Throw your ethics out the window because they're going to be tried, tested, and you won't know what's what anymore by the end of this week! First up: Kira has to face some harsh truths about the part her mother played during the Cardassian occupation in "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night". After that: Julian is told he's a secret Dominion mole so well programmed even HE doesn't know it, but the investigation seems shady in "Inquisition". Also this week: Jake fun, defining collaboration, and sneaky camera tricks. [Timestamps: "Wrongs" 01:29; "Inquisition": 42:00]

Star Trek and Sexual Assault, Part 2. Over its long history, Star Trek has not shied away from dealing with the impact of sexual assault. In its many incarnations, the franchise has offered a number of storylines—some more successful than others—that shine a light on this important issue. And it has always done so through the lens of the current moment. Sometimes the shows have employed classic Trek allegory, with violations of the mind by aliens as a clear stand-in for real-world assault. At other times, sexual assault and harassment have been dealt with more directly. In this episode of Primitive Culture, the second of a two part discussion inspired by the #MeToo movement, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Clara Cook to consider how Star Trek’s sexual assault storylines have played out on screen. Looking at examples from The Original Series through Discovery, they consider issues such as believable consent, response to trauma, and the relationship between sexual violence and other forms of assault in wartime. We also consider what role the #MeToo movement may ultimately play in shaping the narratives of sexual violence that we consume in the future—in Star Trek and beyond. Dukat contacts Kira and informs her that he and her mother were once lovers. Kira is disgusted enough to request that Sisko allow her to use the Orb of Time to travel into the past to verify the claim. While in the past, Kira meets her mother, Kira Meru, and discovers a dark family secret that threatens to change everything. While the time travel aspect is a bit questionable, Wrongs Darker than Death or Night is an extremely fascinating character piece for Kira and for the Bajoran Occupation as a whole. It delves into some moral questions that might not have answers, and it works to both flesh out the pre-DS9 universe and the choices that Bajorans had to make during the Occupation. Plus! The Rules of Acquisition: A Star Trek Deep Space Nine Podcast
Kira's mom did WHAT? A big secret revealed and Kira goes into the past to verify it for herself. Things that make you go hmm. What's the deal with this episode? Kira and Dukat got some things to work out. We may or may not appreciate the drive to tell this story. We have some disagreements about the implementation. Time travel shenanigans. What kind of time travel rules are we using here, and is it a problem if they're not clear? So many nerd corner questions with the temporal mechanics. What kind of way to kick off a story is this? How would we change it? What might have been a better way to structure the story? How numb fisted was the sexual violence and treatment of power structures? Several Potential trigger warnings: Sexual violence. Bad and less bad political metaphors. Is it wrong to have tried to do Handmaids tail for a basic cable 1997 audience? Did Nana Visitor's input on the ending save this episode or only slightly mitigate the damage? What is the deal with this season? Ups and downs and differences in opinions. Let us know what you think! 917 408 3898 and check out the kickers of elves patreon at patreon.com/kickersofelves for more content!
The Terok Nor trilogy is complete, as Sam, Jack, and Kevin dive headfirst into this heavy episode about Major Kira’s mother and her affair with Dukat during the Cardassian occupation. Special guest Jess Cooper brings exciting insight into morality levels of wartime collaborators, Cardassian chauvinism, and bizarre Bajoran dress designs. It’s a heavy episode and a heavy discussion, but that won’t stop us from taking needless detours into discussions about other things like Dragon Ball, Battlestar Galactica, and eating raw beef. Like Kira Meru to Dukat’s charms, you’ll be powerless to this episode, and will willingly give yourself over to its wiles.
Kira goes time travelin’. The boys are all back together to discuss a very interesting episode. It was minimally very good, but was it an all-time classic? We certainly have a very spirited discussion. I think this was one of our favorite recording sessions. Listen and join the conversation in the feedback.
This week we discuss another dark Kira episode, an X-filesy Bashir episode, and our thoughts on the darker sides of DS9.
Season 6, episodes 17 and 18: Kira travels back in time to deal with her mother issues; Bashir gets interrogated, along with a few plot holes.
DS9 Season 6 - Essential Trek Philosophy with Duncan Barrett, Part 1. In this first part of a two-part episode of Meta Treks, hosts Mike Morrison and Zachary Fruhling are joined by author Duncan Barrett to discuss their picks for Essential Trek Philosophy from season 6 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Much of Season 6 of Deep Space Nine can be framed in terms of Thomas Hobbes's conception of a State of Nature outside of civilized society, in which actions in war are not bound by ethical consideration. Duncan Barrett, however, explains Season 6 of Deep Space Nine and the Cardassian occupation of Bajor by comparison with the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War II. The Orb of Time. Deep Space Nine has few time travel stories, but when the writers chose to dip into the temporal well they had a unique tool at their disposal. The Orb of Time offered a way to move characters through time that was not available to the writers of other series. Tied to the Bajoran religion and the overarching storyline of DS9, this mystical object provided a bypass that avoided technobabble explanations. Yet the writers chose to use it only twice: in “Trials and Tribble-ations” and “Wrongs Darker Than Death of Night.” In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss the Orb of Time, why it worked in the instances in which it was used, and why it wasn't used in others. We also imagine new stories that could be built around this special object, and debate whether it is actually possible to change the timeline during an Orb of Time vision. Chapters Intro (00:00:00) Why Use the Orb of Time? (00:03:44) DS9 Time Travel Stories (00:13:04) Imagining Other Orb of Time Stories (00:18:35) Can You Change the Timeline? Kira Meru. For most of her life, Kira Nerys had an image of her mother, Meru, that drove her to hate Cardassians. When her mother was ripped away to serve as a comfort woman aboard Terok Nor, Nerys's life changed forever. She was only three. Told by her father that her mother had died in the detention camp attempting to protect the family, Kira believed her mother was a hero. But when she learns in “Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night” that her mother was actually Dukat's lover, everything that she believed was brought into question. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss Kira Meru, her relationship with Dukat, and Kira Nerys's reaction to her discovery. We ask whether Meru is truly a collaborator, whether the truth was liberating for Nerys, and why the story needs a lot more room to breathe.
