Episode #51 Mindful Life Podcast. Kid's Mental Health and the Pandemic

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 14, 2020 40:44

In Episode 51 of the Mindful Life Podcast, I talk about the effects of the Covid 19 Pandemic on the mental health and well-being of children and specifically what I am hearing from my client and the kids I deal with in my day to day work. Kids have experienced so much change and uncertainty since the Pandemic hit our country. Their routines have been disrupted and many are feeling isolated and unsettled. Lots of kids are feeling anxious and sleep seems to be the biggest issue for many kids. The way we as adults deal with our own anxiety and fear can also impact how our children see and experience the situation. Its no surprise that kids are struggling, this is a once in 100 year life changing event. In episode 50 of the Mindful Life Podcast, I share my thoughts, feelings and ramblings of my current scattered mindset on Day 1 of the return to Covid-19 Stage 3 Restrictions here in Metropolitan Melbourne. I, like my fellow Melbournians are feeling all the feels. Frustrated, disappointed, anxious and sad. The media is saying we are surrounded by a ring of steal to ensure none of us leave the "Covid Capital" for the next 6wks. Other states are saying we are letting the country down. Needless to say, this is adding to our feelings of disappointment. For the next 40 odd days we are again only allowed to leave our homes for essentials, we must work and study at home, all in an effort to again flatten the curve. All of this concerns me immensely. I worry for people's mental health. I fear that this is more than some people can take. And of course, I know going into lockdown is essential to keep us all safe from the virus, but sometimes home isn't a safe place and being isolated from others is detrimental to mental health Are we sacrificing mental health to save our physical health? For certain, we are living in precarious times and at times, it has been scary but perspective is vital, keeping it real is vital. Fear and anxiety are contagious, more so than any virus. As a global community we are living under a collective consciousness of fear and this can impact our ability to think rationally and it can also impact our ability to cope. In times like this it is not only important, but it is vital that we feel empowered to trust ourselves and our instincts and that we gain perspective and not get lost amongst the fear.  If for any reason, you have found the content of todays podcast triggering or distressing in any way please consider accessing some professional support  (Aust. only) *Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 *Beyond Blue Corona Virus Support Line 1800 512 348 *Lifeline 131114 *1800 Respect 1800 737 732 *Mensline 1300 78 99 78 *Kidshelpline 1800 55 1800  You can find The Mindful Life Podcast on Facebook and Instagram under the handle Mindful Life Podcast. It can also be about opportunity.  Maybe its about an opportunity for us to practice empathy, because after all we, are all in this together.  And maybe, to this pandemic is also an opportunity for us to look at what and who we value in life.  If we can reflect on the many lessons we are learning along the way, it may give us strength and courage to keep going, it may also help to build our resilience. As a Mental Health Worker I am already seeing first hand the flow on effect to peoples lives, the stress of employment loss, financial losses, increases in family violence and the psychological effects of isolation and loss of connection with others. Experts predict that the effects to mental health will be as bad or worse than the impacts of the virus itself. Its a tough time for us all, but we are all in the same boat. In Episode number 34 of the Mindful Life Podcast I share some more insights on my work with kids and a specific success story from my Kids Mindfulness Program. I introduce you to a case example, a child who has experienced much stigma and many difficulties in his short life, due to his diagnosis and his subsequent behaviours. My program has been a game changer for this child. An hour a week for him to just let go and just be, in a chaotic free, safe environment. My program is a space for kids to practice self care, to slow down and to find their calm. But most importantly, it is also a judgment free space and a space of acceptance. This is vital for these so called “difficult” kids who have experienced so much judgment through their lives, whose stories and diagnosis often label them as challenging and as hard to manage. This acceptance and putting judgments aside sends a message of respect and facilitates feelings of belonging, something many of these children unfortunately don’t often experience. What I am seeing in my work with these kids is unique and ground breaking. And I feel so privileged to be sharing the journey with these very special children as they allow the practice of Mindfulness to transform their lives If for any reason, you have found the content of todays podcast triggering or distressing in any way please consider accessing some professional support (Aust only); Telephone Counselling support *Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 *Lifeline 131114 You can find The Mindful Life Podcast on Facebook and Instagram under the handle Mindful Life Podcast. My Kids Mindfulness Program is a combination of CBT, mindfulness and meditation practice and it is targeted at kids aged 6-12yr. It teaches kids how to self soothe, Self regulate emotions and self manage stress. I’ve been running this program at capacity for almost 12mths. This year I’ve had a bit of an influx of kids presenting with ADHD. My program is geared perfectly to help these kids but it’s a challenge for all of us as the very nature of ADHD means that kids with these difficulties struggle to be still, to be calm and to listen. But with persistence, commitment, rules, boundaries, lots of positive reinforcement and encouragement along with of course kindness and compassion I have watched these often incredibly hard to reach children little by little find their calm and their stillness. My program has taught these children to slow down and be present in this moment, which in turn has slowed down their inner world and assisted them to be less reactive and more at peace   Great article on ADHD and Mindfulness  https://www.headspace.com/blog/2017/07/08/meditation-and-adhd/?fbclid=IwAR3B-cL9bXo0Qy1FWj3D--Ye3OrSBB-DxPub9GK3lqb-CSHcKtbA_8PRXiA If for any reason, you have found the content of todays podcast triggering or distressing in any way please consider accessing some professional support (Aust only);      Telephone Counselling support      *Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636      *Lifeline 131114    You can find The Mindful Life Podcast on Facebook and Instagram under the handle Mindful Life Podcast. In episode number 28 of the Mindful Life Podcast. I talk about my deeply personal journey with Premenstual Dysphoria Disorder or PMDD. PMDD is a psychological disorder characterized by a hormonal imbalance that causes severe bouts of depression, agitation and anxiety. The symptoms of PMDD are similar to those of PMS but are severe enough to interfere with work, social activities, and relationships. Little is known about PMDD out there in the health sector, with some doctors having never heard of it or worse still believing it does not exist. But it is real and unmanaged it can be debilitating and it can impact quality of life severely. PMDD kicked my butt for a number of years, knocking the wind out of my sails each month when it arrived. Its taken a long time but I’ve learnt through trial and error how to manage my symptoms and to live with my PMDD. For me its all bout lifestyle choices and minimizing my exposure to stress. And in more recent times, the Buddhist principles of acceptance, impermanence and self compassion along with my mindfulness practice have been a big part of my management strategy and assisted me no end through my PMDD journey. When we are getting help we are forced to look in the mirror, we have no choice but to address our issues. As a therapist, I will support you without judgment and I will be by your side. In Episode #24 of the Mindful Life Podcast, I talk about my recent break up with Facebook. I have made the very scary decision to say goodbye to the social media platform that has over 526 million daily users worldwide. I explore what has prompted my decision to let go of facebook, along with some of my thoughts and insights around why facebook is so popular and why we become so addicted. Humans are all about connection and interaction, so its no surprise that facebook and other social media platforms serve to satisfy this strong need and desire we all have to feel connected and to be part of a community. But in my opinion its so much more than that. Facebook makes us feel good, we love the positive feedback, the approval, and for some of us the ego massage, thanks to all the likes and comments we receive post after post. It’s a great and ongoing boost to our self esteem and our confidence, where in the real world can we have 50 people like or comment on something we have said or done? Nowhere and this is why its so appealing. But is this feedback real, is it authentic and meaningful? Not only are these connections often not real. Our modern day obsession with social media is taking us away from the real world. We are fixated on this alternate world at the expense of our relationships and our work productivity and we are unfortunately losing sight of our priorities and what is important in the real world. Facebook is the ultimate Mindfulness antitheses, the opposite of Mindfulness, an alternate universe where the real world is all but forgotten. In Episode #23 of the Mindful Life Podcast. I  talk about the confronting subject of Family Violence. Today March 8th2019 is International Womens Day.International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, cultural, linguistic, economic or political. On this day I have chosen to use my platform as a woman and as a mental health worker, to put the spotlight on the confronting issue of Family violence and more specifically men’s violence against women. I make no apologies for figuratively raining on todays International Womens Day parade. With more than one woman losing her life every week to male violence, in this so called lucky country, we need to shine that spotlight brightly and talk and keep talking about this very important issue. Today I share my insights and observations on this difficult and often controversial subject. A topic that makes so many uncomfortable. With around a quarter of my clients at any one time being a family violence referral, sometimes perpetrators and sometimes victims, I have learnt a lot and I have got a lot to say. And I hope after listening to my insights, you too will be given some food for thought, which may in turn, mobilise you to speak up and where you can, work to a create a safe and independent future for not only our daughters but for all future generations.   If for any reason, you have found the content of todays podcast triggering or distressing in any way please consider accessing some professional support (Aust only);    **Telephone Counselling support    Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636  Lifeline 131114 **Family Violence Support  1800RESPECT 1800 737 732 Mensline 1300 789978   You can find The Mindful Life Podcast on Facebook and Instagram under the handle Mindful Life Podcast. The field of Alcohol and others drugs is an area that I have worked in on and off for a number of years and I also have a special interest and passion for this very tough work as there is a history of addiction in my family of origin. When we strip it back most of us are addicted to something, something that gives us instant pleasure, relief or we may use it to mask or numb our pain or even to silence our inner demons. But sometimes addictions and their associated behaviours can lead us away from our purpose, addictions can dominate our life and daily functioning and impact our interpersonal relationships. It can be a long hard road for anyone struggling with an addiction and a tough road also for their family and loved one. Its challenging work but important work. This episode shares some of my insights and experiences in this field of practice and how I do the work of working with this very difficult to reach client group. In Episode #21 of the Mindful Life Podcast I present an exert from a Buddhist Dharma talk I attended with visiting Tibetan Buddhist Monk Khenpo Ngawang Dhamchoe (Khenpo). Khenpo is one of the most knowledgeable and resepcted teachers of the practice and philosophy of Tibetan Buddhsim in Australia. A few times a year Khenpo takes a 10hr roadtrip, leaving his own temple and community in Tilba Tilba to open the stunning and disused Buddhist Temple in Kinglake, Melbourne. The Bau Sen Buddha Ru Yi Temple was built over 10yrs ago by Khenpo's close friend Chinese Buddhist the late Master Lin, who sadly passed away in 2007 before the temples completion and opening. The beautiful golden temple in it picturesque location of Kinglake West is now seldom open to the public. During the recent 10 year anniversary of Black Saturday we were lucky enough to have Khenpo attend over 2 weekends to conduct a Black Saturday Memorial Service along with some wonderful Buddhist talks and meditations. Todays episode is Khenpo's  take on stress, the effects of stress to wellbeing and how we can manage stress in the modern world. He highlights that stress is largely a modern day and developed world construct. We need to consider the role that our mind and in particular the desire mind and ego along with materialism play in our stress levels. Our pursuit of happiness via outside sources and things adds to our stress as we will never be fulfilled, our desire mind will always leaves us wanting more. Ultimately we create our stress by feeling unsatisfied with what we already have, by feeling like we don’t have enough and that we need more . If we can exercise awareness and focus on the mindful practices of gratitude, compassion, kindness, impermanence and service to others, as well as living in the present moment, this may in turn leave us feeling worthy, satisfied and fulfilled and we may then begin to see a reduction in our stress levels. A very big thanks to Khenpo and Ann from Drogmi Buddhist Institute for so generously granting me permission to record this talk. I am so grateful to be able to share this wonderful knowledge with my listeners  Khenpo and Drogmi Buddhist Institute's home base is the Kamalashila Tibetan Buddhist Centre at the foot of Mount Gulaga, near Tilba on the far south coast of New South Wales, Australia. Khenpo and his wonderful small team run many programs and activities for the local community and beyond, including retreats, meditation sessions, various Buddhist courses along with children's programs and family fun days. It is a welcoming and wonderfully inclusive environment. There is also onsite accomodation and facilities. I personally attended a week long silent retreat at Kamashila and the location was incredible and staff were so friendly. I also learnt a lot and gained so much from my time at the temple. In Episode #7 of the Mindful Life Podcast, I take listeners through a guided Mindfulness Breathing Meditation. Our Breath is a fantastic resource that can be used as the perfect Mindfulness tool to keep our attention in the present moment. Our breath is alway readily available to us, always ready for us to use as an anchor to secure us to this moment. Mindful breathing and even very basic breathing exercises, such as deep breathing, can also reduce our cortisol levels. Cortisol is the stress hormone that can lead to feelings of overwhelm and at worst anxiety. So sit back, relax and enjoy as I teach you how to use your breath to instil calm and keep you in this moment. This guided meditation was based on and adapted from “Whole Health for Pain and Suffering” VHA / Office of Patient Centered Care & Cultural Transformation **IMPORTANT-Please be advised that Meditation is not for everyone and in some participants, particularly those with a clinical/serious mental health disorder, the practice of meditation may sometimes increase the level of distress or exacerbate symptoms, however, this is rare. In Episode 4 of the Mindful Life Podcast I talk about my special interest and passion for the field of Hypnobirthing and my journey to becoming a Certified Hypnobirthing Childbirth Educator. I explore what Hypnobirthing is all about along with my thoughts on the medicalization of modern childbirth and the impact that medical interventions can have on birth satisfaction and post partum mental health. I also highlight the flip side of the; how a positive birth experience with the help of programs like hypnobirthing can reduce or even prevent medical intervention and in turn promote beneficial outcomes not only for mums mental health but for the mother baby relationship and the family as a whole. This episode is a little controversial, it’s a little left of centre and some may say a little radical, so I'd recommend approaching this episode with an open mind **For more information on Hypnobirthing or to book a class with Mindful Hypnobirthing, check out the links below,  *Hypnobirthing Australia www.hypnobirthingaustralia.com.au  *Mindful Hypnobirthing, find my class on Facebook under the handle Mindful Hypnobirthing  **Studies/information quoted in this episode  *Research on rates of intervention and effectiveness of Hypnobirthing type programs-courtesy of Western Sydney University-Article ABC Aust. *Research on rates of Caesarean sections-courtesy of Dept of Health 2007 *Dickly-Read, Grant "Childbirth Without Fear" 1942 If for any reason, you have found the content of todays podcast triggering or distressing in any way please consider accessing some professional support (Aust only);  Telephone Counselling support  *PANDA (9am-730pm Mon-Fri) 1300 726306 *Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 *Lifeline 131114  You can find The Mindful Life Podcast on Facebook and Instagram under the handle Mindful Life Podcast.  To collaborate or make contact, please email mindfullifepodcast@gmail.com
