Don't let the episode title fool you, it's not all doom and gloom this week... DOOM: The Dark Ages is out and we dig into what it gets right and wrong; Regardless of it's faults, it's still great to see DOOM thriving in the year of our (dark) lord, 2025. Brad suspects that Mercury Steam may have lucked into creating a hidden gem with their latest IP, Blades of Fire, and Krispy can't say enough great things about Skin Deep (Blendo Games new joint).

The premise is simple: we read a hypothetical statement and then assign it a percentage based on how likely to be true we think it's be! On the docket this week: will the next Mercury Steam game have a great soundtrack? How much would a Metroid movie make at the box office? Will Federation Force ever see a port? Will Samus show up in Mario Kart 9? Will Nintendo sell Metroid Prime 4 at a premium price? Could Retro Studios ever revive Raven Blade? The black sheep in the Metroid series, Metroid 2: Return of Samus, was originally developed and published by Nintendo for Game Boy in 1991, and has since seen two well-known remakes- the fan remake AM2R, developed by Milton Guasti and released for PC in 2016, as well as MercurySteam and Nintendo's official remake, Metroid: Samus Returns, released in 2017 for the 3DS. This episode is a compare and contrast episode, featuring all three games. Joining me for this episode are three Metroid aficionados- Matt aka Stormageddon ("Fun" and Games, Reignite, Screen Snark podcasts), Geoff Moonen ("Fun" and Games) and Case Aiken (Men of Steel, Another Pass podcasts). What happens when you create a series that launches an entire genre? While Metroid may not have been the first ‘metroidvania', it and its predecessors are certainly the ones we look to as the standard bearer. Metroid Dread comes long after the Cambrian explosion of the metroidvania genre, but proves that the series and its new developers at Mercury Steam, are able to hang with the best of them. Metroid Dread iterates on Metroid Fusion's introduction of being hunted and inclusion of horror elements while upping the ante graphically and gameplay-wise with stunning (and often challenging) boss fights. As the (as of now) final episode in the Metroid series, chronologically speaking, it is a fitting send off for the truly iconic bounty hunter hero, Samus Aran.
