The People and Problems in the Apostolic Church

I WAS BLIND, BUT NOW I SEE John 9 is more than the healing of a man born blind; it is a picture of what happens when Jesus opens the eyes of a sinner. The man was physically blind from birth, but his story also mirrors our spiritual condition. We are born unable to truly see Christ until He gives us sight. Jesus saw the man before the man could see Him, and what looked like a lifelong tragedy became a stage for the works and glory of God to be revealed. As the man's eyes were opened, the Pharisees could not deny that something had happened, so they tried to discredit the One who did it and then discredit the man himself. That is often how the world responds to genuine transformation. If people cannot deny the evidence of what Christ has done, they may attack the person who has been changed. But the man stood on the one thing he knew: "Though I was blind, now I see." He did not know everything about Jesus yet, but he knew enough to trust the One who had opened his eyes. His parents, however, were afraid of being rejected by the religious leaders. They could see that something had happened to their son, but fear kept them from openly standing with Jesus. Their response shows how the pressure of acceptance, reputation, family, or community can keep people from confessing Christ even when His work is plainly visible. The formerly blind man grew bolder as the questioning continued. His understanding of Jesus developed from calling Him "a Man," to "a prophet," to recognizing that He must be from God, and finally to confessing, "Lord, I believe," and worshiping Him. After a lifetime of questions, God finally answers Job, but He does so with several questions of His own. One of those peculiar questions asked by God was: "Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea?" Although more than likely Job had never seen the springs of the sea himself, God gave him revelation of what that meant. God was teaching him about a source of life that we all have, that we cannot see. Thank God for His help in the darkest moments in our lives!

He Knew This message and teaching centers on this truth: Jesus knows exactly what He is doing. John introduces us to the Christ, who is eternal God, the source of life, the giver of eternal life, the Light that darkness cannot overcome, and the Lamb who perfectly accomplished the Father's purpose. Because He is sovereign, sufficient, and faithful, we can trust Him even with the parts of life that seem unpleasant, thorny, confusing, or "undrinkable." The water turned to wine in John 2 becomes a beautiful picture of Christ's transforming power. Jesus took ordinary water from purification vessels and produced something unexpectedly excellent. In the same way, He can take the hard-to-swallow experiences of our lives—trouble, disappointment, weakness, failure, loss, and pain—and redeem them for His purposes. We may never call the painful circumstance itself good, but we can eventually testify, "God was good to me in it." He can turn trouble into testimony, scars into compassion, messes into messages, and weaknesses into platforms for His strength. Three questions help us recognize God's work in every season: Is He glorifying Himself through this? Is He conforming me to Jesus through this? Is He preparing what He is doing in me to benefit someone else? Romans 8 reminds us that the ultimate "good" God is working toward is conformity to the image of His Son. What He teaches us through suffering often becomes grace we can later share with another person walking through seasons of troubles and trials. John 1 then establishes who this Jesus really is. "In the beginning was the Word." Jesus did not begin at Bethlehem. He is the eternal Word, God's perfect self-revelation, Creator
