The Other Autism
EP36: Do Autistic People Lack Empathy?

The Other Autism

Many think that autistic people lack empathy, but do they?Join me as I explore empathy in the context of autism research and the origins of the autistic empathy deficit idea. In this episode, I cover the double empathy problem with help from a friend. How does the double empathy problem explain misunderstandings and communication breakdowns between autistic individuals and neurotypicals? I also talk about how I personally think of empathy (and how my notions of empathy are surprisingly close to the very first usage of the word!).Watch this episode on YouTube. If you'd like to know more about topics discussed in this episode, check out:"A Reflective Guide on the Meaning of Empathy in Autism Research" by Caroline Bollen"Autism and Empathy: What Are the Real Links?" If you open a dictionary and turn the page to the definition for 'cult hero', you'll find Kwesi Appiah at Cambridge United. A half-season loan spell from Crystal Palace that meant so much more during a promotion season that has gone down in folklore as one of United's best and definitely most important campaigns in their history. Despite not appearing at Wembley, it'll never be forgotten how important Kwesi's goals were that helped take us there in the first half of that season. Tom sits down with the man who fans still link with us every transfer window to discuss his memories of that season, his time with the U's, and his international career, amongst a host of other things. Are you not entertained?! A decade since his Russell Crowe impersonation on the sidelines of the Abbey, Dickie Dosh, the legendary United manager who masterminded a promotion-winning season out of non-league after nine long years, sits down with Tom and Jules to discuss that iconic season. How did he build the team, what were his hopes going into the season, how long did the 10 minutes of stoppage time feel at Wembley. As well as going through his memories of 2013/14, we touch on his under recognised playing career and the first year in the Football League with the U's. Sit back and enjoy. In Episode #19 of the Mindful Life Podcast I talk with Author and Kinglake local Melanie Harris-Brady about her book “Ten Years On” which explores her experiences of Black Saturday and beyond. Melanie tells a powerful story of strength and resilience and most notably of gratitude.. “Ten Years On” is such a powerful account of adapting and of rolling with life and mother nature’s punches. A few short days ahead of the 10yr Black Saturday Anniversary, I was lucky enough to sit down and have a bit of a chat with Mel about her book, we laughed and we cried and we shared and compared stories and I learnt that love can indeed grow from loss and trauma and new opportunities and beginnings can emerge **Episode Content Note- Please be advised that the subject and content of todays episode may be distressing for some listeners.
