Episode Notes:- The episode opens with Eden reading a Tumblr post that hilariously and bleakly explains modern burnout as a result of living in a crumbling world. Peter and Eden relate strongly, setting the tone for a cathartic conversation.- Eden checks in with the ongoing Adachi and Shimamura manga journey. Volume 8 features a flash-forward to adulthood and two momentous forehead kisses.- Gaming fatigue takes center stage as Eden recounts failed attempts to get into Sunhaven, Paradise Killer, and even the stylish-but-demanding Shenmue. Nothing sticks.- Eden shares a new afternoon ritual: practicing Gong Fu tea ceremonies. A color-changing fox teapet becomes a symbol of small joys amid burnout.- Music talk includes Pelican's new album, which fell flat in comparison to a recent live show from Russian Circles, with Pelican being described as "bargain-basement Russian Circles."- Peter introduces Bleed's debut album, which feels like a time capsule from the early 2000s alt-rock scene. It's not groundbreaking, but the nostalgia hits just right.- Avowed patch 1.4 discussion highlights fun new features: spiders replaced with spheres, better loot drops, and the return of everyone's favorite character, the raunchy and hilarious Yatzli.- Main topic: What Remains of Edith Finch. Peter and Eden break down their impressions of the game: - It's emotionally heavy, occasionally to a fault. - Some vignettes (like Lewis's cannery sequence and Barbara's horror comic) are standout. - Others, like Molly's transformation or Gregory's bathtub scene, fall flat or feel manipulative. - Both hosts agree it's visually and structurally ambitious, but uneven. - Eden calls it the "death knell" of the walking simulator genre.- Final thoughts reflect on the evolution of indie storytelling and how walking sims have largely given way to more interactive, mechanic-rich narratives.- The episode wraps with a discussion of the flawed 7-to-9 scoring scale used in video game reviews and how many games get overhyped despite major issues.

Not to get too big-headed or anything, but I think it's fair to say that here at Indieventure we knew about Blue Prince before almost anyone. The demo that sparked obsessions in both Rachel and Rebecca over the past few months has now transformed into 2025's most highly-rated game release so far, garnering early GOTY predictions not just within the indie space, but even when compared to this year's roster of Triple-As (which let's be honest, is so far pretty muted due to everyone and their mum being afraid of launching up against GTA6). So, naturally, we're dedicating this episode to Blue Prince now that it's out. And once again, we have a minority report situation on our hands, because while Rebecca and Rachel remain captivated, Liam has some thoughts that go against the general consensus on this game. But it's us, so of course we have a kind and respectful discussion that only goes off the rails through incidental chatter. There's only so much you can say about a game that's really best encountered with minimal spoilers, though, so we use Blue Prince as a jumping-off point to talk about houses in games generally. It sounds straightforward enough, but when you stop to think about it, a quite staggering number of video games touch on domestic spaces – for everything from humanising characters who might otherwise be difficult to identify with, to creating a sense of dread as the familiar turns sinister. We talk about a lot of games – including quite a few illegal AAAs who provide some vital context for the discussion – but for those of you who like to keep track, the indie game houses we touch on here include the essentials like the ones found in Gone Home and What Remains of Edith Finch, as well as The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, The Crush House, Devotion, Go-Go Town, Layers of Fear, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Lost Records, Mouthwashing, PowerWash Simulator, The Room, Rusty Lake, Stardew Valley, Sucker for Love, Tangle Tower, Thank Goodness You're Here, Unpacking, and Visage. As always and ever, we end on our current hyperfixations. Liam has been playing Promise Mascot Agency – which launched on the same day as Blue Prince and will surely be coming up on the pod again – and has been as delighted by it as you'd expect the person who inducted Paradise Killer into the vault to be with its long-anticipated follow-up. Rebecca has been reading Elphie: A Wicked Childhood, the latest book by Gregory Maguire that staunchly refuses to make concessions to the stage/film version of Wicked compared to the much weirder original novel series that she's loved for decades. And while it's maybe not her usual genre, Rachel has been surprised to find herself really, really enjoying newly-released tower defense RTS Cataclismo. This week Seoirse is joined by three very special guests, Oli, Rachel and Phil, who are all part of Kaizen Game Works and came on the podcast to talk about their upcoming open world narrative game Promise Mascot Agency. This promises to be one of the most unique games coming out and you can learn all about this game as well as their previous game Paradise Killer in this interview. And if that's not enough they also have time to talk about the original version of Until Dawn, which Oli worked as developer on ten years ago. Welcome back to Indieventure EXTRA, our bonus series where we interview key members of the games industry. In this episode, Liam sits down with the directors at Kaizen Game Works to chat about their highly anticipated next title: the open-world mascot management crime adventure Promise Mascot Agency. Rachel Noy (Art Director), Oli Clarke Smith (Game Director) and Phil Crabtree (Technical Director) discuss the game's unusual origins, what it's like to work alongside Ikumi Nakamura and the - quite frankly - bizarre story of how the voice of Kazuma Kiryu himself, Takaya Kuroda, came to voice their protagonist. The Kaizen Trio also reflect on (our beloved) Paradise Killer five years after its original release. Enjoy! Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Time for one more bit of silly fun before we settle down to the serious business of 2024 GOTY picks? We certainly think so, as in this week's Indieventure episode, we're doing an indie game draft! That's right, three people who clearly know nothing about sports have nevertheless kitbashed the idea of fantasy football together with something we're actually interested in, and have designed our dream indie gaming consoles following a curious set of rules that Liam explains very well in the episode and so I won't repeat here, even though I do remember and understand them, honest. Due to the dramatic and intense nature of the game we're playing today, characterised as it is by shocking betrayals and twists nobody could ever see coming, I'm going to strongly recommend you don't read the show notes until you've listened to the episode. Does anyone even actually do that? Well, here's your chance to go in without spoilers. Seriously, go listen. Are you back? OK, good. So, since you've heard it now, you know that you, dear listener, have a chance to vote in our poll to determine the winner of the inaugural Indieventure draft slash console sales pitch! We'll have a poll up on socials for a week after the episode goes live because that's all Xitter will allow; but if you still want to take part after that, you can do so over at our lovely and still almost-brand-new Indieventure Discord, where the poll will be live for a whole fortnight and where you can also chat with some really cool and nice fellow listeners. As a reminder, then, the final console drafts were as follows: The MegaWatt Voyager, pitched by Rachel, and containing Paradise Killer, Kentucky Route Zero, Vampire Survivors, Hades, Cult of the Lamb, Hollow Knight, Loop Hero, Disco Elysium, Minecraft, and Undertale The Empathy Machine, pitched by Rebecca, which includes Heaven's Vault, Firewatch, Stardew Valley, Project Zomboid, Untitled Goose Game, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Wedding Witch, Dredge, PowerWash Simulator, and Strange Horticulture The Indiescovery, not confusingly at all pitched by Liam, pre-loaded with Return of the Obra Dinn, What Remains of Edith Finch, Balatro, Rimworld, Deep Rock Galactic, Hotline Miami, Slay the Spire, Journey, Satisfactory, and Hypnospace Outlaw It's all down to you now, listeners, to let us know whose dream machine you think has the best launch line-up and/or who made the most compelling case for their pitch! The poll is open for two weeks, so I'm sure we'll be reacting to the results in a couple of episodes' time. Now, we had so much fun recording this episode that two hours just flew by before we knew it, and so we've elected to skip What We've Been Playing this week because frankly if you've made it this far into all the madness then you've probably listened to us natter enough. That being said, it wouldn't be an episode of Indieventure without a quick run-down of our current hyperfixations, so hang around for just a few extra minutes if you want to hear us enthuse about the TV series Agatha All Along (Rebecca), the novel Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson (Liam), and the recently-released indie game Neva (Rachel). Believe it or not it's been one whole trip around the sun since we released the first ever episode of Indieventure! And to celebrate, we've opened up the mailbag once again to answer your listener questions. Ever wondered how we find out about exciting upcoming indies to talk about on the podcast, or which indie video game we'd most like to see get the tabletop treatment? Maybe you're curious as to our respective favourite games on the late lamented indie machine that was the Nintendo 3DS — or want to hear us go off-topic once more while we debate which Ace Attorney case would make the best stand-alone game? All this and more will be revealed, including an incredibly cursed final question that must be heard to be believed. This episode isn't really about any games in particular… don't worry though, here's a handy summary of the titles we touch on for all my list goblins out there! This episode is an opportunity to fill your earholes with some lovely (or not) discussions of Against the Storm, Boyfriend Dungeon, Braid, Citizen Sleeper, Control, Dredge, Gunman Clive, Harold Halibut, The Missing: JJ Macfield and the Island of Memories, Monster Prom, Paradise Killer, A Park Full of Cats, Peggle, Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One, Severed, Slice & Dice, Steamworld Heist, Still Wakes the Deep, Stray Cats in Cozy Town, ValiDate: Struggling Singles in Your Area, and Wilmot's Warehouse. And, in this episode's pre-GOTY round-up of what we've been playing lately, we take a trip down false-memory lane with UFO 50, an 8-bit console that never was; discuss whether inventive perspective-flipped dating sim The Crush House is being held back by a broken in-game economy; and reach a surprising consensus on recent body horror streaming hit Mouthwashing. We end as ever with our latest round of hyperfixations! Rebecca has been reading Jacqueline Wilson's Think Again, Rachel has a new reality TV obsession in The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and Liam has gone further down the Resident Evil rabbit hole than even he ever expected to get with The Mercenaries 3D. Music is undeniably a huge part of what makes video games special, both individually and on an industry-wide level. Not only is no gaming award show complete without a gong for the year's best soundtrack, but even the Proms have started acknowledging that video game scores have come a long way since the 8-bit days (without throwing any shade on chiptune, a legitimate genre in and of itself with some stone-cold classics). That's probably why, from huge AAAs to smaller indies, music can account for a significant chunk of any game's budget — and it's definitely worth the investment. For this episode, the Indieventure trio have pooled our vinyl collection to talk about some of our personal favourite indie game music highlights. I know you guys say you love long show notes but there's seriously no way I'm going to be able to list every track we talk about here — which is why we've put together [a YouTube playlist] that should cover everything instead! A quick overview, though, sees us talking about the music from games including Balatro, Bombrush Cyberfunk, Braid, Celeste, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Dear Esther, Death's Door, Dicey Dungeons, Disco Elysium, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Fields of Mistria, Firewatch, Hades, Hades II, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Hollow Knight, Hotline Miami, Hypnospace Outlaw, Journey, Kentucky Route Zero, Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp, Minecraft, No Straight Roads, Paradise Killer, Pizza Tower, Pyre, Return of the Obra Dinn, Stardew Valley, A Tower Full of Cats, Trombone Champ, Undertale, Unravel, and We Happy Few. If you'd like to hear every track we discuss in this episode in its entirety, we've added them all to a convenient YouTube playlist that you can find here. During the course of this chat we also promise you a couple of specific links, so go here for Bombrush Cyberfunk soundtrack memes, and here for one of the Ace Attorney x Danganronpa musical mashup channels on YouTube that Rebecca (and now Rachel too) is so very fond of. Finally, as ever, are our current hyperfixations! Rebecca has discovered an accidentally awesome double-bill of horror novels with a timely social message in Chuck Tingle's Bury Your Gays and Grady Hendrix's The Final Girl Support Group; Liam's been having a whimsical time in recently-released indie platformer The Plucky Squire; and Rachel is having a moment with girly pop in general, and Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter in particular, thanks to the recent VMAs award show. The UK is enjoying its annual two weeks of good weather and so the Indieventure crew have decided to get together and plan an indie game (well, indie-led) summer holiday! That's right, it's another list episode, featuring a whistlestop tour of some of the greatest vacation destinations in video games according to, as it turns out, three potentially nightmarish travel companions. Our dream trip turns out to include stops in: Abzu, Anemoiapolis, Animal Crossing: Wild World, BioShock, Book of Travels, Botany Manor, The Coin Game, Danganronpa 2, Dishonored 2, Doomsday Paradise, Dorfromantik, En Garde!, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Final Fantasy VII, Firewatch, Five Nights at Freddy's, The Good Life, Half-Life, A Highland Song, Hooked On You, Huniepop 2, The Last of Us, The Legend of Zelda, Let's Build A Zoo, Overboard, Paradise Killer, Parkasaurus, Placid Plastic Duck Simulator, Pokémon Crystal, The Quarry, Resident Evil, Roman Sands RE:Build, A Short Hike, Star Birds, Stardew Valley, Strange Horticulture, Thank Goodness You're Here, Thimbleweed Park, Until Dawn, and The Witness. In hyperfixations, Rachel has again turned her attention to tabletop gaming and has been greatly enjoying Spots, a card game where you roll dice and apply their dots to a variety of cute dalmatians. Liam has been playing Destiny 2: The Final Shape, reminding him once again that he actually really likes Destiny 2 sorry-not-sorry. Rebecca has been very busy but nevertheless the announcement of Life is Strange: Double Exposure is giving her life. (Note: We had to record this episode further in advance than usual, which is why you won't hear anyone getting excited about the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection — don't be alarmed, normal service will undoubtedly resume in the next episode.) Happy Pride Month, Indieventurers! Regular listeners to this 100% LGBTQIA+-fronted podcast will know that we're not exactly quietly closeted for the other 11 months of the year, but this June we've elected to challenge ourselves to make an episode that is our gayest yet. This takes the format of an open-ended chat where we discuss everything from our favourite queer characters and stories in indie games, to some maybe less-than-flawless examples of queer representation (be it explicit or just heavily implied) that we still love, to games that maybe don't have any reference to gender or sexuality at all but which still have such gay energy you'd swear they were developed exclusively by drag queens. We also chat a bit about our early memories as queer gamers in the '90s and '00s, and naturally the conversation occasionally veers into favourite AAA franchises that make at least a bit of an effort to be inclusive, even though indie games are definitely where it's at for this topic. Oh, and of course we couldn't let the opportunity pass us by to talk a little bit about our favourite gay lawyers and just what exactly makes the Ace Attorney franchise so very blatantly queer despite technically having no properly out characters. Fans of our rapid-fire conversational shifts are about to eat well as this episode takes us on a whistle-stop tour through literally dozens of our favourite queer-themed, queer-developed, and/or queer-coded games and franchises, including: Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, Doki Doki Literature Club!, Fashion Police Squad, Frog Detective, Gone Home, Goodbye Volcano High, If Found…, In Stars & Time, The Last Express, The Last of Us, Life is Strange, Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, Mediterranea Inferno, The Missing: J.J. Macfield & the Island of Memories, Paradise Killer, Paralives, Resident Evil 3 (no, really!), The Sims, Simulacra, Slime Rancher, Sucker for Love: Date to Die For, Telltale's The Walking Dead, Thomas Was Alone, Tiny Life, Unpacking, Videoverse, and A Year of Springs. In this episode's hyperfixations, Liam is fascinated by the concept of building your own internet away from the dubious influences of corporate social media, and recommends checking out sites like Thinky Games and McMansion Hell if you want a return to the good old days of reading about strangers' niche interests in their own personal style of communicating. (Pssst, you should also check out sevenoutoften.co.uk and indieventurepodcast.co.uk if you want to see some sites that Liam has quite literally built himself!) Meanwhile, Rebecca has been reminded of the important work Devcats always do in keeping her mental health in check during stressful times, as she's been navigating a pile-up of life events with the help of their most recent hidden object game, A Tower Full of Cats. Finally, Rachel took our own advice from the last episode and played Crow Country in Exploration mode, and has been very happy with the result. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! We're trying something new here on Rhythm Encounter. While there is no end to the variety of RPG music out there, sometimes we spot similar song titles on different soundtracks, which gave us an idea. For this episode, each panelist chose a pairing of two (near) identical track names from different games, so we could compare and contrast each version. As we learned, this is a topic that could repeat, as there's no shortage of potential songs that fit this theme. Give it a listen and let us know what pairings you have discovered!Featuring: Mike Salbato, Audra Bowling, Gio Castillo, Tin Manuel; Edited by Paul DennisTracklist0:13:26 - A New World (Go Shiina) - God Eater0:16:25 - Final Fantasy V: A New World (Nobuo Uematsu, arr. In Episode 8 of Indieventure, we re-introduce an old favourite concept of ours from days gone by: the Indieventure Vault, an eclectic mind-palace of our own construction where we store the very best indie games, blending personal favourites with undeniable classics. Previous inductees — which we take the time to re-induct, since this Vault is completely legally distinct from any other indie game Vaults you might be thinking about — are two all-time favourite indie games from each of us. Rebecca carefully places Monster Prom and Firewatch on a commemorative shelf, Rachel chucks Kentucky Route Zero and Return of the Obra Dinn in the same vague direction, and Liam drop-kicks Hypnospace Outlaw and Paradise Killer into a hole in the ground, but like, respectfully. Everyone's very on-form. Then it's time to introduce some new games to the collection, and this time we've each selected one indie game that we all feel is just far too important to omit. For Liam, that's just got to be Stardew Valley; Rachel makes a compelling case for the enduring appeal of Disco Elysium; and Rebecca uses science (after a fashion) to conclude that Hades really needs to be there too. And, not least of all because 10 vaulted games is a nice round number to start off with, we also put Dredge on a special shelf of its own to indicate that it was our very first Indieventure Game of the Year in 2023. Hyperfixations this week see Rachel still obsessed with The Traitors: Series 2, Rebecca still obsessed with Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, and Liam reading Masters of Doom by David Kushner like a proper adult.

This week we finally talk about the Paradise Killer OST. Far and away one of the best soundtracks of the last few years for one of my favourite games of the last few years. Reese recently played it so as soon as she told me she was playing I said we had to do an episode as soon as possible so here it is! Apologies for the audio errors in the first two segments, the discord call was giving us some issues, we got it sorted in the end thankfully. 00:00:00 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Paradise (Stay Forever) 00:04:30 Talk 01 00:16:31 Barry "Epoch" Topping - GO!GO!STYLE 00:19:58 Barry "Epoch" Topping - The Lemegeton Bop 00:22:27 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Knife & Crystal 00:25:10 Barry "Epoch" Topping - House of Bliss 00:28:42 Talk 02 00:41:26 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Midori Eyes 00:45:08 Barry "Epoch" Topping - 8th Street Rose 00:48:28 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Breeze With U 00:53:31 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Headlights On The Shore 00:57:38 Talk 03 01:05:38 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Sunset Song 01:08:52 Barry "Epoch" Topping - The Sarcophagus 01:13:15 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Temple of Tears 01:17:28 Talk 04 01:31:58 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Unlimited∞Luv 01:36:23 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Misunderstand 01:40:08 Barry "Epoch" Topping - To The Heart [Vocal Version] 01:44:15 Barry "Epoch" Topping - About That... 01:48:53 Talk 05 02:00:05 Barry "Epoch" Topping - Lady Blue [MEEBEE & Okumura. Whoooo we're officially in the double-digits gang! We've somehow managed to make it to episode 10 of Indiescovery without going completely feral and wrecking the joint. I say that, but this week's episode is a little, shall we say, unhinged? Rebecca, Liam, and Rachel hadn't really had a proper chat all week so there's a lot of Friday energy and catching up, and the energy levels only increase when we start to talk about our main topic of this episode: Eurovision! And indie games, of course. Yes, it's a Eurovision-themed episode, and more specifically, which indie game characters we think would make the best Eurovision entries. We're looking for kooky, campy, gimmicky, vibrant, and super queer showstoppers. Oh and a good song would also help, too. But first, we kick off the pod with a chat about Disney World, as Rachel has just come back from a very fun but very tiring 10-day trip to Disney World Orlando. Then there's some very cursed Goofy chat, which we'll leave for you to listen to without spoilers. So which indie game characters do we think would make great Eurovision entries? Rebecca's first up with Monster Prom's Liam de Lioncourt, a hipster vampire with a love for eccentric music. Chuck a keytar in his hands and we think this topknot, suspender-wearing weirdo would go down a treat. Rachel and Rebecca then both agree on Junebug's performance from Kentucky Route Zero, is a mesmerising ballad that would knock the party hat off anyone in the audience. Liam's choice is the Chowder Man from Hypnospace Outlaw, a synth-rock entry whose major sweaty dad vibes would win the hearts of Europe. We also chuck some others into the mix including Lady Love Dies from Paradise Killer with her absolute banger of a track ‘Paradise (Stay Forever)', the Hades cast giving a super bi-sexual rock song in the same vein as Måneskin, any of Red's songs from Transistor, a drag queen pop anthem from Undertale's Mettaton, and (Liam's exact words) a yassified Harry Du Bois from Disco Elysium, which would be immense. There's a quick chat about what a Eurovision game adaptation world look like, be it a party game, visual novel, something like Just Sing, or a new Danganronpa game where each act gets a brutal execution. We also get back onto Disney again and look up the internet's top 10 hottest Disney characters, so enjoy that! We end the pod with our current hyperfixations. Rachel's is Eurovision (surprise surprise) and she's going all in this year with scorecards, Reddit threads, Twitter discourse and more. Rebecca's first pick is the Murder, She Wrote series from PushingUpRoses, a YouTube series she gave a shout-out to last episode, and the very good Ace Attorney podcast Turnabout Breakdown by Jay Castello and Diego Nicolás Argüello. Liam's first is murder mystery Grave Expectations by RPS' very own Alice Bell (whooo!) and his second is sci-fi novel Frontier by Grace Curtis. Indiescovery is a podcast by Rock Paper Shotgun. We're one episode away from being in the double digits, folks! Whoop! But for now, let's dive into episode nine of Indiescovery. Kicking off the episode we actually have a special guest (and definitely not one of Liam's many personas), it's Father Dringus Godliman! The Father guides the Indiescovery gang to a totally real and not metaphysical confession booth where we can safely reveal our Steam sins. After a quick chat about how many games each of us has on our Steam accounts, and how many of them we've actually played, we get into our most-played indies. Rebecca is up first with Max Gentlemen: Sexy Business!, a fun NSFW dating sim with business sim elements, which also acted as the perfect springboard for a quick chat about NSFW indies in general. Rachel's top game is the farming timesink Stardew Valley which surprised absolutely no one, and Liam's is the action roguelike dopamine hitter Vampire Survivors. The next topic of our sinful purge are indie games we own with shocking low playtime. You know what we mean, those games that we all longingly look at in our Steam libraries and swear that one day we will return to them. Liam admits to the cutesy city builder Outlanders and vibrant dark fantasy FPS Amid Evil. Rebecca's games are the beasty RPG Disco Elysium (totally understandable, that one) and The Infectious Madness Of Doctor Dekker, a Lovecraftian FMV game. Rachel's picks were tear-jerker Ori and The Blind Forest and tough-as-nails survival platformer Rain World. And last, but not least, our most shocking confessions: shameful unplayed indie games that we really should play but have not - the greatest of all sins! We're surprised the whole booth didn't burst into flames of retribution. Liam's are story-rich RPG turned full-blown cult Undertale, cosy management sim Spiritfarer, and Disco Elysium - a game which you've really gotta be in the right mood to play. Undertale makes a second appearance in Rebecca's picks, alongside the adorable exploration game Haven Park, and her aforementioned match-made-in-heaven game Paradise Killer (which she WILL play one-day folks, promise). Rachel's pile of shame includes the gothic visual novel The House In Fata Morgana and the turn-based death march Darkest Dungeon. And thus, the purge is complete. After a fond farewell to Father Dringus Godliman, the squad chats about the games we've been playing recently. Rebecca's been rolling dice in the off-beat RPG Betrayal At Club Low (this month's RPS Game Club pick), Rachel's been reading folks' fortunes in The Cosmic Wheel Of Sisterhood, and Liam has been feeding beavers countless jars of pickled goods in gorgeous city-builder Against The Storm. It's hyperfixation time! Rebecca has been playing lots and lots and lots of Honkai: Star Rail, at first for work but now for fun, making her question if it's actually a hyperfixation or a hostage situation. Rachel lists way too many YouTubers who have the best video essays including Mike's Mic, Sarah Z, NakeyJakey, Jacob Geller, Jenny Nicholson, Super Eye Patch Wolf, and Quinton Reviews (she also missed out ContraPoints, Defunctland, and hbomberguy so here they are retroactively). Rebecca chimes in with the Murder She Wrote videos of PushingUpRoses and Liam suggests Lady Emily's video on the almost downfall of the band Gorillaz. Liam ends with another devastating book recommendation (one that was recommended to him by fellow RPS Treehouser Ed) called Stoner by John Williams. Liam is really out here trying to make us all cry with sobering, life-changing book choices, huh. Indiescovery is a podcast by Rock Paper Shotgun. It's episode five of Indiescovery and we'd like our listeners to get to know us a little better, so this week we've picked our ultimate favourite indie games and then had a big old natter about them. Talking about all our favourite games would take us into 3023, so we've kept it to two games per person, which actually wasn't as hard as we thought it would be. To kick off the episode, we introduce the ✨Indiescovery Vault✨ a magical place locked behind a huge, golden door. It's a wonderful place where only the most prestigious indie games may go as selected by the Indiescovery team. The six games we've chosen for this episode will have a coveted place in the vault, but more will be added as the podcast goes on. This is the first of many episodes where we chat about our favourite indie games, so the vault will be opened again in future episodes. The first of our picks is Paradise Killer. Liam chose this murder mystery about gods and demons set on a tropical island dripping in vaporwave aesthetics. Even though she's not played it, Paradise Killer is very much a Rebecca game (it's basically a match made in indie game heaven) so Liam and Rebecca will keep poking her until she plays it. The second game is Rebecca's pick, Monster Prom, a game that introduced her to both the indie gaming scene and visual novels. This one is an Indiescovery contender for a standalone episode, one were we all jump into multiplayer for a few rounds then talk about it. If that format is something you'd be interested in for future episodes then tell us by leaving a comment! A game that sits snuggly in its number one spot on the RPS top 100, Return Of The Obra Dinn sails gracefully into our picks, nominated by Rachel. Turns out the RPS treehouse really like mystery games, so this detective game about a lost ghost ship from the 1800s was destined to be in the vault at some point. Let's put it this way: any game that forces you to learn the difference between a gunner, purser, helmsman, and bosun (and we're not even mad about it) is worth playing. We've time travelled back in time with Liam's second pick, Hypnospace Outlaw. This is a game we've chatted about on the podcast before, but it bears repeating: Hypnospace Outlaw is awesome. Set during the wild heyday of the online world, this ‘90s internet simulator is a gem of a game, so into the pit it goes (Yes, we have a pit in our vault. It was requested by Liam. It's basically Liam's pit. Blame Liam.). Rebecca's next pick is Firewatch, and wow did she almost have Liam and Rachel in tears talking about it. The feels were out when we were chatting about this one, as we get into the game's brilliant characters, lovely visuals, and heart warming themes. We're not crying, you are. The last of our six games is Kentucky Route Zero, which was Rachel's pick. She really loves this game, and when choosing her two games for this episode she didn't hesitate in choosing KRZ. A magical realist adventure, this American road trip follows a group of drifters as they search for an ethereal highway that runs through an underground cave system beneath Kentucky. It's a little weird, but also perfect (in our humble opinion). The squad then quickly list off other indies that crossed our minds when choosing our six (some of which we'll definitely get into in future eps) and then we dive into our hyperfixations. Rachel's been watching hours and hours of the RPG show Dimension 20, Liam has been watching Brutalmoose's calming mall and microwave meal reviews, and Rebecca introduced us to mushroom ketchup, which sounds amazing?? Did you know that mushroom ketchup existed? Every day is a school day, apparently. Indiescovery is a podcast by Rock Paper Shotgun. Paradise Killer is a first person detective game that combines strong writing with a wacky world. At first glance it might appear to be very over the top and ridiculous and you would be right with that assumption. But even with its very anime style of story telling and visual art style there is a very deep detective style game here that could call out to games like Ace Attorney. However, it might also rub those people the wrong way with its traversal and convoluted clues. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/game-pass-or-pass/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/game-pass-or-pass/support

Full transparency: we're still just playing Elden Ring / experiencing video game burnout from playing too much Elden Ring, so we figured this week would be a great opportunity to catch up on other video game & pop culture moments that have been in the zeitgeist! Aside from an obligatory Elden Ring corner, topics the employee walkouts at Disney over the company's ongoing financial support of anti-LGBTQ politicians, the Hogwarts Legacy State of Play presentation, a few other video games we've been checking out (Tunic, Paradise Killer, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, Kirby and the Forgotten Land), The Video Game Accessibility Awards hosted by Alanah Pierce and Steven Spohn, and gaming fundraisers for Ukraine relief-efforts from the (now-ended) itch.io bundle and Epic Games. Then in the back-half of the show for "what else we're gay for this week" we get into a whole bunch of movies and TV we've been watching! Usually, games based on a popular media franchises let you embody the main characters from movies, TV shows, or books. This week, though, we'll rope in Brendan "The Crawl" Hesse for a look at five games that cast you as some new nobody who just gets to hang out with the heroes. Then we'll talk about Stranger Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, Tunic, Paradise Killer, ID@Xbox, somehow more Elden Ring, and the longest amounts of time you've invested in getting an achievement or trophy.
Judge Castle returns to decide whether 18 or so listeners must die as a result of dodgy secondhand eBay purchases. This episode is slightly too long, but hopefully you'll be amused. This week's music comes from Barry Topping, composer on the brilliant Paradise Killer — it's our brand new theme tune!
It's not over yet! Listen to Tim and Brandon mention honorables from last year that didn't make it on the Insert Credit Top 21 of 2021 list. Two weeks ago, during our best games of 2021 podcast, I made an offhand remark about Balan Wonderworld, a game in which you have an economy based on small creatures called tims, which you literally throw onto the gears of capitalism. I figured I'd expand on what I meant by that. Tims are little creatures that hatch from eggs, and live on the isle o' tims, which is your hub world. They have distinguishing markings like stripes or different cute ears and stuff like that, but functionally they all want to do the same two things: eat, and procreate. The other thing they can be compelled to do is work, which is what they spend most of their time doing. At the start of the game, the only real structure in the island is a Conan the Barbarian-like turnstyle that has the appearance of a gear. next to that is a long black signboard that flips and makes a big clacking sound as numbers go up. To make that number go up faster, you can pick up your tims and toss them into this turnstyle, which eventually makes them push it. So that's what I meant by throwing them onto the gears of capitalism. As your number goes up – and by the way it's not clear what this number represents, but let's say it's money – more structures unlock. The sole function of most of these structures is to enable more tims to do more work. There are little elevators that take them up into simple rube goldberg machines, which drop them through a series of gates and slides, before depositing them back on the ground to start the process over again. Some tims are never released into the world, they simply exist underground, turning a giant wheel. The floor is transparent so that you can watch them work. All of this is work simply for the sake of work, because the only thing that is created out of this constant grind is a number that goes up, and then an occasional structural addition that theoretically enables more work to be done. But the apparatus itself is inefficiently designed. Tims get regularly jammed up at elevators. Two of them will try to enter a slide at the same time and be stuck for a while, causing a massive traffic jam behind them. There are regularly a dozen tims, piled on top of each other, stacked two or three high, bouncing up and down on an elevator to try to get to work, but unable to do so. Of course, after a while there is more than one elevator. There are two, and then three. But the tims never take the second or third route – the first is easiest to slide into, so almost every tim takes that path. The number doesn't seem to go up much faster when tims take the other two paths either, so why should they bother? I also mentioned that tims want to eat, but I didn't tell you that what you feed them is gems. You feed them one kind of money in order to make a different kind of money. Gems are something I can collect for free in game stages, and which Balan themselves will double if I complete their minigame. Once you feed the tims enough to grow large, there are unique kinds of apparatus these rich tims can use to generate money, but they never want to do it. They're full now and they don't want to work. They just want to procreate, which happens when you throw a medium-sized tim at a large one. They instantly create an egg, which hatches a tim that's too small to work. Feed them a few gems and they will become a worker and join the grind. The structure you're building is the somewhat ominously-named Clock of Happiness. The name of this structure, whose purpose is never revealed by the way, keeps coming to mind as I see these little guys toiling away to make my numbers go up. There's a special platform that I can use to view the operation from all angles. It allows me to keep tabs on all my workers and is accessibly only by me. Even with all that I still don't exactly understand what it is I'm forcing them to work so hard to construct. But I have found myself, as the defacto boss of this operation, staring at the jammed up elevators, looking at my non-spinning turnstyle, surrounded by tims peeping at me for gems that I don't have, and thinking “get back to work!” I toss them into the gears and they start it up again. This game may not be an intentional allegory to capitalism but it's an effective one anyway. This system definitely came from somewhere deep inside of somebody. The game is cynical about work, bosses, and the worker, all by turns. It's no wonder Yuji Naka quit after making it. Discuss this episode in the forums!
