This week Chris is holding down the fort with Luke and is joined by writer Yussef Cole (@youmeyou.bsky.social) who reviewed Assassin's Creed Shadows for The New York Times. We get into Assassin's Creed generally and Shadows specifically, what we like and dislike about the game and if it makes good its narrative promise. Is it simply enough for a game to be the ultimate Japan simulator, particularly when it works so well with the series?Credits- Hosts: Chris Person, Luke Plunkett & special guest Yussef Cole- Yussef also edits Bullet Points Monthly, you can read it here: bulletpointsmonthly.com/- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Each week, games journalism veterans Luke Plunkett, Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, Riley MacLeod, and Gita Jackson – though not always all at once, because that's too many people for a podcast – break down video game news, Remember Some Games, and learn about Chris' frankly incredible number of special interests. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don't know what else to tell you; it's a great time. Rob, Patrick, and Cado are joined by special guest Yussef Cole to talk about Guardians of the Galaxy, a surprisingly not horrible action game that has flown over expectations by being just … fine. Patrick and Yussef break down the game's workable combat, and the way side stories let these characters breath in a way the movies don't. After the break, Rob has been enjoying a dip into history, both his own and that of medieval Europe in Age of Empires IV, an RTS that not only throws back the clock with its setting, but some of it's RTS design choices as well. Cado has finally finished Metroid Dread, and is about as high on the movement and combat as he is low on the overall map structure. This leads us into a discussion over MercurySteam's crediting practices and labor practices across the industry.Discussed: Guardians of the Galaxy 2:54, Age of Empires IV 54:11, Metroid Dread 1:23:28, Labor in the Games Industry 1:33:55 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's time to meet Gar Logan's family(?) in the fourth episode of 2018's Titans, Doom Patrol. The episode serves as a wonderful introduction for the cast of the other DC Universe show but a poor one for the Titans. Except Beast Boy. Hannah loves Beast Boy and his room with a bar. And his brother-dad Cliff. And his cool uncle Larry. And his hot aunt Rita. Hannah has love for everyone. Meanwhile, Kyle figures out that Rachel is a Disney Princess and also Dawn from Buffy. It's a choice. Listen to us shower Cliff, Larry, and Rita with praise! Production Note: We're going to be releasing new episodes only on Mondays from now on. Releasing an episode on Monday and Friday was a bit too much for Kyle. Apologies! Kyle briefly mentioned a piece of critical writing by Yussef Cole on Cuphead, the game Beast Boy is playing.
