In this episode I discuss how the covenant God made with Israel in the Old Testament was a form of an ancient Near Eastern suzerain-vassal treaty. Building from the fantastic work of Sandra Richter's ‘Epic of Eden' book, a suzerain vassal treaty is one in which a king or imperial power, the suzerain, makes a treaty with a lesser kingdom or people, the vassal. They are asymmetrical in the sense that the suzerain clearly holds the power but also reciprocal in that both parties are contractually obligated to one another. Generally, the vassal offers loyalty and taxes to the suzerain while the suzerain grants military protection in peace. Seen in this light, the covenant God makes with Israel depicts him as the rightful king, and in the climax of the Pentateuch, Deuteronomy 27-32, the blessings and curses of covenant faithfulness are laid out clearly. If vassal Israel honors suzerain YHWH by obeying His Law, God will bless Israel, keep them safe and well-fed in the land, protect them from outsiders, and allow them to be a light to the pagan nations. If Israel breaks covenant, God will withhold his protection. This logic, found already in the giving of the Decalogue in Exodus 19-24 and Leviticus 26, can be understood through the framework of suzerain-vassal treaty, depicting God as the true king. For Christians seeking to derive political principles from the Old Testament, this is one important aspect of ancient thought to consider.  Media Referenced:Epic of Eden: https://a.co/d/0hZfe5ZZDru Johnson on OT Politics: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-263-the-torah-the-old-testament-and-christian-politics-with-dru-johnson/ The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. Send us Fan MailWhat on earth are we to do with the troubling passages we come across in scripture? The Old Testament is especially rife with narratives and sentences that can make God sound cruel and unloving at times. I asked Dr. Sandra Richter, the Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA to discuss how sincere biblical readers can approach difficult passages with openness, curiosity, and faithfulness. DR. SANDRA RICHTER is the Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. She holds a Master's Degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and her PhD in Hebrew Bible from Harvard University's Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Department. She has taught at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wesley Biblical Seminary, and Wheaton College, and is a veteran of many years of leading student groups in field archaeology and historical geography in Israel. Her ambition? To make the real people and places of the Old Testament come alive for her students. She is recognized in the Church for her book, The Epic of Eden: A Christian Entry into the Old Testament (IVP Academic), and the Epic of Eden adult Bible Study series that has grown from that project. In the academy, she is known for her work in Deuteronomy and the Deuteronomistic History and the role of Mt. Ebal in the history of Israelite religion. She is also deeply invested in environmental theology (see Stewards of Eden), often addressing both lay and academic audiences on the topic. Her current research involves a forthcoming commentary on Deuteronomy with Eerdmans, a textbook for the introduction of the Old Testament with Zondervan, and a children's book on environmental theology. She is married to Steven Tsoukalas and has two (perfect) college-aged daughters. Thanks for listening to the Embodied Holiness Podcast.  We invite you to join the community on Facebook and Instagram @embodiedholiness. Embodied Holiness is a ministry of Parkway Heights United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, MS.

I've had the privilege of knowing Dr. Sandra Richter not just as a respected Old Testament scholar, but as a thoughtful mentor and deeply generous human being. Sandy has an extraordinary gift for bringing the ancient world of Scripture into sharp, living color. Whether in the classroom or in conversation, she has a way of making the Hebrew Bible feel cohesive, compelling, and profoundly relevant. Her work—especially in The Epic of Eden—reflects what I so appreciate about her: intellectual rigor paired with a pastoral heart. She cares just as much about forming people as she does about informing them. Having taught at places like Westmont College and Asbury Theological Seminary, she's shaped countless students, but what stands out to me is her humility and authenticity. Sandy doesn't just teach the story of Scripture—she lives it with integrity, curiosity, and deep faith.

Are the Bible’s perspectives on women outdated and misogynistic, or are they, in fact, revolutionary? In this eye-opening episode, Catherine sits down with Dr. Sandra Richter, a renowned biblical scholar from Westmont College. With decades of research and a passion for making scripture accessible to all, Dr. Richter unpacks the ways the Bible challenges cultural norms and uplifts the status of women from its very first pages. Together, Catherine and Dr. Richter explore: Radical Equality in Genesis 1: How the creation narrative establishes men and women as equally created in the image of God, setting a profound precedent for dignity and value. Cultural Critique in Genesis 2: What does it mean for a man to leave his family and cleave to his wife? Dr. Richter reveals how this challenges patriarchal norms of ancient cultures. Normative Texts vs. Situational Ethics: Understanding the difference between universal spiritual principles and context-specific instructions is key to navigating scripture’s teachings on women. Women as Prophets: From Miriam in the Old Testament to Anna in the New Testament, women played vital and often underappreciated prophetic roles in biblical history. Addressing Cultural Context:The conversation also highlights the impact of Hellenistic and Jewish traditions on attitudes toward women in New Testament times: Rabbi Eliezer’s shocking statement: “If any man gives his daughter a knowledge of the Law, it is as though he taught her lechery.” The Jerusalem Talmud’s severe stance: “Let the words of Torah be burned up, but let them not be delivered to women.” Josephus’s commentary: Jewish law regarded women as “inferior to their husbands in all things.” The Berakhot’s daily prayer: Jewish men would thank God for not being born a gentile, a woman, or a slave—language reflective of broader Greek cultural influences. Dr. Richter provides essential historical and theological insights, helping us see how the Bible subverts cultural norms and offers a radical perspective on women’s worth and roles. Why This Matters for Parents:In a world where gender roles and equality are hotly debated, understanding the Bible’s revolutionary view of women can profoundly shape how we teach and guide our children. This episode equips parents with a scriptural foundation to affirm the dignity, value, and purpose of every family member—mothers, daughters, sons, and fathers alike. In this episode I'm talking to Dr. Sandra Richter, a professor at Westmont College and expert in biblical studies, particularly the Old Testament.  Dr. Richter dives into her journey in ministry, her focus on studying figures like Deborah from the book of Judges, and the significance of understanding the Old Testament to fully grasp the New Testament.  We're talking about uncommon courage, women's leadership, and the cultural complexities of scripture. This episode is packed with insights on how biblical teachings remain relevant today and practical ways to deepen your understanding of scripture. Join us for this conversation and learn about: Navigating Ministry as a Woman Leader: The journey of stepping into ministry roles can be challenging, especially when cultural norms resist women in leadership. Embracing one's calling with courage is essential. Why the Old Testament Matters: Understanding the Old Testament offers essential context for fully grasping the New Testament, much like reading the early chapters of a story before the final ones. Lessons from Deborah's Leadership: Deborah's integrity, courage, and leadership in a patriarchal society provide a model for stepping into God-given roles despite opposition. The Meaning Behind the Number 12: The number 12 carries symbolic significance throughout the Bible, representing leadership and structure—like the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 judges in the book of Judges. The Impact of Studying Hebrew: Reading scripture in its original language provides deeper insights, unlocking meaning that can sometimes be lost in translation. __________________________________________________________   Ready for more? The Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Bible and the final book of the Pentateuch, is a book about the precipice of transition. The Israelites have been wandering the desert for decades, seemingly marching towards the Promised Land but wondering if and when they would ever make it. Now they are at the doorstep, they can see the promise of God before them, but Moses knows he will not be the one leading them from that point on. Moses, the prophet and leader of Israel, has final words for this people of God – and that is the book of Deuteronomy. It's a look at Moses' heart for Israel, at God's heart for his people. It's a call to choose the Lord – Moses can no longer choose God for them. Deuteronomy is a wonderful book and to help navigate it today is Dr. Sandra Richter. Dr. Richter is the Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies as Westmont whose books include The Epic of Eden, and an upcoming commentary on Deuteronomy. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Deborah, a prominent figure in the book of Judges, challenges the perception that women are only in the text because there are no good men available. In a male-dominated society, Deborah's leadership and influence as a judge for over 40 years is exceptional. She is one of the few judges in the Old Testament who is also titled as a prophet, highlighting her significant role in shaping the nation of Israel. Deborah's title as a mother in Israel further emphasizes the importance of motherhood, a role often marginalized in society. In this conversation, Sandy Richter discusses the character of Deborah in the book of Judges and her role as a prophet and judge in ancient Israel. Sandy highlights the significance of Deborah's leadership and the connections between her ministry and that of other biblical figures like Samuel and Moses. She also addresses the issue of women in ministry and challenges the cultural norms and biases that limit their roles. Sandy encourages both men and women to recognize and embrace their gifts and to be courageous in answering the call of the Holy Spirit.
