John Rose has been breathing new life into the iconic comic strip Barney Google and Snuffy Smith for over two decades. After joining as an inking assistant to Fred Lasswell in 1998, he took over the strip following Lasswell's passing in 2001. John has published several collections, including The Bodacious Best of Snuffy Smith and Snuffy Smith in His Sunday Best. He also illustrated the children's book The Dogwood Tales and regularly appears at cartooning events, offering live chalk talks where he demonstrates his craft. Congressman John Rose of Tennessee's sixth congressional district won re-election on Tuesday night. Rose says he's ready to work with President Elect Donald Trump & a Republican controlled Senate to enact policy that will help farmers in a tough Ag economy. One of the ways he hopes to do that is by passing a Farm Bill. Rose says the fate of a new Farm Bill is uncertain post election in the lame duck session as the balance of power in the US House Of Representatives is still uncertain.
In 2022, Nashville was gerrymandered into three Congressional districts, in what the New York Times called “an especially egregious twist of the political knife.” We reached out to interview all six candidates this cycle, but only the Democrats responded: Megan Barry, running to unseat Rep. Dr. John Rose joined the Morehead-Cain community this fall as faculty director for Dialogue and Discourse. The initiative is designed to enhance scholars' ability to listen, discuss, and engage in contemporary issues.Rose speaks with Catalyze co-host Stella Smolowitz '26 about his approach to facilitating “charity-centric” dialogue with college students, the connection for him between theology and civic leadership, and advice for navigating political conversations ahead of the November election. Rose came to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from Duke University, where he was the associate director of the Civil Discourse Project and an instructor in the Kenan Institute for Ethics. At Duke, he also taught courses in happiness and human flourishing, Christian ethics, conservatism, and political polarization. His research focuses on virtue ethics and Christian theology.
