Episode 208: How US Media Repackages Pro-Police Policies as "Reform"

“Citizens to Aid Police in New Program,” reported the Los Angeles Times in 1975. “Community Policing: Law Enforcement Returns to Its Roots,” declared the Chicago Tribune in 1994. “Obama Calls for Changes in Policing After Task Force Report,” announced The New York Times in 2015. Periodically, US officials propose some type of police “reform,” usually after a period of widespread protest against ongoing racist police violence. Police, we're told, will improve their own performance and relationships with the public with a few tweaks: better training on use-of-force and equipment, upgraded technology like body cameras and shooting simulators, and deeper integration into the “community.” But, every time a new “reform” is introduced, it almost always serves as justification for bigger police-department budgets and fawning media coverage over police, painting the image of a scrappy force for public safety that just doesn't have the right training and resources. Meanwhile, levels of police harassment and police violence remain the same, and, in many cases, even increase. Indeed, 2023 was the worst year for fatal police shootings in decades despite – or perhaps because of – all the post-Ferguson “reforms." On this episode, the Season 8 Premiere of Citations Needed, we'll discuss the media-enabled phenomenon of how pro-police narratives, programs and budget bloating busy work are spun as “reform,” how they are used to stem public anger and placate squishy politicians and nonprofits, and look at the decades-old practice of turning public opposition to, and victimization from, US policing into an opportunity to expand and enrich the security state. Our guest is civil rights attorney Alec Karakatsanis. ** Alec Karakatsanis (@equalityAlec) is a civil rights attorney and the founder of Civil Rights Corps. He is the author of Alec's Copaganda Newsletter, the book Usual Cruelty: The Complicity of Lawyers in the Criminal Injustice System (The New Press, 2019), the Yale Journal of Law & Liberation study “The Body Camera: The Language of our Dreams,” and the forthcoming book, Copaganda: How Police and the Media Manipulate Our News, which will be published early next year by The New Press.

Episode 463: Gonna Love Me In My Chevy Van This week Host Dave Bledsoe drunkenly climbs into the back of a van and insists the driver take him back to 1986. (The cops closed the doors of the paddy wagon and took him to The Tombs. Again) On the show this week we go back to the 1970's when the vans all airbrushed murals on the sides and waterbeds in the back! We talk about Van Life in the 70s! Along the way we learn that Dave's Senior Prom experience was exactly what you might expect from him. (He got high in the parking lot.) Then we dive right into what vans are and why we are using them to pad out six minutes of content for the show. (We have a formula and we stick to it!) Then we dive right into how cool people decided to make their vans more than just boxes on wheels, they would make them artistic sex wagons. (Pro-tip: Bean Bags) We learn how van conversions went mainstream and then inevitably into corporate money makers, and died. (Blame Lee Iacocca.) Our sponsor this week is Corey's Custom Conversions, the man for your van! We open with the story of vans and close with John G Chapman, who gave a girl a ride in his wagon. From rumors that Beyonce was going to perform to Uncommitted delegates staging an all-night sit-in outside the United Center to demand that a Palestinian voice be given time to speak on the main stage, there were many storylines that emerged from the 2024 Democratic National Convention. But the DNC also showed how the ruling establishment and corporate media work together to curate a fantasy version of reality, especially when it comes to whitewashing the Biden-Harris Administration's unequivocal support for Israel's genocidal assault on Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, to discuss President Biden's recent proposals to reform the Supreme Court. Then, he speaks with Adam Johnson, co-host of the Citations Needed podcast & writer at The Column newsletter on SubStack, to discuss labor unions efforts to gain commitments from the Harris campaign to stop sending military aid to Israel. Then, he speaks with Seth Fleisher & Emily Baldwin, co-founders of the political action organization Walk the Walk! First, Sam runs through updates on Israel's major escalations in Iran and Lebanon, US Presidential polling, student debt relief, Project 2025, JD Vance's misogyny, the Trump would-be-assassin, elections in Arizona and Venezuela, reports on the mass deaths of native children at US boarding schools, rising homelessness and rents, and the passage of COSA, before diving into the major developments in Kamala Harris' Veepstakes. Ari Berman then joins, diving right into the complete untethering of the 6-3 conservative majority US Supreme Court from any jurisprudence or ideology, and it's all-around corruption exposed over the last few years. Berman then looks to Biden's new platform for reforming the Supreme Court, taking a moment to walk through each of the three major elements on this agenda, including 18 year term-limits with 2-years between nominations, an ethics code, and a constitutional amendment to undo the recent decision on presidential immunity. Adam Johnson and Sam then walk through the major push by unions in recent months to challenge the Biden Administration's support for and arming of Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza, with Shawn Fain going as far as to consider the UAW unendorsing Biden, before looking to the current moment, tackling their response to Harris all-but taking Biden's place on the ticket. Stepping back, Adam walks through the evolution of the Biden Administration's approach to the “ceasefire” demand, from banning the use of related terms outright to now using the hope of one (and the supposed negotiations) as a tantalizing carrot, redefining the conversation away from the US using their leverage to push a cessation of hostilities to now what is largely an Israeli PR strategy focused on the supposed “facilitation” of negotiations, despite the obvious bad faith intentions. Wrapping up, Johnson assesses the narrative around Harris' approach to Gaza, why her stance remains unclear to both unions and the public, and what to expect from her campaign moving forwards. Lastly, Seth Fleisher and Emily Baldwin join in as they walk through Walk the Walk's project to refocus energy, labor, and money to grassroots, progressive organizing, tackling the major dearth of funds and labor in the vast majority of down-ballot races, as well as the importance of relying on existing grassroots organizations to build on and strengthen networks of community trust and civil engagement. After expanding on the major races and organizations they are working with during this election cycle, they wrap up with what we can do to join the effort. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Tim Pool fantasize about his Lord and Savior Donald Trump and Jesse Watters walks through the bio-political process of gender fluidity. Mark Robinson questions the low-effort selfishness of Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, which JD Vance expands on, and Hung Cao discusses saving Virginia from Monterey Bay Wiccans. The MR Team reflects on John Bolton's coup credentials, Donald Trump doubles down on his insistence on Jews voting for him, plus, your IMs! We got our answer this weekend and the response took the form of a very deliberate barrage of missiles and drones, telegraphed days in advance, on military targets in Israel that, according to who you ask, was either the worst thing to ever happen or a pathetic failure that Israel (along with its usual allies) repelled easily.Nima Shirazi has not only been talking and writing about Iran, Palestine and Israel for a long time but also co-hosts the Citations Needed podcast which does a fantastic job analyzing the various tactics the media uses to manufacture certain narratives, so he was really the perfect guest to talk about all this with. Israel's genocide in Gaza has unleashed a low-grade regional war that is gradually escalating towards what could become an all-out conflict. The central players in this simmering showdown are the members of the informal Resistance Axis, which include Hezbollah in Lebanon, a number of armed Palestinian groups including Hamas, the Syrian and Iranian governments, the Houthis or Ansarallah in Yemen, and Iraq's armed Popular Mobilization Forces. Numerous strikes against Israeli and US military and commercial targets across the region have already been carried out by these groups since last October, from US military bases in Iraq to Israel-linked commercial shipping in the Red Sea.As the possibility of a regional conflagration looms, corporate media outlets are turning their attention to the Resistance Axis—and often regurgitating stale, Orientalist narratives that have been deployed for decades to justify US and Israeli aggression in the region. Central to this media narrative is the presentation of Iran as a kind of puppet master overseeing and coordinating the activities of the Resistance Axis. What this narrative fails to take into account is that it is not Iran that has the Resistance Axis, but decades of US and Israeli aggression. Journalists Rania Khalek and Nima Shirazi join The Real News for a conversation on the media narratives spun around the Resistance Axis and Iran, and how decades of such portrayals have primed the US public to support forever wars in West Asia.Rania Khalek is a Middle East-based journalist for Breakthrough News where she hosts the show Dispatches. On this week's episode of Lever Time, David Sirota is joined by journalist and Citations Needed podcast co-host Adam H. Johnson to discuss the contradictions and hypocrisies of the multibillion-dollar self-help industry — an industry that has long convinced people that unhappiness is an attitude problem, and not a societal issue that needs to be addressed at a systemic level.Adam's recent story for The Lever exposed how one of the industry's leading authors, Arthur Brooks, spent decades advocating for economic policies that have immiserated working Americans. As the former head of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), one of the country's most prominent conservative think tanks, Brooks was paid nearly $3 million a year to help lead campaigns against Medicaid expansion, free college, rent control, and universal health care.In today's interview, David and Adam unpack how large parts of the self-help industry grifts its customers, the history of AEI and its toxic influence on American politics, and Brooks' career transition from sower of despair to peddler of happiness.A transcript of this episode is available here.Links: The Happiness Guru Who Immiserated America (The Lever, 2023)BONUS: This past Monday's bonus episode of Lever Time Premium, exclusively for The Lever's supporting subscribers, featured David's interview with Media Matters' Allison Fisher about Rupert Murdoch's lasting impact on climate change, since the recently retired media mogul used his control of Fox News and hundreds of other media outlets to spread misinformation and climate denialism. If you'd like access to Lever Time Premium, which includes extended interviews and bonus content, head over to LeverNews.com to become a supporting subscriber. If you'd like to leave a tip for The Lever, click the following link. Nima's career is full of exciting experiences, including his current job as a vice president at Spitfire Strategies and drumming in rock bands, and especially Citations Needed. Nima and his co-host Adam Johnson set up shop at the intersection of power, politics, propaganda, and the press (pretty peppy party, Pete) – no small feat, as it happens. Nima's show explores the many ways that media language infiltrates our daily lives and how pernicious those terms can be. For instance, did you know that the term “officer-involved shooting” was created in the 70s by the LAPD to describe officers killing members of the public? Nima uses his experience on the podcast to keep him honest-er in his work and his approach to communications. We wouldn't call him the biggest optimist in the room, but you'll appreciate Nima's thoughts about how progressive organizations can use communications to change dangerous narratives. Listen now to hear how (how now, brown cow? Okay, we'll stop).

"Education... is a great equalizer of conditions of men—the balance wheel of the social machinery," stated school reformer Horace Mann in 1848. "Math is the great equalizer," preached Jaime Escalante, Edward James Olmos' character, in the 1988 film Stand and Deliver. "The best anti-poverty program around is a world-class education," announced Barack Obama during his 2010 State of the Union address.   This message is everywhere, pervading political speeches, Oscar-bait films, think-tank papers, and everything in between. The key to economic upward mobility—we're endlessly told, is education—a societal building block that is, or at least should be, accessible to every child, no matter their race, gender, or income level. It's a seductive, seemingly unassailable conceit, suggesting that we live in a meritocracy where second chances and generational wealth-building are possible, even probable, with a few simple tools.   But is there any truth to this idea? There's a growing body of evidence showing that education level does not, in fact, necessarily translate to higher wages. Which raises the questions: Why has the idea that education is the ultimate anti-poverty tool persisted? Whose interests are served in its continuation? And who, in turn, pays the price?   On this episode, the Season Six premiere of Citations Needed, we detail and debunk the widespread conventional wisdom that education is the rising tide that lifts all boats, looking at the ways it reinforces themes of individualism and personal responsibility; obscures systemic issues like racism and worker exploitation in the labor market; and ultimately keeps people entrenched in, rather than liberating them from, poverty and low-wage work.   Our guest is Lake Forest professor Cristina Viviana Groeger.

"It is safe to say that almost no city needs to tolerate slums," wrote New York City official Robert Moses in 1945. "Our ancestors came across the ocean in sailing ships you wouldn't go across a lake in. When they arrived, there was nothing here," Ross Perot proclaimed in 1996. "We proved we can create a budding garden out of obstinate ground," beamed Israeli president Shimon Peres in 2011.   These quotes recurring themes within the lore of settler-colonial states: Before settlers arrived in the United States, Israel, and other colonized places throughout the world, the land was barren, wild, and blighted, the people backward, untameable, and violent; nothing of societal importance existed. It was only when the monied industrialists and developers moved in, introducing their capital and their vision, that civilization began. This, of course, is false. Indigenous people inhabited North America long before Europeans did. Poor, often Black and Latino, people populate many neighborhoods targeted for gentrification. So how do these people–inhabitants of coveted places who prove inconvenient to capital–become erased from collective memory? And what role do media like newspapers, brochures, travel dispatches, and adventure books play in their erasure?   In a previous Citations Needed episode (Ep. 155: How the American Settler-Colonial Project Shaped Popular Notions of ‘Conservation'), we discussed the erasure of indigeneity, we explored the colonialist and racist foundations of conservationism in the US and elsewhere in the West. On this episode, follow-up to that episode, we explore how images and narratives of barrenness and blight are manufactured to justify the settler-colonial project, from 15th Century colonial subjects of Europe to urban neighborhoods of today.   Our guest is scholar Stephanie Lumsden.

Show Notes Episode 352: The Malls Are All Empty Now This week Host Dave Bledsoe has his Mom and Dad drop him off at the mall, and then runs across the parking lot to get drunk in the Applebees. (Dave: still disappointing his parents at 52!) On the show this week, we put on our parachute pants, zip up our Members Only Jacket and head down to the Food Court at our local mall! (We will be sitting with the cool kids!) Along the way we discover that Dave's granny loved him the best. (Which is probably why he is such a spoiled little bitch now.) Then we dive right into the history of and different types of shopping malls around America. (With more information than you ever wanted or needed.) Then we slip through the time portal that is The Mall to revisit all the shops you could never afford to buy anything from when you were a kid. Before we leave, we have to stop at Spencer's Gifts for some fake poop. Our Sponsor this week is The Creepy Guy at the Food Court, we don't know who or what he is, we only know that he exists. We open the show with True Stories and close with Mojo Nixon who has a suggestion for what to do with all these empty malls. Faith in Biden is slipping. Faith in even progressive representatives is slipping. Whether it's ending climate change, passing an infrastructure bill or rooting out white supremacy, Democrats too often end up going home when they could go big. On the eve of a bad night for many Democrats (with some silver linings in local elections), Adam Johnson of Citations Needed joins to talk about the failure of the party to think outside the box and their pocketbooks. And comedian Steve Hernandez discusses how unsurprised he is by the details of one Jan 6th insurrectionists' prison stay. We've all eaten those bologna sandwiches. We’re hard at work on new episodes of 3 Clips, so here’s an oldie but a goodie — one of our most popular episodes… We've got a dynamic co-hosting duo: welcome Ashley Hamer and Cody Gough of Curiosity Daily. A daily, yes, daily (!), podcast about science, which is part of Discovery. Host Jay Acunzo gets into great topics with Cody and Ashley, starting with, how, just how do they put out a well researched and fact-checked show every single day? This episode also covers topics of performing on the mic, how these two make a co-hosting relationship work, how to communicate science to a general audience, and more. And to that last topic, being a science communicator to a wide audience, Ashley had a great thought to add after we recorded, so hang out past all the credits and even past the closing theme music to hear what she had to say.
