For our legacy of faith series, we will talk about both marriage and singleness in the church. Marriage is such a massive topic that I spent probably the most time praying over it while trying to decide whom to invite to talk to me about it. Then I remembered the conversation I had with Pastor Bob Flayhart on "Recovering from Anger in Parenting" and knew I wanted him to apply that same method for us to Marriage. Marriage is less about finding the "perfect match" and more about trying to "out do one another in love and good works" coupled with "Repent quick and repent often." I can't wait to hear how, functionally, Bob has encouraged couples toward this in his years of ministry! I think sometimes in the church, we think fighting will be solved by figuring out "Who is in charge?" In my experience, if we've gotten to that point, there's probably more going wrong than that. What do you find to be a more helpful way to look at conflict? You call the movement of a believer in grace toward santification a "Gospel Waltz." How does this apply to marriage? As Christians, we want to, as the old saying goes, "Walk the walk not just talk the talk." But along the way there are often "It's not supposed to be this way" moments. The hardest ones are the ones that are entirely out of our control. Looking toward those we can either live in constant anxiety or open our hands to know that God will give us the grace to handle what comes next. If you listen to this podcast, I know you're the kind of woman who wants to dig into her faith more deeply. I want to more-systematically help you do that! I've been working on a brand-new project called the “Legacy of Faith” series. Over the next several episodes, we are going to walk through the life of a woman of faith womb to tomb. Walking out faith is compared in the New Testament as a race. We would never dream of waking up one morning and just going to run a marathon. We would learn about what it takes to train effectively and learn from people who've already runraces. Then we would begin to change our habits, no matter where we were on the “couch to marathon” spectrum. That's what I want to do together the next few weeks. Let's hear from a variety of believers both men and women atdifferent ages and stages to see how they are running the race. I believe this will help strengthen our faith even if their stage is different from our own. This will help us walk out the gospel more effectively. He put his Spirit on them to guide them. Before the law was taught to people and it was a standard to which they were held. Now the law of God was written on their hearts. God's Spirit was in them to whisper conviction of sin, but also to cause his nature to grow from them. We see in Galatians 5:22-23 that what grows from a person who is marked by the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience... etc.At the creation of this new covenant, Jesus sat with his disciples, ate with them, and gave them a new ceremony as a reminder. When they ate together they were to remember his promise. So we eat the Lord's Supper. The other day someone posted something like "If you'll just take the time to get organized, life will be easier." Usually, I would find that to be true and agree with it. When I read the post, I had spent 6 hours the day before cleaning, and looked around me; kid clutter was everywhere. The daily demands of motherhood at face value don't seem like much, but like a steady dripping, it can become overwhelming. I've followed Whitney for a while and know not everything has been easy for her, but it's lovely to watch her turn trials into worship. Early in my 20s, I had a series of wildly unjust things happen. I've since been able to recognize them as really unhealthy behaviors. But during that time Psalm 16 became a favorite. What led you to love 121? -When I became a mom, I thought I would be AMAZING. It's so hard to know how sleep deprivation and very demanding humans will impact you. My mother-in-law told me, "I didn't know how sinful I was until I became a mom." I smiled to myself thinking I had strong self-control. For the first kid and the first couple years I coped okay, but as years ticked on I started to realize exactly how true her statement was. How do you think faith can help a mom navigate the difficult days? I've noticed what I think about changes the way I walk through a day. Are there some things you meditate on that help your mood? When things get hard there is the temptation to stay at home, buckle down, and batten the hatches. Do you find that to be helpful or does it end up making things worse? In David, we find a “type.” God sets him up as king and a good kingdom on earth to show us what he wants to do in Heaven. Under the first half of David's rule, people find peace, prosperity, and justice. But we also see David sin dramatically and the peace is broken. We are left longing for a true and better king!When we understand this promise of “kingdom” to David it allows us to better understand our longing for perfect leadership. But we realize we can't ever find this fulfilled in human form. Earthly leaders will always let us down, but God is the ultimate ruler in our lives.Revelation 21:4 gives us a peek at what the coming kingdom will look like! Jesus will establish the ultimate kingdom. The beautiful thing about the law is that it gives a glimpse of what God values. In it is love, justice, and peace. It leads us to a better relationship with God and one another. But we can't live it perfectly.What Romans shows us is that the law does something even more beautiful for us now. It shows us the gifts we are given in Christ. We are no longer held back by the law alone but empowered into growth by the Holy Spirit. Viewing books this way has made me better balance the selections I'm choosing to read, so they feel like they belong, but also develop empathy! When God came in the cool of the evening he told them their rebellion would bring death, pain, and corruption. Then God killed a lamb (sacrifice), provided clothes to cover them(memorial), and made a promise. One would come who would defeat the power of the serpent. Because of Genesis 3:25, Psalm 91 makes sense. God isn't promising we will never face trouble, but that he will be our ultimate deliverer. He did the work of conquering evil on our behalf and the cost fell on him. He was bruised so we would not be consumed and makes a way for us to be ultimately protected in the coming kingdom. Sometimes my passion for being in the Word starts to wilt a little bit. The past couple of months I've found myself constantly overstimulated. Then I started to notice that every time I had a quiet moment I popped my air pods in to listen to an audio book, or podcast. I started to wonder if I was stealing from myself all of the moments of silence that would naturally have occurred in my day and filled them with noise. I picked up Sarah's newest book and found the words were exactly what I needed. In your opening, you said you've found beauty in the contemplatives, even though that isn't what this book is about. I'm particularly interested in this because it's something that's been coming up in my own circles quite a few times. What have they shown you about quiet, and how is your practice different? What do you “do” while you're quiet? Or do you sit and stare off? As humans, do you think we generally see “Quiet” as a negative or a positive? How has it been both to you? A line at the beginning of your book caught my attention it was something “I began to wonder if at times my smartphone had become my replacement for the Holy Spirit, the ever-present comforter I turned to in times of fear.” How do we begin to rewire these impulses? On Risen Motherhood Laura has talked about how motherhood is joy-filled and hard. The two are so intertwined it can feel a bit like a moment-to-moment rollercoaster. No matter how dark life gets, we give thanks that he has entered our darkness and brought the light of hope. This is why we eat in remembrance of him. The world is broken. Things were not as they should be, and yet Christ entered it to make a way to restore us back to himself. He was broken in the place of the brokenness we encounter, so the hope he is can be ours. So take heart and remember Christ's body broken for you. If an alien were transplanted to earth, it wouldn't take long scrolling any social media platform to realize humans don't want to age. In fact, they will spend a lot of money not to look like time is passing. I'm encouraged by the way my friend Maryanne talks about how we can age in wisdom when the promise of eternal youth rings hollow. This topic is coming at such an amazing time for me. I'm turning 35 this year, and our season has very much shifted. We went from being the youngest wherever we went to now moms with just toddlers asking me what it was like parenting for me when my kids were "little." It's easy to limit how we think of God's healing power. We jump to physical healing and provision. But The Bible shows us times when God healed physically (2 Kings 5:10), emotionally (Psalm 34:18), mentally (Daniel 4:34), and spiritually (Psalm 103:2–3). The daily dishes and sweeping after meals are the work of creating order. I've briefly mentioned before that I had a crisis of faith soon after I had my first baby. I long story short, I threw away my Bible because learning who Jesus really was felt too overwhelming. A few months later God brought Nancy's "Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament" series to my attention. I used that to re-learn what I believed the Bible taught. At the time I wished she had some New Testament resources too. Since then she has written resources on Revelation and now Acts! I thought parenting would be easy. I read all the books looking for the perfect formula and became more and more frustrated that I wasn't being given one. I realized with time each child is so individual that even if someone offered me a formula it wouldn't work. I then entered a phase of overwhelm and fear.
