Elite commando fanfic readers Della and Amado read a fancomic that skirts right up to the edge of being official but doesn't quite cross that line. Spartan sharpshooter Jun has some issues that he needs to work through. Della has some Halo lore to talk about. And most importantly, Covenant soldiers get blown up by some sticky grenades. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin our annual spooky series in a little place called Bright Falls, with Remedy's 2010 horror adventure Alan Wake. We place the game in its time a bit (not that long ago) and talk about how that first episode presents itself. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Episode 1 Issues covered: reviewing our spooky season, feeling like a 2010 game, the Alan Wake DLC for Control, hard to compare with other developers, doubling down on a hook, connecting their games together, featuring the preoccupations of one writer, reviewing 2010, an open world game, systemic survival games, thinking about some open horror games, empowerment and lack of dread, being close to a visual narrative, stitching together narrative, simple combat, graphic novel treatments and tv treatments, iterating on what they do well, bullet time, theming around narrative, making you a little unsettled, thin interactivity, leaning on Stephen King, the Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks connection, the early ages of narrative design and adding writing, pacing out in an open world version, cross-pollination, licensed music, the diner scene, what is reality, too many puzzle boxes, not worrying about the threads too much, the Riddler writes in, Brett's Arkham City Riddler progress, having a controller for the first time, the mouse and the flash-in-the-pan, a great first controller game. A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
In 2011-2012, the gaming world was in flux. While iconic figures like Sonic celebrated milestones, the industry grappled with newfound freedoms and responsibilities, thanks to the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Brown vs. Entertainment Merchants Association. This decision affirmed video games as expressive art, prompting developers to venture into uncharted territories. Meanwhile, controversies swirled, from the PlayStation Network hack in retaliation to Sony's lawsuit against George 'Geohotz' Hotz, to EA's contentious "Project Ten Dollar" and the emergence of loot boxes. Amid this, Epic Games unveiled Fortnite, hinting at future trends. 2012 saw Sony's PlayStation Vita and Nintendo's Wii U launch, with both navigating murky waters. The Vita battled its identity amidst the mobile gaming surge and the cross-buy initiative's challenges, while the Wii U grappled with marketing missteps. Yet, as consoles stumbled, PC gaming surged, and esports, bolstered by Twitch's rise, began its mainstream march. This period encapsulated the industry's transformative journey, marked by innovation, challenges, and the reshaping of gaming's cultural footprint.Featured Games:The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Zelda: Skyward Sword, Portal 2, Dark Souls, Beyond Good & Evil, Halo Reach, Mass Effect 3, Battle Toads, Max Payne 3, Journey, FTL: Faster Than Light, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, The Walking Dead, & Halo 4. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 9 (00:06) - 2011 (27:22) - 2012 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Hip Hop Gamer fell in love with videogames at the early age of 4 years old. In December of 2007, he would take to digital media to create his first YouTube video and merged Hip Hop and gaming into one entity. One video led to another, and soon Hip Hop Gamer started to develop a small fan base. E3 veteran and former owner of thebitbag.com, Torrence Davis soon spotted HHG's work and offered him credentials to attend E3 for his first time. It was then that HHG strove to become a world renown brand in gaming media. The HHG movement continued to grow as after an interview with TV host and DJ Peter Rosenberg of “Ebro in the Morning” on Hot97, as he was presented with the opportunity to become a gaming content contributor for New York's top hip-hop radio station, Hot 97 combining his love for gaming, sports and entertainment in a unique way, the Hip Hop Gamer began curating and creating custom content for motion pictures such as Battleship and Ghost in The Shell as well as by interviewing celebrities such as Jerry Rice, Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Cena, Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, Ryan Reynolds, Tyler Perry, RZA, Raekwon, Vivica A. Fox, Angela Basset and a host of other A-list celebrities and industry leaders. Hip Hop Gamer was also one of the first journalist to be on Playstation Home. He also has music that can be found in Watchdogs 2, Twisted Metal, Halo Reach, NBA Playgrounds 1 and 2. He is a playable character in the NBA Playground games and a charcter in the Watch Dog 2 Game. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mastermine-mrg/message

Jon Hicks, formerly of Official Xbox Magazine, joins us to revisit the 360 era through his experiences of the time. This week's music is from the Halo: Reach soundtrack by Michael Salvatori and Marty O'Donnell.
After tackling Metroid in Season 1, the second season of Game Informer's Video Gameography podcast moves on to one of the biggest shooter franchises in existence: Halo. This week, we examine Bungie's swansong for the Halo franchise: Halo Reach. Halo Reach launched on September 14, 2010, for Xbox 360 and served as a prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved. Set on the doomed planet Reach, players control a new member of the Spartan Noble Team as they valiantly defend the human-occupied world from a massive Covenant invasion. The time and setting gave Bungie creative freedom to introduce new characters and flesh out an event that had only been referenced in books, while the multiplayer introduced new (though divisive) mechanics such as armor abilities. Join hosts Ben Reeves (@BenjaminReeves) and Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), and Polygon's Mike Mahardy (@mmahardy) as we unpack the history and impact of Halo's most emotionally charged entry to that point. And for more Halo, be sure to check out our definitive ranking of every Halo game. Check out the rest of our podcast on the Video Gameography hub. If you'd like to get in touch with the Video Gameography podcast, you can email us at podcast@gameinformer.com. You can also join our official Game Informer Discord server by linking your Discord account to your Twitch account and subscribing to the Game Informer Twitch channel. From there, find the Video Gameography channel under "Community Spaces."
