holy Spirit's work in my life and how grateful I am that I don't have to fight my sinful desires on my own."Poppy looked at the lilac bushes swaying easily in the breeze, thinking over her mom's words. She knew she had that same power in her too.–Emily TenterHow About You?Do you see evidence of the Holy Spirit's work in your life? If you know Jesus as your Savior, God is refining you and making you more like Him. Sometimes it's uncomfortable, and it's impossible to do alone! God gives us the power to leave our sinful ways behind and pursue holiness. Whenever you struggle with sin, remember that God is making you more like Jesus, and trust Him to help you show His love in your life.Today's Key Verse:We went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance. Bible Reading: Colossians 1:9-14; Hebrews 12:1-2Kyla sank down onto the bed, exhausted and upset. "I can't do it.""Patience," her mom said quietly. "You'll get there eventually."Kyle shook her head. "I'm not going to," she said, staring over at the door to her hospital room. "I'm not going to be able to walk, and then I'm not going to be able to leave here. I'll be here forever.""You won't be here forever."The next day, Kyla worked with a therapist again. This time, she walked even less than she had the day before and then was too tired to go on. Tears filled her eyes as she was helped back to her bed."Sweetheart…" Mom pulled her chair close to the bed. "You just need to be patient and keep trying."Kyla shook her head. "I prayed, Mom. I prayed that God would help me do it this time.""I'm sorry that things didn't work out the way you wanted," Mom said. "I prayed that you would stay safe, yet you're in a hospital bed. I prayed that you would recover quickly, but things are going slowly." She sighed. "I think God is using this situation to work on us. On both of us."Kyla frowned. "Why?""Maybe to teach us patience," Mom said. "And to help us remember that Jesus is with us and is still at work even when bad things happen." She reached over and ran her fingers through Kyla's hair. "I remember when you were first learning to walk--my baby trying to grow up. You got so frustrated when you fell. And I got frustrated too. I wanted you to get better balance so I wouldn't have to worry about you falling and hurting yourself. It took a lot of tries, but you got better, and I learned to be patient. Eventually, you got it figured out. I believe you'll do the same this time around.""I wish I could just pray and then be done. Be out of here," Kyla said."I know," Mom said. "But healing takes time. I think we need to keep praying and trust Jesus to help us be patient. He endured death on a cross to give us eternal life, and He'll help us endure every trial we go through." –Emily AckerHow About You?Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like God was trying to teach you patience? Bible Reading: Psalm 27:1-5"Tre, what are you doing out here?" Granddad asked. Tre sat cross-legged on the balcony of his grandparents' apartment. Honking car horns and screeching city buses filled the night air. Tre scrunched his knees to his chest. "Trying not to think about school," he said, looking down. "Aw, Tre, I know it's been hard." Granddad put his hands on Tre's shoulders and sat down with him. "Hey, look at that!" Granddad pointed. "Tre, what do you see?" "Mr. Frank's Fried Chicken sign?" The neon sign across the street gave a red tint to Tre's face.Granddad chuckled. "Well, yes, that's good too. Real good. But look up even higher." Granddad pointed up into the dark sky. Tre stretched his neck up and gave a half smile when he saw the moon, then looked back down."You see it, Tre?" "Yeah." Tre twirled his untied shoelace around his finger. Earlier that day, some kids at school had made fun of him for the shoes he wore. Between struggling with math and now kids making fun of him, he didn't even want to think about school. But at the same time, school was all he could think about. He was worried about what would happen the next day and every day after that.Tre looked up again. The moon was so big and so radiant that not even the city lights or Mr. Frank's Fried Chicken sign could drown out its glow. The moonlight brightened his face. "Tre, who made that moon?" "God." Tre smiled."That's right, and that moon is always there, even if there are clouds or blinding fried chicken signs making it harder for us to see it." Granddad looked up at the moon. "Just like that moon, God is always there too. Even if it's hard to see Him through the stuff you face at school sometimes, Jesus is still there with you, like a light that never goes out. He saved you from the darkness of sin, and He promises to be with you through all the tough stuff."Tre smiled, still looking up at the moon. "So, God's like a light?" Granddad nodded. "A light as bright as Mr. Frank's Fried Chicken sign?" asked Tre.Granddad winked. "Even brighter." –Amanda GottHow About You?What is a tough situation you've faced at school or home? Bible Reading: Psalm 40:1-4; 2 Corinthians 1:3-4Angelo kicked at a stone on the pavement. "Did I tell you that I can't go live with my dad?" he asked his friend Tai. "I have to stay with Mom." Angelo sighed. "Dad always took time to do stuff with me. Y'know--guy stuff. Now I'll only get to be with him every other weekend.""Well, you can still call and text him, can't you?" asked Tai. "You still have a lot to be thankful for."As Tai spoke, Angelo noticed that his eyes were bright. Are those tears in Tai's eyes? he wondered. As he thought about it, he realized he'd never heard Tai talk about his father. "Does your dad live with you?"Tai shook his head. "My dad died," he said softly."Oh! I'm sorry," said Angelo, not sure what else to say.The boys walked quietly for a while. "It's been tough, and I miss Dad a lot," Tai said finally. "But one day, Mom helped me understand how she deals with it. I had this toy guitar I made by stretching rubber bands around a long box. When I strummed them they made different sounds, depending on how tight they were." He paused, and Angelo looked at him curiously. "Some of the rubber bands fit over my box easily," Tai continued, "but others were tight and had to be stretched out thin in order to get around the cardboard. A few even snapped." "What does that have to do with missing your dad and getting along without him?" Angelo asked."Mom pointed out that when I strummed my make-believe guitar, the rubber bands that fit super-tight made different musical sounds than the ones that were looser. She said life is like that too, and when bad things happen, we're stretched like those small rubber bands. We may be hurting, but we can still make music during the hard times of our lives because Jesus is with us. He understands what we're going through because He suffered too. We don't have to give up and snap." Tai looked at his friend. "Mom and I decided to trust Jesus to be with us through the hard parts of our lives. I'll pray that you'll be able to do that too." – Nance E. KeyesHow About You?Have you had hard things happen in your life? For so many, the holidays don't always represent a time of joy, but trigger memories of painful past trauma, or reminders of deep loss. Whether we greet the holidays with anticipation or dread, we can all be a part of helping each other heal during the holidays. Small acts of kindness, beyond traditional Christmas gifts, can have a big impact in spreading love and creating positive change, especially during a time that brings mixed emotions for so many.  Our first guests this week are digital creators Stevie and Sazan Hendrix. They share some tips about how to navigate the holidays, even when they are hard, and how to find hope even when things feel hopeless. Dr. Emily Smith, who is an epidemiologist at Duke University. Bible Reading: Psalm 33:4-12"Come on, Mal," called Bailey. "Mom said we could play in the attic. Let's try on some of the old clothes in the trunks up there."The clatter of feet echoed through the halls as Bailey and Mal climbed the steep steps to the attic of the old house. Soon they had the trunks open and began trying on a variety of clothes their grandmother and mother had saved through the years. They laughed at each other as they paraded back and forth in front of a full-length mirror. "Let's go show Mom and Dad our latest fashions," said Mal.Tipping an old hat to the back of her head, Bailey led the way as they trooped downstairs. Their parents laughed when the girls pranced into the living room."I wore those when I was a teenager," Mom said, pointing to the thick flip-flops on Mal's feet. "And I believe that dress belonged to my grandmother. And Bailey, that old-fashioned hat looks great with that gold purse!""Those styles were very popular at one time," said Dad. "Everyone wanted them--just like everyone wants certain clothing styles today."Mom nodded. "When it comes to styles and trends, people often want the latest thing. That's fine as long as we make good choices about what we wear and don't let clothes take the place of more important things in our lives. We need to remember that our value doesn't come from what we look like or how others see us--it comes from God creating us in His image and sending His Son to die for us.""Right," said Dad. "And you know what? Trends extend to things other than clothes. Popular books, movies, activities, and even ideas come and go, and they're not always good. We need to remember that the world changes its opinions all the time, but God never changes. He is always the same, and the truth He gives us in the Bible will never go out of style. That's why we need to trust Him to guide us and give us wisdom in how we live our lives. Though the world is constantly changing, His love and promises will always stay the same."The girls nodded in agreement. "Come on, Bailey," said Mal. "Let's see what other things we can find in the attic."- Geri WalcottHow About You?Do you like to keep up with the latest fashions? What about trends like what movies or games are popular or even what people believe about certain things? Since the world we live in is always changing, it's important to seek God's wisdom in all you do. Bible Reading: Psalms 42:4-8; 73:21-26"Maria!" Dad called. "Your aunt and uncle will be here soon. Can you come down and help with dinner?"Maria sighed and tossed the book she was reading on the floor. The last thing she wanted to do was help with Thanksgiving dinner. It was their first Thanksgiving without Mom, and it wouldn't be the same, no matter how much food they cooked. When Maria shuffled into the kitchen, Dad smiled at her. "Want to learn how to carve a turkey?" he asked. Maria shrugged, which Dad took to mean yes, she did. After Dad explained what to do, Maria began slicing the turkey, but the knife wouldn't go all the way through. "Dad, this isn't cutting right, it's--it's frozen!" Dad took the knife and tried to make a cut, but it wouldn't go any deeper than a few inches. The middle was still frozen solid. Dad groaned. "I must not have let it thaw long enough.""Why are we even trying to cook a turkey anyway?" bellowed Maria. "Mom's gone, and it won't be the same. I don't care if people are coming, I don't want Thanksgiving!"Maria ran to her room and collapsed onto the bed, sobbing. A few minutes later Dad came in and sat down."Maria, I know it's been hard for you since Mom died. When something terrible like that happens, it can take a long time to get past the anger and sadness. It's okay to feel those things, and it's important to acknowledge our feelings and work through them, because we don't want our hearts to become cold and hard like that turkey." Dad gently brushed a tear from Maria's cheek. "The turkey needed more time to thaw than I realized, but if I'd just left it in the freezer, it never would have thawed at all. Right now your heart needs to thaw, and one way to help it along is to be with your family today. We love you, and Jesus loves you, and He wants to help you heal. One way He brings that healing into your life is through people who can be there for you and share His love with you when you're hurting."Maria lifted her head from the pillow and wiped her eyes. "Okay, Dad. I'll come to Thanksgiving." She smiled. "But we'd better hurry and order some takeout."- Courtney LasaterHow About You?Have you experienced something that's caused you a lot of anger and sadness? Let's go outside and focus on something good."Adelyn stepped out into the yard, smiling when Grandpa had her stop to smell his favorite rosebush. Everything seemed happier away from the TV."Our neighbors brought home a new baby," Grandpa said. "He looks as small as you when you were born." He pointed down the street. "People have been coming and going at their house, bringing them food and gifts."Grandpa pointed out a bed of marigolds. "I always thought those looked like little cheery suns.""They do." Adelyn smiled again."I want you to remember something." Grandpa crouched down to pet the neighbor's dog that had run into their yard. "All that stuff you see on TV, all that dark stuff…even as that's going on, there are good things happening too. We shouldn't just focus on the bad and ignore the good.""But why do they show all that?" asked Adelyn. "Why do you watch it?""I like to know what's going on," Grandpa said. "I want to know how I can pray for others who are hurting. But I don't get so caught up in it that I forget God is still good and that He's always blessing us. We need to see the beauty in the world and not just the bad. We need to remember that Jesus loves us and that He died and rose again to save the world. We need to trust that God is working out His plan to make everything right one day." He waved his arms around. "All of this--nature and the people living around me--they remind me that God is good."-Emily AckerHow About You?Does watching the news ever make you feel sad or afraid? It can be hard to hear about all the bad things going on in the world, but remember there are good things happening too. God loves us so much He sent His Son to die for us, and He is at work in the world. He fills our lives with good things and promises to end sin and suffering forever one day. Remember that He is good and enjoy His blessings all around you.Today's Key Verse:The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. (NIV) (Psalm 145:9)Today's Key Thought:God is good

As an adult, we often think we're incapable of falling into abusive situations or sexual grooming. However, roughly 50,000 people are working toward healing after finding themselves a victim to abusers within the church, doctor offices, therapy offices, jobs, and other places or situations where we often think we're safe.  Amy Nordhues is a survivor and an advocate for other survivors who have been through clergy and therapist abuse. Join Amy as she tells her story to hosts Elisa Morgan and Eryn Adkins during this conversation on God Hears Her.   Notes and Quotes:  “I refer to these traumas like an earthquake; there's the initial quake and there are these smaller, mini quakes that happen for years.” –Amy Nordhues “An ethical therapist will never burden the clients. They will be a blank slate for you when you walk in, and then you leave [your appointment] knowing that they can take care of themselves.” –Amy Nordhues “Suddenly I found myself thinking, ‘God doesn't make abusers', and, ‘God doesn't make evil' . . . so what if God restored my abuser to the person that He made, would I be okay with that person going to heaven?” –Amy Nordhues “Forgiveness is not that you like your abuser now or that you're okay with what happened, but I feel like it's telling God that this burden is too heavy for me and I need you to take it.” –Amy Nordhues I had spent most of my life in darkness, bitterness, and anger. . . . I wasn't going back there. And I like to tell victims, “Don't let your abusers take that [hope] away from you; don't let them take away your faith. Don't let them put you back into that cage of anger and bitterness.” –Amy Nordhues   Verses:  Exodus 14:14 NIV Deuteronomy 32:35 NIV Psalm 37:6 NIV   Links:  Amy's website: www.amynordhues.com Amy's book: https://www.amazon.com/Prayed-Upon-Breaking-Therapist-Abuse God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ God Hears Her email sign-up: https://www.godhearsher.org/sign-upsfmc  Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Amy's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amynordhuesauthor/ Elisa's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisamorganauthor/ Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/   MB01XH4FERIDRGN
